COLLEGE CONSENSUS PUBLISHES RANKING OF THE BEST COLLEGE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS FOR 2019 Northwestern University and the University of Chicago have been identified as being two of the 50 Most Supportive Alumni Networks for 2019 according to College Consensus, a college ratings website that aggregates publisher rankings and student reviews.

“Very few students really take the alumni association into account when they’re researching where they want to go to college,” the editors of College Consensus note. However, “alumni are key to conquering the job market,” they add.

ILLINOIS OFFICIALS CAUTION RESIDENTS TO BE AWARE OF BLUE-GREEN ALGAE As temperatures begin to rise, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Public Health are reminding residents to be cautious if they are planning activities on Illinois lakes and rivers, now and throughout the summer.

Water conditions are ideal for blue-green algae growth. Blue-green algae (also known as cyanobacteria) are microscopic organisms that naturally occur in lakes and streams. Rapid growth of algae is referred to as a “bloom.” While most blue-green algae are harmless, some can produce toxic chemicals that cause sickness or other health effects in people and pets, depending on the amount and type of exposure.

BIPARTISAN BILL TO ADDRESS PREDATORY PHONE RATES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Rob Portman (R-OH), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Ed Markey (D-MA) and Angus King (I-ME) recently introduced the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act to strengthen the nation’s criminal justice system. This bipartisan bill would help families keep in touch with their incarcerated family members, which studies have shown can help reduce recidivism rates and thereby save taxpayer dollars.

This targeted legislation would address long-standing concerns about the prohibitively expensive and predatory price of phone calls that incarcerated individuals at correctional facilities across the U.S. are forced to pay if they want to contact their family or friends. The bipartisan legislation would affirm the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) authority to address a market failure to protect family, clergy and counsel who communicate with prisoners, inmates and detainees. The legislation also makes clear that the obligations of fairness in inmate communications apply to all individuals, including those living with a disability.

A group of 200 volunteers from Wells Fargo and Kidz Express, a nonprofit organization that focuses on west side youth, recently joined KaBOOM! in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood to build a new play area in a once empty lot located on 5226 W. Harrison St. right next to the Kidz Express Boys and Girls Club.

Kidz Express is a nonprofit organization that operates the Kidz Express Boys and Girls Club community center, at 5221 S. Congress Pkwy, in partnership with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago to provide west side youth with a safe space to receive mentorship and participate in impactful programming.

“Kidz Express actually sought us out and partnering with them fit into our strategic plan because we really wanted a strong presence in Austin,” said Mimi LeClair, chief executive officer of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. “The reason why we sought out Austin specifically is because of the alarming statistics that go along with that community. There is a high poverty rate and unemployment rate, it’s a food desert, and they have underperforming schools and children and families who suffer from trauma.”

Prior to the new playground being constructed, the Kidz Express Boys and Girls Club had an empty lot on their campus where an old swing set once stood and when the opportunity came to partner with KaBOOM! they knew a safe outdoor play area would be a valuable asset to the community.

children receive the balanced and active play they need to thrive, according to the KaBOOM! website.

KaBOOM! also works to solicit corporate sponsors to fund playground equipment in underserved communities and for this project specifically, they enlisted the financial support of Wells Fargo bank who has already been investing in the Austin community for quite some time, according to a press release from Wells Fargo regarding the playground construction.

Clubs of Chicago went straight to the young people in Austin who participate in the programs they provide and asked them what they would want to see in their new outdoor play space.

“We have a vision that the Kidz Express Club will become just really like the Taj Mahal of Boys and Girls Clubs in the city,” said LeClair.

“We asked the kids what they would like to see on a playground and then the KaBOOM! people got to work and made sure they made as many accommodations as they could. It was really fun for the young people to have a voice and we do try to give them a voice in as many of those types of decisions as possible.”

AGs Request Information Related to Breach That Compromised Millions of Patients’ Personal Information Attorney General Kwame Raoul and Connecticut Attorney General William Tong recently announced an investigation into the data breach at American Medical Collection Agency, which may have exposed the personal information of nearly 12 million patients of Quest Diagnostics (Quest) and 7.7 million Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp) patients.

Raoul and Tong issued letters recently to American Medical Collection Agency, Quest, and LabCorp requesting additional information about the recently reported data breach that compromised the health and financial data of potentially millions of patients. The breach was reportedly the result of malicious activity on the payment page of American Medical Collection Agency’s website. The company is a third-party

collection vendor for the two medical testing companies.

“The last thing patients should have to worry about is whether their personal information has been compromised by the entities responsible for protecting it,” Raoul said. “I am committed to ensuring that impacted patients receive timely notification and that the companies involved take precautions to protect consumers’ sensitive health and financial information in the future.”

“Sensitive personal information of millions of patients may have been compromised, and I am deeply concerned about the adequacy of the plans in place to notify and protect all affected individuals. It is important to determine the cause of this serious data breach and what steps these companies are taking to ensure this does not happen again,” Tong said.

In the letters, Raoul and Tong are requesting each company provide the total number of residents in Illinois, Connecticut and nationwide affected by the breach; a breakdown of the categories of personal information compromised; and information describing how the companies intend to inform and protect impacted residents. Raoul and Tong are also seeking the facts and circumstances surrounding the breach, measures the companies had in place to protect patient data privacy, and plans to prevent a future breach.

Patients who may have been impacted by the breach should receive notification from one of the companies involved, as well as information detailing additional steps they should take.

Raoul encourages patients concerned that their personal

information has been compromised to consider requesting a free security freeze from the three credit reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion – in writing, over the phone or online. A security freeze can help prevent identity theft because most businesses will not open credit accounts without first checking a consumer’s credit history. Once a consumer freezes their credit files, even someone who has the consumer’s name and Social Security number will likely not be able to obtain credit in the consumer’s name.

Credit bureaus cannot charge fees to place, lift, or temporarily lift a credit freeze. Additionally, Raoul recommends consumers monitor their credit regularly by requesting one free credit report annually from each of the credit reporting agencies.

Black Bodies Creating White Power

Richard T. Crane Class of 1969 Pays Tribute to New Graduates In a show of support for the graduating class of Richard T. Crane Medical Prep High School and of pride in their alma mater, Chaz Ebert, president of Ebert Digital and the film criticism site RogerEbert. com, and Verdine White, famed guitarist of R&B supergroup Earth, Wind & Fire, joined their classmates from the Class of 1969 in a special tribute during commencement recently at Symphony Center Orchestra Hall, 220 S. Michigan Ave. The celebration culminated a 50th high school reunion weekend of activities. Beginning at 10 a.m., 25 members of the Class of ‘69, dressed in all white and wore gold sashes, and led the procession of the Class of 2019 into the auditorium.

Ebert and White will provided words of encouragement to the students as they prepared to receive their diplomas. The class was the third to graduate from Crane since it was reimagined as a medical preparatory school in partnership with Rush University Medical Center.

Formerly focused on technical careers, Crane benefits from a robust roster of alumni who have gone on to enjoy highly successful careers and remained

active with the school, including scholarship support.

The campus is divided into four houses named for its distinguished alums, including the Ebert House. The school has a 100 percent college acceptance rate, and the Class of 2019 has been awarded more than $13 million in scholarships.

“We want to encourage excellence and encourage them to continue with their education,” said Ebert, who went on to pursue a law degree. “Those students are really on the ball.

We want to let them know that despite the negative things they hear and read about Chicago in the national media, there are so many positive things that come out of this city, including them.

So many people have gone on

to achieve and make a profound impact in their fields.”

Ebert and White have maintained a close friendship. Ebert recalls going to the Museum of Science and Industry with White and his brothers before their scheduled music sessions with jazz great Ramsey Lewis.

“Chicago is a great city for music and culture,” said White, who returns July 27 for a show at the Chicago Theatre. “We’ve earned the right to be Chicago proud.”

The Class of 1969 reunion committee is a close-knit group that believes in giving back.

For their 40th reunion, the committee gave scholarships to college-bound seniors with limited access to scholarship opportunities, and treated the graduates to personal computers and their families to a trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois.

“A reunion without good deeds is just not as interesting to me,” said Ebert. “Like the song by Earth, Wind & Fire says, each one of the members of the Class of 2019 is a shining star in my eyes.”

Almost every high school student in America knows about the compromise reached during the drafting of the U.S. Constitution resulting in enslaved people being counted as three-fifths of a person during the national census held every 10 years.

Even while white Southerners denied enslaved people in those states the rights guaranteed to citizens, they still demanded that the enslaved people’s bodies be counted in the census. The Southerners made this demand because the size of a state’s population determined how many representatives those states would be granted in Congress. The more representatives a state had, the greater the state’s power in the federal government.

The Northern states, seeing this ploy for what it was, resisted Southerners’ demand but, eventually, a compromise was reached where each enslaved body would be counted only as three-fifths of a person.

This is just another example of how white supremacists benefited from the use of black bodies while not providing one drop of benefit to the souls inhabiting those bodies. It also helps us to understand how black bodies currently are being used to enhance white supremacy in America.

Today, significant numbers of prisons – where brown and black inmates from urban areas are incarcerated – are located in rural, predominantly white census tracts. And for years, these brown and black bodies have been used to inflate the census figures in order to enhance the political power of those rural white areas.

The practice of counting prisoners in the census tracts where they are incarcerated decreases the political power of the home communities of those prisoners and transfers that power to an alien community with diametrically opposed interests. This is what happens when an individual is removed from his urban home in a liberal Democratic district and incarcerated in a district that voted for a white supremacist like Donald Trump. The body of that inmate, who by incarceration is ineligible to vote, has now increased the population count in the conservative district while the count of his liberal home district has been reduced.

The body of the inmate of color, like the body of his or her enslaved ancestor, has been stolen in order to enhance the political power of his or her oppressor.

There are approximately 2.3 million Americans in prisons and jails today. It also has been reported that between 1970 and 2000, more than 1,100 prisons were built in the United States, with roughly 70 percent of those prisons being located in rural communities, mostly in conservative Southern states such as Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas.

that voted for Donald Trump had a 53 percent higher jail admissions rate than those that voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

The national NAACP has reported that while African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately 32 percent of the U.S. population, they made up 56 percent of all incarcerated people in 2015.

A slide rule is not necessary to figure out that when you have large numbers of people victimized by the mass incarceration policies of this country, and a significant number of those inmates are used to further empower white supremacists in rural areas, there is little incentive for conservative politicians to correct this injustice that has been dubbed “prison gerrymandering.”

In addition to stealing bodies to gain political power, these rural areas receive increased federal funding based on their inflated population figures. This takes money from inner cities where many of the inmates had lived and redeposits those funds into the rural, predominantly white areas where the prisons are located. This is a win-win for white supremacy and a significant handicap for urban areas victimized by a lack of services, overpolicing and courts that hand down harsh sentences.

The practice of prison gerrymandering is slowly attracting attention. Six states – Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, California, New York and Washington – have outlawed prison gerrymandering and others have started taking steps to reduce or eliminate it.

The year 2020 is coming. It is not only an election year, but a year when the next census will be taken. Battles will be fought over racial gerrymandering and voter suppression. Ending prison gerrymandering is a battle that also must be fought. If prison gerrymandering is taking place in your state, organize and act.

The year 2020 is coming and we must fight against all attempts to foster white supremacy, including prison gerrymandering.

According to the latest State of Creative Hiring data, 75% of advertising and marketing hiring decision makers anticipate expanding their teams in the second half of 2019, up from 60% six months ago. In addition, 62% of employers plan to increase the number of freelancers they use, a 6-point jump from the first half of the year.

Web and mobile development remains the top area for recruiting among survey respondents.

Advertising and marketing hiring managers also reported a strong need for professionals with expertise in user experience, web production, and user interface and interaction design.

Staffing Challenges and Strategies A majority of advertising and marketing hiring decision makers (86%) said it’s somewhat or very challenging to locate the creative talent they seek. And when it comes to recruiting professionals with digital expertise, the job is just as tough: 75% reported difficulty finding and retaining these individuals. This may be one reason 45% of employers cited being

understaffed in digital areas.

In order to make better hires, many creative managers are keen on partnering with their peers on the technology team. More than 9 in 10 survey respondents (92%) said it would be helpful to work with IT hiring decision makers when recruiting full-time professionals to support digital marketing initiatives, and 65% said they frequently do.

“Creative and technology professionals are collaborating more than ever on digital marketing projects,” Domeyer noted. “Hiring managers who work together to identify recruiting needs across departments are in the best position to build high-performing teams with complementary rather than redundant skills.”

In fact, the city’s rabid sports fans - and teams - are known for their facial hair prowess. This distinction, combined with Mitchell Trubisky’s quarterback beard pact last season, helped launch the city into the No.1 spot on this year’s rugged roster.

In addition to offering FREE mustache and beard trims, Wahl hosted Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky at the barbershop on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Trubisky took his turn in the barber chair, and engaged with fans in some fun facial hair activities.

“General beard buzz on social media dictates the results of our annual study — now in its sixth year; however, with facial hair so rooted in sports, it’s no surprise chatter about the Bears influenced the results this year,” said Steven Yde, division vice president for Wahl.

Newly published data in Pediatric Dermatology shows that daily use of a sodium hypochlorite wash (CLn® BodyWash) significantly improved all primary and secondary outcome measures and is well tolerated with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), supporting its usefulness as a practical maintenance product.

Superbowl Champion Kam Chancellor Expands Men’s Shoe Collection Superbowl Champion and recently retired Legion of Boom member Kam Chancellor, and wife Tiffany, recently launched the Chancellor Collection in Seattle’s Market Street Shoes.
