EIGHTH GRADERS FROM 61 SCHOOLS ACROSS CHICAGO LEARN FINANCE AND INVESTING SKILLS Nearly 1,000 eighth grade students from 61 Big Shoulders Fund schools gathered at the Goodman Theater in Chicago recently to celebrate another successful year of the Stock Market Program, which brings more than 150 Chicago business leaders into eighth grade classrooms at Big Shoulders Fund schools to teach the basic concepts of saving and investing, the stock market, and careers in the finance and business sectors.

At the end of the event the Stock Market Program winner was announced. The school whose portfolio grew the most and won the Stock Market Program Cup was St. Nicholas Cathedral School. Each school in the program receives up to $3,000 that students manage throughout the year, providing them with an invaluable first-hand lesson in the challenges and responsibilities associated with managing and growing real money.

The Stock Market Program was developed by Big Shoulders Fund Executive Committee Members Charlie Bobrinskoy and Jim Hoeg, who sought to share their passion for the markets with the next generation and hopefully inspire another group of traders.

3D PRINTING BEING USED TO TRAIN YOUNG SURGEONS A group of Canadian plastic surgeons have used 3D printing to create a realistic hand model to help young surgeons learn valuable surgical skills. In the past, this meant practicing on actual patients. However, as technology has improved, so have opportunities for young surgeons to learn in a safe, controlled environment. This improves surgeon training, as well as patient outcomes.

“Surgery is a highly technical profession which requires years to master,” says Dr. Michal Brichacek, a plastic surgeon and a lead author of the study. “Young surgeons often learn in a graduated training model, where they are given more responsibilities as their skills progress. Although under the careful eye of their teachers, these young surgeons must begin to develop their skills somewhere.”

As the school year comes to an end, Mikva Challenge recently partnered with the Chicago Public Schools’ Department of Social Science and Civic Engagement to host the 17th Annual Action Civics Showcase where three hundred teenagers from 60 public schools came together to present their ideas on how to solve problems in their neighborhoods.

Mikva Challenge is a nonprofit organization that works with youth across Chicago to help them become informed and active community leaders. The organization operates in-school programs that allow students to engage with civic action projects.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate the youth voices that participate in the Mikva Challenge programs and to showcase civic action projects that were created as a result of the Issues to Action curriculum that Mikva Challenge provides for schools in the greater Chicago area.

“The young people are the ones driving

the action project. Everything you saw at the event and everything that was presented was put together by young people. Every school’s projects looked different because every school has different resources and every school has different starting points,” said Karla Castilla-Morin, Issues to Action program director for Mikva Challenge.

The Issues to Action program partners with teachers across Chicagoland and helps them to teach Action Civics to the students in their classroom. Over the course of the year, the students are asked to build projects that creatively address an issue they have identified in their school or their community and find ways to advocate for change.

The Action Civics Showcase is the yearly culminating event that allows students to share their projects with local leaders.

“My experience at Showcase made me feel like we are making a difference. In every school, there is a small group of students who actively use their voice. Today, all those groups are present in one case,” said an Action Civics Showcase student

participant.

The students were able to view each other’s project and give feedback on what they thought the best part of each project was.

“This experience made me feel a lot better about our group. Seeing that there are other groups going through the same things and facing the same conflicts,” said an Action Civics Showcase student participant.

As a former participant in the Issues to Action program, Castilla-Morin knows the value of allowing young people to participate in conversations about their communities and even more so providing them with the tools to solve the problems they see.

“This is kind of a way for students to start figuring out what they care about in their community and especially for students at CPS. I feel like this is one of the first few times when they’re asked what they think should be done in their community,” said Castilla-Morin.

New Research Shows Millennials Are Less Insured, Less Satisfied, and Visit the Doctor Less As Millennials overtake the Baby Boomers as the largest generation according to the U.S. Census Bureau, national nonprofit Transamerica Center for Health Studies® (TCHS) recently released new research showing how Millennials are shaking up traditional healthcare.

The new report titled Millennials: Digital Natives Disrupting Healthcare Trends, analyzes a representative sample of 1,172 Millennials from its 6th Annual TCHS Consumer Healthcare Survey conducted in 2018. The analysis focuses on Millennials’ access to health insurance, how they use and make decisions regarding healthcare, and general trends in their health and wellness.

The analysis also provides comparisons with Generation X (Gen X) and Baby Boomers (Boomers).

Millennials (16 percent) are more likely to be uninsured compared with the older generations (12 percent of Gen X and 8 percent of Boomers), an increasing trend since 2016. When asked why they lack insurance, 60 percent of uninsured Millennials say it is too expensive.

More than the older generations, uninsured Millennials say that they do not have time to acquire coverage.

One in five Millennials (21 percent) are not satisfied with the quality of the healthcare system they have access to—a dissatisfaction that has increased each year since 2016. This dissatisfaction, coupled with limited finances, may contribute to their reporting less frequent visits to their doctor’s office in the past 12 months

They are also more likely than older generations to use online sources to gather information about their health, health insurance, and healthcare providers.

“Millennials use online resources more often than seeking expertise from physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals,” says Hector De La Torre, executive director of TCHS. “An overdependence on the internet can be harmful - both in

misinformation and misinterpreted information. Every patient is different, so Millennials should not rely solely on generic outside information.”

Healthcare policy is another issue that attracts more Millennial attention than that of older generations. More than half are concerned (57 percent “extremely” or “very” concerned) about the healthcare policy changes in Washington D.C. Their biggest fear among potential

Right-wing disrupters

Recently, I saw two separate stories about right-wing disrupters. In one case, a well-known bookstore in the Washington, DC area, “Politics & Prose,” was visited by right-wing disrupters during a book event focused on “whiteness.” In another case, a discussion of race and politics in the Dominican Republic was disrupted by alleged Dominican fascists who are allies of the grandson of the notorious Dominican dictator, Rafael Trujillo.

Liberal and progressive individuals and institutions should expect disruptions to not only continue but to increase in scale. Given the signals that the Trump administration has conveyed to the political Right—as in suggesting that it is appropriate to beat up opponents—the rabid Right feels empowered.

So, what does one do? Here are a few suggestions.

Millennials do not shy away from mental health and alternative care options. In the past twelve months, Millennials are more likely to have one or more mental health visits compared with older generations.

Millennials report chiropractic visits or massage therapy (19 percent) and acupuncture visits (13 percent).

nials are adapting how they access healthcare and are open to different healthcare options, while remaining wary of losing their health coverage,” says De La Torre. “With one in five saying they cannot afford routine healthcare expenses, Millennials are seeking stability in the form of employer-based health coverage.”

Employers also appear to be helping their millennial employees by providing health and wellness programs, and Millennials are more receptive to such efforts than older employees are.

Despite their concerns, Millennials report the highest levels of health and wellness compared with older generations. Millennials have a positive view of their own health, with 80 percent rating their health as excellent or good. More than half of Millennials (55 percent) say their current, most important health-related priority is “staying healthy and covering basic preventive healthcare expenses.”

As Millennials grow older and increase their economic power and impact on American society, they will continue to disrupt healthcare.

Given the sheer size of their generation, Millennials will demand that the healthcare industry understand and address their distinct needs. By doing so, Millennials will also have an effect on how healthcare services are delivered to all generations.

First, we should take personal and institutional security seriously. Disruption can be carried out through right-wingers simply chanting or it can take the extreme form of violent attacks, e.g., the bombings of mosques and synagogues; the assassination of progressives. This means ensuring that our institutions are protected and that there are security teams prepared to intervene when there is a threat of physical violence.

Second, be careful about provocations. The history of the COINTELPRO operation that disrupted progressive and radical groups in the 1960s and 1970s, demonstrates that agents and other disrupters can either carry out a provocation to encourage progressives to break the law, and/or they can infiltrate our organizations and institutions and covertly encourage us to carry out illegal activities. Many great activists found themselves incarcerated or killed as a result.

Third, establish clear rules for behavior at all

events and meetings, and ensure that such rules are posted and/or circulated. It is not uncommon to have a provocateur(s) stand in a forum and speak beyond their time limit or to engage in forms of personal harassment. Under those circumstances it always needs to be made clear to the audience who is in the right and who is in the wrong before any actions are taken.

More than twenty years ago I saw an excellent example of the handling of a disrupter. Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, the iconic Irish leftist and nationalist, was delivering a presentation on the situation in Northern Ireland to an audience of hundreds. Well-known for her outspoken support of socialism, a united Ireland, and rights for the Catholic (nationalist) community in Northern Ireland, McAliskey was the subject of assassination attempts and various forms of harassment.

An opponent, who was obviously a supporter of Britain and the Protestant (Loyalist) commu-

nity, surfaced in the audience during the question and answer. He started asking very provocative questions and clearly aimed to disrupt the event.

Rather than evict the provocateur, McAliskey asked the provocateur questions and let him talk.

Within a few minutes the provocateur demonstrated that he was an idiot and vanished.

We are not entering a new era. These sorts of disruptions have a long and ignominious history in the USA. Many people have forgotten this and act as if so-called civility is the normal state of affairs. The right-wing has little interest in civility but a great deal of interest in suppressing progressive thought.

SBA Announces Makerspace Training, Collaboration and Hiring (MaTCH) Pilot Competition The U.S. Small Business Administration Acting Administrator Chris Pilkerton recently announced the launch of the Makerspace Training, Collaboration and Hiring (MaTCH) Pilot Competition.

The MaTCH Pilot Competition seeks to address the job skills and placement gaps faced by U.S. businesses by providing funding to create or expand programs with job-specific and soft skills training within existing makerspaces.

The SBA believes that existing makerspaces are uniquely positioned to help increase workforce development in U.S. cities of our nation’s workforce.

Tarver Sponsors Initiative to Provide Justice for Victims of Child Abuse As reports of child deaths at the hands of their parents continue to flood the news in Illinois, state Rep. Curtis Tarver, D-Chicago, is taking steps to ensure that people who intentionally deprive and endanger their children are brought to justice.

“It absolutely breaks my heart to hear stories about parents creating life-threatening environments for their children by maliciously denying them food, safety and medical care – especially when that family has been in contact with DCFS and law enforcement for abusing their child in the past,” Tarver said. “This is happening right now, in all corners of our state, but in far too many cases it’s impossible to bring these parents to justice until it’s too late to save that innocent child.”

Senate Bill 414 was introduced to close the gap in prosecution between unintentional child endangerment, a Class A Misdemeanor for the first offense, and instances of child endangerment

CURTIS TARVER that ultimately lead to the death of a child, which results in a Class Three Felony. This legislation is a response to the death of a six year old Illinois child who was repeatedly starved by his parents as a form of punishment. Although the boy weighed 17 pounds at the time of his death, a third of the typical weight for a child his age, the parents would only have received a Class A Misdemeanor if he had survived. Under this measure, intentionally endangering the life or health of a child would become a Class Four Felony on par with the aggravated battery of a child.

“It’s outrageous that the parent

of a child who survives starvation or the willful denial of medical care, which is just as harmful as violent physical abuse, receives the same treatment under the law as a single parent caught leaving their child home to make it to their shift at work,” Tarver said.

70% of American Singles Are Looking for a Serious Relationship Today, for the first time ever, eharmony is looking at what singles want out of their dating lives — and what they value most in potential partners. The first-ever “Singles & Desirability” study commissioned by eharmony revealed that indeed, both men and women want a partner who is kind, funny and honest. Nearly half of all singles said that honesty is the most important attribute when considering someone to date. They ranked kindness (44%) and a sense of humor (34%) as the second and third most desirable traits, respectively.

Most surprisingly — despite what we’ve heard about the dreaded hookup culture dominating the single life — both genders, by a very wide margin, (70%), indicated that people who are interested in finding a serious relationship are more desirable than those looking for a casual fling.

In fact, even though studies show that millennials tended to eschew marriage or wait longer to walk down the aisle, those who go into dating with the intention of finding someone to be with longterm tend to be more successful in doing so, the data suggests.

Older millennials (77%) and Gen Xers (75%) both showed a stronger preference for serious relationships, more than other age groups.

While 2018 brought positive social change for American millennial couples, these new insights illuminate the specific desires and needs both men and women have when it comes to dating, and how those desires have shifted over the years, especially for women.

Overall, singles of both genders found that honesty and kindness are the most attractive qualities in a potential partner, while men were two times more likely to desire “attractiveness.”

Caring Jobs Lead the Way The new survey results also identified some of the top professions men and women seek in potential partners: The four most desired professions in a partner (doctor/nurse, teacher/ professor, veterinarian, firefighter/ police) are all based around health/ wellness, education and public protection – suggesting that people with “caring” jobs are more desirable overall.

“What we’ve found over the years is that the singles on eharmony are kind, conscientious high-achievers who are looking for like-minded people,” says Grant Langston, chief executive officer at eharmony. “Our users tend to be committed to excellence in all aspects of life, and therefore tend to be most

desirable when it comes to how modern millennials view potential partners.”

Three top desirability myths were debunked as a result of the study: Desirability Myth No. 1: You must either look like a supermodel or run 20 miles a day.

Think you need to be America’s ‘Next Top Model’ to get a date with someone you actually connect with? Think again. Singles on the “Singles & Desirability” study ranked attractiveness as only the fourth most desirable trait behind honesty (54%), kindness (44%), sense of humor (34%), and intelligence (29%).

Millennials in particular are more likely to want more than a pretty face and to give a date a second chance if he or she displayed a sense of humor or wit. While physical attributes are still important for both men and women, people are understanding that physical chemistry alone isn’t enough to develop a strong, long-term relationship.

Teachers call for raising salary cap

‘Enough gun violence’: Rally supports passage of toughened FOID processes

SPRINGFIELD – The state’s largest teachers union on Wednesday called on Illinois lawmakers to lift a state-imposed cap on the size of pay raises they can receive, saying the current 3-percent cap is driving many teachers out of the state.

Standing in front of stacks of petitions containing more than 55,000 signatures, and surrounded by educators from several school districts and Illinois State University, Illinois Education Association President Kathi Griffin said raising the cap is needed, “to help save the teaching profession.”

“We all agree the threshold is hurting students, educators and the teaching profession,” Griffin said.

The 3-percent cap was imposed last year as a way to hold down the state’s share of the cost of funding teacher pensions. Per the law, if a school district that is part of the Teachers Retirement System, or a higher education institution that is part of the State Universities Retirement System, provides any educator with more than a 3-percent increase during the last 10 years of their careers, then that employer is responsible for paying all of the associated pension costs resulting from that raise.

Prior to that law taking effect, dating back to 2005, the cap had been 6 percent, officials said. And before 2005, it was 20 percent.

The cap was intended to prevent what some people have called pension “spiking.” That is,

giving someone a large pay increase in their final year, or final months of service to raise their “final average salary” which is used to calculate pension benefits.

But Kevin Gannon, president of the local teachers union in Geneva, said the cap limits the ability of veteran teachers to take on additional duties such as coaching, directing plays and musicals, or filling in for colleagues when they’re out sick and the district can’t find a qualified substitute.

“When it comes to coaching sports and other extras, the district is bringing in less-qualified people to fill those rolls rather than violate the 3-percent threshold,” Gannon said.

In April, the Illinois Senate passed Senate Bill 1952 which, among other things, would have raised the cap back to 6 percent, which is what Griffin said IEA is asking for. However, a House committee voted earlier this month to strip out that portion of the bill. It is now awaiting a final vote on the floor of the House.

Illinois has about $135 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, and the Teachers Retirement System accounts for about three-fourths of that liability. The state is operating under a plan to bring that up to a 90-percent funded ratio by 2044.

Officials at the news conference did not say how much additional money it would cost the state to take on the additional cost of funding the pension system with higher annual pay raises.

SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers and supporters of a bill that would strengthen the Firearm Owners Identification card system chanted “Fix the FOID” in front of the statue of Abraham Lincoln outside the Capitol on Wednesday.

Speakers like Milagros Burgos told their stories of loved ones who’ve died because of gun violence. Burgos’ husband, Rafael, stood next to his wife, holding a photo of their daughter, Alexandria.

Burgos’ voice cracked as she spoke to a group from a podium about her daughter. Alexandria was a college student who was killed by a stray bullet in 2014 in Chicago when she was 18.

Burgos said Alexandria had no idea what a gun looked like, or what it sounded like when fired.

“Enough guns, enough lives taken away from families, enough gun violence,” Burgos said. “... We cannot get loved ones back, but we can make a difference, together.”

Alicia Schemel with Moms Demand Action said legislation like Senate Bill 1966 would have prevented the death of her father, who was shot while on his way to pick her up from work.

“I know many of you have stories about tragedies that have hit your family and friends,” said Democratic Rep. Kathleen Willis, of Addison. “We’re going to make sure we have less and less of those stories.”

If passed, the bill sponsored by Willis would overhaul the state’s FOID system.

It would increase renewal and licensing fees from $10 to $50, require a-one-time fingerprint, better define clear and present danger, and prioritize those who fall within that definition for license revocation.

When pressed on her position of mandated fingerprinting during a House Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, Willis said she supports the measure if it means keeping people safe.

“We want to make sure we keep this state as safe as possible, allowing people who are lawful gun owners to own them in a safe manner,” Willis said during the rally.

Cindy McMullan, who attended the rally and is a member of Moms Demand Action, said she made the trip from Columbia, Illinois, because she wants to see sensible gun laws in the state.

She said she’s not opposed to lawful gun possession and the measures she supports – such as preventing domestic violence abusers or convicted felons from legally owning firearms – are also supported by gun owners.

The current system, she said, “obviously has weaknesses” that put her family at risk.

Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, the bill’s chief sponsor in the Senate, said SB1966 is a necessary change to policy and practices that will save lives. She also told the crowd to not accept “no” as an answer when requesting other lawmakers to support the bill.

“This is your state, this is our communities, and this is our problem we’re trying to fix together,” Morrison said. “You elected these people. They need to listen to you.”
