SURPRISES HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WITH $20,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Foot Locker Foundation, Inc. recently surprised high school senior Cade Pinalto of Chicago with a celebration and an oversized check in the amount of $20,000 as part of its annual Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program at Lane Tech High School.

From the classroom to his community, Cade is an inspiring example of overcoming obstacles to become the best that he can be. Having founded Sidelined USA, a non-profit that supports athletes who can no longer compete due to a career-ending injury or condition, he has built up his volunteer/mentor staff and actively sought out partnerships and sponsorships to further help other student athletes. He’s also a student basketball coach and a stadium announcer for the baseball team. Achieving academic success with a 4.7 GPA and working towards getting into one of the top ten business programs in the country, the Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Scholarship will help Cade as he pursues an education in business finance and looks forward to helping others achieve their goals.

To date, the Foundation has distributed nearly $3 million in college scholarships to 140 deserving high school seniors.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF ILLINOIS OPENS FIRST-EVER NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED CENTER Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has opened a new door to help build healthier communities. The Blue Door Neighborhood Center is the first-ever neighborhood-based center for BCBSIL. The center is aimed at improving community health by addressing common health challenges with wellness classes, connections to social services and customer engagement.

The center is open to everyone – BCBSIL members and non-members - and offers no-cost programming focused on whole-person health: physical, mental and social. STATE TREASURER FRERICHS’ I-CASH PROGRAM BREAKS RECORD, RETURNS $200 MILLION A record-breaking $200 million in forgotten cash and securities has been returned to its owners during the past 10 months, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said recently. It is the largest amount in the program’s 58-year history.

Such milestones typically are recorded in July to capture the state’s entire fiscal year, which is July 1- June 30. With two months remaining in the current fiscal year, that means the state treasurer’s office will shatter previous records set in fiscal years 2018, 2017 and 2016.

On May 18th, the I Am Abel Foundation will host it’s Fourth Annual Health And Medical Careers Conference at Rush University Medical Center in the Searle Conference Center, 1725 W. Harrison St., for aspiring physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals and their parents.

This is a free event where attendees will be able to learn about college curriculum and admission criteria, attend workshops on navigating careers in healthcare, and network with physicians and other medical professionals.

The I Am Abel Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides world-class mentoring and scholarly programs that focus on preparing underrepresented youth from Chicago for careers in medicine.

“Honestly, our mission is to raise our next generation of healthcare heroes. What we endeavor to do is raise young people or help train young people to understand the connection between medicine and society. One

of the things I always say is that medicine and society are inextricably tied and that there is no pill that can take away the pain of the voiceless,” said Dr. LaMenta “Sweetie” Conway, founder and president of I Am Abel Foundation.

Last year, over 350 people attended the Health And Medical Careers Conference and Dr. Conway said she expects even more this year because they have once again expanded their offerings and partnerships for this year’s event.

“We are really excited because we are partnering not only with Rush University, we are partnering with other local medical schools and many medical students from all seven of the medical schools in the Chicagoland area will be participating in this program,” said Conway.

Dr. Conway encourages students as young as middle school age to come to the event and bring their parents so they can learn together what will be expected of them as they pursue careers in the medical field.

“This year, we actually opened it up to middle school students and their parents so

that they can actually come and learn about early exposures to pre-health curriculums and basically professional tracks. The tracks that we’re offering this year, which is no different than last year, are pre-med as always because that’s my thing and that’s the focus of the program, pre-nursing, and also pre-pharmacy,” said Conway.

Aside from getting exposure to medical professions, attendees will also have the opportunity to meet with medical school admissions counselors, current students, and medical professionals who are in the midst of completing their medical residency programs. All these experiences will help participants gain a better understanding of what it takes to become a medical professional.

“I’m driven by this mission to create healthcare heroes,” said Conway. “It’s been proven statistically that physicians of color and minority physicians overall tend to return to the communities that they came from or communities like the ones that they came from and so my passion is to just help inspire these young people,” said Conway.

Substituting healthy plant proteins for red meat lowers risk for heart disease Diets that replaced red meat with healthy plant proteins led to decreases in risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a new study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Purdue University.

The study is the first meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials examining the health effects of red meat by substituting it for other specific types of foods.

The study was published in the journal Circulation.

“Previous findings from randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of red meat on cardiovascular disease risk factors have been inconsistent.

But our new study, which makes specific comparisons between diets high in red meat versus diets high in other types of foods, shows that substituting red meat with high-quality protein sources lead to more favorable changes in cardiovascular risk factors,” said Marta Guasch-Ferré, research scientist in the Department of Nutrition and lead author of the study.

The study included data from 36 randomized controlled trials involving 1,803 participants. The

The study found that when diets with red meat were compared with all other types of diets combined, there were no significant

differences in total cholesterol, lipoproteins, or blood pressure, although diets higher in red meat did lead to higher triglyceride concentrations than the comparison diets.

However, researchers found that diets higher in high-quality plant protein sources such as legumes, soy, and nuts resulted in lower levels of both total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol compared to diets with red meat.

The results are consistent with

long-term epidemiologic studies showing lower risks of heart attacks when nuts and other plant sources of protein are compared to red meat, the authors said.

The findings also suggest that the inconsistencies found in prior studies regarding the effects of red meat on cardiovascular risk factors may be due, in part, to the composition of the comparison diet. They recommended that future studies take specific comparisons into account.

Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot Meets With Leaders Of Chicago’s Black Print Media Outlets

As Mayor-Elect Lori Lightfoot prepares to be sworn in on May 20, she has been doing her due diligence by meeting with various Chicago leaders to hear their concerns and needs, answer their questions, and share her visions with them.

Most recently, Lightfoot called on a group of leaders from Chicago’s Black print media to participate in a round table discussion.

As the meeting began, Lightfoot welcomed both reporters and publishers from the Citizen Newspaper, the Chicago Defender, the Crusader, Bronzeville Life, Truth Be Told News, and The Final Call.

Right away, members of Chicago’s black print media began to discuss some of the city’s most pressing issues like equitable economic development, race relations, public safety, minority representation in city contracts and accessibility and transparency from the Mayor’s office.

Lightfoot said, with regards to making city projects more inclusive and focused on wealth building, the least Chicago can do is ask larger contractors to prove that they are committed to

partnering with minority groups, women, and veterans in their overall business plan and not just when the city requires them to.

She added, “We have to think about what can the city do to use its power through contracting and otherwise to help build wealth?”

“We are going to send the message and we are going to start speaking our values in a very profound way through our buying power in the market place,” said Lightfoot.

When talking about race relations in the city, there was a general consensus between Lightfoot

and the Black print media representatives that successful and prominent African Americans in Chicago must step up and speak out against the disinvestment, violence, and inequity that affects the south and west sides of the city.

When asked about what kind of a Mayor she plans to be, Lightfoot shared that she plans to be as present and accessible as possible and she’ll hold the mayor’s office accountable for the city services they are responsible for providing. She also said that she is working on a plan to have regular availability for media.

“My focus is not going to be on winning the day’s press cycle. My focus is going to be on government and making good on the mandate that we have received,” said Lightfoot. “I will be available to the press on a regular basis so that you won’t feel like I’m some rare migratory bird.”

Overall, the Black print media round table discussion was productive and Lightfoot stated that this will not be a one time occurrence and she will continue to meet with this group to make sure that they are able to work collaboratively with the Mayor’s office and bring important city news to their readers.

Kamedis Clinical Study Validates Traditional Chinese Botanical Efficacy in Eczema Treatment Kamedis™, a provider of advanced botanical solutions for chronic skin disorders, recently announced the results of a clinical study confirming that the traditional Chinese botanicals in its homeopathic over-the-counter Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream play a pivotal role in the product’s ability to reduce eczema rashes.

According to the study, the commercially available Kamedis cream was 44% more effective in treating atopic dermatitis than the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts. It was also 23% more effective than a competitive OTC brand widely used to provide eczema relief.

The double-blind, randomized, controlled study is the first in the U.S. designed to determine the efficacy of traditional Chinese botanicals in commercial dermatologic treatments.

“We know from more than a decade of R&D that our patented combinations of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs help restore damaged skin to health, but the validation in this study is a significant milestone for the company as well as for the millions of people who suffer from eczema,” said Roni Kramer, founder of Kamedis and lead director of its U.S. strategic business unit. “The results demonstrate that ingredients from nature still play a major role in our search for healing. When sourced, extracted and combined properly, they outperform known vehicles and moisturizers in the marketplace.”

The product: Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream utilizes a patented formulation of Chinese Rhubarb, Great Burnet, Tree of Heaven, Baikal Skullcap, Cnidium Fruit and Licorice extracts along with active and inactive ingredients used in conventional OTC products. Previous studies in published literature have shown that the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of these botanicals reduce eczema flareups by protecting the skin from further irritation, maintaining a moist skin environment, and facilitating relief of impaired skin barrier functions.

The method: The clinical trial involved 108 children and adults from ages 3 to 73 with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis who were randomly divided into three groups of equal size. One group used the Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream, one used the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts, and one used a leading third-party OTC product. All three groups used a Kamedis wash for the body and face, followed by one of the three randomized treatment creams for the affected areas on the face and body.

The results: After 28 days, patients treated with the complete, botanically rich Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream showed a 6.8% improvement in rash extent and severity as measured by the Body Surface Area (BSA) score, compared to just 4.7% for the Kamedis cream without the botanicals and 5.5% for the non-Kamedis product. That represents a 44% difference in BSA improvement between the complete Kamedis product and the Kamedis formula without botanicals, and a 23% difference between the complete product and the competitive OTC product.

In addition, clear improvement was visually evident after 28 days of using the Kamedis cream. No adverse events were reported.

“This is a ground-breaking study that documents the therapeutic benefits of traditional Chinese botanicals in pharmaceuticals for the first time,” said Kamedis Vice President Clinical, Regulation and QA Deganit BarakShinar. “This has significant implications for the rest of Kamedis’ product line, future product development

by Kamedis and others, and consumers seeking better solutions for various health conditions.”

Complete results are scheduled for publication in the June issue of Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.

The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums).

All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced

by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay. The album features additional collaborations with Larry Carlton, Sonny Landreth and Steve Morse.

Of the album, Frampton explains, “I have always loved to play the blues. When we formed Humble Pie, the first material we played together was just that. For the last two summers I had been playing a handful of blues numbers every night on stage with Steve Miller Band. I enjoyed this immensely and it gave me the idea of doing an ‘All Blues’ album live in the studio with my band. We started the resulting sessions 9 days after coming off the road last year. Over a two-week period, we recorded 23 tracks, all live in the studio. The energy of these tracks is completely different from building a track one instrument at a time. With this recording, we pay tribute to all the original artists who invented this incredible music. I hope you can hear and feel our enjoyment. I’m not sure if you can say we had fun playing the blues. But we definitely did.”

CALENDAR Annual Chicago Jazz Festival Features World-Renowned Artists The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recently announced the headliners and festival dates for the 41st Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, happening August 23 to September 1 at Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at other venues throughout the city. The free-admission festival will include a special tribute to Nat King Cole by his brother Freddy Cole and a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the festival’s programming partner.

“The Chicago Jazz Festival has become a celebrated staple of our city’s cultural life and a highlight of our summer season,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “This year’s celebration of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, along with a lineup of legendary innovators, homegrown icons and

new stars promises to thrill and inspire music lovers from Chicago and around the globe.”

Other performances at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion include: Cécile McLorin Salvant, Christian McBride, Eddie Palmieri, Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet, Ben Wendel Seasons, George Freeman and Billy Branch, Camila Meza, Latino-America Unidas with Miguel Zenon, Antonio Sanchez, Melissa Aldana and David Virelles, Joel Ross, Ryan Cohan’s Originations and the Dave Rempis Quartet.

“This is a great line-up of headliners, and our expanded ten-day festival will animate our city and neighborhoods with numerous free performance and place a spotlight on our great clubs and presenting institutions,” said Mark Kelly, DCASE Commissioner.

“Celebrating Chicago’s music legacy, we will honor Nat King Cole, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, and many of our great musicians as we welcome artists from across the globe.”

The Chicago Jazz Festival will also include free performances at neighborhood clubs and venues August 23 to 29, leading up to the concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center and in Millennium Park. The additional performances offer festival audiences even more opportunities to experience Chicago’s exceptional jazz sounds at some of the city’s legendary music venues.

The Chicago Jazz Festival showcases free live performances by important Chicago artists alongside some of the greatest names from around the world on multiple

stages. The festival is produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Local Eateries Announced For Taste of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recently announced the lineup of 82 eateries that will participate in the 39th Annual Taste of Chicago presented

by DoorDash – the world’s largest free-admission food festival – this July 10–14 in Grant Park.

Showcasing Chicago’s diverse culinary scene, this year’s list of 41 five-day participants, 24 pop-ups and 17 food trucks will offer Taste-goers an endless variety of more than 300 menu items to suit every palate.

“As the culinary capital of the world, the Taste of Chicago will give residents and visitors alike the opportunity to sample some of the greatest foods this city has to offer,” said Mayor Emanuel.

“Since its inception, the Taste of Chicago has become a summertime staple and this year’s lineup of worldrenowned restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups will be even more vibrant and diverse than ever before.”

This year Taste of Chicago is excited to welcome its new presenting sponsor DoorDash, the largest and fastest growing on-demand destination for door-to-door delivery in more than 4,000 cities in the United States and Canada. DoorDash connects Chicagoans with their favorite stores and restaurants, including many participating in this year’s Taste of Chicago festival.

Additionally, the festival received a 12% increase in the number of applications from food businesses located across the city and representing a wide variety of cuisines. Admission to the Taste of Chicago is FREE, and tickets for food and beverages can be purchased in strips of 14 tickets for $10. Whether craving the robust flavors found in ethnic cuisine, epicurean delights, sweet treats, classic Chicago dishes – and more – Chicagoans and visitors won’t want to miss this year’s Taste!

NEW! Taste of Chicago Community Dinners New this year, Taste of Chicago vendors may participate in the 2019 Taste of Chicago Community Eats Program, an opportunity to host a community organization or group for a free, community meal. The dinners will

all take place on Wednesday, June 26, at restaurants and venues across the city to create a positive social impact and extend the reach of Taste of Chicago. More information will be announced in June.

Lifeway Foods Taste Kitchen The Lifeway Foods Taste Kitchen dishes up a full menu of cooking demonstrations by local and national chefs including Chef Mary Nguyen of Saigon Sisters, Chef Martial Noguier of Bistronomic, Chef Michael Sheerin of Taureaux Tavern and Chef Giancarlo Valera of Tanta Chicago. Each day of the cooking demonstrations held on the Buckingham Fountain Plaza will feature a different culinary theme.

The full schedule of cooking demonstrations will be announced in June.

CH Vodka Cocktail Lounge, Goose Island Backyard Brewery and Stella Rosa Wine Garden The CH Vodka Cocktail Lounge, the city’s largest pop-up bar, will offer mixology specials to enjoy by Buckingham Fountain. The specialty cocktail menu during the Taste of Chicago will include two new refreshing drinks, the Chicago Mule (made with Jeppson’s Malort and CH Vodka) and the Peach-Mango Lime Rickey, as well as their much-loved Tropical Rum Punch and Bourbon Pineapple Smash. The popular Goose Island Backyard Brewery will offer Taste-goers a select list of craft beers and ciders that include Goose Island Born and Raised, Goose Island Next Coast IPA, Goose Island Natural Villain, Virtue Cider Mezzo Spritz, Golden Road Mango Cart, Elysian Spacedust IPA and many more. Concerts at the Petrillo Music Shell Taste of Chicago will also present a diverse mix of national and international artists at nightly concerts at the Petrillo Music Shell along with a daily schedule of local artists at the Goose Island Stage. In 2018, more than 1.5 million residents and visitors enjoyed Taste of Chicago, reflecting the vibrant diversity of the City of Chicago. Over 3,000 people were employed by Chicago restaurants and vendors, and more than 600 artists and performers were hired to entertain Taste-goers over the five-day festival. The event contributes an estimated $106 million annually in total business activity to the Chicago economy.
