MAYOR LIGHTFOOT ANNOUNCES $12.5 MILLION IN TRANSPORTATION COST RELIEF

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot announced Chicago Moves, a financial assistance program aimed at providing financial relief for Chicago residents struggling with transportation expenses, making Chicago the first and largest major city in the country to do so. Chicago Moves aims to help combat spiking costs of gas and rising inflation by providing $12.5 million in relief funding for disadvantaged Chicagoans. The program will be comprised of $7.5 million earmarked for $150 physical prepaid cards eligible for redemption at local Chicago gas stations as well as $5 million earmarked for $50 prepaid cards eligible for use on public transit.

Chicago Moves comes at a critical moment in recent history for Chicago and the nation. Over the past several months, domestic and international pressures have forced the cost of gas to record highs.

To make this program possible, the City has partnered with Fifth Third Bank and Onbe, a market-leading corporate disbursements fintech.

Up to 50,000 physical prepaid cards of $150 will be distributed to eligible residents via a lottery system. These cards will be valid for one year after receipt and may only be spent on the cost of fuel at gas stations located within Chicago. Applications are limited to one per household.

Beginning in May, cards will be distributed in five successive monthly waves of 10,000 residents.

To be eligible for these cards, applicants must: Be residents of Chicago Be at least 18 years old Have a current and valid City sticker with correct mailing information for their vehicle Have a household income at or below 140% of the Area Median Income for Chicago (available here) The City will also distribute or add value to 100,000 cards for use on public transit in the amount of $50 each. These cards will not only help ease the burden of record-high gas prices but will help advance clean transportation by offering weeks of free public transit access to thousands of commuting Chicagoans. Of these 100,000 transit cards, 75,000 will be distributed based on geographic data, prioritizing high CTA-utilizing residents in low-income neighborhoods. An additional 25,000 transit cards will be distributed citywide.

Bally’s Corporation engages community in casino bid Continued from page 1

Bally’s Corporation is one of three finalists in the running for a Chicago Casino license. Rivers 78 and Hard Rock are the other two finalists. The final three companies were announced in mid-March.

Hard Rock gave its presentation on Tuesday, April 5th, and Rivers 78 gave its presentation on Thursday, April 7th. The goal of the events were to present their bids to the community and answer any questions residents might have about everything from safety to traffic. The City of Chicago has been mulling over the idea of having a casino for 30 years.

“We have spent countless hours analyzing each proposal for Chicago’s casino license and have determined Bally’s Tribune, Hard Rock Chicago, and Rivers 78 best fit the core goals we want to achieve for the City’s first integrated casino-resort,” Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot said in a release. “Each proposal offers economic, employment, and equity-focused opportunities for Chicago, while simultaneously enhancing the City’s cultural, entertainment and architectural scenes with world-class amenities and design. Our teams look forward to heading into discussions with the finalists and getting one step closer to bringing this decades-long project to fruition.”

Samir Mayekar, the Deputy Mayor for Neighborhood & Economic Development, said having a casino in Chicago is vital to the city’s economic recovery.

Jenny Huang Bennett, Chief Financial Officer for the City of Chicago, said there is a loss of $400 million in revenue from Chicago

not having a casino.

“This project is expected to create new jobs,” Bennett said. “Each bidder has proposed a mixed-use development, as well as a transportation plan.”

Soo Kim, Chairman of Bally’s Corporation, acknowledged the long process of listening to and addressing concerns from the city and the community, along with meeting with more than 50 community organizations. He added that it is the company’s plan to exceed all of the guidelines set in place by the City of Chicago.

Bally’s Corporation is proposing an almost $2 billion entertainment, with gaming as the anchor. Bally’s would construct a temporary casino site that would open in the second quarter of 2023, with the permanent casino to open the first quarter of 2026, if approved.

Kim said the Bally’s casino project would create less density, less traffic, more public space and more access.

“Our site happens to have the best in terms of revenue potential.

Our site is also closest to the urban core,” said Kim. “Our casino has the highest potential to bring people into the city.”

Kim also talked up the non-gaming amenities that would be available to those who don’t want to gamble. Those amenities include restaurants and entertainment venue spaces.

Kim said the project will lift up the entire community and the most important element of economic impact is jobs. The project is the opportunity to bring jobs to the city and the community.

The next step in the process is a selection of a finalist, creation of a Host Community Agreement, evaluation of the Host Community Agreement, city council approval and Illinois Gaming Board approval.

Fighting the Corruption of Power

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - We keep learning more about the attack on the U.S. Capitol. And we keep learning more about the many schemes former President Donald Trump and his team tried to use to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

In some ways, it is discouraging. We know just how badly Trump’s inner circle was corrupted by his desire to keep power at all costs. We had lawyers writing memos about how to break the law and stop Congress from affirming Trump’s defeat. We had members of Congress repeating his lies about a stolen election and trying to take the decision away from the voters.

In other ways, it is encouraging that the truth continues to come out.

News stories that expose lies and corruption remind us of the importance of a free press. The investigation by the Jan. 6 select committee reminds us how much we need the checks and balances that are built into our system.

Those checks and balances—like the ability of Congress to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch—are necessary to prevent abuses of power and hold politicians accountable.

But for those protections to work, we must have public officials who are committed to upholding the rule of law. That’s not what we’re seeing from former Trump staffers and advisers. Just the opposite. They are stonewalling the congressional investigation and defying its subpoenas.

And with just a few exceptions, congressional Republicans are not acting honorably. Rather than embracing the search for truth, they try to discredit the investigation. Rather than face up to the anti-democratic rot in their party, they would like to sweep it all under the rug.

Let’s be clear. Trump and his lawbreaking friends are trying to keep Americans from learning the truth about the attack on Congress and the attempt to overthrow the will of the voters.

Specifically, Trump and his supporters are trying to run out the clock.

They are counting on their allies taking a majority in the House of Representatives in this year’s elections. And then they’ll shut the investigation down before the full truth can come out.

That would be disastrous for our democracy.

Consider just a few of the things we have learned recently.

When the White House handed over logs of Trump’s calls on the day of the insurrection, there was a seven-hour gap covering the crucial hours before, during, and after the attack on Congress. What violations of law are hiding in that gap?

We also learned that Ginni Thomas, a hard-right activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, was in regular contact with Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows in the days and weeks after the presidential election. She embraced even the most extreme and ridiculous far-right conspiracy theories about the election.

She even said she hoped it was true that members of the “Biden crime family,” reporters, and elected officials were being arrested and would be held on barges in Guantanamo Bay to face military trials for sedition. She urged Trump not to concede defeat.

It just so happens that Justice Clarence Thomas was the only Supreme Court justice who backed Trump’s attempt to keep White House records from being shared with the Jan. 6 committee. It was an 8-1 vote. That explains why so many people are now calling on Thomas to resign—or at the very least to recuse himself from any other cases about the insurrection that come before the Court.

We can’t make Clarence Thomas act honorably. But that doesn’t mean we are powerless to protect our democracy.

It was we the people who voted Trump out of power. Trump’s ability to pressure and bully election officials and legislators into joining his corrupt schemes was limited by the fact that he lost in multiple battleground states, not just one. His supporters’ ability to shield him from accountability will be determined in part by what happens in this year’s elections.

When Americans go to the polls this fall to elect members of Congress, we will not only be participating in democracy. We will be determining its future.

City Colleges of Chicago is currently offering the CNC Lathe and CNC Mill Operator CE Class, evenings,

SIMS, SENATE DEMOCRATS UNVEIL TAX RELIEF PLAN FOR ILLINOIS FAMILIES

Illinois State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) joined several other Senate Democratic Caucus members to unveil a $1.8 billion relief plan that suspends state taxes on groceries, gas, back-to-school shopping and delivers tax refund checks to taxpayers statewide.

“When budget negotiations began this spring, I vowed to move Illinois toward fiscal stability,” Sims said. “By working with other budget leaders and taking a responsible approach, I am proud to say that we’ve put Illinois on a path to fiscal success and are now able to return taxpayers’ their hard earned money.”

The plan, outlined Friday, seeks to address inflation and the rising prices at the pump. The plan will suspend the 1% state grocery tax and the state’s portion of the gas tax increase for six months. Parents will see additional relief with a suspension of the state sales tax on clothing, shoes and school supplies from Aug. 5 to Aug. 14 as they go back-to-school shopping.

The relief plan would directly deliver refund checks valued at $100 per person and $50 per child to state taxpayers making $250,000 individually or $200 for joint taxpayers up to $500,000 – sending money to 97% of taxpayers. A household of four would see a $300 check. Taxpayers could also see an additional $300 property tax relief check – a proposal mirrored after Governor JB Pritzker’s budget proposal.

“The pandemic recession has taken a major financial toll on families across the state,” Sims said. “Our plan allows taxpayers the relief they need to help them address the higher prices families are facing. With the Pay it Forward Plan, we’re going to drive down skyrocketing gas and grocery costs and give people some needed relief.”

The comprehensive proposal also includes expanded economic aid for lower-income workers and increased tax credits for teachers and volunteer first responders. Senator Sims is working with his colleagues to vote on the measure – Senate Bill 1150 – Prior to April 8th adjournment.

SENATOR JONES MEASURES TO CHANGE SPEEDING IN PARKS THE SAME FINE AS A SCHOOL ZONE To keep children safe from reckless drivers, State Senator Emil Jones III (D-Chicago) passed legislation to make speeding in park zones an equivalent punishment to speeding in school zones.

“Parents should have the peace of mind that when their student is at school or at the park playing or running around with friends that they’re safe from reckless drivers,” Jones said. “When children are outside, drivers must be cautious and careful behind the wheel.” House Bill 5328 would make speeding in a park zone the same as speeding in a school zone. Additionally, it clarifies that school zone speed limits apply to local, county and state roadways.

“Please drive safely and responsibly when you are driving around schools or parks,” Jones said. “Keeping our kids safe from reckless drivers is commonsense.”

House Bill 5328 passed the Senate and will move to the governor’s office for further action.

MARTWICK STANDS IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SAFETY PACKAGE THAT ADDRESSES LAW ENFORCEMENT NEEDS A legislative package intending to provide greater support for law enforcement agencies ranging from mental health support, to hiring and retaining officers and the purchase of body cameras was unveiled at a press conference Monday with strong support from State Senator Robert Martwick (D-Chicago).

“I am proud to join my colleagues in support of this legislative package to show that we are working to address the practical concerns of law enforcement agencies across the state,” Martwick said. “From clarifying when officers can use body cameras to getting more support for mental health issues in jails and helping local agencies recruit more highly qualified officers, Illinois is continuing to show up for our hardworking officers.”

House Bill 3863 creates the Law Enforcement Recruitment and Retention Fund to help law enforcement agencies hire and retain qualified law enforcement officers. House Bill 3893 would extend the Jan. 1, 2023 sunset date for allowing officers to use a device to record a conversation during an investigation.

House Bill 4364 would create the Mental Health and Substance Use Prevention Fund to allow the Department of Human Services to fund grants to offer mental health and substance use prevention to people who are incarcerated and individuals in county jails or people who have been recently discharged.

To address disparities in pay across the justice system, House Bill 4228 would require that County Sheriffs are paid 80% of the salary of a State’s Attorney.

House Bill 4608 would allow body camera grant funds to be used for data storage costs. It would also allow officers to flag video if they believe it may have evidentiary value. The measure also clarifies when an officer does not have to have a camera turned on, such as in training or only in the presence of other officers.

Martwick joined the Illinois Sheriff’s Association, the Fraternal Order of Police Labor Council, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and the Illinois State Police to express support for the package. He plans to work with his colleagues in the Senate to advance the package before the scheduled April 8 adjournment.

CDPH Warns Chicagoans Not to Serve or Eat Potentially Contaminated Raw Oysters from Canada

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is recommending that Chicagoans not eat raw oysters from a specific area in British Columbia, Canada, after they were linked to an outbreak of norovirus.

The FDA has also issued an advisory to restaurants and retailers not to serve or sell potentially contaminated raw oysters and has confirmed that potentially contaminated raw oysters were distributed to restaurants and retailers in 13 states, including Illinois .

Restaurants and retailers should not serve raw oysters harvested from the BC 14-8 or 14-15 regions within Baynes Sound, British Columbia, Canada. Oysters should be disposed of by throwing them in the garbage or returning to their distributor for destruction.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, and fever. Symptoms usually start 12 to 48 hours after eating contaminated food and resolve within 1 to 3 days.

Young children, older adults, and people with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of severe illness. For more information about Norovirus, go to the CDC website here.

To protect yourself and others from norovirus: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water often.

Carefully wash fruits and vegetables before preparing and eating them.

Cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly before eating them.

Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces with a bleach-based household cleaner.

Wash contaminated laundry thoroughly.

Clever Storage Ideas for Small Spaces
