The report highlights voices of key lawmakers, survivors, advocates, and researchers working to end the public health crisis of gun violence.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) released The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America. Congresswoman Robin Kelly pioneered this report as a one-of-a-kind Congressional analysis of the nation’s gun violence epidemic and a blueprint for ending the crisis.

The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America brings together Members of Congress, survivors, academics, and gun reform advocates to examine the root causes and impacts of gun violence in America and provides a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to stop it. Ten years ago, Rep. Kelly released the first version of this report after winning her seat in Congress on a platform of gun violence prevention. Rep. Kelly made headlines during her first full term for refusing to stand during moments of silence, demanding action instead of empty gestures. In the aftermath of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016, Rep. Kelly joined Congressman John Lewis to lead a 26 hour sit in on the House floor demanding action on gun violence. Rep. Kelly has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to combat the gun violence epidemic.

AMMONS ENCOURAGES LOCAL STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR ILLINOIS LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is encouraging African American high school seniors and undergraduate students to apply for one of this year’s Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) scholarships online by May 31.

“We’re approaching that time of year where students nationwide are finding out what college they’ve gained acceptance to for this upcoming fall semester,” said Ammons. “The Caucus is committed to supporting African American students in continuing their education by providing the financial relief necessary for many families to explore these opportunities. I highly recommend local students take the time to apply for this scholarship.”

The ILBCF anticipates over $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded this year to help African American high school seniors and undergraduate students continue their education at a two- or fouryear institution this fall. Since 2002, the ILBCF has given over $1.5 million in scholarships to students. “I just knew I wanted to provide a safe space, guidance and additional support to parents for our girls,” Robinson said.

Mentorship wasn’t something Robinson had when she was growing up, but she felt if she’d had it, it would have been beneficial to her. She did some research on what it would take to start a mentorship program and decided to start Pretty Me Inc. The organization’s mission is to elevate mental health, empower youth and educate families. There is a PMI Girls program for girls ages 12 years old and 16 years old and the Young Adults program for young women ages 17 years old to 22 years old.

The mental health program hosts in-person group meetings with mentees and mentors. The mentors stay with the mentees through the duration of their stay in the program. Robinson said the one-on-one mentoring is a big part of the program and it builds relationships. Currently, the program serves 40 girls.

Pretty Me Inc. will host its inaugural E3 (Elevation, Education, Empowerment) Conference from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27th, at Brooks Middle School, 350 Blair Lane, in Bolingbrook.

The free conference will include sessions on personal development, entrepreneurship, leadership, and empowerment, as well as self-love and communication. There also will be a step show, judged by members of the Divine Nine Black Greek Letter Organizations. Attendees can do a glam session and spa day. One student will receive the E3 Academic Scholarship, which will cover tuition, fees, and school supplies.

The goal of the conference is to remind girls they are strong and powerful, while also harnessing their skills and tools, as well as to celebrate the girls and the efforts

of their mothers.

In addition to the mentorship programs for girls and their mothers, Pretty Me Inc. has developed a mentorship program for fathers and has expanded its outreach in schools for an afterschool program. Robinson wants the fathers to also receive support through the PMI Dads Program.

On March 18th, Pretty Me Inc. started an afterschool program at Humphrey Middle School in Bolingbrook. The goal of the REACH program is to combat bullying, peer pressure, procrastination, while promoting mental health, wellness and friendships.

“We really want our girls to know they matter, we want them to utilize their voices so they can be good and whole within themselves, but also be leaders in their community and be confident in that. We are creating a pretty package where pretty starts on the inside and it radiates on the outside,” Robinson said. She wants the girls to be able to stand on their morals and their values.

Robinson said it is important to get the family involved in the program because the parents need support. She said the family is the foundation and she wants mothers to remember who they are and that they are also seen.

Robinson hopes the girls who attend the E3 Conference leave the event feeling heard, encouraged, and empowered, and she wants the mothers to leave feeling seen and that they can take on the world.

The CDA and its design and construction partners will engage with NREL to study and incorporate renewable power technologies into the airport’s new facilities in a cost-effective manner, including the new O’Hare Global Terminal and new satellite concourses planned through the O’Hare 21 Terminal Area Plan.

“Chicago’s airports have a long history of implementing industry-leading sustainable initiatives at O’Hare and Midway, dating back to 2003, when Chicago introduced the country’s first Sustainable Airport Manual, which has been used on more than 260 development projects at both airports,” said CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Headquartered in Colorado, the NREL is a federally funded research and development center created by the U.S. Department of Energy focused on advancing the science and engineering of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power technologies. The agreement with NREL will not exceed a three-year period, and the total cost of consultant services will not exceed $500,000.

In the intricate tapestry of caregiving, where love intertwines with sacrifice, disparities carve their presence into the fabric of each caregiver’s journey. It’s only in recent times that the spotlight of population-based studies has shifted to illuminate the stark racial contrasts within the realm of dementia caregiving, shedding light on the burdens and obstacles faced by Black and Hispanic caregivers.

Amidst these revelations lies a sobering truth: nearly half of Black and Hispanic individuals grappling with dementia seek refuge in the care of their adult children, a striking comparison to the one-quarter of White individuals who do the same.

Yet, the burdens endured are far from alleviated. Black caregivers, steadfast in their commitment, often find themselves bearing heavier loads. They dedicate upwards of 40 hours per week to caregiving, a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity. Their role extends beyond mere companionship; they become essential pillars, providing aid with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), assuming roles of nurturer, confidant, and protector.

However, alongside the emotional and physical strains of caregiving, a different burden persists - the weight of financial hardship. Particularly, Black male dementia caregivers find themselves disproportionately impacted, standing 3.3 times more likely to grapple with economic challenges than their counterparts.

Despite the undeniable necessity for respite, Black caregivers are noticeably less inclined to seek such reprieve, underscoring the enduring gap in accessibility to support services. The journey of caregiving, laden with emotional and physical tolls, exacts its toll on mental well-being, with discrimination looming as a dark cloud over the welfare of African American caregivers.

Yet, amidst the trials, glimmers of resilience and fortitude emerge. Black caregivers, more prone than their White counterparts, discover solace in the affirmative aspects of caregiving, fostering bonds that transcend the constraints of illness. Research even suggests they experience marginally higher levels of psychological wellbeing, a testament to the potency of love amidst adversity.

However, the path to caregiving is fraught with hazards. Hispanic, Black, and Asian American caregivers find themselves grappling with heightened care demands, diminished external support, and elevated rates of depression, underscoring the pressing need for culturally attuned support systems.

In the mosaic of caregiving, the ties that bind are often woven from the threads of familial and social support. For Black caregivers, the presence of robust support networks serves as a beacon of hope amid the darkest hours.

Yet, amidst the challenges, there exists a glimmer of hope. Through resilience, solidarity, and unwavering love, caregivers of every shade navigate the labyrinth of dementia, their narratives a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity in confronting adversity.

Giannoulias Kicks Off 2024 Summer Job Program

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias announced his office is now accepting applications for the second year of his administration’s summer job program.

More than 120 positions are available for college, trade school and graduate school students or graduating high school students who are enrolled in college or trade school in the fall. Job offerings include working at DMVs or at one of the various departments in the Secretary of State’s office.

“The goal of our summer jobs program is to provide a pathway for young people to explore career opportunities, build their skillsets, earn money and make connections through a real-world job experience,” Giannoulias said. “This type of hands-on work also helps with future academic and professional success and can translate into long-term benefits for our communities.”

Along with building job skills for students and learning about state government, the program bolsters the office’s customer service efforts during the busy summer months.

Available positions include work in Secretary of State offices in Chicago, surrounding suburbs, Springfield and downstate facility locations. Pay is $16 per hour for college and trade school students and $25 per hour for specific contractual intern positions for graduate school students.

NAACP and CBS Studios Venture to Develop New Daytime Drama for the CBS Television Network

(Black PR Wire) LOS ANGELES – The joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP is developing a new daytime drama for the CBS Television Network.

The series, titled THE GATES, follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. Michele Val Jean, who has written more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and won multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL and “General Hospital,” will serve as writer and showrunner. Val Jean will also be an executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner. New National Data Shows Strong STEM Aptitude

Among Black Students, But Reveals Limited Exposure to In-Demand Careers

AMERICAN FORK, Utah, PRNewswire -- YouScience®, the leading technology provider dedicated to solving the skills gap crisis for students and employers, and Black Girls Do STEM, a 501c3 nonprofit organization empowering Black girls to achieve equitable Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) representation, today announced the release of the 2024 Black Students and STEM Report. This new report reveals that Black students across the nation possess the aptitudes for in-demand STEM careers, but lack interest in pursuing them. This indicates that a significant career exposure gap exists, likely due to underrepresentation in STEM careers.

The career exposure gap is measured by the difference between a student’s aptitudes and interests, and identifies which careers a student hasn’t been exposed to and which ones might be a good fit. Most notably, the 2024 Black Students and STEM Report found:

A 75% exposure gap in Advanced Manufacturing

A 57% exposure gap in Health Science

A 56% exposure gap in Finance

A 53% exposure gap in Architecture & Construction

A 51% exposure gap in Computers & Technology

The 2024 Black Students and STEM Report combines data from YouScience and Black Girls Do STEM to highlight Black student career exposure gaps for in-demand STEM careers and the importance of programs that address the gaps. The report analyzed anonymized data from 328,000 Black U.S. middle and high school students who took YouScience’s Aptitude and Career Discovery tool from 2019 to 2023. This is the only scientifically-backed tool to apply computerized performance measures of aptitudes, interests, and AI-powered algorithms to activities that help identify best-fit career matches of all students, regardless of race or gender.

Historically, there has been limited Black representation in STEM-related fields. As of 2021, 9% of the STEM workforce was Black, which was an increase from 7% in 2011. While this growth is positive, new solutions are needed to help Black students explore STEM-related education and careers earlier.

“As a Black woman in STEM, I have seen first-hand the lack of representation for women, especially Black women, in these in-demand career fields. 4 ounces (1/2 cup) cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined

1/2 cup frozen Asian-style mixed vegetables, thawed

2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce

2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions

1 tablespoon chopped peanuts

Heat rice and quinoa cup according to package directions. In small, microwave-safe bowl, combine shrimp and vegetables. Microwave on high 30 seconds.

Whole Grain Sesame Chicken Stir-Fry

Prep time: 3 minutes

Cook time: 12 minutes

Servings: 3-4

1 bag Minute Instant Rice & Quinoa

1 cup vegetable broth

1 tablespoon sesame oil, divided

2 eggs, lightly beaten

1/2 cup thinly sliced red onion

2 garlic cloves, minced

2 cups rotisserie cooked chicken, shredded

2 cups frozen, Asian-style mixed vegetables, thawed

2 tablespoons soy sauce

Prepare rice and quinoa according to package directions, substituting broth for water.

In medium wok or skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1/2 tablespoon sesame oil. Add eggs and, using spatula, quickly soft scramble. Continue stirring eggs until light and fluffy. Remove from pan and reserve.

(StatePoint) Perhaps even more nerve-wracking than waiting for your child’s college acceptance letters is learning whether they’ve been awarded financial aid. Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designed to simplify the process have led to unforeseen hiccups and technical glitches, causing academic institutions to delay sending out financial aid award letters. However, once you finally get the results, it can give your family a better idea of what to do next.

“Our research shows that for a majority of parents, figuring out how to pay for college was the ‘road to college’ activity that caused them the most stress. By making a financial plan and prioritizing it, you can be well prepared to avoid the most common bumps in the road,”

explains Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer, College Ave.

Colatriano recommends using the spring to teach your child these valuable financial skills: how to set up a budget, how to pay bills and how to manage credit. If your family will potentially be borrowing to finance college, students should also gain an understanding of how loans work, and how the different terms of the loan will affect their monthly payments and overall loan cost.

Speaking of budget, you should set a realistic budget for yourself. A recent College Ave survey found that in addition to helping pay for tuition and housing costs, parents also contribute to their child’s phone bill (65%), health insurance (61%), food and groceries (42%), cable and internet bill (35%) and transportation (32%). Be realis-

tic about which expenses you can afford and where you want to ask your child to chip in.

Decode Award Letters

Financial aid award letters can look different for each school. Familiarize yourself with their components so that when they arrive, you’ll be ready to decipher them. Here’s what to look for:

1. Free money: The award letter will list whether your student is eligible for scholarships and grants (sometimes called Merit or Gift Aid). This is money you typically don’t need to pay back.

2. Federal Work-Study: Your child might be eligible for Federal Work-Study jobs. While jobs aren’t guaranteed, they can be a good opportunity to help cover educational expenses.

3. Student Loans: Schools will list any federal loans your child is eligible to receive. Helpful hint: They may be grouped with scholarships and grants. You should also note whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized. Because unsubsidized loans accrue interest while your student is enrolled and during deferment periods, this will affect the overall loan cost.

4. Other factors: Check if awards being offered are for all four years and understand what your child will need to do to continue being eligible for them, year-to-year.

To get an apples-to-apples look at the offers, calculate the net direct cost of each school by subtracting offered scholarships and grants from the cost of attendance (tuition, room, board, textbooks and fees). If applicable, you can subtract work-study aid too. You should also factor in expected increases in tuition, room, board and other fees.

Fill in the Gaps

If after doing the math, you find you have a financial gap to cover, look into private scholarships.
