2 NEWS briefly NEW LEAF ILLINOIS CELEBRATES EXPUNGEMENT MILESTONES, LOOKS FORWARD TO THE FUTURE With 2022 in full swing, New Leaf Illinois will continue its efforts to expunge cannabis records for Illinoisans across the state. Last year, New Leaf provided services to residents in more than 60% of Illinois counties – helping people of all demographics get a fresh start by removing barriers to employment, education, housing and more. New Leaf Illinois launched in November 2020, and last year was its first full year serving Illinois.

“Our 2021 work shows a strong baseline for growth and expansion, but we know there are many more people eligible,” said Beth Johnson, an attorney and Project Manager for New Leaf Illinois with the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation. “We’re eager to continue our outreach efforts and increase our impact.”

New Leaf Illinois will continue to offer free cannabis expungement services to the estimated 34,000 Illinoisans with records that were not automatically cleared after the state’s legalization of cannabis. With a network of 20 legal aid and advocacy organizations across the state, New Leaf is committed to overturning past cannabis convictions which disproportionately impacted Black and Latino communities.

“In 2022, our goal is to help as many folks as we can to expunge their past cannabis records,” said Johnson. “For those who are confused about whether their record has been automatically cleared or not, or whether they are eligible, please reach out to New Leaf — we can help you navigate the process.”

New Leaf helps people determine their eligibility for relief through an easy-to-use online registration portal www.newleafillinois.org or via phone at (855) 963-9532. Legal aid organizations within the New Leaf Illinois network provide free services in every region in Illinois.

CITY TREASURER MELISSA CONYEARS-ERVIN INTRODUCED CITY ORDINANCE TO MANDATE FOSSIL FUEL DIVESTMENT Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin, in partnership with Alderpeople George Cardenas (Ward 12 & Chair, Environment Committee), Scott Waguespack (Ward 32 & Chair, Committee on Finance), Maria Hadden (Ward 49) and Daniel La Spata (Ward 1), introduced an ordinance in the Chicago City Council to mandate the divestment of city funds from fossil fuel companies, an important step toward ensuring a clean energy future for our city and our planet.

Treasurer Conyears-Ervin is the chief sponsor of the ordinance, which already has the support of Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

“As City Treasurer, it is my responsibility to ensure that our city’s funds are managed sensibly and in a way that creates a stable fiscal future for Chicago and its residents,” said Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin.

“It is also my responsibility to ensure that our investments are reflective of our values, and that’s why I’m proud to introduce an ordinance that will mandate city funds be divested from fossil fuel companies. When I first took office, I chose to divest from fossil fuels to protect the health of our residents, our city, and our planet. In passing this ordinance, we will be sending a message that Chicago is permanently leaving dirty energy in the past and welcoming a clean energy future for generations to come.”

The ordinance will mandate this practice moving forward to ensure city money is not reinvested in fossil fuels. If passed, the ordinance will require the City Treasurer to update this exclusion list and report to the City Council Committee on Finance whether any changes have been made at least annually.

Author’s book uses Enneagram Test to help with relationships Continued from page 1

The Enneagram Test is a personality test that can offer insight into interpersonal relationships by putting people into nine different personality types. Griffin believes the Enneagram is a great tool for self-discovery and self-transformation.

“I knew that people needed tools to be able to help us really understand our purpose. We needed things to understand how we find healing and how do we find success in relationships,” he said. “When I know about myself, I can be in a better relationship with you and the people around me.”

When Griffin began to teach the Enneagram people told him that he needed to put it in a book. His book puts a little “afro sheen” to the test. Griffin wrote the book during the pandemic.

The test will help people understand how they operate in relationships and how people see the world. Griffin believes when people in relationships understand their Enneagram numbers and how people are wired, it can reduce conflict and partners won’t take things personally.

Part of the book is about success in relationships, whether it is a work relationship or romantic relationship.

Griffin believes the book can help people in the search for love. If people are in a romantic relationship and know their Enneagram number and their partners Enneagram number, they can navigate that relationship better. For instance, if someone is an 8 and has a strong personality, they have to

be careful not to get in a relationship with another person who also is an 8, it might lead to them clashing. “Two unhealthy 8’s have come together and some chemicals don’t mix,” he said.

In professional or work relationships, Griffin said it is important to build a team based on shared values and strengths. A team should have a mix of all different personalities. The goal is not to build a team based on one person but to build it with the mindset of bringing on people who complement what the team leader brings to the table. The Enneagram can help with that.

“Building a Better You” is Griffin’s second book. His first was about people understanding the environments in which they have to work and lead. The book, “The Transition Zone,” about change and transition was written in 2015.

Griffin teaches the Enneagram to organizations and leaders. Griffin believes the Enneagram Test also can be taught from a biblical point of view. Griffin also is the senior pastor at Oakdale Covenant Church of Chicago.

“If you look at the Enneagram, 1 is the good person, 2 is the loving person, 3 is an efficient person, 4 is the original person, 5 is the wise person, 6 is the loyal person, 7 is the joyful person, 8 is the powerful person, 9 is the peaceful person,” he said. “Guess what, those are the characteristics of God. God’s all of those things and I believe there’s a slice of God in all of us.”

MUSEUM’S HISTORIC BLACK CREATIVITY PROGRAM RETURN Black Creativity and its signature Juried Art Exhibition is open now through April 17 at the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI). MSI has hosted the annual celebration for more than 50 years. This exhibition is included with Museum entry.

THE JOFFREY BALLET ANNOUNCES 2022 WINNERS OF THE WINNING WORKS The Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet, announces the recipients of the twelfth annual Winning Works Choreographic Competition: Audrey Ipapo Baran, Joffrey Company Artist Edson Barbosa, Taylor Carrasco, and Derick McKoy. This announcement Joffrey Ballett follows a national call for ALAANA (African, Latinx, Asian, Arab and Native American) artists to submit applications, which began in June. The choreographers’ world premiere works will be showcased by the dancers of the Joffrey Studio Company and the Joffrey Academy Trainee Program.

Winning Works will be presented in four performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s Edlis Neeson Theater, 220 E. Chicago Ave. at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 18; at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 20.

Tickets for Winning Works are $30 and currently on sale for purchase at joffrey.org/winningworks. The world premiere works will be available to view digitally following the in-person performances. Streaming dates will be announced at a later date.

The Winning Works choreographic competition was created to recognize talented and emerging ALAANA choreographers and to provide them with a platform to showcase their original and innovative work. McKoy started his official training under Luctricia Welters and after a year, joined her dance company, Jubilee Dance Theater, as an apprentice. He furthered his training at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Arts Umbrella, BalletX, Ballet Hispanico, Springboard Danse Montreal, under scholarships, as well as NW Dance Project’s LAUNCH. McKoy has performed with Nimbus Dance, directed by Samuel Pott, Jeremy McQueen’s The Black Iris Project, and on seasons 1 and 2 of the hit tv-show POSE on FX. His choreographic work has been described as “authentic”, “dramatic”, and “important”. His developing collection of works have been performed at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, Ailey Studio Theater, Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance, Ades Performance Space, Youth American Grand Prix, the Nimbus Arts Festival, and the Jamaica Dance Festival.

Federal Affordable Connectivity Program Provides Eligible Low-IncomeHouseholds $30/month Toward the Cost of Internet Service The federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides eligible low-income households a credit up to $30 a month toward the cost of Internet service ($75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands). Participants in the program can apply the ACP credit toward the cost of participating plans from a variety of Internet Service Providers, including Comcast’s Internet Essentials program and all the company’s Xfinity Internet plans, as well as mobile services. Households that choose plans totaling $30 or less will essentially receive their service for free.

“Comcast has connected more than 10 million Americans to the Internet since we launched Internet Essentials, our low-cost broadband adoption program for low-income households, in 2011. Hunter’s CROWN Act passes Senate

A measure led by State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) to end hair discrimination in the workplace passed the Senate recently.

“No one should have to miss out on a job opportunity or miss a school graduation because of the hair that grows naturally out of their head,” Hunter said. “It’s 2022. As a nation, we should be past this petty discrimination.”

Senate Bill 3616 – also known as the Create a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural Hair (CROWN) Act – amends the Illinois Human Rights Act to provide that the term “race” includes traits historically associated with race, including, but not limited to, hair texture and protective hairstyles such as braids, locks and twists.

A recent study from Dove uncovered that 80% of African American women felt they needed to switch their hairstyle to align with more conservative workplace standards in order to fit in. Hair discrimination occurs not only in the workplace, but in schools across the country. Last year, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Jett Hawkins Actin response to a four-year old boy in Chicago who was told his braids violated his private school’s dress code.

“Black people should have the right to be expressive and creative with their hair and not worry about being ‘unprofessional’ or violating a conduct policy because of it,” Hunter said. “If it is wrong to judge by the color of one’s skin, isn’t it also wrong to judge by the way one styles their hair?” The Dove study also noted a bias against Black women with natural hairstyles in job recruitment. Black women with natural hairstyles were perceived to be less professional, less competent and less likely to be recommended for a job interview than Black women with straightened hairstyles and white women with either curly or straight hairstyles.

Black women with natural hairstyles also received more negative evaluations when they applied for a job in an industry with strong dress norms. The CROWN Act passed out of the Senate recently and awaits further consideration from the House.

Joyce offering residents resources for tax assistance

State Senator Patrick Joyce (D-Essex) is encouraging families in need of assistance filing their 2021 income taxes to take advantage of new assistance programs offered by the Internal Revenue Service and AARP. “Filing taxes can be stressful, but there are resources available to help,” said Joyce. “Please share this information with friends and loved ones who need assistance filing their tax return.”

The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs offers assistance to individuals who earn $58,000 a year or less, people aged 60 or older, people living with a disability and taxpayers with limited English-speaking skills.

The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program provides free tax assistance, with an emphasis on taxpayers over the age of 50 or who have low-to-moderate income. AARP membership is not required to receive assistance. “With the tax filing deadline date of April 18 just around the corner, it is important for Illinois taxpayers to know that filing assistance is available,” said Illinois Department of Revenue Director David Harris.

“Volunteers at these locations are certified by the IRS and ready to assist qualified individuals in filing their state and federal tax returns accurately and on time.”

Stadelman-sponsored measure to promote public trust in local government passes committee

To restore public trust in local government officials, State Senator Steve Stadelman (D-Rockford) is sponsoring a measure alongside Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford), to create a process to place local officials on administrative leave for those accused of violating their oath.

“We are ensuring that while criminal charges are pending, residents can have trust in their government to act appropriately,” Stadelman said.

“This allows townships and counties the ability to remove bad faith actors within the system.” Senate Bill 3460 creates a process in which countywide elected officials or township officers can be placed on administrative leave in the wake of a criminal charge for a crime or any offense in violation of their official oath. Specifically, this measure allows county or township boards to vote to determine if the official should be placed on administrative leave with a three-fifths vote.

The vote would then be sent to the state’s attorney for review of the crimes, and if it is determined the crimes were relevant to their duties, the state’s attorney would file a motion to place the elected official on administrative leave. “An elected official should not remain in office after violating an oath they took that breaks the trust of their community,” Stadelman said. “This process already exists for many other offices in Illinois – it only makes sense to apply this standard across the board.”

This legislation was born out of corruption charges levied in 2020 against Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz. While his trial is ongoing, the coroner continued to serve in his elected position and is accused by the Attorney General of continuing to engage in additional misconduct.

Senate Bill 3460 passed the Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 and moves forward for further consideration.

Education Department Announces $35 Million Competition to Improve Teacher Quality Program Aims to Recruit, Prepare, Retain and Support Teachers with a Focus on Equity, Diversity, and Increasing the Educator Pipeline The U.S. Department of Education is posting a Notice Inviting Applications for the Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) program, which will award $35 million to bolster teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate or “fifth-year” level (Pre-Baccalaureate Models), as well as teaching residency programs for individuals new to teaching that integrate relevant academic content and meaningful clinical experience (Residency Models).

“Across the country, we must continue the necessary work of developing a strong, diverse educator workforce for today and tomorrow,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “High-quality educator preparation programs and teacher residencies are integral to this effort.

Effective programs have positive effects on teacher candidates—including boosting the likelihood that they will remain in the profession—and they increase the impact that great teachers have on student learning.”

In keeping with Secretary Cardona’s priorities, this competition also includes four competitive priorities focused on educator diversity; student social, emotional, and academic needs; and student equitable access to opportunities and resources.

Research shows that high-quality residency models like those in the TQP program can expand the pool of well-prepared applicants entering the teaching profession, promote diversity of the workforce, and bring a wide range of experiences into the classroom to support students. In addition, the close partnership between school districts and colleges required by the TQP program ensures that preparation programs are closely aligned with practice. The Biden-Harris Administration believes that support for high-quality residency programs is a critical part of ensuring that all students have access to well-prepared and qualified educators, as these programs produce teachers who are more effective and likely to stay in the profession than less comprehensive pathways.

Applicants are also encouraged to apply for partnership grants for the establishment of Grow Your Own (GYO) Programs. The Biden-Harris Administration has called for more investment in high-quality teacher

preparation, including GYO programs, to strengthen teacher pipelines and address shortages, and increase and support the growth of teachers. As with teaching residency programs, GYO programs can help address teacher shortages by increasing retention rates while also enhancing educator diversity.

Additionally, the Leadership Program priority in the TQP program provides an opportunity for applicants to carry out an effective school leadership program that will prepare individuals for careers as superintendents, principals, early childhood education program directors, or other school leaders.

The Department recognizes the value of supporting educators and is committed to the providing resources and opportunities that lift up the educator workforce.
