WEBMD HEALTH HERO AWARDS HONOR RESEARCHERS, CAREGIVERS AND ADVOCATES TRANSFORMING THE IMPACT OF CANCER WebMD celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of researchers, health care professionals and advocates who are helping to transform the impact of cancer during its Health Heroes event in New York City recently.

Advocate, filmmaker, and cancer survivor Sandra Lee and 20/20 co-anchor, ABC News correspondent, and cancer survivor Amy Robach kicked off the event following opening remarks from WebMD CEO Bob Brisco. FIRST PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD NOW CLOSED ON PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL HEMP REGULATIONS The 45-day First Notice public comment period on proposed industrial hemp regulations closed at the end of business on February 11, 2019. Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) staff drafted proposed rules after the Industrial Hemp Act was signed into law in August 2018. This new law allows individuals or corporations licensed through IDOA to cultivate industrial hemp. IDOA will also register individuals or corporations that will process industrial hemp.

Once IDOA submits its comment responses and any proposed rule modifications to JCAR for review, that will open the Second Notice period. During that at least 45-day period, public comments on the updated proposed rules should be submitted directly to JCAR by letter, fax, phone, or email. IDOA will publish instructions on its website as to how to submit comments to JCAR once the Second Notice period is open. As soon as the rules are finalized and approved

by JCAR, IDOA will begin accepting applications for industrial hemp licenses and registrations.

City of Chicago Unveils New Street Sign That Honors Civil Rights Leader Continued from page 1

Ida B. Wells was an African-American journalist, abolitionist, feminist, and activist who dedicated her life to fighting for women’s rights and African American justice. To honor this important piece of black history and her legacy, street signs for the new Ida B. Wells Drive, formerly Congress Parkway, were recently unveiled in downtown Chicago.

“This was, relatively speaking, an easy fight but it wasn’t that easy. It was easy compared to the struggles that Ida B. Wells had to face early on in her life,” said Fourth Ward Alderman Sophia King who led the effort in City Hall.

“She truly was an original boss, spoke truth to power, and walked through fear into justice and changed the landscape of Chicago and the world.”

Wells was born into slavery in 1862 and was the oldest daughter in her family. Thanks to the Emancipation Proclamation, Wells, her family, and the rest of the Confederate slaves were given their freedom about six months after her birth, according to biography.com.

After the lynching of one of her friends, Wells began investigating

white mob violence across the south and was skeptical about the reasons black men were being lynched. She wrote several columns in local newspapers and published her findings in a pamphlet which enraged locals and after a few months of increasing threats of violence against her she decided to relocate to Chicago.

Once in Chicago, Wells became a leader in the women’s suffrage movement despite having to regularly confront white women within the movement who ignored lynchings and ridiculed her views, according to the National Women’s History Museum.

“Ida B. Wells spent her life as an activist and seeking to ensure that women, and black women in particular, were not isolated from political movements and activism despite the racism and sexism that we must often contend with even to this day. She founded the Alpha Suffrage Club right here in Chicago because she understood that

black women deserve the same political rights and access to the ballot despite efforts to the contrary to exclude them from the women suffrage movement,” said Juliana Stratton, lieutenant governor of Illinois.

This is the first official street name change in Chicago since South Parkway was renamed Martin Luther King Drive in 1968 and Ida B. Wells Drive is the first street in downtown Chicago to be named after an African American woman, according to Alderman King.

“It’s actually bittersweet that it has taken so long, but we are here,” said King. “Ida B. Wells said, ‘the people must know before they can act’ and as young people say, now we know. I want to thank all of you for joining us today and I’m glad to be joined by so many people that understand the significance of having the first street downtown named after an African American woman.”

Sex robots are here, but laws aren’t keeping up with the ethical and privacy issues they raise

The robots are here. Are the “sexbots” close behind?

From the Drudge Report to The New York Times, sex robots are rapidly becoming a part of the national conversation about the future of sex and relationships.

Behind the headlines, a number of companies are currently developing robots designed to provide humans with companionship and sexual pleasure – with a few already on the market.

Unlike sex toys and dolls, which are typically sold in off-the-radar shops and hidden in closets, sexbots may become mainstream. A 2017 survey suggested almost half of Americans think that having sex with robots will become a common practice within 50 years.

As a scholar of artificial intelligence, neuroscience and the law, I’m interested in the legal and policy questions that sex robots pose. How do we ensure they are safe? How will intimacy with a sex robot affect the human brain?

Would sex with a childlike robot be ethical? And what exactly is a sexbot anyway?

Defining ‘sex robot’ There is no universally accepted definition of “sex robot.” This may not seem important, but it’s actually a serious problem for any proposal to govern – or ban – them.

The primary conundrum is how to distinguish between a sex robot and a “sexy robot.” Just because a robot is attractive to a human and can provide sexual gratification, does it deserve the label “sex robot”?

It’s tempting to define them as legislatures do sex toys, by focusing on their primary use. In Alabama, the only state that still has an outright ban on the sale of sex toys, the government targets devices “primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs.”

definition to sex robots is that the latter increasingly provide much more than sex. Sex robots are not just dolls with a microchip. They will use self-learning algorithms to engage their partner’s emotions.

Consider the “Mark 1” robot, which resembles the actor Scarlett Johansson. It is regularly labeled a sex robot, yet when I interviewed its creator, Ricky Ma Tsz Hang, he was quick to clarify that Mark 1 is not intended to be a sex robot.

Rather, such robots will aim to assist with all sorts of tasks, from preparing a child’s lunch to keeping an elderly relative company.

Humans, of course, can navigate both sexual and nonsexual contexts adeptly. What if a robot can do the same? How do we conceptualize and govern a robot that can switch from “play with kids” mode during the day to “play with adults” mode at night?

Thorny legal issues In a landmark 2003 case, Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court struck down Texas’ sodomy law and established what some scholars have described as a right to sexual privacy.

There is currently a split among circuit courts in how Lawrence should be applied to state restrictions on the sale of sex toys. So far, Alabama’s ban has been upheld, but I suspect that all sex toy bans

will eventually be struck down. If so, it seems unlikely that states will be able to wholesale restrict sales of sex robots generally.

Bans on childlike sex robots, however, may be different.

It is not clear whether anyone in the U.S. already owns a childlike sex robot. But even the possibility of child sex robots prompted a bipartisan House bill, the Curbing Realistic Exploitative Electronic Pedophilic Robots Act, or CREEPER. Introduced in 2017, it passed unanimously six months later.

State politicians will surely follow suit, and we are likely to see many attempts to ban childlike sex robots. But it’s unclear if such bans will survive constitutional challenge.

On one hand, the Supreme Court has held that prohibitions on child pornography do not violate the First Amendment because the state has a compelling interest in curtailing the effects of child pornography on the children portrayed. Yet the Supreme Court has also held that the Child Pornography Prevention Act of 1996 was overly broad in its attempt to prohibit “child pornography that does not depict an actual child.”

Childlike sex robots are robots, not humans. Like virtual child pornography, the development of a childlike sex robot does not require interaction with any children. Yet it might also be argued that childlike sex robots would have serious detrimental effects that compel state action.

Safe and secure?

Perhaps someday sex robots will become sentient. But for now, they are products.

And a question almost entirely overlooked is how the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission should regulate the hazards associated with sex robots. Existing sex products are not well regulated,

and this is cause for concern given the multitude of ways in which sex robots could be harmful to their users.

For example, dangers lurk even in a seemingly innocent scene where a sex robot and human hold hands and kiss. What if the sexbots’ lips were manufactured with lead paint or some other toxin?

And what if the robot, with the strength of five humans, accidentally crushes the human’s finger in a display of passion?

It’s not just physical harm, but security as well. For instance, just as a human partner learns by remembering what words were soothing, and what type of touch was comforting, so too is a sex robot likely to store and process massive amounts of intimate information. What regulations are in place to ensure that this data remains private? How vulnerable will the sex robot be to hacking?

Could the state use sex robots as surveillance devices for sex offenders?

Sexbots in the city Whether and how governments regulate sex robots will depend on what we learn – or what we assume – about the effects of sexbots on individuals and society.

In 2018, the Houston City Council made headlines by enacting an ordinance to ban the operation of what would have been America’s first so-called robot “brothel.” At one of the community meetings, an attendee warned: “A business like this would destroy homes, families, finances of our neighbors and cause major community uproars in the city.”

But dire predictions like this are pure speculation. At present there is no evidence of how the introduction of sex robots would affect either individuals or society.

For instance, would a man who uses a childlike sex robot be more

or less likely to harm an actual human child? Would robots be a substitute for humans in relationships or would they enhance relationships as sex toys might? Would sex robots fill a void for those who are lonely and without companions?

Just as pilots use virtual flight simulators before they fly a real plane, could virgins use sex robots to safely practice sex before trying the real thing?

Put another way, there are far more unanswered questions about sex robots than there are actual sex robots. Although it’s hard to conduct empirical studies until sexbots are more prevalent, informed governance requires researchers to explore these topics urgently. Otherwise, we may see reactionary governance decisions based on supposition and fear of doomsday scenarios.

A brave new world A fascinating question for me is how the current taboo on sex robots will ebb and flow over time.

There was a time, not so long ago, when humans attracted to the same sex felt embarrassed to make this public. Today, society is similarly ambivalent about the ethics of “digisexuality” – a phrase used to describe a number of human-technology intimate relationships. Will there be a time, not so far in the future, when humans attracted to robots will gladly announce their relationship with a machine?

No one knows the answer to this question. But I do know that sex robots are likely to be in the American market soon, and it is important to prepare for that reality. Imagining the laws governing sexbots is no longer a law professor hypothetical or science fiction.

It’s a real-world challenge that society is about to face for the first time. I hope that the law gets it right.

Historic high school still opening doors for black students

When Wendell Phillips Academy High School was built in 1904, it became the first public high school in Chicago to have a mostly black, student population even

though it’s named after a white man.

The school is named after a Boston attorney, abolitionist and social reformer, who became the antislavery movement’s most powerful orator and, after the Civil War, was the chief proponent of full civil rights for freed slaves, said Timuel Black, a Chicago

historian and civil rights activist.

“He was one of the few white men back then who fought for equality for slaves,” said Black, who once attended Phillips high school. “I just hope the students at Wendell Phillips are being taught in the classroom who this man is and what he did to help

blacks.”

And now 115 years after Phillips, 244 E. Pershing Road, was founded the school still has a mostly all-black population. Today, 98 percent of its (703) students are black, according to Chicago Public Schools data.

Keith Ovid Tate, A Shining Star in the Greater Chatham Community

Luke 12:48 discusses that we have been entrusted with certain God-given treasures, and faithfulness requires that we manage those treasures wisely and unselfishly. If we are blessed with talents, wealth, knowledge, time, and the like, it is expected that we use these well to glorify God and to benefit others. To whom much is given, much is required. The life of Keith Ovid Tate embodied this scripture to the fullest. Keith Tate was born the eldest of three children on April 14, 1949 to the union of Elwin Tate and Ola M Dixon.

The Tate family moved to the Chatham community in 1955. During that year a bond was formed for the betterment of the community; Elwin Tate, Washington Birney and William Cousins founded the Chatham and Avalon Park Community Council (CAPCC). Together with other community residents, they sought to achieve excellence in educational opportunities, business development, quality housing and crime reduction.

Black people were starting to move to Chatham and surrounding areas and this group was totally committed to bring about a better way of life for its residents. CAPCC is volunteer organization serving the residents in the boundaries of 75th to 87th and from Cottage Grove to the Dan Ryan. In 1983, Elwin Tate served as the Executive Vice President and in 1987, he served as the President. Mary Ellen Drake (former CAPCC President), recalls how her father (a council participant) and Elder Tate would bring Keith and her to the meetings on the second Monday of each month. A sense of responsibility for the community was nurtured in them at an early age.

Keith was a graduate of St Dorothy Elementary School and Hales Franciscan High School.

He matriculated at Colorado State University obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. He married Shirley Brown Tate and raised two sons, Marcus Tate and Rawling Brown. He served over 25 years as a Data Center

Manager for the University of Illinois Medical Center. He also served as a Manager of Private Practice at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and a Director of Patient Accounts at St. Mary Medical Center in Gary, Indiana.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Keith served as the Executive Vice President and President of CAPCC for over 20 years. James Holloway (best friend from grammar school) describes Keith as a man of his word, a deeply caring individual and a great friend. While taking care of the needs of his community, he retired early to be a tireless caregiver for his parents and wife. He was the go-to person in the Chatham community. If you needed a barber, call Keith. If you wanted to know about an upcoming event, call Keith. If you needed to know the location of the nearest food bank, call Keith. He was dedicated and compassionate.

During Keith’s administration at the CAPCC, Joe Moore (fellow community activist) recalls the “Arms around Chatham” initiative in 1987. Under the leadership of Camilla Render, several hundreds of residents met at Cole Park to advocate for neighborhood vitality. They raised money to buy two vacant lots in the community to be used for community development and

held hands around the Chatham community boundaries. Mayor Harold Washington joined the group and the event was featured on “60 Minutes”.

As a revered leader and community advocate, Keith and CAPCC fought along with Alderman Bobby Rush to bring businesses such as Target, Nike and Chase Bank to the community. According to the CAPCC Executive Vice President and Economic Development Chair at the time, Mary Ellen Drake, “not only did we bring jobs to the community, we petitioned these companies to employ African Americans in management positions.” Chase’s branch manager, James Gilliam, is African American. CAPCC also worked with Donzell and Alisa Starks to bring black owned movie theaters (ICE Theatre) to inner city neighborhoods like Chatham. And one of the most powerful financial developments that Keith and Drake helped the implement during their administration involved an investor buyback deal with Home Depot.

About 40 Chatham and West Chatham investors bought the land where Home Depot now sits and leased it to the corporation. Local investors still control this vital land resource and continue to receive dividends.

Keith was appalled at Target’s November 2018 decision to

leave Chatham and Morgan Park and felt that they are disrespecting the community and taking away jobs.

Keith recruited younger people to pass on the torch, he worked to increase property values, and took actions to get better jobs, restaurants and schools in the community. He was diplomatic and had a fair demeanor with everyone from the bank president to the bus driver to the unemployed mother to the school teacher. Milas Armour, III (best friend of 55 years and best man at his wedding) described Keith as an “activist for all! …treating everyone with dignity and always making time for those in need. A loving and kind-hearted man.” Keith was elected as the President Emeritus by the Board of Directors of CAPCC in 2015 and was the longest serving President of all the CAPCC Presidents!

Drake and Armour both mentioned that Keith “fought for our schools, churches and neighborhoods!” He was active at his church, St. Dorothy and often helped needy families with boxes of food. He was committed to his alma mater, Hales Franciscan High School, where he worked on alumni fundraisers and scholarship events. Armour relayed that he was the glue that kept his pack of friends together. If one of them lost a family member, Keith would be right there with a fish or chicken dish.

In June 2016, the Greater Chatham Initiative (GCI) was launched as a registered 501(c) (3) organization. Funded by several corporations, this commission serves to combat rising crime and quality of life issues, to increase economic and business development and to serve the needs of the following communities: Grand Crossing, Chatham, Auburn Gresham, and Avalon Park. Keith served as a board member of GCI until his untimely death.

Kindly referred to as the Mayor of Chatham, Keith Tate was called to our Lord, on December 17, 2018. Just four short months after his wife passed away. Longtime friends, Chatham community residents and the city of Chicago “thank God for the life and legacy of one who taught us all how to love and give unconditionally.”

Energy Assistance Available Springfield – The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced that income qualified households can apply for winter heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

If your last thirty day income has been affected by the federal shutdown, if you lost your job, if you are a student living away from home struggling to pay your utility bills, LIHEAP can help. A single-person household can qualify with a monthly gross income of up to $1,518; a two-person household up to $2,058; a family of three up to $2,598; and a family of four up to $3,138.

Benefits are paid directly to energy vendors on behalf of eligible households. The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.

LIHEAP applications are processed through a network of 35 local administering agencies around the state. Customers must bring all required documentation when applying for assistance, including: • Proof of gross income from all household members for the 30-day income period beginning with the date of the application.

• A copy of their current heat and electric bills issued within the last 30 days (if they pay for their energy directly).

• A copy of their rental agreement (if they are renting) showing that utilities are included, the monthly rental amount and landlord contact information.

• Proof of Social Security numbers for all household members.

• Proof that their household received TANF or other benefits, such as Medical Eligibility or SNAP, if receiving assistance from the Illinois Department of Human Services.

Reconnection Assistance is also available for households who are disconnected from their energy source needed for heating or are under imminent threat of disconnection (are within 7 days of being disconnected or have less than 25% in their propane tank).

Furnace Assistance is available as well for households who qualify for LIHEAP, have an inoperable heating system, and are in need of furnace repair or replacement.

LIHEAP heating assistance applications, including Reconnection Assistance, will continue to be accepted through May 31, 2019 or until funding is exhausted. Furnace Assistance applications are accepted through March 31, 2019, or until funding is exhausted. Applications are taken on a firstcome, first-served basis.

Historic high school still opening doors for black students Continued from page 3 Principal Matthew Sullivan said the school gained 200 students this school year, in part, because CPS, the nation’s third largest school district with 361,314 students, closed four high schools in Englewood last year.

“Getting more students this year is good considering the building could accommodate about 1,100 students,” said Sullivan, who has been principal since 2014. “Wendell Phillips is a neighborhood school but we have students who travel from across town to attend here and I think that says a lot about us and what we offer our students.”

One of those students is freshman Asia Piggott, 15, who resides in South Shore on the Far East Side of Chicago.

“I could attend a school closer to my home and not travel so far but I [like] Phillips because this school has a lot of history and people tend to look over that,” said Piggott. “I normally leave my house around 6 a.m. (by bus) to make sure I make it to school for my first class at 8:15.”

Other students like Angelia Cosey, a 17-year-old senior, said she likes Phillips because teachers and counselors encourage students to consider college after high

school.

“Teachers here push you to want to be in college. They have that focus and drive for you even if you don’t have it for yourself,” said Cosey, who plans to study nursing at Eastern Illinois University this fall. “It is a graduation requirement that all seniors apply to five colleges and five scholarships.

They do this because they want us to succeed.”

She added that for those students who do not plan on attending college, the school provides other options, such as assistance with applying to the military or a vocational training program.

When Sullivan first began working at Phillips in 2010 as a history teacher, he said for the first four days of school, only one student showed up for class.

“That was a signal as to how bleak things had gotten. The one student that came to school during that time told me stories about Phillips,” recalled Sullivan. “And basically what he said reminded me of the opening scene of the (1989) movie ‘Lean on Me’ (starring Morgan Freeman.”)

But since that time Bronzeville high school has accomplished a lot, said Sullivan, including its varsity football team winning

the state championship in 2015 and 2017.

Trevon Walker, 18, is a member of the championship football team.

“For me, football was a huge plus to be here. But besides that, it is a good school for any student regardless of race,” said Walker, a senior who lives in Roseland on the Far South Side.

Aside of athletics, Sullivan said students have improved overall scores on tests, such as the ACT (American College Test).

“Wendell Phillips became a ‘turnaround school’ in 2010 and that’s when the Academy of Urban School Leadership (AUSL) began managing the school as it still does today,” explained Sullivan. “But in the last nine years we have made improvements both in and outside the classroom. And I am proud to say we have maintained a 100-percent, college acceptance rate for the last four years, while our 2018 graduating class received almost $11 million in scholarships.”

When a school goes through a turnaround, the nonprofit AUSL takes over daily management of the school for CPS, and all the employees, including the principal, must reapply for their jobs.

One downside about attending Phillips is the dress code, said Alexis Pruitt, an

18-year-old senior.

“They are deaf on us wearing our uniform no matter what,” contends Pruitt, who also lives in South Shore. “They take this uniform thing way over board sometimes.”

Since 2000, demographics in Bronzeville has changed, according to census data, from predominantly black, low-income residents to now include more middle-class whites.

And while Sullivan said he does not think that has made a big difference with Phillips, students said more diversity among students would improve the school’s culture.

“Our school has tried to diversify the student population but I think when you have a school with limited resources, diversity is not an easy thing to do,” said Shameir Faulkner, a 17-year-old senior residing in Avalon Park. “The world is not all black and after we leave college we will have to enter the ‘real world,’ which consists of all nationalities, and it would be good for us to be exposed to other races before we graduate.”

Ultimately, Sullivan said Phillips will get back to its ‘glory days’ and when it does, he plans to welcome it back with open arms.

“The school was a beacon of greatness in the 1940s and 1950s, said Sullivan. “And that is where I want to see the school return.”

Marvin Gaye's Never-Released 1972 Tamla/Motown Album, 'You're The Man,' Set For Global Release In celebration of Marvin Gaye's 80th birthday on April 2, Motown/UMe will release his never-issued 1972 Tamla/Motown album, You're The Man, in 2LP gatefold vinyl and digital editions on March 29. "What's Going On," "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," and "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," the three singles from his universally acclaimed album What's Going On, had each hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart (since renamed Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs) and Top 10 Pop the year before.

His new single, "You're The Man" – a percolating, sarcastic riff on political non-action issued as the U.S. presidential campaign was kicking off – reached No. 7 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart. He saw Motown schedule a You're The Man album (catalog number Tamla 316). But when the lead single didn't cross over Pop, stalling at No. 50, Marvin retreated. Ambivalent about recording, stubborn about moving to Los Angeles with Berry Gordy and Motown, Marvin by his actions proclaimed no more new Marvin Gaye music.

Or so it seemed.

In this singular and transitional year for the late music legend, Gaye recorded more than an album's worth of music in Detroit and L.A. He produced himself, creating a suite of aching ballads; he worked with songwriters-becoming-producers Willie Hutch, then known mainly for the Jackson 5 smash "I'll Be There," but soon to be lauded for his film scores to The Mack and Foxy Brown; and with Pam Sawyer and Gloria Jones, whose "Piece of Clay" for Marvin decades later became a smash in the 1995 film Phenomenon.

He cut two sought-after tracks with Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell, half of the hit-making machine behind the Jackson 5; he got together with Hal Davis, who was preparing a Marvin Gaye-Diana Ross album, to cut another topical gem, "The World Is Rated X." And Marvin funnelled his anger over the Vietnam War, and his brother's experiences there, into a sequel of sorts to "What's Going On," the poetic holiday ballad, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas." He even re-cut "You're The Man" as an eerie funk jam, perhaps for the LP as a bookend to the single.

None of these tracks or any other on the LP, except the single, were issued at the time.

Three tracks from the album are newly mixed

by SaLaAM ReMi, the songwriter and producer long associated with Nas, the Fugees, and Amy Winehouse: "My Last Chance," "Symphony," and "I'd Give My Life For You." Also included is the rare, long LP version of Gaye's cancelled 1972 Christmas single, plus an unreleased vault mix of its instrumental B-side. Over the years, songs from You're The Man have been included on several CD releases but 15 of the album's 17 tracks have not been released on vinyl until now.

You're The Man's 2LP vinyl edition includes new liner notes by Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz.

In his essay, Ritz delves into Gaye's deeply personal internal conflict as a source of creative vigor and emotional burden as he experienced What's Going On's massive success and all that came with it. "Now I could do what I wanted," Gaye told Ritz in an interview that first appeared in Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye. "For most people that would be a blessing. But for me the thought was heavy.

They said I'd reached the top, and that scared me because Mother used to say, 'First ripe, first rotten.'

When you're at the top there's nowhere to go but down. No, I needed to keep going up – raising my consciousness – or I'd fall back on my behind.

When would the war stop? That's what I wanted to know – the war inside my soul."

Despite his inner turmoil, that same year Gaye recorded a duets album with Diana Ross, and he accepted an offer to write what became his landmark Trouble Man film score. A year later, he released Let's Get It On, the biggest hit of his career.

In addition to You're The Man, Motown/UMe will release a new expanded edition of Marvin Gaye's 1965 album, A Tribute To The Great Nat King Cole, digitally on March 15. Honoring what would have been Cole's 100th birthday, the album's original mono mix makes its digital debut with the new edition, which also adds more than a dozen bonus tracks, including six alternate takes from the studio sessions.

Chicago Public Library Celebrates African American History Month In honor of African American History Month in February, Chicago Public Library will feature a variety of programs for kids, teens and adults highlighting the culture, history and achievements of African Americans.

Turn Back the Clock was created in partnership with the “The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists”, based at the University of Chicago, and reflects the importance of ongoing public awareness and engagement in the critical issues captured in the movement of the Clock’s minute hand. The Doomsday Clock, a symbol created by this group of scientists and policy experts, indicates and assesses existential risks to society, with a particular focus on nuclear risk and climate change. In January 2018, the Clock’s move forward to two minutes to midnight captured global attention, further emphasizing why this symbol matters now more than ever.

As guests explore Turn Back the Clock, they will learn about the significance of the Doomsday Clock and how it has evolved over the last 70 years to include newer risks that we face today. Bridges to the Blues will showcase, young hip-hop artists performing original blues material for a chance to perform at the Chicago Blues Festival in Millennium Park, June 7-9.

Additionally, a ChicagoMade A&R Audition open to all music genres will be held on Saturday, October 25.

Like the Gospel Music A&R Audition, local artists and bands will get the opportunity to showcase their work live in front of major label A&R executives. Both solo artists and bands are invited to apply FREE of charge. All artists and bands must submit an application to be considered.

A committee of industry professionals will review all submissions based on the criteria below and will choose artists/bands to fill a very limited number of audition slots. Registration will begin in September.

The ChicagoMade A&R Auditions have become very successful and well received within the music industry.

At the October 26, 2018 ChicagoMade A&R Audition, a number of participating artists received opportunities offered by industry executives that included: l A creative meeting with music producer Kosine at Chicago Recording Company l A talent consultation with Radio Disney Network’s Phil Guerini, with a possible performance opportunity on a Radio Disney l A meeting in Nashville, TN, with a Big Machine Label Group A&R staff member l A chance to perform for the A&R staff of Empire Distribution and Records at a private offsite listening session l And performance opportunities at the 39th Annual Taste of Chicago The Professional Development Series is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

Getting The Word Out To promote kidney health and raise awareness of kidney disease, Rice made a series of PSAs for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). The NKF is the largest, most comprehensive and longstanding organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease.

Given Rice’s genuine concern about and personal connection to the disease, NKF enlisted the widely beloved sports legend to help to speak to the general public as well as kidney patients. He already has lots of practice doing so up close and personally whenever he joins his brother at a neighborhood dialysis center in Jackson, Miss.

“I’d go there to mainly be with my brother, of course, but I always walk around the room to say hello and socialize with the other dialysis patients,” Rice said. “You don’t realize it until you see for yourself in centers that there are lots of people on dialysis. It puts everything in perspective whenever I start complaining. When I visit the dialysis center, people often know who I am and are happy to see me, and if I can bring a smile to some faces and make them forget even for a second, that warms my heart. That’s how I felt playing football, seeing the smiles in the stands and helping people to forget problems for a little while.”

Rice is also part of NKF’s continuing and growing Heart Your Kidneys (#HeartYourKidneys) public campaign to help elevate awareness of the kidneys to the status of other vital organs such as the heart. He is amazed that most people know very little about their kidneys and that some don’t know the kidneys are located in the lower back below the rib cage—or that each person has two. Rice hopes his new PSAs with NKF will help change that.

“It’s important to me to keep working hard to get the word out with NKF, because you can see that this really hits home for me in more ways than one,” Rice said.
