2 NEWS Assessor’s Office Refunds $15 Million To Cook County Neighborhoods In figures released today, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi announced the collection of more than $15 million dollars over the past three years from people receiving tax exemptions for which they were not eligible. The office collected the funds from taxpayers who did not meet the state eligibility requirements and from estates of those who were recently deceased. Of the $5.1 million collected in 2021, $3.5 million was refunded back to communities in Cook County to pay for services such as schools, parks, libraries, and first responders. “As the Cook County Assessor, one of my most important jobs is to ensure property tax savings exemptions only go to those who qualify,” said Assessor Kaegi. “Since the beginning of my administration, our Erroneous Exemptions Investigations Department has done this work at no cost to Cook County taxpayers.

Automatic renewals of exemptions over the last two years helped ease the administrative burden on homeowners during the height of the pandemic. To ensure that only qualified households received property tax savings, the Erroneous Investigation Exemption (EEI). Department conducted extensive audits. As a result of these audits, the EEI department recovered more than $1.4 million over the past three years, including more than 300 exemptions that would have otherwise been received on behalf of deceased individuals.

Since Assessor Kaegi took office in 2019, the Erroneous Exemptions Investigations department has operated at a surplus at no cost to Cook County taxpayers. The cost of salaries and investigations conducted by the department is paid through late fees and penalties charged to those who received exemptions for which they were not qualified. Common findings are households that no longer meet the income requirements or receive exemptions on dual properties. Any surplus funds are used to pay for the operations of the department in the following year.

Automatic renewal of exemptions will be granted again this year and the EEI department will continue its rigorous audits to ensure that only those who qualify continue to receive exemptions. In March and April, homeowners who may no longer qualify for exemptions will be mailed letters informing them that they must reapply. In the event that a homeowner discovers that they are no longer eligible, they can also fill out a waiver form, removing the exemption.

Obsidian Collection Offers Newly Minted NFTs of Rare Photos of Dr. Martin Luther King The Obsidian Collection is evolving its consumer-facing digital photo portal, Obsidian Images, to offer NFTs of rare photographs of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during his historic visit to Chicago in 1966. Captured by the legendary John Tweedle, the first African American photographer hired by a major metropolitan newspaper, the NFTs chronicle King challenging Chicago’s slumlords, institutional racism, and Mayor Richard J. Foot Locker, Inc and LISC announce funding for 16 organizations NEW YORK PRNewswire -- Foot Locker, Inc., through the Foot Locker Foundation, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) have announced grant funding for nonprofit community organizations that empower youth in Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.

Known as the Foot Locker Foundation Community Empowerment Program, the $3 million joint effort was announced last year to bridge gaps driven by racial inequity and promote youth empowerment and community wellness—all while supporting community-based organizations led by people of color.

For both LISC and Foot Locker, Inc., this funding is part of larger national efforts focused on economic opportunity and racial equity. The program draws from Foot Locker, Inc.’s $200 million commitment to its Leading Education and Economic Development (LEED) initiative, which is focused on fueling education and economic opportunity within the Black community. It also connects to LISC’s Project 10X strategy to break down systemic barriers and support racial justice.

In this first round of funding of $1.26 million, LISC and Foot Locker, Inc. identified 16 high-impact programs across 12 metro

areas. A second round of funding is planned for spring 2022.

The grants also respond to the philanthropic gap facing BIPOC-led organizations. In fact, a 2020 assessment from The Bridgespan Group and Echoing Green found that Black-led nonprofits, like those included among the grantees, had unrestricted net assets that were 76 percent lower than those of White-led groups, making it more difficult to operate their organizations and grow their impact.

“The past few years have been difficult for young people—particularly in Black and Brown communities that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic,” noted LISC CEO Lisa Glover.The 16 organizations funded by the Community Empowerment Program have been awarded grants ranging from $25,000$100,000 each, depending on the programs being supported. Gary Teachers Union President to Testify on Proposed State School Takeover

GARY, Ind.—The proposed state takeover of the Gary public schools is a terrible example of lawmakers more interested in a power grab than actually working with educators and community to make beneficial improvements, the president of the Gary Teachers Union will testify at a House hearing Thursday.

The House Education Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on HB 1187, which would create a permanent state-appointed advisory school board for the Gary Community School Corporation and would prohibit the existence of a teachers union and ban collective bargaining.

“Let’s be clear: state takeovers are a harmful power grab devoid of actual ideas or plans to improve schools. Takeovers have failed in city after city because their focus is on taking away the voices of local education officials, educators and parents, not investing in proven programs, services and funding to truly move the needle,” said GTU President GlenEva Dunham.

On December 15, 1,363 payments went out to hardworking families across Illinois. According to Columbia University, these monthly payments are reducing food insecurity, and families overwhelmingly spent this money on food and other basic needs.

“Prior to the passage of the American Rescue Plan, too many children and families who would benefit most from a Child Tax Credit were left behind including 48% of children in Illinois’ Second Congressional District,” said Congresswoman Kelly. “Now, after six months of payments, the evidence is clear. The expanded and improved monthly Child Tax Credit works. We must continue the progress brought to Illinois families by President Biden and Congressional Democrats’ American Rescue Plan. Over the long term, research has found that an extra $3,000 in a family’s annual income when a child is younger than five leads to 19% higher future earnings, and a growing body of academic research finds that public investments in children yield significant long-term returns with economy-wide benefits, as healthier, more educated kids grow up to be more productive workers with higher earnings. Bake 16-18 minutes until eggs are set. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
