BASIC ACTIONS CAN STOP LIFE-THREATENING BLEEDING, HELP BYSTANDERS SAVE LIVES WASHINGTON, DC — Bleeding is the leading cause of preventable trauma-related death in the United States.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recently partnered with local emergency care experts for Stop the Bleed Day which was held on on March 31, 2018.

The campaign’s goal was to equip the general public with the tools and knowledge to become immediate responders and help stop life-threatening bleeding.

After ensuring their own safety, anyone can start the “ABCs of Bleeding Injuries,” according to an ACEP press release which include: (A)lert. Get help by calling 911 yourself or telling somebody to call 911.

(B)leeding. Find the bleeding injury. Open or remove clothing over the wound to see it clearly. Look for and identify “life-threatening” bleeding.

(C)ompress. Apply pressure to stop the bleeding by: 1. Covering the wound with a clean cloth and applying pressure by pushing directly on it with both hands, OR; 2. Using a tourniquet, OR; 3. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL WORKERS ILLINOIS CHAPTER ENDORSES JB PRITZKER FOR GOVERNOR CHICAGO – The Illinois chapter of the National Association of Social Workers recently endorsed JB Pritzker for governor. NASW-IL advocates for over 20,000 licensed social workers in the state of Illinois, 6,000 of which are active members. The endorsement comes after JB Pritzker secured the Democratic nomination for governor.

“It is time to think big, it is time for a new direction. Our best chance for a new Illinois is under the leadership of JB Pritzker,” said NASW-IL spokesman Kyle Hillman.

he Best of Black Harvest Film Festival West has returned to the Garfield Park Conservatory this year with a screening of Blueprint for Bronzeville, a film that chronicles the efforts of Housing Bronzeville as they attempted to bring affordable single-family homes to the neighborhood in 2009.

The screening is part of the Best of Black Harvest Film Festival West, a prequel to the Best of Black Harvest Film Festival happening in August, which gives audiences the opportunity to experience films made by emerging and established Black filmmakers, and to view films that tell the stories of the Black experience, according to the Gene Siskel Film Center website.

Blueprint for Bronzeville follows Housing Bronzeville, an activist group who at the time, was working to ensure a vibrant, politically empowered, and economically diverse Bronzeville community by fighting for affordable home ownership through the establishment of a Bronzeville Housing Trust Fund, according to the Housing Bronzeville website.

The film was produced by Columbia College of Chicago film students Arlen Parsa and Tristan Hanson. Since filming the documentary in 2009 both have graduated and gone on to work on new film projects. The two film students were not Chicago natives and were looking to make a documentary that would answer their questions about segregation and gentrification in Chicago.

“Bronzeville is a really interesting neighborhood from a gentrification standpoint. We started looking at different community groups, we knew there was the Olympics bid going on and we thought there would possibly be some Olympics related gentrification or displacement. We basically starting scoping out all these different community groups,” said Parsa.

Housing Bronzeville stood out to the producers because they were not taking any funding from the city and they were fearless, according to Parsa.

of the group was really interesting as well. The leadership of the group was made up largely of African American women and that was really interesting and different than a lot of other groups,” said Parsa.

While the project was filmed almost ten years ago, the content is still relevant today, according to Parsa.

“Here we are several years after the bulk of this film has been shot and you can go back to the same empty lots and they are in the exact same condition. We have had two mayors over this period of time and neither one of them has been able to move things forward in a really substantial way when it comes to affordable home ownership in Bronzeville. I think it is unfortunately still pretty relevant,” said Parsa.

grapples with deep racial and economic injustices and inequality in communities from coast to coast, the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and Church of God in Christ (COGIC) recently launched a national effort to ensure that the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the 1968 Memphis sanitation strikers live on with a new generation of activists. With the goal of advancing labor and civil rights and tackling issues plaguing low-income communities nationwide, the I AM 2018 campaign is transforming Memphis into the birthplace of a new political movement and aggressive voter education and civic engagement program to mobilize turnout for the 2018 elections and beyond. The campaign was launched on April 2 and is continuing today on April 4.

Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. Fifty years to the day of his assassination- the country’s most prominent civil rights, faith, labor, entertainment and other leaders are holding the first-of-itskind trainings, mobilization and commemoration activities across the city, including at Mason Temple COGIC, the site of Dr. King’s final, prophetic “I’ve been to the Mountaintop” speech.

Alongside these trainings, prominent journalists, academics, community leaders and subject experts are joining a three-day Mountaintop Conference featuring panels on criminal justice reform, minority youth education, the future of American workers and the intersection of labor, faith and civil rights.

“I AM 2018 isn’t just a reflection on the past; it’s a call to action for the future. Dr. King and the Memphis strikers knew that you can’t achieve economic justice without racial justice,” said AFSCME President Lee Saunders.

Over the past few weeks, activists, elected officials, students, workers and other leaders in the “I AM 2018” campaign have been organizing and building support for their work this year and beyond.

sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker who were crushed to death in 1968 and sparked the strike of 1,300 fellow workers that brought Dr. King to Memphis.

On February 24, two days before the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on a case that could threaten workers’ rights, thousands of working people, civil rights, labor leaders and families flooded the streets of every major city to demand freedom from want and hate and call for the U.S. to unrig its broken political and economic systems. Since then, college students and other young filmmakers have been submitting videos that connect Dr. King’s fight for justice to today’s movements for social change. The winning submissions, judged by Hans Charles, Dorian Parks, co-founder of Geeks of Color, and award-winning filmmakers Madeleine Hunt Erlich and Shahin Izadi were screened at Mason Temple on April 3rd.

America Is Seeing A Flood Of ‘Flood Cars’ (NAPSI)—Recent research suggests drivers may be behind the wheel of more than 325,000 previously flooded vehicles.

That’s a 20 percent increase from 2016 and a stark reminder to consumers to do due diligence when used-car shopping.

ONE WOMAN’S STORY “I bought a car last year and the seller never told us anything about it being a flood car,” said Charlene Geiger from Pennsylvania. “When we got home and ran a Carfax, there it was—a flood car from Hurricane Sandy. It showed that the seller bought it as a salvage car and the title was washed when he brought it to Pennsylvania. We lost $16,000 over all of it.”

WHERE TO BE MOST WARY Vehicles reported as flood damaged by a state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), insurance companies and more have washed up in every state.

In addition, several hundred thousand more flooded cars may emerge from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Historically, about half the vehicles damaged by floods end up back on the market. Flooded cars rot from the inside out as water corrodes the mechanical parts, shorts the electrical system, and compromises safety features like air bags and anti-lock brakes.

Health concerns are an added problem, as mold and bacteria permeate the soft parts of the car.

“Our data shows there’s still much work to be done in helping consumers avoid buying flooddamaged cars,” said Dick Raines, president of Carfax. “They can, and do, show up all over the country, whether it be a few miles or hundreds of miles from where the flooding occurred. With two devastating storms like Harvey and Irma, it’s vital for used-car buyers everywhere to protect themselves from flooded cars that may wind up for sale.
