STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN PRESTIGIOUS DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY AT WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT One hundred teens from across the nation participated in Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence magazine -- a four-day, immersive and transformational mentoring program at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida which concluded this weekend.

The 100 students were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide for this once-in-a-lifetime mentoring program that is designed to assist them in identifying and pursuing their dreams. The students, along with a parent or guardian, received an all-expensepaid trip to Disney to participate in the program, which features a series of career-oriented workshops and leadership seminars. ILLINOIS STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL INVITATIONAL TO TAKE PLACE IN CHAMPAIGN Teams from 41 high schools throughout the state will participate in the 36th annual Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) High School Mock Trial Invitational on March 24 and 25, 2018, at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign. The top eight teams will compete in the final round on March 25, for the state championship. The winner will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Each team tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA Committee.

This year’s case is Grant v Smith, a civil suit alleging the use of excessive force during an arrest. Students will assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses, and a panel of Illinois lawyers and judges, along with members of the ISBA Law Related Education Committee, will evaluate and score the students’ performances. The students must also take a written test about the issues of the case and basic legal principles.

he Garfield Park Community Council recently announced that they would be moving forward with plans to create the Garfield Park Eco Orchard in the community that would add a new variety of fresh produce to their existing neighborhood market.

At our neighborhood market, people come and say “where’s the fruit?”

We are hoping to procure fruits that are indigenous to our region so that we can have them accessible at our neighborhood market.” said Angela Taylor, wellness coordinator for the Garfield Park Community Council.

Some of the fruits that they are hoping to grow in the Garfield Park Eco Orchard are apples, pears, plums, blueberries, and the fruits that grow and are harvested within the short warm season in Chicago, according to Taylor.

The Eco Orchard will begin producing fruit in the spring of 2019, according to Taylor. There is still a lot of planning and coordinating that needs to be done to make sure that the orchard is the perfect place to grow healthy fruits.

“We are hoping to have the installation done by the end of the year.

Healthwise and thinking rationally, you can’t just take trees and plop them in because they aren’t going to survive. For trees that are fruit-bearing you need to be planting them in the spring and we haven’t done environmental studies yet for the location so we won’t be putting trees in this spring but we are hoping by fall we will be able to do an installation and get the trees acclimated and give them a lot of love and care over the winter and hope everything survives,” said Taylor.

Taylor expects to have berries, grown in the orchard, showing up at the farmers market by the spring of 2019 and apples, pears, and plums to be in the market by 2020.

The Garfield Park Eco Orchard will also help to stabilize the Youth Garden Core summer program.

Taylor said she is very excited for the opportunity to expand the neighborhood market which has been in operation for six years and is a valuable asset to the community.

grassroots community market. We don’t get vegetables from Wisconsin or Michigan, everything is grown right here in Garfield Park and I think that is breathtaking. The fact that you can grow enough food to feed a community right inside the community, yeah we do

need a grocery store, but we still have the ability to eat and eat healthy, and eat fresh fruit and food...we just have to do the work,” said Taylor.

Chicago K - 3 STEM Learning Program Lauded in Study Funded by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation CHICAGO — A Chicago non-profit is leveling

the playing field for African American and Latino students preparing for slots in the nation’s top university science and engineering programs, according to a case study prepared

by ICF, an international consulting firm, for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

The Chicago Pre-College Science and Engineering Program (ChiS&E) was one of 30 grantees from a pool of 1,110 organizations that competed for three-year (2014 – 2017) grants in the Foundation’s Family Engagement program and is one of only six featured in a series of ICF case studies that examined exemplary approaches to engaging parents in low-income communities in advancing their children’s educational achievement. The study focused on ChiS&E’s K – 3 “Little Engineers Program.”

ChiS&E challenges the commonly held views that such subjects as physics and algebra are beyond the capacity of early elementary school children and that low-income African American and Latino parents lack the knowledge to support their children in these fields.

The organization has demonstrated, according to study authors, that African American and Latino children in grades K-3 in Chicago can grasp such concepts and develop a love of STEM learning and confidence as STEM learners. Their parents, meanwhile, develop knowledge of what it takes to prepare children for successful study and careers in

STEM fields, beginning in the early grades through high school.

ChiS&E parents have become advocates for high quality-STEM education in their children’s schools. As one parent interviewed by study authors put it, “Heads up, parents, this is what your children should be learning. It you don’t have it in your schools, request it, because this is what you’re going to need in order to prepare to compete nationally and internationally.”

ChiS&E aims to increase the number of African American and Latino students with the motivation and academic preparation to complete higher education programs and pursue careers in STEM fields. Its guiding principles and activities have been developed to prepare students to obtain four-year degrees in the nation’s top university science and engineering programs. They are modeled upon those of the award-winning Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering program, founded in 1976 and led (1976-2004) by Kenneth Hill, who subsequently founded ChiS&E in 2008.

ChiS&E provides hands-on, age-appropriate STEM activities on Saturdays at the University of Illinois at Chicago for students in grades K-8, serving over 400 students annually from 80 Chicago schools. Participants are 55% African American and 45% Latino; 53% girls and 47% boys. More than 25 teachers, mainly current Chicago Public Schools (CPS) teachers, serve as instructors.

Parents must attend with their child in grades K-3 and 5, and each semester all parents

must attend a Parent Orientation and, for middle school parents, a parent/child field trip to the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Summer camps are offered for rising eighth and ninth grade students.

Weaving math, physics, chemistry, engineering, and broader learning skills through its curriculum, ChiS&E offers K-3 students a structured sequence of topics: kindergarten – Little Civil Engineer, first grade – Little Chemical Engineer, second grade – Little Electrical Engineer, and third grade – Little Mechanical Engineer.

Case study authors noted significant benefits of children and parents learning side-byside in the Saturday class sessions. Parents discovered that their children have STEM talents. Children saw that their parents valued education. Parents and children bonded as co-learners. Study authors noted that as a result of parents’ participation, they “learned the material and pedagogy ChiS&E teachers used,

making them better teachers for their child.”

The authors reported that ChiS&E “helped both parents and children understand the level of math and science students should learn at each grade level and raised parents expectations for the quality of education their children should receive at each grade level.”

The study found benefits as well for the CPS teachers who serve as program instructors. They gained knowledge and skills in STEM concepts and teaching techniques and in parent engagement that they have taken back to their CPS classrooms and schools.

ChiS&E’s emphases on starting early with STEM education and developing the capacity of public school teachers align with a report recently released by the Kapor Center for Social Impact, “The Leaky Tech Pipeline,” which states, “In reality, the tech pipeline begins early, in elementary school.” The report calls for greater equity and opportunities for underrepresented minority student in PreK – 12 education, including access to extracurricular activities, and improved teacher quality.

Lawyers file two lawsuits after prisoner commits suicide in jail

ttorneys Alan Mills and Nicole Schult of Uptown People’s Law Center, Emmanuel Andre of the Northside Transformative Law Center, and Steve Weil and Ali Chardon of Weil & Chardon LLC. recently filed two lawsuits on behalf of 27 year-old Tiffany Rusher who committed suicide while in her Sangamon County jail cell.

The lawsuits have been filed on behalf of Rusher’s mother and according to Megan Groves, director of development and communications for Uptown People’s Law Center (UPLC), lawyers are currently waiting for the lawsuit to be approved by the court.

“Tiffany was a beautiful soul with hopes for her future,” said Rusher’s mother, Kelli Andrews, the plaintiff in the two lawsuits. “She was looking forward to coming home to be with her family. We miss her every day.”

In one case, Sangamon County

jail is named as a defendant, while a second lawsuit has been filed against the Illinois Department of Corrections, Governor Bruce Rauner, and the State of Illinois.

According to Groves, Rusher’s troubles began when she had inappropriate sexual contact with

Eventually, Rusher attempted suicide, and was put on “crisis watch.” Crisis watch entails stripping a patient of all clothing and belongings, and putting them in a completely bare cell with only

Tiffany Rusher’s mother, Kelli Andrews a minor. Groves said Rusher, “was doing sex work and was hired for a party. At that party, one of the people she had sex with was not legally an adult, so she went to prison for statutory rape.”

According to a press release, Rusher began a five-year sentence at Logan Correctional Center in 2013. After she was put in solitary confinement, her mental health deteriorated to the point where she

Through a Plexiglas wall, a guard watched Rusher, with the lights on, 24 hours a day. But according to the press release, the only appropriate use of crisis watch is to protect a patient from self-harm while professionals determine what treatment the patient needs. hours since it can worsen a prisoner’s situation due to the isolation they experience. Even a mentally healthy person in solitary confinement for more than 15 days is considered torture by the United Nations, and is known among mental health experts to cause serious damage to the brain, the press release continued.

Yet Rusher was kept in crisis watch for eight months, but the UPLC argues that prison officials could have sent her to a state mental health hospital at any time, but they did not.

After several months of successful treatment, Rusher was accused of fighting at the hospital where she was arrested and sent to Sangamon County jail.

Officials at the jail knew Rusher was severely mentally ill, the UPLC alleges and had a high risk of suicide, and that she needed intensive mental health treatment. They also knew that keeping a mentally ill person in solitary confinement would worsen her condition, cause severe psychological trauma, and increase

her risk of suicide, the UPLC press release states.

After being kept in solitary confinement at Sangamon County jail for three months, Rusher was found unresponsive in her cell with a ripped piece of towel around her neck. She died 12 days later when the hospital removed life support.

Alan Mills, executive director of Uptown People’s Law Center said, “In prison, Tiffany was tortured—kept in solitary for months on end, and denied the mental health treatment she needed. In Sangamon County jail, they put her right back in solitary, again without providing the treatment she needed. First they tortured her, then they killed her.”

“It’s important to get justice for what happened to Tiffany. She was ill and she desperately needed help.

But instead of care, she got cruelty,” said Ali Chardon, of Weil & Chardon LLC. The UPLC has seven pending class Continued on page 5

First Black Female Astronaut, One Of Many Who Inspire Chicago Youth

n 1987, Mae Jemison was selected for the NASA astronaut program. Jemison grew up on the South Side of Chicago and had a background in engineering and medical research, she had also just returned from a two-year tour in the Peace Corps where she worked as a Medical Officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia, according to her biography from NASA. On Sept. 12, 1992, Jemison became the first African American woman in the world to enter outer space. On an eight-day mission on the Endeavor Jemison served as the science mission specialist and logged 190 hours, 30 minutes, and 23 seconds in space, according to NASA “My favorite memory I have is of the shuttle launching. It shakes and rattles until the solid rocket boosters come out, I remember having this huge grin on my face. About two hours after we got in orbit I looked out the window and no kidding, the first thing I saw from space was Chicago. I thought about that girl who grew up in Chicago who would have been just real cheesed up. The perspective that stuck with me is that I am as much a part of this universe as any speck of stardust,” said Jemison in a documentary created by MAKERS, a feminist media brand.

Jemison is not the only notable women

in a space science that inspires girls in Chicago. For fifteen years, The Adler Planetarium has hosted an annual Women in Space Science event to recognize trailblazing women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and inspiring young women to pursue careers in these disciplines, according to the Adler Planetarium.

“We invite approximately 250 middle school students, primarily from Chicago public schools, to come and spend the afternoon with us. They come to the planetarium and during their two hours

here they hear the honoree speak about her job, and her background, and why she chose to pursue a STEM career and why it’s an option for everyone,” said Kelly Borden, Director of Teen Programs at the Adler Planetarium.

It is important to highlight women in STEM careers because it is a field with little female representation. If young girls who enjoy science can’t find any female professionals to look up to, their passions could be lost, according to Borden.

“Something that we hear over and over again is that representation matters and it’s incredibly true. We want our young people at the Adler to see themselves in the STEM professionals that they interact with,” said Borden.

This is something that Jemison provided for the world that had never existed before, a black female astronaut the little girls could look up to.

“If you are a young girl in Chicago interested in a STEM career you are very fortunate because there is a wealth of programs that you can access and opportunities that you could have never dreamed possible,” said Borden.

action lawsuits against the Illinois Department of Corrections described as follows: Rasho v. Baldwin, a class action case filed on behalf of all Illinois prisoners with mental health issues.

According to the lawsuit, which was recently settled, Illinois punishes mental illness instead of treating it. The lawsuit also claimed what treatment Illinois does provide is grossly inadequate. According to UPLC, because Rasho was recently settled, sweeping changes in the Illinois Department of Corrections will be made as a result.

Lippert v. Baldwin, a putative class action that relates to the alleged inadequate medical treatment provided to all Illinois prisoners. Last summer, a court-appointed expert issued a 400-page report detailing the many failings of the medical care provided to prisoners.

Boyd v. Baldwin, a class action case about the overcrowded living conditions in Vienna Correctional Center, where the lawsuit alleges that men have literally been stuffed in every corner a bed can fit in according to uplcchicago.org.

Douglas v. Baldwin, a class action lawsuit challenging Illinois’ excessive use of solitary. The lawsuit alleges that Illinois locks up too many people in solitary, many for petty offenses, keeps them in solitary far too long, in conditions amounting to torture.

Holmes v. Baldwin, a class action case brought on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing prisoners in Illinois. The lawsuit alleges that Illinois fails to provide interpreters for medical appointments, religious services, disciplinary hearings, and many other vital interactions with staff. It further alleges that Illinois fails to provide hearing aids or other assistive devices to those who are hard of hearing.

Ross v. Gossett, a putative class action brought on behalf of prisoners at Menard, Illinois River, Big Muddy River, and Lawrence Correctional Centers alleging that the Orange Crush tactical team used excessive force, including physical and sexual abuse, when it conducted mass shakedowns in the spring of 2014.

Morales v. Finley, a putative class action case alleging that adults facing revocation of their parole are denied due process. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that they are not provided with a lawyer, even though they are facing imprisonment, they are left to languish for months without any hearing at all, and they are sent back to prison without the state proving that they violated their parole.

MH v. Finley, a class action case in which UPLC established that children facing incarceration because they allegedly violated the terms of their parole were denied due process. As of January, 2015, children are now provided with lawyers at the state’s expense.

Chancy v. Illinois Prisoner Review Board, a putative class action alleging that Illinois has not implemented an evidence-based risk assessment to be used in deciding whether to parole older “C Number” prisoners, in direct violation of Illinois law, according to UPLC.

Diet vs. Exercise: Which is Better for Weight Loss?

WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT: DIET OR EXERCISE? ANYONE WHO’S TRIED TO LOSE WEIGHT AND MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HAS LIKELY ASKED THIS QUESTION. Sixty-eight percent of people want to lose 10 pounds or more, according to a recent Harris Poll on behalf of Nutrisystem. March is National Nutrition Month, and a good time to get started on your goals. So, should you focus on diet, exercise or both?

When it comes to weight loss, the split should be roughly 80 percent focus on what you eat and 20 percent on exercise. The logic is simple, say experts.

“It’s all about calories in and calories out. If you’re eating less and exercising, you’re going to burn more calories,” says Courtney McCormick, corporate dietitian at Nutrisystem. “However, exercise often makes us hungrier, which is why many people who only change their exercise habits don’t see the scale move.”

To achieve a healthier lifestyle and shed weight, consider these quick tips that combine both diet and exercise.

• EAT MORE OFTEN: A 2015 study from the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that on average, people who ate six times or more daily consumed fewer calories, had a lower body mass index, and ate more nutrient-rich foods than those who didn’t eat at least six times a day. Eating smaller meals every three hours keeps you feeling full, controls blood sugar and helps boost metabolism.

• WATCH PORTIONS: American portions have become too big; and those used to dining out may consider restaurant portions to be correct, when they’re often four times as large as what’s recommended. Learning portion control is key to losing weight. When eating out, ask for a to-go box and save half for later. You can also turn to plans, like Nutrisystem, which deliver portion-controlled meals to your home.

• VEG OUT: Vegetables are low in calories, high in filling fiber and loaded with nutrients. For breakfast, add spinach to an omelet; at lunch, pile your sandwich high with fixings like tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, or use lettuce as a wrap instead of bread. During snack time, munch on carrots dipped in hummus or blend kale into a fruit smoothie.

• DRINK MORE WATER: A study found that when people drank six cups (48 ounces) of cold water, they increased their resting calorie burn by up to 50 calories each day. Another study found that dieters who drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before meals lost 36 percent more weight over three months than those who didn’t sip before sitting down to eat. So, fill up that water bottle!

• GET MOVING: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend 150 minutes of aerobic activity weekly, but research suggests that it doesn’t matter if you exercise for two-and-a-half hours straight or break it up into 10-minute chunks. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day then build up to 60 minutes when you’re ready.

Illinoisans pick ‘Blues Brothers’ as top movie SPRINGFIELD – Illinoisans have chosen

“The Blues Brothers” as the top movie in state history, embracing a film that celebrates car crashes, classic songs, Chicago landmarks and two shady characters trying desperately to do the right thing.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “A League of Their Own” came next in the online voting, which was part of the Illinois Top 200 project.

The project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the best movies, most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

More than 1,500 people voted on the top movies. Voting in the next category, top businesses, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200. com.

“I’m a big fan of all three of the top movies, so I’m thrilled by the results. More importantly,

I’m thrilled that people are taking part in a conversation about the best of Illinois history,” said Alan Lowe, executive director of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. “I hope even more people will join the conversation as Illinois celebrates its bicentennial.”

International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation are partnering to present Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, oneweekend-only, March 30 and 31 at Chicago’s historic Studebaker Theater, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Performances of Manual Cinema’s unforgettable multi-media retelling of Brooks’s life and work are Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25; $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in advance online at chicagopuppetfest.org.

No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks combines poetry, puppetry and live jazz to bring to life the story of one of Chicago’s most beloved figures. Gwendolyn Brooks was an icon, a poet laureate, and a Pulitzer Prize winner—but she was also a treasured educator and mentor to the countless writers and children who knew her as their very own “Miss Brooks.” Weaving poetry, storytelling, sound design, original live music, and striking visuals, No Blue Memories is an exploration of

Brooks’s beloved city and a story of how she navigated identity, craft, and politics over the course of one of the most remarkable careers in American literary history.

The Poetry Foundation commissioned Manual Cinema in 2016 to visually represent the life and work of Gwendolyn Brooks in a way that would be accessible for new fans and enticing for Brooks appreciators alike. The resulting production, No Blue Memories, received its world premiere in November 2017, what would have been Brooks’s hundredth year.

The 70-minute show combines intricate paper puppetry, live actors working in shadow, and an original score played live on stage. The script was co-written by Chicago poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall.

The music was commissioned from Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods, who were granted permission from the Brooks estate for the first time to write a song using Brooks’s famous poem “We Real Cool.” The production also samples many of Brooks’s most memorable poems including “Eventide,” Beverly Hills, Chicago,” “Speech to the Young, Speech to the Progress Toward,” and “Chicago Picasso.”

New biography sheds light on religious influences on iconic jazz songstress Billie Holiday

S

oulful jazz singer Billie Holiday is remembered today for her unique sound, troubled personal history, and a catalogue that includes such resonant songs as “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.” Holiday and her music were also strongly

shaped by religion, often in surprising ways. This April, Penn State University Press will release Tracy Fessenden’s Religion Around Billie Holiday, a compelling new book that examines the spiritual and religious forces that left their mark on the performer during her short but influential life.

Mixing elements of biography with the history of race and American music, Tracy Fessenden explores the multiple religious influences on Holiday’s life and sound, including her time spent as a child in a Baltimore convent, the echoes of black Southern churches in the blues she encountered in brothels, the secular riffs on ancestral faith in the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, and the Jewish songwriting culture of Tin Pan Alley. Religion Around Billie Holiday will be released on April 7th, the 103rd anniversary of Billie Holiday’s birth.

19. Fact: Any use of the name or FICTION, OSIRIS BEY©™, O. BEY, FORMERLY KNOWN AS LEROY ALLEN WILLIAMS, JUNIOR-BEY©™, ALLEN WILLIAMS, LEROY©™, LEROY A. WILLIAMS©™, and any/all derivatives thereof, with or without scienter of any person, man or woman or any others at the expense of any Rights, Liberty, Property or any Part of my Estate without full disclosure and written prior consent is strictly forbidden and chargeable to each of the users and issuers in the amount of the sum certain of one million ($1,000,000.00) dollars of lawful money of the United States not limited to any past, present or future for each instance of the said unauthorized use.

20. Fact: Use of the name or OSIRIS BEY©™, O. BEY, FORMERLY KNOWN AS LEROY ALLEN WILLIAMS, JUNIOR-BEY©™, ALLEN WILLIAMS, LEROY©™, LEROY A. WILLIAMS©™, and any/all derivative thereof on any document associated in any manner with my Estate or me, Osiris: Bey, the Living Man, the holder in due course, Secured Party, without my written prior consent is all of the evidence required for enforcement of this agreement/contract and evidence that any and all users and issuers are in full agreement and have accepted this agreement/contract under the condition and terms so stated and set forth herein and is due and payable under the terms and conditions set forth herein this agreement/contract.
