CELEBRATION FEATURES 2,300 GRADUATES The entire graduating Class of 2018 from Noble’s 17 charter public high schools across Chicago gathered downtown recently to celebrate their 98% college acceptance rate and $474 million in scholarships earned.

Graduates included 70 DREAMers being awarded scholarships, 300 students headed to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, 300 students to the University of Illinois at Chicago, and more than 100 students attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

MOST EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS REPORT HOSPITALS NOT “FULLY PREPARED” FOR DISASTERS Nine in 10 emergency physicians responding to a new poll say that in the past month, they have experienced shortages or absences of critical medicines in their emergency departments. In addition, nearly all (93 percent of 247 doctors) say their emergency departments are not “fully prepared” for patient surge capacity in the event of a natural or man-made disaster, or mass-casualty incident, with 49 percent saying they are “somewhat” prepared, according to the poll conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).

“These results demonstrate why there needs to be a much stronger focus on the medical aspects of preparedness in the Pandemic and All Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2018 [PAHPAI] that is currently being drafted,” said Paul Kivela, MD, FACEP, president of ACEP. “Hospitals and emergency medical services continue to suffer significant gaps in disaster preparedness, as well as national drug shortages for essential emergency medications. These shortages can last for months, or longer, and constitute a significant risk to patients. Emergency physicians are concerned that our system cannot even meet daily demands, let alone during a medical surge for a natural or man-made disaster.”

POLICE REMOVE MORE THAN 100 MCDONALD’S WORKERS FROM ILLINOIS STATEHOUSE More than 100 McDonald’s cooks and cashiers were physically removed by Capitol police from a protest at the Illinois statehouse recently as the Fight for $15 joined forces with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in nonviolent direct action.

Carrying signs reading “Black Workers Matter, McDonald’s” and chanting “We Believe That We Will Win,” workers in McDonald’s uniforms were carried away along with activists, clergy and community leaders following a two-hour sit-in at the governor’s office and the legislative chambers. The nonviolent direct action against systemic racism was part of a wave of Poor People’s Campaign protests that hit 35 state capitals and Washington, D.C. The Fight for $15 has built deep ties with civil rights groups and leaders over the past five years. U.S. Rep. John Lewis joined Atlanta fast-food workers on a strike line in August 2013, encouraging them to, “Keep walking, keep marching, keep talking, keep pushing.” In the summer of 2014, the NAACP passed a resolution backing the Fight for $15. In the winter of 2015, Memphis sanitation workers who participated in the 1968 strike implored a gathering of fast-food workers at Dr. King’s church in Atlanta to keep fighting for $15 and union rights; and diverse group of faith leaders have echoed the workers’ moral argument for dignity on the job.

New Bike Lanes Under LSD Solely to Discriminate Against Homeless in Uptown, Attorneys Allege CHICAGO – An amended complaint was recently filed

alleging discrimination against homeless people in the Uptown neighborhood by the city of Chicago.

Lawyers from Chicago Coalition for the Homeless, Uptown People’s Law Center, and Butler Rubin filed the complaint on behalf of the homeless residents of Uptown who took shelter under the viaducts before the construction. The encampment was destroyed by police in September to make way for bridge repair.

The city of Chicago recently painted bike lanes on the sidewalk under the Lake Shore Drive overpasses on Wilson and Lawrence Avenues. Putting bike lanes on sidewalks is against the City of Chicago’s own policies, according to lawyers for the homeless, and is known to be dangerous for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists they argue. The lawyers also allege the city is doing this specifically to prevent homeless people from taking shelter under the viaducts, which is discriminatory and in violation of the Illinois Bill of Rights for the Homeless, according to a press released issued by the attorneys.

“People riding bikes are going to die because of this change,” said Alan Mills, attorney and executive director of Uptown People’s Law Center. “The city is so keen to prevent homeless people from creating their community that they are willing to risk the lives of cyclists. This bike lane is bad for homeless people, and bad for cyclists.”

States Attorney Speaks About the Importance of Early Childhood Education Continued from page 1

recent YMCA Experience (YXP) event held at the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, 1030 W. Van Buren St., featured Cook County States Attorney, Kimberly Foxx, as a guest speaker. Foxx utilized YMCA services as a child and continues to support and acknowledge the importance of their programs in the lives of Chicago’s youth.

“I am here as a YMCA alum. I’m here as someone who has benefited from having the YMCA in my life at an early age. I am a child who grew up in concentrated poverty in one of the most notorious housing project in the country, Cabrini Green. I remember when the new city YMCA was built down the street from

my apartment complex and how excited we were to see the bright colors and the freshness of that building,” said Foxx.

After being elected on Dec. 1, 2016, Foxx became the first African American woman to lead the Cook County States Attorney’s Office which is the second largest prosecutor’s office in the country. At the YXP event, she spoke about how she campaigned differently for her position. Rather than focusing on crime, she simply spoke about her life and her own experience growing up in poverty.

“There are not very many people like me who work in the office of the Cook County States Attorney. I have more in common with the people who come through our criminal justice system than the attorneys who work with me,” said Foxx. “It was that history that I shared while running for office that was unique

because I was coming at this work from the perspective of someone that has lived those experiences.”

Recognizing what a prosecutor can and can’t accomplish is key along with recognizing that organizations like the YMCA that attempt to intervene in young people’s lives before they get to the criminal justice system is far more important than what the prosecutor can do, according to Foxx.

“There is research that demonstrates that young people who are provided the opportunity to engage in head start programming fair much better than those who do not. Getting young people involved in early childhood education is a public safety measure,” said Foxx More than just the crayon drawings that children come home with, early childhood

“The communities that invest in early childhood education fair better on public safety metrics,” said Foxx.

If the wide belief is that it is more beneficial to invest in housing incarcerated people rather than investing in early childhood education, that community is failing, according to Foxx.

“Can we imagine for a moment, how much talent and opportunity for our entire community is left behind when we don’t invest in our neighborhoods and our young people early? The miracle of me standing here as the first African American women to hold this position and as a girl of Cabrini cannot be understated,” said Foxx.

NFL Owners Use Strong Man Tactics to Deny Players 1st Amendment Rights and Appease Trump

P

resident Donald Trump is an admirer of “strong men” and dictatorships and has little regard for democracy.

Dictatorships don’t spring up overnight, they’re cultivated and marched forward in a systematic manner with a similar formula: dictators undermine society’s institutions of democracy, like constitutions, customs and mores – including the right to protest; dictators divide people and pit them against one another, using race, religion and class; dictators undermine the rule of law and disregard justice, and do it all in the name of “law and order”; dictators systematically lie to their people and have no regard for facts, science or the truth; dictators systematically attack freedom of the press; and rich oligarchs do dictators bidding – e.g., NFL owners. Many of them gave millions of dollars to Trump’s election and inauguration.

NFL owners – a gang of 32 virtually all white men - are some of the richest people in our country. Owning an NFL team

is their status symbol, football players are their playthings and, in one owner’s words, “we can’t have the inmates running the asylum.” The military is paying the NFL for the field-wide flags, the flyovers and all the military trappings surrounding every NFL game. The NFL owners are part of the inequality in this country that has reached obscene extremes, with the richest three individuals having as much wealth as 50 percent of the rest of the country combined.

Super Bowl quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem in protest of the police killings of young, unarmed African Americans. His silent, nonviolent protest was and is a first amendment right, even if NFL teams are privately owned. Now, independent of the NFL Players Union and the contract, the owners have unilaterally ruled such protests in violation of their rules and subject to heavy fines.

Trump consciously, and the NFL owners (maybe) unconsciously, are using race to divide Americans. The league is 80 percent African American. While the master of diversion is using attacks on

black athletes to pump up his white base of support for the midterms and diverting attention from his Mueller investigation problems, we must keep our focus on the indiscriminate police killing of our young black people and the issue of racial justice.

substance! America’s substance is what it stands for – including the right to protest a wrong or for what’s right!

Who is most American? Who most respects the flag? A player who kneels to protest the excessive killing of young African Americans? Or a President who disrespects African American mothers by calling their sons, sons of bitches?

Who is most American? A football player risking life and health engaged in a legal but violent sport, or President Trump illegally profiteering off his public office by having foreign diplomats and dignitaries stay at his hotels and resorts in violation of the Emoluments provision of the U.S. Constitution?

President Trump can exercise his first amendment right and call the players SOBs; the NFL owners can exercise their first amendment right and say, “we can’t let the inmates run the asylum,” but NFL players will be punished if they exercise their first amendment right by quietly kneeling in protest of police brutality and racial injustice. As one writer has mused, has the NFL added the First Amendment to its list of “banned substances”?

80 US Communities to Fight Local Hunger with Bees NEW YORK – The Honeybee Conservancy

has announced the selection of 80 community organizations from across the United States to benefit from their successful Sponsor-A-Hive program. The program provides underserved communities with bees, bee homes, supplies, and educational support to advance bee conservation and fight hunger by empowering communities to establish sustainable agricultural resources within their neighborhoods.

Bees are essential for the pollination of so much of the food Americans eat. Guillermo Fernandez, Director of The Honeybee Conservancy notes, “One in three bites of food we eat depends entirely on bees—and they are dying out. Bees inhabit the juncture where sustainability, science, and the local food movement intersect.”

The Sponsor-A-Hive Program has worked to combat this decline by creating 165 bee sanctuaries since its inception in 2015, introducing millions of pollinators to US communities. Organizations such as the

University of Montana, New Jersey’s Greater Newark Conservatory, and Washington’s Center for Self Reliance have received not only bees, beekeeping equipment, curriculum and resources, but also guidance from Honeybee Conservancy experts whose ongoing support helps organizations place and sustain bee homes to ensure their long-term success.

The 2018 Sponsor-A-Hive Program participants represent a wide variety of nonprofit community organizations, including schools, Native American tribes, nature centers, neighborhood parks, food banks, museums, and more. Strategic Wealth Partners Celebrates Ten Years of Service

T

en years ago, an economic tsunami was brewing. An overheated real estate market was cooling off and subprime mortgage defaults were piling up. Before the end of September ’08, the Dow Jones Industrial Average would plummet more than 777 points, the most in any single day in history.

A Monday morning quarterback might say 2008 was not the best year to launch a wealth management firm.

But for David Copeland and Neal Price, there was no turning back. The two partners had put everything on the line to start their own investment advisory and financial planning firm. On May 16, 2008, Strategic Wealth Partners of Deerfield, Illinois opened its doors.

Ten years later, Copeland and Price sit in a conference room at Strategic Wealth Partners offices near downtown Deerfield, sharing stories about the early days. The bond forged between the two in the trenches of financial battle is evident. Through the closed door, the hum of a busy office can be heard. A decade earlier, the firm had started with five people, 175 clients and around $450 million assets under management. Today, 30 professionals provide investment advisory services and support to approximately 600 clients* across the country. There is now a second office in Milwaukee. At more than $2.6 billion in assets under advisement*, assets have more than quintupled. Clients of the firm typically have investable assets between $2 million and $100 million.

Did the pair have misgivings during

those tumultuous months of 2008 and 2009? “Do you mean hourly or daily,” laughs Copeland. “We created business plans and financial models and then Dave would cut my financial models drastically,” says Price. “I would say, ‘that’s so draconian. That could never happen.’ But even Dave’s worst-case scenario wasn’t as bad as what happened.”

“No one could see the bottom,” adds Copeland.

THE RIGHT BUSINESS MODEL Just how the firm survived, and then thrived, in ensuing years is a fascinating study. The two North Shore area residents are quick to admit that the 2008 trial by fire was the ultimate test of their business model. They were determined to build a model in which the firm would not accept commissions. Firms that operate on commission-based fee structures can affect a manager’s objectivity and influence the advice provided to clients. They wanted Strategic Wealth Partners to offer independent, feebased advisory services and to truly embrace the concept of being a fiduciary to their clients.

“We knew that we had the opportunity to

develop something we both felt very strongly about and felt there was demand for what we wanted to build,” says Copeland. “I knew if I were a client, I would want to work with an independent advisory firm that didn’t have ties to investment banking, corporate finance, a trading desk, or to any other parts of financial services where conflicts are evident.” Price adds, “I give credit for our success to our clients. We firmly believed we were doing the right thing for our clients, and our clients validated that.”

As part of their vision to do what’s best for the client, they created a business model based on collaboration, not competition. “Unlike many large investment houses, we don’t compete against each other,” says Copeland.

“Here, everyone works together. That’s a major reason for our success.”

Copeland points out that collaboration allows his team to benefit from shared perspectives on the same topic. “Because clients work with multiple team members, they receive a more customized solution,” he notes.

PEOPLE AND COMMUNITY Ask what makes them most proud and the conversation turns towards the firm’s staff. “I’m most gratified to be part of a firm that provides good jobs for 28 people,” says Price. “I give credit for our success to our staff. There are very few firms that deliver the kind of service we do. Our highly customized approach is somewhat inefficient; it’s a lot of hard work and involves a lot of heavy lifting. Our team bends over backwards for clients every day.”

Those same staff members are also very active in their community. Strategic Wealth Partners staff volunteer for a range of civic and charitable organizations including Jewish United Fund (JUF), Jewish Council for Youth Services (JCYS), Open Heart Magic, and Froedtert Community Memorial Hospital. “We strongly encourage our team to be engaged in the community,” says Price. “That really is a core part of our success. You don’t join a board or organization because you think it’s good for business. You do it because it’s the right thing to do for the community.”

THE NEXT TEN YEARS Ten successful years have given the partners the opportunity to think about the next ten years. “We don’t expect – or want – to be a household name with a big billboard out there,” says Copeland. “We want to continue to build a solid reputation for integrity, objectivity, hands-on service and reliability. We believe this will increase our credibility in the region and attract clients to our firm.”

Today, much of Strategic Wealth Partners’ attention is focused on succession-planning and developing the firm’s next generation of leaders to serve the next generation of clients. “From day one, we set out to create something that was going to be around a lot longer than the two of us,” says Price. “It was one of the reasons we didn’t put our name on the door. We wanted to build a firm with the ability to create success for our clients and hopefully, for their kids and grandkids - long beyond the time that we’re going to be here.”

Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: By this Copyright Notice, both the juristic person and the agent of said juristic person, hereinafter jointly and severally "User," consent and agree that any use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® other than authorized use as set forth above constitutes unauthorized use, counterfeiting, of Secured Party's common-law copyrighted property, contractually binds User, renders this Copyright Notice a Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and signifies that User: (1) grants Secured Party a security interest in all of User's assets, land, and personal property, and all of User's interest in assets, land, and personal property, in the sum certain amount of $500,000.00 per each occurrence of use of the common-law-copyrighted tradename/trade-mark STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, as well as for each and every occurrence of use of any and all derivatives of, and variations in the spelling of, STEPHEN OLIVER COBB®, plus costs, plus triple damages; (2) authenticates this Security Agreement wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party, and wherein User pledges all of User's assets, land, consumer goods, farm products, inventory, equipment, money, investment property, commercial tort claims, letters of credit, letter-of-credit rights, chattel paper, instruments, deposit accounts, accounts, documents, and general intangibles, and all User's interest in all such foregoing property, now owned and hereafter acquired, now existing and hereafter arising, and wherever located, as collateral for securing User's contractual obligation in favor of Secured Party for User's unauthorized use of Secured Party's common-law-copyrighted property; (3) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of a UCC Financing Statement in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office, wherein User is debtor and Stephen Oliver Cobb ® is Secured Party; (4) consents and agrees that said UCC Financing Statement described above in paragraph "(3)'' is a continuing financing statement, and further consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any continuation statement necessary for maintaining Secured Party's perfected security interest in all of User's property and interest in property, pledged as collateral in this Security Agreement and described above in paragraph "(2)," until User's contractual obligation theretofore incurred has been fully satisfied; (5) consents and agrees with Secured Party's filing of any UCC Financing Statement, as described above in paragraphs "(3)" and "(4)," as well as the filing of any Security Agreement, as described above in paragraph "(2),'' in the UCC filing office, as well as in any county recorder's office; (6) consents and agrees that any and all such filings described in paragraphs "(4)" and "(5)" above are not, and may not be considered, bogus, and that User will not claim that any such filing is bogus; (7) waives all defenses; and (8) appoints Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default re User's contractual obligations in favor of Secured Party as set forth below under "Payment Terms" and "Default Terms," granting Secured Party full authorization and power for engaging in any and all actions on behalf of User including, but not limited by, authentication of a record on behalf of User, as Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, and User further consents and agrees that this appointment of Secured Party as Authorized Representative for User, effective upon User's default, is irrevocable and coupled with a security interest. User further consents and agrees with all of the following additional terms of Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use: Payment Terms: In accordance with fees for unauthorized use of STEPHEN OLIVER COBB® as set forth above, User hereby consents and agrees that User shall pay Secured Party all unauthorized-use fees in full within ten (10) days of the date User is sent Secured Party's invoice, hereinafter "Invoice," itemizing said fees. Default Terms: In event of non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees by User within ten (10) days of date Invoice is sent, User shall be deemed in default and: (a) all of User's property and property pledged as collateral by User, as set forth in above in paragraph "(2)," immediately becomes, i.e. is, property of Secured Party; (b) Secured Party is appointed User's Authorized Representative as set forth above in paragraph "(8)"; and (c) User consents and agrees that Secured Party may take possession of, as well as otherwise dispose of in any manner that Secured Party, in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate, including, but not limited by, sale at auction, at any time following User's default, and without further notice, any and all of User's property and interest, described above in paragraph "(2)," formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, in respect of this "Self-executing Contract/Security Agreement in Event of Unauthorized Use," that Secured Party, again in Secured Party's sole discretion, deems appropriate. Terms for Curing Default: Upon event of default, as set forth above under "Default Terms," irrespective of any and all of User's former property and interest in property, described above in paragraph "(2)," in the possession of, as well as disposed of by, Secured Party, as authorized above under "Default Terms," User may cure User's default only re the remainder of User's said former property and interest property, formerly pledged as collateral that is neither in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party within twenty (20) days of date of User's default only by payment in full. Terms of Strict Foreclosure: User's non-payment in full of all unauthorized-use fees itemized in Invoice within said twenty- (20) day period for curing default as set forth above under "Terms for Curing Default" authorizes Secured Party's immediate non-judicial strict foreclosure on any and all remaining former property and interest in property, formerly pledged as collateral by User, now property of Secured Party, which is not in the possession of, nor otherwise disposed of by, Secured Party upon expiration of said twenty- (20) day default-curing period.
