IUPUI RECEIVES $3 MILLION ENDOWMENT FROM NINA MASON PULLIAM CHARITABLE TRUST The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program at IUPUI has received a $3 million endowment from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust. The largest single grant in trust history, announced today at University Tower, will guarantee sustained financial support of the program, which benefits underresourced students.

The Nina Scholars program, which is part of IUPUI’s University College, provides nontraditional students from various backgrounds with the resources and financial support needed to complete their college education. Students participating in the program may be adults with dependents, have physical disabilities or have involvement in the public foster care system.

Former Robert Taylor Homes Resident Releases Book About Experiences

ver the weekend, Crystal LampkinsBanks released a new book, Hi’Yella: Life in the Projects, that details her experiences growing up in the Robert Taylor Homes, a low-income high-rise housing development in Bronzeville that has since been demolished.

The title of the book means a lot to Lampkins-Banks. The word hi is meant to pay homage to the high-rise buildings that made up the Robert Taylor Homes, also to serve as a simple greeting to readers.

U.S. SURGEON GENERAL TO ADDRESS NATION’S OPIOID EPIDEMIC On May 23 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in in Washington, D.C., the United States Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Jerome M. Adams, MD, MPH, will deliver the keynote address at a Solutions Forum hosted by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), addressing the nation’s growing opioid epidemic and discussing ways to combat the crisis with emergency physicians. It’s part of ACEP’s 2018 Leadership & Advocacy Conference. In the afternoon, the Solutions Forum will focus on end-of-life care issues. Experts will discuss two areas: (1) ways to promote advanced care planning and appropriate end-of-life care, such as new value-based payment models, and (2) different tools and programs for advance care planning being used in emergency departments, and related ethical considerations.

RAOUL PUSHES FOR STRONGER REVIEW OF OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTINGS State Senator Kwame Raoul (D-Chicago 13th) passed legislation recently to ensure all officerinvolved shootings are properly investigated.

Senate Bill 2378 requires every law enforcement agency in the state to develop a written policy for the internal review of officer-involved shootings that would be available by request under the Freedom of Information Act. This legislation comes after a report from the Better Government Association which found that suburban police departments were neglecting to take administrative action after officers were involved in shootings.

“I have spent years working to improve relations between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve,” Raoul said.

“Establishing trust is an essential part of that effort, and that is impossible to do if police aren’t held accountable for their actions.”

Senate Bill 2378 passed unanimously and heads to the House for consideration.

development every day. All together, hi’yella is a slang term for high yellow which is a description of her fair skin tone.

“It is kind of the old-school country slang for the description of my skin complexion which is high yellow, but my grandma would say hi’yella. I always was the lighter one on my mother’s side of the family and within my friends that lived in the projects and a lot of times I got picked on because of that,” said Lampkins-Banks.

The book chronicles the history of the Robert Taylor Homes along with LampkinsBanks’ personal journey of trauma within in the projects and self-discovery after she was able to move away from the housing development.

“I was born in 1976 into the curses of poverty and I was raised in the Robert Taylor Homes on the south side of Chicago. My parents moved from the south on a quest to create a principal income. After settling in, they started a family and were struggling to make ends meet and our living situation became a place of survival, this was our permanent residence,” said Lampkins-Banks.

Growing up, Lampkins-Banks remembers the Robert Taylor Homes as being the opposite of a diverse community and distorting her idea of normal. “[The projects] were created to have African Americans be confined to a certain statistic and a certain atmosphere, with the background of us not growing or surviving in a way that anyone else would. It wasn’t a diverse community, we didn’t have a lot of resources, we didn’t have a lot of information to help us grow and a lot of us didn’t have educations,” said LampkinsBanks.

The journey Banks took to leave the Robert Taylor Homes was not only about leaving the physical space, but also a spiritual journey that allowed her to let go of the trauma and find motivation.

“Growing up I’ve witnessed shootings, knife fights, teen pregnancy, gang banging, drug dealing, you name it,” said LampkinsBanks. “Most of the parents were single mothers and we thought, coming up as a kid, that being a single mom and having babies was normal. We thought we had time to get our lives together and go before God. I always thought you had to be older to become saved, I thought that’s what salvation was. I didn’t know that you can always depend on God like I do now.”

Austin Based Non-profit Builds Housing for Young Moms Continued from page 1

A

new construction project in Oak Park will serve as office space, housing, and play space for the young moms, children, and staff of New Moms —an Austin-based non-profit that works with young families on the south and west sides of Chicago.

“New Moms has been around for 35 years, we started in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and moved to Austin about five years ago.

We work with young moms who are 24 and under, who are pregnant or parenting and are experiencing homelessness and poverty.

Our services are focused on homes, jobs, and strong families,” said Jenna Hania, director of development and communications for New Moms.

The four-story development at 206 Chicago Ave. is on schedule for completion in early June and once opened, it will provide office space for the New Moms Oak Park team, permanent supportive housing for 18 young families, and play space for the young children that visit and occupy the building.

“Housing is something we don’t have in the suburbs so we are excited to be able to expand those services to 18 more families. We know that the impact of having stable housing is incredible, it impacts health, education, and financial stability. To have access to affordable housing gives these young families a better shot at making a life for themselves that is not so stressed by the impact of poverty in their lives,” said Hania.

New Moms currently operates 40 transitional housing units for young families at their Transformation Center in Austin. Young moms may live in the transitional housing for up to two years while they work closely with New Moms staff to develop life skills such as budgeting, maintaining a home, effective parenting, and workforce readiness.

The New Moms Oak Park team is bursting at the seams, according to Hania. They are excited to be moving to a bigger location that will allow them to better serve the young moms

and families that come to the facility.

“Currently our Oak Park team is functioning out of a rented space on the second floor of a church, so it’s not accessible to strollers and the use of the space is limited depending on the functions of the church,” said Hania. “It has been great to be able to utilize the space, but for that team to be able to move into a space that is more functional and provides more space to work and to provide educational services and to provide childcare during educational services, I

believe that in and of itself will provide a lot of freedom and a lot of opportunities to grow our suburban services.”

Offering greater accessibility to services and housing in the suburbs will make it easier for young families to transition out of poverty, according to Hania. “[The facility] is going to be 1.5 miles from our main site, and will allow us to provide a consistency of service across that border of the city and the suburbs which for some families is really helpful,” said Hania.

Why it’s so Hard for Doctors to Understand Your Pain?

e’re all human beings, but we’re not all alike.

Each person experiences pain differently, from an emotional perspective as well as a physical one, and responds to pain differently. That means that physicians like myself need to evaluate patients on an individual basis and find the best way to treat their pain.

Today, however, doctors are under pressure to limit costs and prescribe treatments based on standardized guidelines. A major gap looms between the patient’s experience of pain and the limited “one size fits all” treatment that doctors may offer.

Concerns about the opioid epidemic make the problem worse. Opioids – including heroin and fentanyl – killed more than 42,000 people in the U.S. in 2016. Four in 10 of these deaths involved prescription painkillers such as hydrocodone and oxycodone. Physicians are increasingly reluctant to prescribe opioids for pain, fearing government scrutiny or malpractice lawsuits.

Where does this leave the patient whose experience of pain is outside the norm? How can physicians in all specialties identify these patients and do our best to manage their pain, even when their needs don’t match our

expectations or experience?

Sure enough, most of the red-haired women required significantly more anesthesia before they didn’t react in response to a harmless but unpleasant electric shock.

DNA analysis shows that nearly all redheads have distinct mutations in the melanocortin-1 receptor gene, which is the likely source of the difference in pain experiences.

As a result, medical personnel may subconsciously take male complaints of pain more seriously, assuming that a man must be in severe pain if he’s complaining at all.

Many people believe that women’s pain is consistently undertreated, and often blamed on “hormones” or “nerves.” Women more commonly suffer from fibromyalgia, autoimmune diseases including lupus and inflammatory arthritis, and migraine

Recently, research has identified genetic explanations for why these conditions strike women more often than men.

More women than men had at least one prescription for opioids filled in 2016. Though women are less likely to die of opioid overdose, they may become dependent on prescription

opioids more quickly than men.

Race and ethnicity, too, can play a role in the experience of pain. The unequal treatment of pain, even cancer-related pain, among minority patients is part of the tragic legacy of racial discrimination in the U.S. In 2009, a major review article concluded that “racial and ethnic disparities in acute pain, chronic cancer pain, and palliative pain care continue to persist.”

For example, minority patients who presented to emergency departments with abdominal pain are 22 to 30 percent less likely to receive analgesic medications than white patients with similar complaints.

In spite of research showing that nonHispanic white patients show less sensitivity to pain than do black patients and patients of Hispanic ancestry, these inequities persist. The stereotype of the stoic Northern European patient may have a basis in genetics more than personality. The minority patients demonstrated a lower threshold for experiencing pain and a lower tolerance for acute pain, suggesting that they need more medication for adequate pain relief.

THE HOPE OF GENETIC RESEARCH My guess is that the next decades will bring an explosion in research illuminating the genetic mechanisms behind pain experiences.

Genetic differences can help explain why some

patients develop certain diseases while others, exposed to the same environmental factors, never do. Some patients undoubtedly are more sensitive to pain from the start than others, based on genetic factors that the medical community doesn’t yet understand.

At UCLA, where I work, the Institute for Precision Health obtains a sample of blood from nearly every surgical patient. By analyzing each patient’s genetic data, we hope to explain why patients often respond so differently after the same type of surgery, injury or illness.

Furthermore, chronic pain is associated with long-lasting changes in gene expression in the central nervous system. Simply put, the experience of pain changes a patient’s nervous system at the molecular level. These changes are linked to behavioral expressions of pain.

Emotional factors – including a history of previous traumatic stress or depression – increase the chances that a patient will become dependent on opioids after experiencing pain.

The best physicians can do in the short term is to respect what patients tell us and try to gain insight into any of our own biases that could lead us to underestimate a patient’s experience of pain.

The six-part non-scripted documentary series will be the definitive look at one of the most talked-about and controversial events in the last decade that spurred the impactful worldwide “Black Lives Matter” movement.

“Rest In Power: The Trayvon Martin Story” will be based on the book “Rest

in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin,” by Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin.

Martin was an unarmed 17-year old high school student shot and killed by a neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman, in the Florida community where they both lived. Zimmerman was acquitted on a second-degree murder charge after claiming he shot Martin in self-defense, sparking protests and outrage worldwide. The series delves deep into the heart of the story which is more than

tragic narrative about a young man’s life cut short – it’s a story about race, politics, power, money, and the criminal justice system.

Black Author Urges Women to Welcome Unconventional Love EVANSTON, IL – It has been several years since the popular

and yet controversial TV show Sister Wives captured the attention of millions of viewers by showcasing an unconventional lifestyle of one man and many women.

Acclaimed filmmaker Kat Candler serves as season three showrunner. Candler’s award-winning film “Hellion” played in competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and she was a participant at the Sundance Creative Producing Lab.
