KAZOOM FEST TO BRING MULTICULTURAL KAZOOM KIDS’ iSTORYBOOKS TO LIFE ONSTAGE KaZoom Kids Books (www.kazoomkidsbooks.com), an interactive digital publishing company dedicated to bringing greater diversity to children’s literature, recently announced KaZoom Fest, a collaboration with the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA).

HSA’s youngest theater and acting students, and some of their parents, will bring three KaZoom iStorybook titles to life as three short plays complete with theatrical performances, music, and choreography provided by Harlem School of the Arts’ theater, music and dance departments. ASSOCIATION OF BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS ANNOUNCES NEW PRESIDENT, BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS The Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC), an inclusive organization dedicated to eliminating disparities in cardiovascular diseases, has recently installed John M. Fontaine, MD, MBA, FACC, FHRS as its 17th President and Cheryl Pegus, MD, MPH as its first woman Chair of the Board of Directors.

Among other notable accomplishments, Dr. Fontaine is a Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and Director of Arrhythmia Services. He possesses an MBA in Healthcare Management and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society. n April 21, the I Am Abel Foundation (IAAF) is hosting their second annual Health and Medical Careers Citywide Conference from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also their third annual Preparing Our Successors in Medicine Student Gala at 6:30 p.m. in the Searle Conference Center on the fifth floor of the Rush University Medical Center.

The IAAF is a nonprofit organization that works to bridge socioeconomic gaps and promotes achievement among underrepresented minority youth in Chicago so that every child can have a chance to achieve their goals, according to the IAAF website.

One of the programs the IAAF offers is the medical mentoring program that connects young people with physicians and medical professional that can help them prepare for a health career.

“I’m a doctor that was born and raised in the Englewood community. My entire childhood I was dreaming of becoming a physician but honestly, mentors were not around, said LaMenta Conway, MD, MPH, founder of IAAF. “There are at least hundreds of thousands of kids who are just like me in Englewood who want to become a doctor and have no clue

how to make it happen.”

At the conference on April 21, Students will learn about medical curriculum, admission criteria for premed, nursing, and allied health, attend workshops on navigating careers in healthcare, and network with physicians and other medical professionals. There will be an opportunity to tour the anatomy lab at Rush University where medical students study the human body, according to a press release about the upcoming IAAF conference and gala.

“The day starts with a city-wide conference that targets inner city kids who are interested in careers in

medicine. We have actually expanded what that looks like to include nursing and allied health. It’s a full day conference that is free and will teach young people what they need to do to navigate this intricate pathway toward medicine. So if that is something that young people are interested in, which we are hoping that they are, they can register on our website,” said Conway.

After the conference the Preparing Our Successors in Medicine Student Gala will begin. The Gala will celebrate the students who were recently accepted into the IAAF’s competitive medical mentoring program.

“They do a very intense year that is almost like a boot camp where they are indoctrinated into the world of medicine. That evening the Gala is going to be a celebration of all of those young people,” said Conway. “We went to all kinds of schools throughout the City of Chicago and attracted some of the best and brightest and at the same time, students who haven’t had any exposure to medicine. These students will be celebrated that evening with a pinning ceremony and such.”

IEMA Highlights Role of Volunteers in Disasters SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois Emergency Management

Agency (IEMA) is highlighting ways Illinois residents can volunteer and provide critical assistance when disaster strikes.

IEMA is partnering with local emergency management agencies throughout the month of April to educate people about how they can get connected with reputable organizations and lend a helping hand with disaster preparedness and with response and recovery efforts in the aftermath of a disaster.

“Before disaster strikes, volunteers can promote personal preparedness to help people stay safe during emergencies,” said IEMA Acting Director William P. Robertson. “When disaster strikes, voluntary organizations help people in their community, region or across the country. Volunteer organizations even play a vital role in ensuring the long-term recovery of a community affected by a disaster.”

Robertson said following a disaster, many people express interest in helping those impacted by the event. He said it’s best to volunteer through a reputable disaster relief organization before disaster strikes. The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (www.nvoad.org) maintains a national database of voluntary and charitable organizations involved in a variety of activities, including emergency www.thechicagocitizen.com

More than 50 Illinois communities have established Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs). These volunteer groups work to make their communities safer, stronger and better prepared to respond to and recover from emergencies. Illinois CERT members have assisted with damage assessments, donations management, spontaneous volunteer management and in Multi-Agency Resource Centers following recent disasters in Illinois. During disasters, representatives from the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army have liaisons in IEMA’s State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) to coordinate with state agencies, mutual aid organizations and others on response and recovery efforts. In addition, other voluntary organizations are represented in the SEOC by Illinois’ Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.

Disaster volunteer opportunities vary by community. People interested in learning more volunteer opportunities can contact local voluntary organizations or their local emergency management agency.

$100,500 Worth 0f Unclaimed Property Items Available at Upcoming Auction

T

hree Lee Godie drawings, a gold national Bicentennial medal and Columbian Half Dollars to commemorate the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 held in Chicago, are among the 921 unclaimed property items which will be auctioned off live at 10 a.m. on May 12 at the Chicago Plumbers Local 130 Union Hall in Chicago.

In total, the unclaimed property items to be auctioned off are worth $100,500.

An auction preview will be held on April 19 at the James R. Thompson Center from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. to allow the public to view items before the live auction.

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs who’s hosting the auction preview said since taking office in 2015, his office has held seven unclaimed property auctions, adding auctions occur as necessary. He also revitalized the live unclaimed property auction at the Illinois State Fair in 2016, which had taken a ten-year hiatus.

“The treasurer’s office is the custodian of more than $2 billion in unclaimed property,” said Frerichs, “including lost bank accounts, insurance policy proceeds and forgotten safe deposit boxes. Items are surrendered to the treasurer’s office after private entities have tried for at least three years to locate the owner,” he added.

property, the unclaimed items are put up for auction in order to make room for incoming unclaimed property. Just as these items do not belong to us, the auction proceeds for these items also do not belong to us. Should the rightful owners or heirs come forward to claim their property, they will receive the auction proceeds attributed to their property,” he explained.

To check for unclaimed property, people can search the I-Cash database by visiting www.illinoistreasurer.gov/ICASH The treasurer’s office never charges money to reclaim cash or property.

Moreover, unclaimed property can be owed to individuals, businesses, non-profits, and units of local government, but because thousands of items are surrendered each year, Frerichs said residents should check I-Cash every six months.

The live auction will include 175 lots and auction items have been appraised by an outside vendor. Other items that will be available include five Bicentennial coin sets, a yellow gold Rolex and currency from the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

All Girls STEM School Hosts Annual Girl Power Luncheon

he Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS) recently hosted their annual Girl Power Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago. The event celebrated the accomplishments of YWLCS students and featured a panel discussion to accentuate the need for more women in government, STEM fields, and the workplace in general.

The YWLCS was founded in 1999 and is the only all-girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) charter school in Chicago. There are nearly 350 young women who attend YWLCS and the school boasts a 100 percent graduation and college acceptance rate, according to a press release from the YWLCS. “It was my goal when I came here to revitalize our mission which says that we inspire urban girls to engage in rigorous college preparatory learning in a small school environment that focuses on Science Technology and Math,” said Dr. Vanesa ScottThompson, principal of YWLCS. In the fall, YWLCS will introduce two new engineering classes, introduction to engineering and principals of engineering, that will make them a full STEM school, according to Scott-Thompson.

“I am so committed to making sure we live up to our mission and to make sure the girls have science, technology, engineering, and math because it impacts every part of our lives and if you think about it, people who are working in these fields do not look like us and they are primarily men so I’m trying to make sure we have a women’s pipeline,” said ScottThompson.

Darielle Kennedy, 2018 valedictorian of YWLCS, has been working with her mentor Tammera Holmes, president and CEO of AeroStar Corporation, all year to prepare for college.

Originally, Kennedy planned to pursue a career in aerospace engineering like Holmes, but after meeting students from different

parts of the world, she changed her passion to political science and believes in her own power to be an ambassador and an advocate for African people around the world.

Another student, Kiarra Pearson, is a junior at YWLCS and has already been working with her mentor Anne Pramaggiore, the CEO of ComEd. “Since I met Anne she has been in my ear helping me to prepare for college and trying to get me into different programs to make my

resume look really nice,” said Pearson. “I want to come out of my senior year with straight A’s so I can get as much money as I possibly can to go to college.”

Both girls are thankful for what they have learned from their mentors and the impact that YWLCS has had on their futures.

“Young Women’s has really impacted my life to be more socially aware of what goes on around me and be aware that people do look at me and see what I’m doing,” said Kennedy.
