CHICAGO JOINS NATIONAL MOVEMENT TO END PROSTATE CANCER JOLIET, IL – ZERO - The End of Prostate Cancer joins forces with Advanced Urology Associates to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this June. The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free of prostate cancer. Participants from the Chicago area will run and walk together on June 2 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 18 minutes.

Chicago joins 40+ communities across the nation as part of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series. Run/ Walk participants will receive tech shirts, free food and prizes, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer. Funds raised for this year’s Run/Walk event will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, to enhance patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. REDLINED BY CHICAGO AUTHOR LINDA GARTZ Linda Gartz’s REDLINED: A Memoir of Race, Change, and Fractured Community in 1960s Chicago was recently published on April 3. Linda Gartz is a six-time Emmy® award-honored television producer, essay writer, and native of Chicago’s West Garfield Park. In her book, Redlined, she exposes the discriminatory lending policies known as redlining, the FHA’s former nationwide practice of denying mortgages based upon race and ethnicity, in a riveting story of a Chicago community fractured by racial turmoil as experienced by one white family who lived through it. As blacks moved deeper into Chicago’s West Side during the 1960s, whites fled by the thousands.

But Linda’s parents, Fred and Lil, chose to stay in their neighborhood, even as redlining undermined property values and forced African-Americans into predatory loans.

Based on a treasure trove of letters and diaries, Redlined combines Gartz’s poignant personal experiences with those of her parents to share a unique perspective of a racially changing America in the 1960s and beyond. n April 20, Chrishon Lampley will be hosting a tasting event at the South Loop Mariano’s for Love Cork Screw wine, a private label wine company that she owns. The event will showcase the five varietals of red and white wine that the company produces. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased online.

The tasting event at the South Loop Mariano’s, 1615 S. Clark St., is part of Mariano’s Tastemaker’s event series.

“I’m a Tastemaker for Mariano’s and I was announced as that about two years ago. What that means is that I’m an influencer with a brand under Mariano’s umbrella. They do special events for Tastemakers and this is one of those events. I do a lot of tasting events for all types of stores,” said Lampley.

Aside from building her brand and doing wine tastings around Chicago and nationwide, Lampley takes time to speak with youth and young entrepreneurs because she said she wants to inspire people to pursue their dreams.

“I’m a unicorn in this industry.

Working in an industry that doesn’t look like me, that definitely speaks to the youth on a huge scale as well as young entrepreneurs and encourages them to follow their dreams and to do something that may not necessarily be what they think they can do or something they

can succeed in, but I’ve done it and I can show that to them,” said Lampley.

In May, Lampley will be featured as the keynote speaker for the Women Who ROCK Awards Gala at the Bolingbrook Golf Course on May 6.

The event will honor 22 women from around the Chicagoland area for their contributions in their communities, in education, business and entertainment.

“I love to inspire women of all colors and all nationalities to go for it. We get so much pushback and there are so many glass ceilings that we have to break through, I’m here to show that we can break through them,” said Lampley.

Lampley will also be speaking at the MADE Maven Leadership Summit, held in Chicago on April 28 and 29, about how she was able to get her Love Cork Screw products into a big box store like Target.

99-Year-Old Friend of Dr. King Shares Memories of Civil Rights in Chicago

imuel Black recently spoke at the Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in Hyde Park to honor the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. Black worked closely with King during the civil rights movement and was instrumental in orchestrating King’s first Chicago appearance in April of 1956 where he gave a moving speech at the same venue.

Even at 99-years-old, Black still has vivid memories of meeting and working with King. He talked about the first time he saw King and how he immediately connected with the movement King was leading.

Shortly after seeing King speak on television, Black traveled to Montgomery, AL, to meet him.

“I went to Montgomery and I met him and other people who had participated in his marches. From that point forward I followed Dr. King reverently because I was tired and I wasn’t the only one that was tired, there were Hyde Parkers that were tired, there we other people across the country that were tired, but we were not too tired to walk

behind this great man and I have never forgotten the power of that voice that told the world that we were tired of racism, segregation, and inequality,” said Black.

Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Birmingham, AL, Black and his family migrated to the south side of Chicago when he was eight months old. He remembers growing up in racially restrictive housing covenants which led to overcrowding and poverty in black neighborhoods.

“That experience carried me to work with Dr. King. and when he came to Chicago to bring attention to housing I was very much involved because housing had always been a factor in the north and in Chicago specifically which was the most segregated northern city in the country at the time,” said Black.

King was known for his peaceful methods of protesting and resisting racial inequalities. He encouraged all of his followers to never engage in violence no matter the circumstances. This admirable quality was something that made Black worry about King’s safety.

they didn’t know what to do when they didn’t. I always worried how long he would be safe in this social system and he was attacked, not just once. His house was burnt, he was stabbed by a woman in Harlem, so I kept always worrying that his attitude and his behavior would give someone that opportunity to

assassinate him, and that did end up happening April 4th, 1968,” said Black.

The day that King died, Black was going to visit his sick father in the hospital. He said that he was so angry and hurt to hear the news of King’s assassination. “It was a painful day,” said Black.

Brittney Austin, A Student at Roosevelt University and Resident of the West Side Receives Matthew Freeman Social Justice Award CHICAGO - Brittney Austin, a Roosevelt

University biology major and president of the Black Student Union (BSU) who organizes monthly food drives for the homeless, has received the University’s prestigious Matthew Freeman Social Justice Award.

Austin, who hopes to go to medical school after graduating from Roosevelt in May, has been involved in social justice work since the moment she arrived at the University approximately four years ago.

“Brittney has a strong passion for social, economic and environmental justice issues and her current position as BSU president has allowed her to emerge as a leader,” said Pamela Thompson-Hill, the director of Multicultural Student Support Services at Roosevelt who nominated Austin for the award.

Austin, a resident of Chicago’s West side, but who grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has always felt connected to helping others.

he Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently reported the death of a second individual who experienced severe bleeding after using synthetic cannabinoids.

Often called Spice, K2, or fake weed, IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. said cases like these are on the rise while authorities continue to monitor the situation.

“We continue to see the number of cases rise,” Dr. Shah said. “IDPH is continuing to work with local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, along with other partners, to try to identify common products,” she added in a press release.

But what exactly are synthetic cannabinoids and why are they so dangerous? Here’s responses to frequently asked questions and facts you need to know: Q: What are synthetic cannabinoids?

A: Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made mind-altering chemicals that are either sprayed on dried, shredded plant material so they can be smoked or sold as liquids to be vaporized and inhaled in e-cigarettes and other devices.

These products are also known as herbal or liquid incense. These chemicals are called cannabinoids because they are similar to chemicals found in the marijuana plant. Because of this similarity, synthetic cannabinoids are sometimes misleadingly called «synthetic marijuana» (or «fake weed»), and they are often marketed as safe, legal alternatives to that drug.

In fact, they are not safe and may affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana. Their actual effects can be unpredictable and, in some cases, more dangerous or even life-threatening.

Synthetic cannabinoids are part of a group of drugs called new psychoactive substances (NPS).

Spiceworks Study Reveals 40 Percent of Large Businesses Will Implement Intelligent Assistants or Chatbots by 2019

piceworks recently announced the results of a new survey examining the adoption and usage of intelligent assistants and AI chatbots in the workplace. The results show that within the next 12 months, 40 percent of large businesses – those with more than 500 employees – expect to implement one or more intelligent assistants or AI chatbots

on company-owned devices, compared to 25 percent of mid-size companies and 27 percent of small businesses. The findings indicate that although adoption is on the rise, some organizations are holding back due to a lack of use cases in the workplace and privacy concerns.

Black Women’s Roundtable Releases Its Fifth Annual Report

Mazda Introduces Updated 2019 CX-3 at 2018 New York International Auto Show

M

azda Motor Corporation recently introduced its updated, refined Mazda CX-3. Additionally, the Mazda KAI concept and SKYACTIV-X engine made their North American auto show debuts, highlighting Mazda’s design and engineering prowess as it moves toward its next-generation of vehicles.

In a recent speech, Mazda Motor Corporation Global Chief Marketing Officer and Mazda North American Operations CEO Masahiro Moro discussed Mazda’s commitment to the U.S. with Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc., the new plant scheduled to go online in 2021. He also introduced the updated Mazda CX-3 subcompact crossover SUV before journalists at the New York International Auto Show, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

The new CX-3’s interior has undergone significant improvements, most notably the adoption of an electronic parking brake that frees up space and allows for a significant increase in storage space. Additional improvements include a smoother, more efficient and more refined SKYACTIV-G 2.0 gasoline engine, available full-leather seating surfaces, improved NVH characteristics and redesigned seats that support a more comfortable position. Yet, Mazda CX-3 continues to possess uncommonly good driving dynamics and keenly updated design elements that complement what is already a

compelling package.

Finally, Mazda displayed the Mazda KAI concept and SKYACTIV-X engine. KAI, which means “pioneer” in Japanese, portend Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design direction, eschewing rhythm motion of the design language for cleaner lines, surface-based reflections and a “less-is-more” approach to creating a simultaneous sense of excitement and elegance. It is joined by the SKYACTIV-X engine, the world’s first commercially available gasoline compression-ignition engine. The KAI and SKYACTIV-X signal Mazda’s future design and technology directions.

Called Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030, in which Mazda is aiming

to reduce its CO2 emissions by 50 percent from 2010 levels by 2030. SKYACTIV-X will serve as a building block in that strategy, with it expected to be 20- to 30-percent more efficient than today’s SKYACTIV-G engines. It will be available in Mazda vehicles starting in 2019.

SKYACTIV-X is part of a greater initiative in line with Mazda’s “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” long-term vision for technology development. Mazda aims to use the fundamental appeal of the automobile - driving pleasure - to inspire people, enrich society and help bring about a beautiful earth.

Are you overdue for a raise or promotion?

Conversely, some people have zero problem with requesting an increase in their salary or asking for an opportunity to perform at higher level.

The federal government has banned many specific synthetic cannabinoids. Illinois has passed their own laws targeting other synthetic cannabinoids. Recent laws targeting synthetic cannabinoids have banned general categories of ingredients, rather than specific chemicals. However, makers of synthetic cannabinoids try to get around these laws by creating new products with different ingredients or by labeling them “not for human consumption.”

Q: What are some important warnings to know about synthetic cannabinoids?

A: Synthetic cannabinoids are are unsafe and IDPH urges people not to use them. They are made of different chemicals and most of the time, people don’t know what chemicals are in them. Anyone who has a reaction to synthetic cannabinoids, such as severe bleeding, should call 911 or have someone take them to the emergency department immediately.

(SOCS), an international professional organization of physicians dedicated to promoting excellence in skin of color dermatology, reports record levels of organizational growth in terms of membership, mentorship, research, educational initiatives and media outreach.

At its recent annual business meeting held in conjunction with the 2018 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, SOCS President Seemal R. Desai, MD, reviewed 2017-2018 highlights including: Professional membership has doubled since 2015, and has grown to 436 members from 29 countries around the world (up from 21 countries in 2017), with a sharp rise in membership among residents and research fellows.

The SOCS has increased engagement with medical students through the medical

school awareness program, helping them secure residencies with a year-by-year guide available on www.skinofcolorsociety.org.

SOCS has expanded its skin of color dermatology mentorship program to include a record 78 mentors from 10 countries who are available to share their expertise with dermatology residents and young dermatologists.

SOCS dermatologists participated in a successful inaugural partnership with Procter & Gamble on its Science Behind Symposium, involving mentors Lynn McKinley-Grant, MD and Susan C. The presentation will include a look at a few concrete poems and the audience will be asked to think about how what they say is made more powerful by how it is said, paying close attention to the feeling one gets when confronting the poem visually as well as the ways in which language enhances those feelings by making historical connections. Phillip B. Williams was born in Chicago. He is a Cave Canem graduate and the poetry editor of the online journal Vinyl Poetry. He is the recipient of a Whiting Award and teaches at Bennington College.

The award from Roosevelt’s Mansfield Institute for Social Justice and Transformation was presented to Austin by the Institute and Roosevelt President Ali Malekzadeh during a lecture and award ceremony held on March 12 at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

“Brittney Austin has been viewed as a leader and positive change agent from the moment she stepped into the University,” said Heather Dalmage, director of the Mansfield Institute. “I believe she will do great things in making positive change in her community in the future.”

As president of BSU, Austin has focused on leading the student organization in representing the interests and concerns of African-American students on campus by way of political, educational, social and

community initiatives.

Every third Wednesday of the month, Austin and other members of BSU package food at the University and bring it to the streets of Chicago’s South Loop in partnership with South Loop Campus Ministries.

“When it’s warmer out, we usually pack sandwiches, but recently we have been packing soups and walking around to give them to individuals experiencing homelessness within the South Loop area,” said Austin.

Besides food drives, Austin spearheaded discussions to discuss ways to alleviate food deserts on the west and south sides of Chicago. She serves as a member of the Student Committee for the American Dream Conference at Roosevelt University, and also co-hosts her own radio show, “Know Justice, Know Peace,” which airs at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at Roosevelt’s radio station, WRBC: The Blaze.
