Black Public Media celebrates 10th anniversary ofAfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange NEW YORK - Black stars and filmmakers converged on the Harlem Stage Gatehouse recently to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the acclaimed national television series AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange.

The event featured a screening of the documentary program’s season finale, Fatal Assistance, award-winning director Raoul Peck’s sobering indictment of the global aid policies that failed Haiti in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake.

The evening was hosted by actor Nicholas L. Ashe, star of the hit OWN Network series Queen Sugar and host of this season of AfroPoP, and featured a post-screening discussion led by award-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa with Hébert Peck, producer of Fatal Assistance.

Produced by Black Public Media and co-presented by distributor American Public Television (APT), AfroPoP remains the only public television series dedicated to presenting documentary films about the global Black experience. Author Puts the Focus on Two Historic Black Educators CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

By Lisette Gushiniere When it comes to women educators, Charlotte Forten Grimké and Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin stand out as distinguished Black figures in African American history.

Currently, two ebooks highlighting the live’s of both women, can now be purchased online.

Written by author L.A. Johnson, a former African American educator herself, the book, “Miss Forten of Philadelphia: Awesome Black Female Educator,” highlights the life of Charlotte Forten Grimké, the first Black teacher hired to teach white students in the public schools of Salem Massachusetts.

Forten Grimké was an African-American anti-slavery activist, poet and educator.

Born free into a wealthy and socially prominent Black family, she, as were her parents and grandparents, was active in the antislavery movement and lived to see the success of that movement when slaves living in America were emancipated, according to a description of the book listed on Amazon.com.

The book highlights her early childhood, her education, and her teaching experiences on the South Carolina Sea Islands.

From slave, to world class teacher, to namesake of a Maryland State University, Johnson’s other book entitled, “Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin: First Black Female Principal,” tells the story of Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin, the first Black female principal. Both books can be purchased on www.amazon.com.

Johnson, who retired from the Los Angeles School District with 26 years of teaching service credit, thought it was important to remember the significant achievements of educators like Forten Grimké and Jackson Coppin.

“These two women are significant role models,” she said. “Especially Fanny Coppin who overcame seemingly impossible obstacles.”

“Additionally, they paved the way for the

achievements Black Americans have been able to make today. Had it not been for Charlotte Forten’s participation in The Port Royal Experiment which led to the conclusion that Black children were not only able, but eager to learn, God only knows what may have happened,” she said.

“African American women who have made significant sacrifices and achievements for the common good, should unquestionably be remembered,” she stated.

Johnson, who earned an A.A. from Fresno City College, a B.A. from Fresno State and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Purdue University, said, “As a graduate student at Purdue University, I found that while there were numerous books written about Black male heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington Carver, etc. there was a disturbing lack of books written about our Black female heroes.”

Hence, Johnson added, she was, “motivated to fill that void.” Both books, “Miss Forten of Philadelphia: Awesome Black Female Educator,” and “Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin: First Black Female Principal,” respectively, comprise book 1 and 2 in Johnson’s Forget Me Not Series. She is currently working on a third book for the series.

She said most of her research was done while still a student at Purdue. “I still have the interlibrary loan requests, many of which were returned unfilled,” she added.

“But relying on books and magazine articles that I was able to obtain, I began the process of writing. My work was put on hold when I began teaching,” she said, “But, after I retired, I revived my interest and returned to my unfinished project.”

Johnson, a self-published author, added the process of self-publishing is creating additional opportunities for more writers, thus more stories are being told. “If you have a story to tell and no money or influence, there are avenues available to put your story in print and share it with anyone willing to read it,” she said.

Social media users and intensely partisan news broadcasts disseminated a massive number of messages during the campaign. Many of these messages Erik C. Here’s what we learned.

Our research questions The survey had 1,600 respondents. We focus our analysis on the 2016 electoral behavior of 585 respondents who had voted for Barack Obama in 2012. This strategic subset of voters was selected for two reasons.

First, restricting our analysis to former Obama supporters allowed us to weed out those respondents who were hostile to all Democratic candidates.

Second, if Hillary Clinton had retained the support of Obama voters, she would have most likely won the 2016 election.

show that 10 percent of these former Obama voters cast ballots for Trump in 2016, 4 percent switched to minor parties and 8 percent did not vote.

Our key research question is: What accounts for these defections?

Study methodology and results Our survey asked 281 questions, including three false statements best characterized as fake news – two negative statements about Hillary Clinton and one positive statement about Donald Trump. All three were widely disseminated through social media and spread by mainstream and partisan news outlets.

The first is that “Hillary Clinton is in very poor health due to a serious illness.” Twenty-five percent of all survey respondents believed that this was “definitely true” or “probably true,” as did 12 percent of our former Obama supporters.

The second is a statement that asked our respondents if they believed that “During her time as U.S. secretary of state, Hillary Clinton approved weapon sales to Islamic jihadists, including ISIS.” Thirty-five percent of our national sample believed that Clinton had sold weapons to the Islamic State, as did 20 percent of former Obama voters. advertising@cstweekly.com

Finally, the third is a statement that “Pope Francis endorsed Donald Trump for president prior to the election.” About 10 percent of our national sample and 8 percent of Obama supporters thought this statement was true.

Belief in these fake news stories is very strongly linked to defection from the Democratic ticket by 2012 Obama voters.

Among respondents who didn’t believe any of the fake news stories, 89 percent cast ballots for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Sixty-one percent of those who believed one fake news item voted for Clinton. But only 17 percent of those who believed two or all three of these false assertions voted for Clinton.

To be sure, data from a one-time survey cannot “prove” that these fake news items caused former Obama voters to defect. It is also possible that someone who chose not to vote for Clinton might endorse these false statements after the fact in order to rationalize their voting decision.

We also explored a number of other possible explanations for these voters’ defections.

What else could explain these defections?

an attempt to mobilize female voters. Could this have alienated men to the extent that they abandoned their prior support for the Democratic presidential candidate? Our data provide no support for such a claim. An identical 23 percent of both male and female respondents who had voted for Obama in 2012 defected from the Democratic ticket.

Did the lack of an African-American presidential candidate lead black voters to waiver in their commitment to the Democratic candidate? No. Indeed, fewer African-American voters (20 percent) defected from Clinton than did white voters (23 percent).

Age is weakly related to defection from Clinton. While 20 percent of voters over 35 abandoned the Democratic ticket in 2016, 30 percent of younger voters did so.

Education is also weakly associated with defection. Among college-educated former Obama voters, just 16 percent did not vote for Clinton, but the percentage almost doubled to 27 percent defecting for those with lower educational attainment.

More overtly political variables had a stronger impact. Half of those who placed themselves near the conservative end of the ideological scale defected from the Democratic candidate, while CONTINUED TO PAGE 6

briefly Black HIV Infections Cut Almost In Half In Illinois SPRINGFIELD – From 2000 to 2015, the rate of HIV infection among blacks decreased by 46 percent. However, as new HIV infections in Illinois plateaued in 2015, for every 100,000 black people in the state, 40 were still diagnosed with HIV (compared to 3.6 per 100,000 among whites) and more troubling, among young black gay men. Of the 224 deaths from HIV/AIDS in Illinois in 2015, 140 were among blacks.

“While we have made great strides in reducing HIV infection in Illinois, African Americans continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Echoing this year’s theme, ‘Stay the Course, the Fight is Not Over!’ Illinois will continue working with communities around the state to eliminate these disparities and encourage people to get educated, get involved, get tested, and get treated.”

Senate Black Caucus Say The ‘Bruce Rauner Experiment’ has failed Members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, calling the governor’s budget address a ‘Valentine’s Day Massacre’ gathered across from his office recently after he delivered his fourth round of budget cuts to programs and services that severely affect the black community.

Assistant Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford (D-Maywood), who also chairs the joint Illinois Legislative Black Caucus remarked, “The governor’s speech today

was disingenuous,” Lightford said. “His pension cost shift offsets the investment in education he says he’s making, which would put districts who cannot afford the cost shift further away from adequate funding. That does not increase the quality of education for our children.”

Education was not the only part of his budget that took a financial hit, human services took a hit as well.

“Governor Rauner introduced a plan to devastate Illinois’ most vulnerable residents by slashing programs that are necessary to end the cycle of poverty and help low-income families succeed,” said Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D- Chicago).

“His cuts to After School Matters and Teen Reach would be dangerous for young people who might otherwise be on the streets.”

While the Caucus has continued working with business leaders and community stakeholders to find ways to spark job creation, in a press release, members say they were disheartened to find the governor didn’t mention ways to address the growing number of jobless youth in the state.

“One of my biggest frustrations is that the governor walked away from that speech without having a plan to address unemployment across the African American community,” Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) said. “The people of this state cannot get the governor to layout a realistic blueprint for a budget— today was no different, we had more tricks and more games.”

only 14 percent of those on the left did so.

Similarly, dissatisfaction with the condition of the economy also had an impact: Just 12 percent of those who thought that the economic situation at the time of the survey was “good” or “very good” abandoned Hillary Clinton, while 39 percent who regarded the economy as “poor” or “very poor” at the time of the survey defected from the Democratic ticket.

Party identification exerted a stronger influence. Among the former Obama voters who identified themselves as Democrats, 7 percent did not vote for Clinton. This rose to 40 percent among independents and to 68 percent among those who identified with the Republican, Libertarian or Green parties.

Controlling for alternative explanations So do all of these alternative factors mean it’s impossible to measure the unique impact of belief in fake news on the vote in 2016? Actually social science offers us a way. Multiple regression analysis is a tool that allows researchers to account for many different factors influencing behavior, in this case defecting from the Democratic ticket in 2016.

We used this tool to estimate the joint impact on the vote of all of these alternative explanatory factors. The first equation we ran included gender, race, age, education, ideological orientation, dissatisfaction with the condition of the economy and party identification. All together, these variables “explained” 38 percent of the likelihood of defection.

We then added the fake news items to the equation to measure their impact. The three fake news items explained an additional 14 percent of the likelihood of Obama voters defecting after the influence of all of the other variables had been taken into consideration.

We also added one more compelling element to our study. Using “feeling thermometers,” we measured how much each respondent liked or disliked Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. If defection of Obama voters was only due to disliking Hillary Clinton or liking Donald Trump, then the introduction of this thermometer variable into the equation should make the link with fake news disappear.

Though how people felt about Clinton and Trump did somewhat reduce the strength of the relationship between fake news and defection, it did not eliminate it. Belief in fake news remained a significant predictor of defecting from

Clinton. In sum, even after the impact of all of these other factors is taken into consideration, former Obama voters who believed one or more of these fake news stories were 3.3 times more likely to defect from the Democratic ticket in 2016 than those who did not believe any of these false claims.

That may not seem like much, but Clinton lost the presidency by about 78,000 votes (0.6 percent of nationwide vote) cast in the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Though our evidence does not “prove” that belief in fake news “caused” these former Obama voters to defect from the Democratic candidate in 2016, our study results suggest that it is highly likely that the pernicious pollution of our political discourse by fake news was sufficient to influence the outcome of what was a very close election.

The Village of Dolton recently hosted a Community Wellness Day to provide residents with free health screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, one-on-one pharmacy consultations, and wellness activities.

This is the beginning of many free health events in Dolton, according to the Mayor of the Village of Dolton, Riley Rogers.

“We have an aging population in the City of Dolton and what we want to do is assist these residents, who in some cases can't afford healthcare, through trying to lead them in the right direction in regards to making sure they get regular checkups. So, today we thought we could start the year off with the wellness program and we want to continue this throughout the year and future years to come,” said Rogers.

There were several vendors who set up tables at Community Wellness Day to provide information about free and affordable healthcare for all ages, not just seniors.

“We reached out to a number of vendors that said they had no problem with participating.

This is just a smaller fashion of what we are planning to do in the future. We are looking for those vendors that will provide these services at no cost to our residents,” said Rogers.

ST Medical Group was one of the vendors at Community Wellness Day. Jadwiga Stoklosa ran the table where attendees could sit and have their health questions answered by medical

professionals and participate in an overall wellness screening.

“If you come to our table and we screen you and the results come right away. We check blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and we check mental status,” said Stoklosa. “Then we make recommendations. We send some people home, sometimes they need a home health agency, sometimes they need to go to the hospital, sometimes we will tell them to go see a primary care physician once a month.”

Aside from the free health screenings, Community Wellness Day offered residents the chance to get out of the house and socialize during the cold winter months. Earlene Branch, a resident of Dolton, believes the opportunity to get out of the house and socialize is just as important as the free health screenings.

“I am so thankful that they are doing this because I see so many people that are obese and people who sit around in their house all the time and don’t go out to mingle with others and that leads to other illnesses, so I think this is a very good health event and I think they should do this more,” said Branch.

Mayor Rogers was walking around at the event because he believes in the importance of keeping the community healthy, but also values engaging with his constituents. “it’s important to maintain a dialogue with our residents,” he said.

South Suburban College has put together a free Woman’s History Month performance of The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman staring Cynthia Maddox. The performance will take place on March 1st at 11 a.m. in the Kindig Performing Arts Center, 15800 S. State St., South Holland.

Patrice Burton, dean of student services at South Suburban College (SSC), was involved with planning the event. The performance will provide the historical story of Harriet Tubman and showcase the many roles she played during the American Civil War, according to Burton, “If we look at it from what she accomplished at the time she was a true ‘shero'. Not a hero a ‘shero' because a lot of people don't realize what all she did. Most people just know about Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad and that’s it, but she was so much more,” said Burton.

Maddox is a Chicago actress, director, vocalist, playwright, and producer who has performed all over the Midwest and Canada. For thirty years Maddox has been portraying a wide range of African American ‘sheroes’ in her performances, according to South Suburban College.

Burton booked Maddox to come and give her Harriet Tubman performance because she believed her one-woman act was enlightening and would benefit the students and community.

“All we wanted to do was chose a strong woman and I think both black, white, and latino people can get from this women a source of strength because she was an abolitionist, she was a humanitarian, she was an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War, she was an educator and regardless of her color I think that we as Americans need to know about as many ‘sheroes' as we can,” said Burton.

The upcoming performance is free and open to the public.
