FEDERAL COMMISSION ON SCHOOL SAFETY RELEASES COMPREHENSIVE RESOURCE GUIDE FOR KEEPING STUDENTS, TEACHERS SAFE AT SCHOOL After months of research, visiting successful programs around the nation, and receiving testimony from experts and concerned citizens, the Federal Commission on School Safety (Commission) recently released a 177-page report detailing 93 best practices and policy recommendations for improving safety at schools across the country.

Utilizing the information gathered, the Commission report offers a holistic approach to improving school safety, ranging from supporting the social and emotional well-being of students to enhancing physical building security. Acknowledging there can be no one-size-fits-all solution to this complex problem, the final report serves as a resource guide for families, educators, law enforcement officers, health professionals, and elected leaders to use as they consider the best ways to prevent, mitigate, and recover from acts of violence in schools. The recommendations are based on efforts that are already working in states and local communities.

SLEEPING IN CONTACT LENSES PUTS YOU AT RISK OF DANGEROUS INFECTION Contact lenses are worn by an estimated 45 million Americans. Six tales that should serve as warnings are the latest in a series on infections featured in the January issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine and developed through a partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the EMERGEncy ID Net, an emergency department-based collaborative surveillance network. The CDC reports that an estimated 1 million annual outpatient and emergency visits were due to keratitis.

GOVERNOR SIGNS BILL CREATING SCHOOL DESIGN-BUILD PILOT PROGRAM Gov. Bruce Rauner recently signed HB 5593 establishing a pilot program for school districts to use the design-build construction delivery method.

The method allows architects, engineers and construction contractors to pick their partners and be hired as a team, expediting project completion by allowing early phases of construction to begin as the building design is still being developed. The legislation permits up to five design-build demonstration projects to be undertaken in Illinois. Each must be shown to be in a school district’s best interest as determined by the State Board of Education. “The State has proven the benefit of using the design-build method on vertical infrastructure projects,” Rauner said, “and by piloting this valuable delivery method tool in the K-12 system, it will help to explore ways to increase efficiency and speed in school construction projects.”

“As a state, we are always looking for better tools to enable Illinois public entities to construct and renovate buildings more effectively and cost-efficiently,” said state Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City. “Design-build has proven in national studies to deliver the lowest cost, fastest schedule and highest quality. As Representative, I will look to work with local officials to implement this important cost savings tool.”

Following a nationwide search, Advocate South Suburban and Advocate Trinity Hospitals have recently named Rashard Johnson, a young African American man originally from South Florida, as their new president.

Johnson has a high level of experience in overseeing multi-facility health networks and a strong passion for patient care.

“As the president of South Suburban and Trinity Hospitals, I’m responsible for directing all daily patient care and activities as well as ensuring the strategic vision and implementing our safety and quality goals. I am also responsible for ensuring patient satisfaction and doing it all in a cost-effective manner,” said Johnson.

Originally from Miami, Johnson holds a masters degree in health administration from the University of Central Florida. After

college, he worked in several health networks in and around Miami before moving to Dallas where he was responsible for two hospitals and 16 hospital-based clinics. After working in Dallas, Johnson was recruited to take a position overseeing three hospitals in Houston. After all of that, Johnson made his way to Chicago to begin his role as the new president of Advocate South Suburban and Advocate Trinity Hospitals.

“For my entire career, I have always had multi-site operations so that was a big draw for me in coming to Advocate. I am happy to have the opportunity to continue to manage multi-site operations,” he said.

As for his style of operating, Johnson said that he is very hands-on and doesn’t like to spend time in his office.

“The best way to learn your operation and to learn the quality of care that you deliver is to get out and about. I spend a lot of my time rounding on floors, meet-

ing with team members, talking to guests and patients as well as physicians in their settings and that’s a typical day for me,” said Johnson.

Aside from the work he does within the hospital, it is very important to Johnson to find ways to give back to the communities he is serving and to help increase exposure to health careers for inner-city youth.

“Growing up, I never knew that this opportunity existed. I was born and raised in Miami and never had an opportunity to be exposed to executives and in particular to health care executives,” said Johnson. “I consider it a true blessing for me to have an opportunity to be at the platform that I’m at and to have been given opportunities for doors to be opened immediately out of school at a young age and essentially that means that one of my passions is to open up doors for those who are in the shoes that I once stood in.”

South Suburban Nonprofit Supplies Food, Shelter and Clothing to 27 Communities

Together We Cope is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Tinley Park that serves 27 communities across Chicago’s Southland. The organization operates a food pantry and resale shop to assist south suburban residents along with providing counseling and referrals to empower residents and help them to maintain their independence.

“Together We Cope is a prevention agency and we try to intervene before people become homeless by providing rent, mortgage, and utility payments, food, clothing, and shelter. We try to help people by looking at their budget, by perhaps giving them food so they can save a little money there, we make sure that they are signed up to receive a LINK card if they are eligible, and just take a look at the overall situation and see what we can do to step in,” said Kathryn Straniero, executive director of Together We Cope.

There are 27 south suburban communities that Together We Cope specifically targets to provide assistance to and they are in Alsip, Blue Island, Bridgeview, Chicago Ridge, Country Club Hills, Crestwood, Evergreen Park, Garden Homes, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Hickory Hills, Hometown, Homewood, Markham, Merrionette Park,

The food bank that Together We Cope operates, located on 17010 S. Oak Park Ave. in Tinley Park, is open to the public and part of the Greater Chicago Food Depository network. Through the food pantry, the organization is able to assist more than 1,400 families each month.

“The food party is really the heart of our organization because we are open to distribute food five days a week and we have between 65 and 100 fam-

ilies a day coming to the food pantry,” said Straniero. “There is a lot of food that goes in and out of Together We Cope.”

Because the food pantry is part of the Greater Chicago Food Depository anyone is eligible to receive food from Together We Cope. If a person is out of the organization's service area, they will still be able to receive food on their initial visit, but will also receive information on what food pantries are closer to where they currently live.

Straniero said they will, “never refuse anybody food.”

Another significant element of Together We Cope is the thrift

shop that they operate, NU2U Resale Shop, which is also located on 17010 S. Oak Park Ave. in Tinley Park. Nu2u Resale Shop receives donations daily and has a wide range of clothing for men, women, and children, toys, books, antiques, collectibles, jewelry, and furniture.

“The Resale Shop is so much fun. The majority of our volunteers are in the food pantry and the resale shop and they are wonderful. It practically runs itself and it’s a wonderful conduit for donations to come in for our clients and our clients are allowed to shop over there with a voucher that we give them,” said Straniero.

Walmart Gives More Than $22 Million to Chicagoland Charities As part of their mission to use their strengths to make a difference, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation recently announced they have donated more than $22 million in cash and in-kind contributions to non-profit organizations throughout Chicagoland during FY18. This amount is part of the more than $36.9 million donated to nonprofits statewide.

These donations support Chicago area programs focused on workforce development, disaster preparedness, healthy eating and hunger relief.

by Six Year Old in Hospital, is Available Now on Amazon Little Byron had a month-long stay at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois when he was just six years old. As a way to pass the time, Byron channeled his passion for geography and created a fun game to share with other children. Continent Race is an exciting and interactive board game that helps children learn the continents, countries, and flags of the world and keeps players of all ages engaged.

Continent Race also fosters social interaction skills and boosts self-confidence. The object of

the game is to be the player who collects the most country flag cards from each continent first. Specialty cards and color-coded maps add to the excitement.

First launched on a Kickstarter campaign, which raised 212 percent of its goal, Continent Race is now available on Amazon. WASHINGTON – The Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the U.S. Small Business Administration recently issued the report Financing their Future: Veteran Entrepreneurs and Capital Access.

The report provides a comprehensive look at the state of entrepreneurship for military veterans, while presenting new small business credit data from the Federal Reserve Banks’ 2017 Small Business Credit Survey (SBCS).

“Clearly, aspiring veteran entrepreneurs can benefit from preparation and training to start their businesses and succeed in the marketplace,” said Larry Stubblefield, Associate Administrator of the SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development. “This report highlights the value of SBA-partnered resources like the Boots to Business entrepreneurship training program, which helps veterans as they navigate the challenges in financing, starting and growing their companies.”

“To solve a problem, it’s critical first to understand its scope. This report presents the most substantial evidence to date of the challenges veteranowned businesses face in accessing capital,” said Claire Kramer Mills, New York Fed assistant vice president. “By understanding how much credit veteran-owned businesses are seeking, where they’re applying, and the nature of their financing challenges, policy makers and service providers can better help veterans overcome financing shortfalls.”

The report found that: • Despite similar demand for financing, veteran-owned small business applicants were more likely than non-veteran-owned small business applicants to experience “financing shortfalls,” where they received less than the amount of credit they sought.

• They have lower approval rates at the most popular lenders, and the amount of SBA-guaranteed loans they have received has increased more slowly over time than for non-veterans.

• This discrepancy in financing experiences could be attributable to the smaller loan amounts that veteran-owned businesses seek, higher credit risk, and lack of information.

South Suburban College Opens New Art Exhibit Feature Mexican-Born Artist

The Art and Design Department of South Suburban College recently opened an art exhibition that features the artworks of Fermin Barbosa. The exhibit, called Un Paseo Por El Mercado, is on display on campus in the Lee E. Dulgar Gallery from now until Jan. 23.

The faculty of the Art and Design Department at South Suburban College works to help students become outstanding artists or designers, but their work doesn’t stop with the students. The Art and Design Department host many public exhibits at the college including Un Paseo Por el Mercado.

Fermin Barbosa is a mixed media artist and a resident of Kankakee, IL, and was born in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico on Sept. 22, 1993, according to his biography on ferminbarbosa.com.

Barbosa describes his artwork as depicting a clear balance between geometric and natural shapes, colors, and themes. Within his artworks, Barbosa utilizes his knowledge of formal practice while still allowing for spontaneous and uninterrupted artistic expression.

Much of the work that can be viewed during this exhibit at South Suburban College is inspired by the toughness of urban environments and balanced by the

contrasting representation of more earthly and organic forms and colors. Barbosa is also known for pulling from other styles of design, like fashion, and art history when creating his pieces.

As a mixed media artists, Barbosa’s work incorporates a wide variety of methods and materials that could include painting, collaging, assemblage and even basic drawing. Fermin Barbosa admires the contrasting beauty between concrete and organic elements, according to his biography on ferminbarbosa.com.

The exhibit is open to the public along with the upcoming artist’s reception, both are free experiences. The Lee E. Dulgar Gallery is on the 1st Floor of South Suburban Colleges Main Campus, 15800 State St. in South Holland.

The galleries at South Suburban College are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and for the holiday season from December 21st through January 1, 2019.

Rainbow PUSH Presents Special Tribute To the Life and Legacy of Nancy Wilson The Rainbow PUSH Coalition recently presented a special musical tribute to the life and legacy of the iconic, three-time Grammy-winning singer and freedom fighter, Nancy Wilson.

The tribute was held on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Rainbow PUSH Coalition’s National Headquarters located on 930 E. 50th Street in Chicago. Wilson died on Thursday, December 13 at her home in Pioneertown, Calif. She was 81.

“There will never be another Nancy Wilson,” said Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “A woman of song, style and substance, she was perhaps the preeminent artist of her day,” he said.

International vocalist and actress, Joan Collaso, performed Wilson’s music and Rev. Jackson reflected on Ms. Wilson’s life-long commitment to the struggle for racial, social and economic justice.

Wilson was an early and strong supporter of Rev. Jackson and the civil rights movement in Chicago from Operation Breadbasket to Operation PUSH to today. Now known as the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Operation PUSH was founded on Christmas Day, 1971.

Whenever she was in Chicago to perform, Wilson made sure to attend PUSH’s regular Saturday morning community meeting. To help raise money for PUSH and the Civil Rights Movement, she performed year after year at the immensely popular business and cultural event founded by Rev. Jackson, Black Expo.

“She was a magnificent singer and an even better person, committed to civil and human rights around the world,” Rev. Jackson said. “She was a person of infinite grace and sophistication. She sang for us. She marched with us. She stood with us in support of Dr. King. She will live for as long as we remember her and her beautiful music. We will never stop listening to Nancy Wilson.”

10 DoctorRecommended New Year’s Resolutions (StatePoint) With the new year upon us, you may be looking for resolutions that will help to keep you and your loved ones healthy and happy in the year ahead.

1. Learn your risk for type 2 dia-
