CITGO AWARDS 20 STUDENTS THROUGH INNOVATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM CITGO Petroleum Corporation recently presented twenty scholarships to the recipients of its inaugural CITGO Innovation Scholarship Program, an initiative within the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline. Each student will receive a $2,000 scholarship for undergraduate study. The awards may be renewed for up to three additional years, or until undergraduate studies are completed.

Each recipient was selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience, an essay, unusual personal or family circumstances, and an outside appraisal. Of the 20 recipients, 16 are the first in their family to attend college.

CHARITABLE DONATION HELPS SUPPORT EFFORTS TO SERVE 180,000 MEALS IN 5 AMERICAN CITIES The Alliance for Physical Therapy Quality and Innovation (APTQI) recently announced its support for Rise Against Hunger, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending hunger by 2030, by donating $25,000 to help feed Americans in need. The donation will be used to support one of Rise Against Hunger’s signature Meal Packaging Events in 5 cities. “As advocates for good health and wellness, we are proud to help address hunger, an issue that impacts individuals and families across the globe,” said Nick Patel, executive director of APTQI. “The APTQI is proud to support Rise Against Hunger’s Meal Packaging Events to continue our commitment to charitable giving.”

Rise Against Hunger operates meal packaging locations in 25 cities throughout the U.S. and five international locations in South Africa, Malaysia, the Philippines, Italy and India. In the past year, more than 398,000 volunteers from corporations, churches, schools and civic organizations packaged Rise Against Hunger meals.

TAX REFORM LAW MAKES CHANGES TO EMPLOYEE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RULES The IRS is reminding employers that last year’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made changes to several programs that can affect an employer’s bottom line and its employees’ deductions. This includes employee achievement awards.

Under previous law, employers could deduct the cost of certain employee achievement awards. Deductible awards were excludible from employee income. Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, there is now a prohibition on cash, gift cards and other non-tangible personal property as employee achievement awards. Special rules allow an employee to exclude certain achievement awards from their wages if the awards are tangible personal property. The new law clarifies that tangible personal property doesn’t include cash, cash equivalents, gift cards, gift coupons, certain gift certificates, tickets to theater or sporting events, vacations, meals, lodging, stocks, bonds, securities, and other similar items.

Redeveloped Lincoln Mall will not include big box stores Continued from page 1

If you’re looking to shop at big box stores like Walmart, you won’t find them at the redeveloped Lincoln Mall in south suburban Matteson once it opens in 2019.

Instead, the 60-acre Market Square Crossing development will have boutique-style stores occupying 160,000 square feet set aside for retail tenants, according to Keith Lord, president of Chicago-based The Lord Companies LLC, which is the project’s developer.

“I envision 50 to 60 retail tenants at Market Square Crossing and we want community-oriented retail that will appeal to residents,” said Lord. “Big box stores are having trouble all across the United States so for now, we’re not going to go down that road.”

The mixed-use project will include nearly 600 housing units (townhomes and condominiums) built into four-story buildings with commercial use at the ground level. The redevelopment plan will also include an entertainment and sports venue and 30 acres of green space.

Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin said the ‘shovel ready’ project will cost an estimated

$250 million to $300 million to complete and will serve as a national model for other mixeduse projects around the world.

“Construction is already underway at Market Square Crossing. [This project] will provide upscale, housing units and will bolster the viability of not only Matteson, but also the southland region,” Chalmers-Currin said. “We know that retail will never be the same as it was years ago.

Retail has changed, so we have to change too.”

The Lincoln Mall site is located along Lincoln Highway and Cicero Avenue and near Interstate 57, which makes it an ideal spot to attract those who live and work in the area, added Chalmers-Currin.

Matteson has a population of 20,000 and U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL), whose district includes Matteson where she also lives, joined Chalmers-Currin at a Dec. 17 news conference to announce the project.

“It’s good to share positive news about the southland and this project is great news,” said Kelly. “As a former employee of the village of Matteson, I know how hard President Chalmers-Currin and her staff had to work to bring this project to fruition and for that I say thank you.”

Other developments underway in Matteson include a Pete’s Fresh Market that’s set to open

in 2019; a 75-unit, assisted living facility for seniors; 306 new homes at the Brookmere complex; and a Sam’s Fulfillment Center, which replaced the shuttered Sam’s Club store.

One business Chalmers-Currin said she is not opposed to bringing to Matteson is a casino.

“Too much money from Illinois is being spent in Indiana because of the casinos there,” said Chalmers-Currin. “I think ultimately, a casino will come to this area even if it’s not in Matteson.”

In 2015, Lincoln Mall closed after years of serving as a ‘cash cow’ for Matteson and now the village is regaining its reputation as a great place to do business, said newly elected state Rep. Debbie Myers-Martin (D-38th Dist).

“Matteson is now an example of how municipalities should monitor and adapt to the ever changing consumer shopping trends,” said Myers-Martin. “ I am impressed by the focus, planning and actions of President Chalmers-Currin and her administration. This is an exciting time for us here in southern Cook County.”

At the end of the day, Chalmers-Currin, a wife and mother, said Matteson is on the rise.

“Matteson is a good place to raise children,” she said. “It is a place where you can live, shop and work.”

District 148 adds high-tech system to enhance existing safeguards RIVERDALE – Dolton West School District 148 is adding a new comprehensive, high-tech system to further protect students and staff when emergencies arise.

At its Nov. 27, 2018 meeting, the Board of Education approved a Seconds Matter Safety Solutions proposal.

The state-of-the-art BluePoint Life Safety Response Platform will enhance the District’s existing safety measures, accelerate response time and communication in emergency situations.

District 148 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin J. Nohelty said plans for the BluePoint Life Safety Response Platform have

been in the works for months and the Board’s decision enables the District to swiftly launch the new system.

“Our top priority is to continue to protect our students and staff.

Ongoing training and drills, crisis plans, school resource officers and security systems help to keep students safe while they are in our care. Advances in technology now allow us to supplement existing practices and procedures with an advanced layer of protection,” Dr. Nohelty said.

“The BluePoint Life Safety Response Platform, in conjunction with Amber Box Shooter Detection System, provides a multifacet-

ed system of response that is unlike any other on the market,” said Seconds Matter Safety Solutions President Milos Klipic. “In the event of an emergency, the most impressive and unique feature of the system is immediate, direct communication between first responders and building occupants.”

Susana Mendoza Addresses City Club of Chicago Susana Mendoza, a candidate for mayor of Chicago, recently addressed the City Club of Chicago, laying out her vision to shape the city for the next generation and put Chicago’s neighborhoods first.

During the speech, Mendoza unveiled her 50NEW Initiative to rebuild public schools as strong academic centers and hubs of community activity that will also help address violence in Chicago’s neighborhoods.

50NEW is a comprehensive plan that would use extra space in existing neighborhood schools to offer daycare, supper for students, family services, job training, and more. Instead of closing schools, 50NEW would help transform them into community hubs where Chicago families can access a quality public education alongside the support services they need to thrive.

NEWS Harvey Alderman Proposes Lower Water Bills, Creates Water Bill of Rights After years of higher water bills, Harvey, Illinois residents may finally have help.

The Harvey City Council discussed lower water rates and a new bill of rights to protect water customers during a recent meeting.

Harvey 3rd Ward alderman and mayoral candidate Christopher Clark proposed the “Fair Water Bill.” After several residents

received water bills ranging from $400 to $500, Clark thought residents needed protection.

“People are suffering as a result of this water crisis. For some, such high-water bills are a life changing event. Something needs to be done.”

Clark has requested City Council immediately start committee meetings and then put the measure on the January 14, 2019 agenda.

“Whenever this council wanted to do something, it got it done. There is no reason we cannot do this now to help Harvey residents.” Clark said.

After years of alleged mismanagement, Harvey owes Chicago millions for water. Harvey raised water rates after a Cook County judge found that Harvey illegally diverted water cash owed to Chicago, according to a press release.

Cook County Board Honors South Suburban Business Owner For His Philanthropic Work

During a recent Board meeting, the Cook County Board of Commissioners along with the Board President, Toni Preckwinkle, presented a proclamation to Early Walker, a south suburban resident and business owner, that honored the numerous charitable contributions he has made in Cook County.

34-year-old Walker is the owner and CEO of W&W Towing, a business he built from the ground up with no former experience in towing and only one used tow truck. W&W Towing was established in 2013 and since then has become a very successful business. Walker wholeheartedly attributes his own success to his passion for giving.

“I was definitely shocked and I’m definitely humbled. I was elated by the honor and very excited, to say the least. I don’t do any of this for the accolades but a lot of what I do does gain attention and attraction just by me posting it on social media,” said Walker. “When I started this, it was just a thought and I had never towed a car and to see what has happened from 2013 to now and all that has come is just astonishing.”

A resolution of the Board of Commissioners of Cook County was represented to Walker that recognized W&W Towing as a towing company known for it’s generosity to the less fortunate. The resolution also recognizes Walker for providing children who have lost their parents to gun violence with Christmas shopping sprees, for providing over 25,000 turkeys to struggling families on Thanksgiving, for sending over 30,000 bottles of water to Flint, Michigan when news broke of their water crisis, and for traveling to Houston after the city was devastated by a hurricane to hand deliver aid to the most devastated communities.

tow truck and she was sitting in her car with her three kids and she was crying and told me that she didn’t have money for a tow and told me to go ahead and leave. I told her not to worry about it and that I would tow

her home for free,” said Walker.

“I probably didn’t even have it for myself but I just felt so sorry for

her and her family. I pretty much split what I was going to do for my daughter in half just so that this other family could have some type of a Christmas and that’s how it started,” said Walker.

Don’t Let Small Dollar Loans Ruin Your Holidays MONEY MATTERS

In this wonderful time of the year when family and friends gather in good cheer to celebrate the holidays, nearly everyone has a number of lists. From greeting cards to shopping for gifts, decorations and more, lists are made and reviewed to keep pace with the barrage of seasonal activities.

But if holiday lists seem bigger than budgets, turning to a highinterest, “small dollar” loan can turn joy and merriment into a financial quagmire. The good news is that holiday financial hangovers that predatory lenders give, do not need to be a part of your celebrations.

Just keep walking or drive past the brightly-colored signs advertising high-interest, small dollar loans. Both payday and car title loans can provide quick cash; but the harms these loans create will likely linger well past the winter’s cold. In truth, these predatory loans often lead to consumers paying more in interest and fees than for they money borrowed.

Research by the Center for

High-interest, “small dollar” loans can turn holiday joy and merriment into a financial quagmire.

Responsible Lending (CRL) has found that predatory payday loans drain $4.1 billion in fees from consumers annually -- borrowers who typically are unable to fully repay the original loan, usually in two weeks’ time. With average annual interest rates averaging 391 percent, 75 percent of all payday loans go to borrowers with more

than 10 loans a year.

Like payday loans, car title loans are often marketed as an easy way to get cash without a credit check – but with interest rates that tend to be 20-30 times higher than that of credit cards. The average car title loan of about $1,000 can only be secured by signing a personally-owned car as collateral. Further, the loan may only

be a fraction of the marketable value of the vehicle. While the lender holds on to a car title, the borrower is faced with triple-digit interest and, in one of five cases, a whopping 20 percent, the loss of personal transportation.

As harmful as payday and car title loans are, other seemingly harmful small dollar transactions can also cause financial havoc.

If you believe pre-paid cards will always avoid financial rip-offs, think again.

Before paying cash for this convenient form of plastic, read all of the fine print that explains the terms and fees that come with its usage. Terms and options can and do vary significantly. Many include

a range of fees from activation, to learning your current balances, reloading monies and in some cases fees for inactivity. By the time all applicable fees are assessed, the amount of money actually available on that prepaid card can shrink and shortchange how far it can help on purchases.

Similarly, the convenience of debit cards can easily trigger overdraft charges for consumers with slim or no checking account cushions. CRL research has shown that although overdraft fees vary by institution, the average $35 overdraft fee on a debit card is double the amount of the overdraft itself. Banks engage in a range of unfair and deceptive tactics to maximize these fees, which can amount to hundreds of dollars over the course of just a day or two--talk about a holiday damper. Too many overdrafts can lead to involuntary account closures.

This holiday season try adding a full measure of practical sense to help your dollars preserve the spirit and joy of the season – it only comes once a year!

Thornton Township Christmas Toy Giveaway A Success, Hundreds Attend South Holland, IL. - Thornton Township President Frank M. Zuccarelli and its Board of Trustees made hundreds of families happy with a huge toy giveaway on Saturday, December 15, 2018. Trustee Joyce M. Washington, Chairman of the Thornton Township Human Relations Commission and Santa’s helper said, “There were so many children attending the event. Lines of parents and children began to form early Saturday morning, they were so excited. We were wishing them all Merry Christmas. The event was well attended.”

Several township trustees, township officials, and others volunteered. Food and snacks were provided.

Alexandra Muse, Thornton Township Special Projects, headed up the Christmas Care Program. Children were entertained with a special visit from Santa.

More consumers are looking to use a credit card this season to pay for gifts, and they plan to take longer to pay it off than in previous years, according to a recent NerdWallet survey. In fact, more than 39 million Americans are still carrying some of last year’s holiday balance on their cards today.

While credit card use is common during the holidays, the key is making sure you use the right card, are aware of common fraud tactics and have a plan to pay off debt quickly. Here are some helpful tips from The United Services Automobile Association (USAA): • Pick the right card. The average American has 2-3 credit cards. During the holidays, make sure you use those cards that won’t leave you with financial regret afterward. Balance the benefits of reward points, zero percent APRs, or special deals, with the long-term cost of borrowing money. For example, store credit cards give exciting discounts at the time of purchase but often charge higher APRs than a card you already have in your wallet. Take a moment to think about how you will pay after the fun of holiday spending is over, and don’t forget to review the fine print associated with making big purchases.

• Be smart and safe. If you are shopping online, make sure the website starts with ‘https://’ to ensure it’s a credible site before making a purchase, and be sure to turn off Wi-Fi auto-connect and Bluetooth when you’re out and about this holiday season.

Connecting to public Wi-Fi is dangerous and less secure than connecting to your mobile network. In addition, think twice before sharing your logon information over the phone or clicking on random links in emails from unknown sources, such as “track your package,” “open your holiday greeting” or “free gift card.” Fraudsters often impersonate credible companies to get you to share your logon information or click links.

Now is also a great time to consider changing your account passwords and enrolling in multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. Using MFA, creating unique passwords, responding to fraud alerts and monitoring your accounts are critical steps during the holiday season.

• Start planning to pay it off now. Be sure to keep track of your spending so there are no surprises in the new year. Decide when you want to have your card paid off, and calculate the best plan of action based on your lifestyle and finances. Utilize your bank and credit card companies’ resources to create a realistic timeline that still allows for your everyday and monthly expenses.
