USF SOCIAL WORKERS PRESENT AT THE 64TH ANNUAL COUNCIL University of St. Francis social work educators Dr. Audrey Davis, teaching instructor, and Dr. Laura Honegger, assistant professor, presented on Sunday, November 11th at the 64th Annual Council on Social Work Education Conference in Orlando, Florida. The national conference, which took place this year from November 8th- 11th, is attended by over 2,500 social work educators each year. It fosters and facilitates best practices in areas of curriculum development and research in social work professionals.

ANTIBIOTICS CAN’T KILL THE COMMON COLD Antibiotics save lives and are critical tools for treating a number of common and more serious infections. However, antibiotics are often used when they should not, which can cause them to stop working.

Up to 50 percent of all prescribed antibiotics are not needed or are not effective as prescribed. Each year in the United States, at least two million people become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria and at least 23,000 die.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as those that cause colds, flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow, or green. And taking antibiotics will not make you feel better if you have a virus. Antibiotics are only needed for treating infections caused by bacteria, but even some bacterial infections get better without antibiotics, including many sinus infections and some ear infections.

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST ONLINE SELLERS OF E-CIGARETTES AND ‘E-JUICES’ Mayor Emanuel joined Corporation Counsel Ed Siskel, Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Commissioner (BACP) Rosa Escareno, and Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) Commissioner Julie Morita, MD and filed a lawsuit recently against eight online sellers of e-cigarette products for illegally selling their products to Chicago youth. The lawsuit, which was filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, is one of several initiatives designed to combat the illicit marketing and sales of e-cigarette products to Chicago’s young people.

Denise Jordan Walker is the founder of Candid Public Relations and a well-known former smooth jazz radio host in Chicago. Over the last few decades, Walker has built a long list of celebrity clients and developed an impeccable ear for jazz music.

Walker got her start as the spokesperson for Fashion Fair Cosmetics with Johnson Publishing Company, a Chicago based company known for publishing Ebony Magazine and Jet Magazine.

Eventually, Walker was hired as a radio host for WNUA 95.5 FM which was a popular smooth jazz radio station based in Chicago.

“I got hired at WNUA and I was there for a long time. I was hired at WNUA before I got married and I actually got married on the air and listeners got a chance to decide if I should be Denise Jordan, or Denise Walker, or Denise Jordan Walker and everybody loved Denise

Jordan Walker. That was in 1989 when I got married and I stayed at WNUA for years until I was offered a position at V103,” said Walker.

Walker inevitably took the job at V103, a competing radio station in Chicago, after they gave her an offer she couldn’t refuse, even though she loved her job and colleagues at WNUA. “It was just devastating to me because WNUA was the best place ever. Literarily the best place that I have ever worked in my life and we were like a family but I made the decision because at the time, the money they were offering me was crazy,” said Walker.

As a result of her decision to accept a position at a competing radio station WNUA enacted a non-compete clause on Walker and made it so she could not begin working at V103 for a year after leaving WNUA. “Before I got to V103, WNUA somehow found out about it and they slapped a no-compete clause on me so that meant that I couldn’t

work in radio anywhere else for up to a year. I was totally shocked,” said Walker.

Little did she know, this seemingly life-shattering event would lead her to a successful career in public relations. The same night that Walker was released from WNUA and learned that she could not begin working at V103 for a year was the same night she met Bernie Mac who would become her first celebrity client as a public relations specialist.

“The day WNUA let me go was the day I met Bernie and then next day here I was working for Bernie and on the payroll,” said Walker.

Today, Walker has a long list of clients including the Chicago Bulls, The Walter Payton Foundation, The Hadiya Pendleton Foundation, Bernie Mac, Billy Dee Williams, Al Roker, Maysa, The Harlem Globetrotters, John Travolta, Al Richard Simmons, and many more.

Through the years of struggle and success, Walker has remained a resident of Chicago’s south suburbs.

One in Four Items in a Recycling Cart are Not Recyclable, Are you recycling right?

On America Recycles Day,local government leaders, multiple organizations and the waste industry, asked consumers if they are recycling right. Based on audits performed by the recycling industry, one in four items placed in the recycling cart is not recyclable which has led to increased contamination.

To tackle the issue of recycling contamination, the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA) and Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) formed a state-wide task force to bring the recycling industry - haulers and sorting facility operators - together with government and business to develop simple, cohesive recycling education materials to help residents better understand what items should and should not be placed in recycling carts.

“Recycling is more highly contaminated with non-recyclable garbage than ever before,” said Walter Willis, SWALCO executive director and co-chair of the NWRA – SWANA task force.

“The non-recyclable items weigh down sorting facilities, reduce commodity prices, and affect the re-manufacturing markets,” continued Willis.

“Recycling facilities report contamination from 25% to over 35% in some of the recycling streams,” said Lisa Disbrow, vice chair of the Illinois Chapter of NWRA and co-chair of the NWRA and SWANA task force. “As recycling facilities add labor to help remove contamination and slow lines to improve recovery, these additional costs are passed along which may increase costs for local governments, and ultimately residents,” commented Disbrow.

The task force identified the most common items placed in the recycling cart that are not recyclable including plastic bags, tanglers (i.e. garden hoses, wire, cords, clothing), food waste, medical waste including syringes, and batteries.

In addition to representatives of NWRA, SWANA, IEPA, the task force participants include: USEPA, City of Chicago, Cook County, DuPage County, Kane County, Madison County, Will County, Solid Waste Agencies of Cook County, Lake County and West Cook County, and multiple organizations including the Illinois County Solid Waste Management Association, Illinois Recycling Association, and the Steel Recycling Institute.

Free Fundraising Opportunity for Nonprofits on #GivingTuesday In an effort to increase donations to nonprofit organizations on #GivingTuesday, YouTube show host Devin Thorpe will be streaming live for 24 hours on Tuesday, November 27, 2018. He calls the event the #GivingTuesday streamathon.

The event will include interviews with nonprofit leaders who are fundraising on #GivingTuesday. While dozens have already signed up and scheduled their interviews, times are still available and Thorpe is still accepting applications at apply.gtstreamathon.org.

“Every year since the 92nd Street Y and the UN Foundation came together to organize the first #GivingTuesday, the event has grown, motivating people to make giving a part of their holiday tradition,” Thorpe says. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday help us think about our closest friends and how to make them happy. #GivingTuesday helps us turn our attention to those beyond our personal circles.”

“The #GTstreamathon is a fun way for us to expand our reach on #GivingTuesday,” says Heidi Totten, founder of 100 Humanitarians. “We’re looking to significantly increase donations this year and participating in Devin’s show gives us another way to reach new people and share urgency and excitement with our existing donor base so we can help more families lift themselves out of poverty in Kenya.”

EEOC responds to a significant increase in inquiries concerning potential discrimination claims The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) responded to a significant increase this past fiscal year in calls, emails and online inquiries concerning potential discrimination claims and high demand for its new Respectful Workplaces Training Program. The increased demand is reflected in over 554,000 calls and emails to the EEOC and more than 200,000 inquiries concerning potential discrimination claims. The launch of a nationwide online inquiry and appointment system as part of the EEOC’s Public Portal resulted in a 30 percent

increase in inquiries and over 40,000 intake interviews.

“Many people in thousands of workplaces around the country depend every day on the work of the EEOC. I am proud to say that the EEOC met the increased demand for our expertise, for information and training, and for strong enforcement to combat all forms of discrimination, including sexual harassment,” said Victoria A. Lipnic, Acting Chair.

Other fiscal year 2018 highlights include: The EEOC’s outreach programs reached 398,650 individuals, pro-

viding them with information about employment discrimination and their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. To address persistent workplace harassment, the EEOC conducted more than 300 Respectful Workplaces trainings that reached over 9,800 employees and supervisors in the private, public and federal sectors.

The EEOC secured approximately $505 million and other relief for over 67,860 victims of discrimination in the workplace. The EEOC’s legal staff resolved 141 merit lawsuits, filed 199 more in FY18, and filed 29 amicus www.thechicagocitizen.com

The EEOC’s accomplishments were detailed in the EEOC’s

Ameritech Financial, a document preparation service company that helps struggling student loan borrowers apply for federal repayment programs, wonders if making a decision like taking out college loans when someone is unprepared for what they entail is maybe just a little too similar to getting married too early.

For borrowers who don't have access to that kind of support, repayment may feel impossible. Michelle Obama Launches Becoming Book Tour In Chicago With Special Guest, Oprah Winfrey

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, recently visited Chicago to host the first stop on her book tour for the newly released memoir Becoming

by Micelle Obama. She was joined by Oprah Winfrey who interviewed Obama about the book and her life.

Prior to hosting the event at the United Center, Obama visited the Seminary Co-Op Book Store, 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave., in Hyde Park to greet fans and sign books. The bookstore serves as a significant place for Obama as she and her husband, President Barack Obama, used to live in the neighborhood.

The tell-all memoir from Mrs. Obama gives insight into her experience growing up on the south side of Chicago, her years at Princeton, her early professional life as a lawyer, how she dealt with the death of her father and close friend as a young adult, details of the 2008 presidential election, and many more private moments from her personal life, experiences she has had as a wife and mother, and reflections on the last few decades of her life as she transitioned from an everyday south sider to the First Lady of the United States.

“I’m an ordinary person who found herself on an extraordinary journey. In sharing my story, I hope to help create space for other stories and other voices, to widen the pathway for who belongs and why,” said Michelle Obama in the Epilogue of Becoming.

The 426-page book contains a number of photos of Obama and her family. The photos show her as an infant with her parents and brother, there are photos of Obama in grade school, pictures of her at Princeton, pictures of the Obamas as a young couple and a young family. You can even see photos of her on her wedding day.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, it’s the power of using your voice. I tried my best to speak the truth and shed light on the stories of people who are often rushed aside,” Obama wrote in Becoming alongside a recent photo of herself at a speaking engagement.

The Becoming book tour is taking place now through Dec. 19 and will be making stops across the country and also traveling to London and Paris. Becoming by Michelle Obama is available wherever books are sold, according to the Becoming website.

Former Army Attorney Says NFL Players Have Abandoned Racial Injustice Protests NFL players have largely abandoned both challenging the harsh reality of racial injustice in this country via protest and supporting Colin Kaepernick as the number of demonstrations during the anthem continues to dwindle, according to Kaia Wright, a highly decorated former Army attorney.

Wright, who has served on tours around the world, says that the increasing number of “living while black” incidents – where whites calling the police on blacks

who go about their daily routines – are yet another reflection of the pervasiveness of racism in America.

Over the past weeks, the silent protests, initiated by former San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, become fodder for discussion when pop superstar Rihanna said she would not perform at the Super Bowl. This was followed by an astonishingly callous plea from Maroon Five for Rihanna to reconsider and join them for this year’s Super Bowl performance.

Comedienne Amy Schumer also announced she will not do any Super Bowl ads. Add to this the refusal by Jay-Z to perform at the Super Bowl, and it’s clear that celebrities continue to show their support for Kaepernick’s obvious blackball from the NFL. As the season enters the second half, Wright stayed in a press release, “With more than half the 2018 NFL season completed, I’m concerned about the significant reduction in players demonstrating during the anthem. She continued, “Look, we’ve just recognized the 50th anniversary of

Tommie Smith’s and John Carlos’s bold protest of raising their fist during the national anthem; yet Kaepernick and the other NFL players are protesting several of same issues that Smith and Carlos protested in the 1960s. It’s truly unsettling to know that despite the persistence of systemic racism in this country, to include the recent proliferation of “living while black” incidents, we see fewer and fewer players demonstrating during the anthem.”
