MARKHAM -The Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County oversaw a ribbon cutting ceremony to launch the Domestic Violence Survivor Center (DVSC). Located in the Markham Courthouse, the DVSC endeavors to provide a safe place for families that have experienced instances of domestic violence and may need privacy to file their Order of Protection or meet with an advocate.

“The effects of domestic violence can be far-reaching and long-lasting, not just for the victims but also for their families and communities,” said Clerk Iris Y. Martinez.

“Despite the progress made to help victims of abuse, there is still much work to be done. The Domestic Violence Survivor Center reflects the commitment by my office in providing necessary resources.”

Among the special guests in attendance was Presiding Judge Tommy Brewer, Sixth Municipal District. “It’s a gift to the people of the south suburbs. Sometimes people miss us,” said Brewer. “I want to thank Clerk Martinez for remembering us.”

“A multi-faceted, collaborative approach is necessary to address domestic violence effectively,” said Clerk Martinez. “To that end, my team and I work tirelessly to bring together government agencies, non-profit organizations, community groups, and various other stakeholders in the fight against domestic violence.”

October is observed nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness Month with the intention to educate the public about domestic violence issues and promote efforts to support victims and hold abusers accountable.

SOUTHLAND COLLEGE PREP TENNIS PLAYERS ADVANCE TO STATE COMPETITION

RICHTON PARK, IL—October 18, 2023--For the first time in school history, Southland College Prep Charter High School in Richton Park will send two tennis players to compete in the state competition.

Juniors Alyssa Meeky, 16, and Kennedi Baity, 16, advanced to the Illinois High School Association 1A State Finals this week. The tennis program also placed third as a team in the 1A Marian Catholic sectional on Monday.

Southland’s Athletic Director Justin Johnson said the state finals will start on Thursday, October 19th at Barrington High School.

“This has been a very successful season for our team,” said Southland CEO Dr. Blondean Y. Davis. “We are proud of our student athletes who balance academics and sports and have made history this year.”

Alyssa Meeky, whose overall record was 21 wins and 3 losses for the season, placed third in the sectional tournament. Kennedi Baity’s record this season was 18 wins and 5 losses and she placed fourth in the sectional.

Alyssa started playing tennis when she was 9 years old because she saw her older sister, Ashley playing.

Although this is the first time that two players have advanced, state qualifying is not new to Southland girls’ tennis. Ashley Meeky was Southland’s first tennis player to qualify for state her freshman year and qualified for state in tennis every year of her high school career.

Ashley, who graduated in 2020, finished 2nd team all-state her senior year and won sectionals twice during her high school career. Ashley is currently a senior and plays club tennis at Vanderbilt University.

Another inspiration for Alyssa is U.S. Open champion Coco Gauff and tennis great Serena Williams.

Kennedi Baity also looks up to Gauff and other tennis greats like Novak Djokovic, but her greatest hero is her late father, Micheal, who started her playing tennis when she was in third grade. Baity’s dream is to play Division 1 tennis at Florida A & M University.

Natural Hair and Braiding Academy Fulfills Need Continued from page 1

Because there wasn’t a hair braider program, Drake went to cosmetology school. She fell in love with styling hair. She wanted to create a space where people would be able to get their hair braiding license, so she opened Fusion Hair & Braid Academy.

Drake saw the demand for a hair braiding program and started the process to open Fusion Hair and Braid Academy in 2022. She decided to open the location in Joliet because she wanted to give back to the community where she grew up.

Through the program, students will learn how to braid hair, sanitation, the fundamentals of business, retail, proper procedures that relate to natural hair styling, as well as understanding the texture and density of hair when braiding. Drake said when people are properly trained how to care for hair and how to braid hair, it decreases the possibility of people losing their hair or losing their edges.

Those who participate in the program will receive 300 hours of training. The day program is 10 weeks, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; there also is a part-time program, which is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and lasts for 16 weeks.

Drake also owns and operates Luv’Le Style Salon, which is located in

Romeoville, and sells hair. She also has a haircare line called Fusion Hair Care. Drake wanted to create the hair care line because she wanted to create her own products. It took her 14 to 15 months to formulate and complete the product creation process. She wanted to make sure the product was something she stood behind.

She has a foundation called Fusion Foundation, where she teaches parents how to shampoo, style and maintain their children’s hair in between salon visits. She wanted to provide resources to parents who have foster children and adopted children. With Fusion Foundation, she knew parents would want to know which products were the best to use on their children’s hair. It is sold inside the salon and at Fusion Hair & Braid Academy. It also is available on Walmart’s website.

“I wanted to create something for the moms, the dads, or whoever to be able to have a product to use that I 100 percent stand behind,” Drake said.

In opening up Fusion Hair & Braid Academy, Drake wants to use the hair care line as an example of how to be an entrepreneur and build a brand. She wants the students to know they have options in the entrepreneurial space of being a hair stylist. She also wants to empower and make an impact on her students.

New Survey Finds Household Parenting Equity, Workplace Flexibility Key Factors in Ending the Motherhood Penalty CHICAGO, Ill. - Le Village Cowork, a coworking space combined with full-time onsite childcare, is on a mission to end the Motherhood Penalty by providing real opportunities for working parents, especially mothers. Le Village’s recent Modern Motherhood Survey captured that 61% of mothers have taken a pay cut and/or lesser work responsibilities to have more flexibility or time with their child(ren).

Le Village surveyed both member and non-member Chicagoland mothers about balancing childcare, household, and career commitments. Results show that household parenting equity and workplace flexibility are key factors in a mother’s career involvement. The data also shows measurable positive indicators for Le Village members.

Key Findings: 31% of mothers reported not having an equitable partnership with their spouse or partner when it comes to parenting and household responsibilities compared with 16% of Le Village member mothers.

23% of mothers reported their household equity dynamic got worse since COVID compared to 12% of Le Village member mothers.

42% of mothers have left traditional/corporate working environments for more flexibility to spend more time with their child(ren) compared to 32% of Le Village member mothers. However, of the Le Village moms that left a traditional/corporate environment, 44% of them remain in the workforce, now as small business owners.

Mothers in both groups agree that work schedule flexibility is the greatest barrier to work/life balance with

management expectations and ability to work remotely included as other notable factors.

Gov. Pritzker Announces Proposal to Create Unified Early Childhood State Agency CHICAGO — Governor Pritzker was joined by Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, Deputy Governor Grace Hou, Deputy Governor Martin Torres, elected officials, and state agency directors at the Carole Robertson Center for Learning to announce a proposal to create a new state agency to house all early childhood programs and funding. The new unified agency will provide a more equitable, integrated, and holistic system of services for young children and families in Illinois.

“We need a governance system that is unified in its approach to serving families, working with providers, and promoting equity,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Our Smart Start Illinois plan served as the catalyst for this transition, but this new agency will cover so much more. From ISBE’s Early Childhood Block Grants and DCFS’ day care licensing program to DHS’ childcare, home visiting and early intervention services, soon all of these programs will be administered under the same agency.”

The proposal builds on Governor Pritzker’s work to make Illinois the best state in the nation for families raising young children, with the nation’s best early childhood education and childcare system. Currently, services are housed in three separate agencies—the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS), and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

To initiate the multi-year process, Governor Pritzker is signing an Executive Order, and will work with the General Assembly on legislation in the spring of 2024.

Ann Whalen has served as the Director of Policy for Advance Illinois since 2019, where she works on education advocacy issues including addressing Illinois’ teacher shortage, the improved use of data to drive decision making, social-and-emotional learning, education funding, and more. She has an extensive background in education policy and implementation at the local, state, and federal levels.

Before joining Advance, Ann spent two years at Denver Public Schools focused on academic administration.

Previously, Ann served as the Director of the United States Department of Education Implementation and Support Unit, helping to administer the Obama administration’s Race to the Top program. Additionally, she served as Acting Assistant Secretary in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education where she focused on improving academic outcomes. Prior to her work in Washington, Ann was Deputy Chief Education Officer at Chicago Public Schools.

She holds a BA in Political Science from Stanford University.

Advisory Committee Governor Pritzker is establishing an external advisory committee to seek input from stakeholders across the state in preparation for the proposal. The committee will be chaired by Bela Moté and work closely with Ann Whalen.

Bela Moté is the Chief Executive Officer of the Carole Robertson Center for Learning, one of the largest early childhood and youth development organizations in Chicago, serving close to 2,500 children through their childcare centers and affiliate programs. She previously led the Early Childhood Funding Commission.

services at DHS Day care licensing currently managed by DCFS Governor Pritzker established the Illinois Commission on Equitable Early Childhood Education and Care Funding (“Early Childhood Funding Commission”) to analyze and make recommendations on funding goals and mechanisms to provide equitable access to high-quality early childhood education and care services for all children from birth to age five. The Commission concluded its efforts in 2021 with the recommendation to consolidate all early childhood programs into a new agency, making it a more accessible system for providers and families.

The unified agency will address the difficulties that providers and families experience when navigating three different agencies. Having a governance system that is unified in its approach to serving families, working with providers, and promoting equity is why several states— including Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, Oregon, and New Mexico—already created new state agencies dedicated solely to early childhood.

The change will further advance the Pritzker administration’s transformative investments in comprehensive early childhood education and care, including Smart Start Illinois. Beginning with a $250 million investment this year, Smart Start Illinois is a multi-year plan to eliminate preschool deserts, increase funding to childcare providers to raise wages and quality, and reach more vulnerable families with early support.

Smart Start Illinois demonstrates the state’s ongoing commitment to children, families, teachers, and childcare providers. The $250 million investment in FY24 includes: $75 million additional for the Early Childhood Block Grant to put Illinois on a path to creating more than 20,000 new Pre-K spots for every child who wants one $130 million for nation-leading Childcare Workforce Compensation Contracts that will stabilize providers and give childcare workers a raise An additional $40 million for Early Intervention programs to enhance services for families and give providers a raise $5 million to expand the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Home Visiting Program so more families who want it can receive this early support In addition to Smart Start investments, other investments being made in the early Childhood Education Space include: $100 million in capital dollars for early childhood providers to expand existing facilities and build new facilities $70 million for the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) $12 million in new funding for scholarships and apprenticeships to expand the childcare workforce $1.6 million to launch the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a statewide literacy initiative to send free books to children from birth-through age five

HOMEOWNERS MAY BE ELIGIBLE FOR PROPERTY TAX SAVINGS ON THEIR PROPERTY TAX BILL

Cook County – Property tax exemptions can lower a homeowner’s Second Installment Property Tax Bill (tax bill). Homeowners are encouraged to review the bottom left corner of the tax bill to review exemption deductions. Most homeowners are eligible for the Homeowner Exemption, which saves an average of approximately $950 dollars. Senior homeowners over 65 are likely eligible for additional property tax savings with the Senior Exemption.

The automatic renewals related to COVID-19 ended this year and many homeowners needed to resume annual filings for the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze “Senior Freeze” and Veterans with Disabilities Exemptions. Seniors and Veterans are encouraged to carefully review their tax bills to ensure they have the correct exemption deductions applied.

If a homeowner believes they are eligible for an exemption, they can apply for their missing property tax savings by completing a Certificate of Error application. The Certificate of Error process provides homeowners with an opportunity to redeem missing exemptions for the 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018 tax years.

Homeowners are encouraged to submit an online application immediately or make an appointment to apply for missing exemptions.

Accepted photo IDs and documents required to apply are listed on the Assessor’s website.

As a reminder, homeowners are responsible for paying the entire tax bill to the Cook County Treasurer’s Office by Friday, December 1, 2023.

If a homeowner paid the original amount due, they would receive a refund check from the Cook County Treasurer’s Office in the mail once the application is processed by the Assessor’s Office.

JOYCE ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR TWO LOCAL SCHOOLS FOR INCREASED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES KANKAKEE – Two schools in the 40th District are set to receive funding to strengthen mental health services for youth, thanks to support from State Senator Patrick Joyce.

“Many children have struggled with their mental health in recent years,” said Joyce (D-Essex). “As legislators, it is important we are providing the help and support that children need.”

The funding is being offered to help schools and local agencies improve student care through workforce enhancements, developing frameworks to prevent adverse childhood experiences, interventions to assist children suffering from trauma and training for medical and school staff to expand adolescent mental health resources.

A total of $9.5 million in funding will be awarded to 40 different applicants across the state. The funding is primarily from the CDC’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding program authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act plus $500,000 in state dollars.

Joyce’s district has two schools set to receive funding: Bourbonnais Elementary School District 53, $313,341; and Chicago Heights School District 170, $342,674.

“Our children’s mental health is a top priority,” said Joyce. “This funding will be a significant step toward ensuring students in our community are receiving needed resources.”

Instacart and Wellness West Announce Partnership to Tackle Food Insecurity on Chicago’s West Side CHICAGO (Oct. 24, 2023) – Wellness West, a coalition of Chicago’s health and safety-net institutions, and Instacart (Nasdaq: CART), the leading grocery technology company in North America, today announced a new partnership that leverages the scale and convenience of Instacart to help food-insecurity and chronically ill individuals on the West Side of Chicago.

Celebrating 55 years as the pioneering, influential and legendary 1960’s and 70’s American R&B/Soul Girl Group HONEY CONE who were recently inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame, we would love to set up an interview with you and founding member Shelly Clark as they reunite to embark on a new U.S. tour at an astonishing 80 years old.

Honey Cone were the first girl group to usher in a new, more assertive era lyrically with their strong messages about female empowerment. They weren’t singing about just love this time like their idol girl groups of the 1960s, they wrote lyrics that were a rallying call to women everywhere to stand up for themselves as they entered into the 1970’s.

The iconic group formed

by Shelly Clark, Edna Wright, and Carolyn Willis in 1968 were the premier female group for Hot Wax Records, operated by the famed writing team Holland–Dozier–Holland. This trio wrote, arranged and produced the songs that helped define the Motown sound in the 1960s, and Honey Cone was the first band they signed and produced after they departed from Motown in 1968.

An original member and co-founder of The Honey Cone, Shelly Clark has an extensive and diverse career in the entertainment industry. She recorded and toured with Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones, and Little Richard.

She also toured nationally with The Ike & Tina Turner Revue as one of the storied Ikettes. With Honey Cone, Shelly was part of creating an enduring legacy of Billboard No. 1 and Top 10 hits that garnered numerous gold records and esteemed industry awards.

How to Overcome Job Hunt Burnout in Today’s Tough Market (StatePoint) As the job search continues for unemployed Americans, a new national survey reveals a massive case of job hunt burnout.

The Insight Global survey, conducted among recently unemployed American adults actively seeking employment, found that a competitive job market, a lack of applicable jobs, low self-confidence and an inability to interview well are all contributing factors in job candidates’ lack of success in securing employment.

Fifty-five percent of respondents have been searching for a new job for so long that they are completely burnt out, and many are willing to take drastic measures to save and make money in the meantime: More than 2 in 5 would live at home with their parents; the same amount would rather create an Etsy business or thrift flip than send out another blast of resumes, and of Gen Z respondents, 44% admit they would rather get a sugar daddy or sugar mommy than apply to more jobs.

“It’s no wonder that so many unemployed Americans are feeling unmotivated – between several years of a volatile job market, headcount reductions, budget cuts, hiring freezes and a total overhaul of the way companies are running their businesses, it can feel downright impossible to get back on track,” says Bert Bean, CEO of Insight Global, a leading national staffing company.

To beat job hunting burnout and get back in the game, Bean recommends the following tips: • Rethink Remote: Of millennials surveyed, 21% feel they’re still unemployed because they will only apply to remote job opportunities. a family can own. It serves as a wealth-generating opportunity for current and future generations as the home’s value appreciates over time. Yet, for hundreds of thousands of people who inherited their land and homes from family members, these assets could be at risk.

Many families have experienced problems with properties that have been passed down without a will or estate plan. These properties are referred to as heirs’ property. If the deed for a property is in the name of the deceased relative and a will does not exist, it results in a “fractured” or “tangled” title shared among all multiple family members or “heirs.” This makes it difficult for heirs to maintain and manage the property in several ways, like securing a loan or selling the property. Additionally, heirs’ property owners are often cut off from accessing governmental repair and rebuilding programs and property tax relief programs.

A key driver of heirs’ property is a lack of formal estate planning. Unfortunately this issue disproportionately impacts Black and Latino Americans. According to a 2023 national survey from Caring.com, only 29% of Black and 23% of Hispanic respondents had a will or other estate planning document, compared to 39% of white respondents.

“In some families, money, and particularly estate planning, is a taboo subject, but it needs to be discussed. Assets can easily be lost if steps aren’t taken to protect them,” says Stacy Spann, head of Housing Access and Affordability

These resources include legal assistance for people who need help creating a will or who are already facing heirs’ property challenges, as well as expert advice about tangled titles, estate planning, real estate taxes and more.

Beyond building generational wealth, taking steps to protect it is essential. With proper planning, diligence and time, you can pass down assets to loved ones that will open the door to new opportunities and advantages.
