SXU SECURES $3 MILLION U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TITLE V GRANT Saint Xavier University (SXU) was awarded a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education under its Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Title V Program to increase retention and graduation rates.

The Comprehensive, Aligned Supports for Attainment (CASA) initiative outlined in SXU’s successful proposal (#P031S190311) will enhance student outcomes through an institution-wide approach.

“Identified gaps in student achievement will be reduced through this grant, aligning the needs of our students with crucial support for success,” said SXU President Laurie M. STACEY ABRAMS TO DELIVER SPEECH ON VOTER SUPPRESSION ON NOV. 15 Former Georgia House Democratic Leader Stacey Abrams will deliver a major speech on voter suppression one year after her narrow defeat in Georgia’s gubernatorial race, at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Friday, November 15.

In the immediate aftermath Stacey Abrams of her hotly contested defeat to Republican (and Georgia’s then-secretary of state) Brian Kemp, Abrams launched Fair Fight Action, and together with another advocacy group, filed a federal lawsuit seeking to overhaul Georgia’s election system on the grounds that the current system impaired citizens’ ability to vote in the 2018 gubernatorial election, and thus deprived them of their constitutional rights guaranteed under the First, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments.

The South Suburban Peace Alliance recently hosted the South Suburban Intervention Peace Summit on 1906 W. 174th St. in Hazel Crest. The purpose of the Summit was to inform residents on peace and safety plans for the south suburbs and to engage in open discussions about violence in the community and how it can be addressed by residents and grassroots organizers.

“In the Southland region, we are getting the backlash of the trauma and the gun violence in Chicago and it’s something that we have to be proactive about. We have to gather now and mobilize and do what we need to do to help these families in crisis because there are a lot of families suffering from the trauma of gun violence and it goes far beyond just even the fatality.

People are suffering and many do not have the proper help nor resources to deal with it because the south suburbs have been tremendously overlooked,” said Kimberly

Williams, president and director of the South Suburban Peace Alliance.

The South Suburban Peace Alliance is a nonprofit organization that was created

by Williams after she was personally affected by gun violence through the loss of several family members including her son. Through the loss of her son, Williams came to realize that there was a great need for trauma care and victim support services in Chicago’s South Suburbs and took it upon herself to work towards establishing those services and addressing the root causes of violence in the area, according to information provided by the South Suburban Peace Alliance.

“Our primary focal point is to cause intervention and prevention to stop this onslaught of senseless killing and the trauma that it causes because we know that there is a ripple effect and it is affecting the people that live here. This violence is not only taking lives but the negative impact is terrible and it’s affecting families,” said Williams.

Roughly a dozen people attended the

South Suburban Intervention Peace Summit and were able to participate in discussions about violence in their communities and how it affects them. The attendees were also able to familiarize themselves with the South Suburban Peace Alliance and its plan for creating peace and safety in the southland region.

“We want the community to know that we’re here for them, that they matter, and that their voice matters. Also, we want to make them aware of our systems, our training, and our services. We launched a Breaking Destructive Cycles of Trauma and Violence reform campaign that we will be moving forward with throughout the faith-based community and taking from church to church to basically engage the community,” said Williams.

The South Suburban Peace Alliance is hosting an Impact Meeting on Oct. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on 14720 Page Ave. in Harvey and will use the meeting to connect with new volunteers and continue to spread their message.

NAACP Mourns The Loss Of Civil Rights Icon, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings The NAACP mourns the passing of Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, a resounding civil rights icon that prevailed in the face of adversity against all the odds.

“As a devoted statesman to Baltimore and the civil rights movement, Rep. Cummings was among the most passionate and spirited members of congress. He demanded justice on every front and never shied away from standing up for the most vulnerable,” said Derrick Johnson, president and CEO, NAACP. “From his days in the Maryland General Assembly to his key role as chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Congressman Cummings dedicated his life to combating oppression in all its forms — and holding oppressors accountable.”

Congressman Cummings consistently brought attention to the plight of African-Americans and oppressed populations throughout his 23-year service in the U.S. House of Representatives. A native and proud member of the Baltimore community, he consistently took action on policies and legislation that improved his district.

Rep. Cummings became a nationally-recognized figure when he was appointed the chair of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in 2019. One of the few African-Americans to lead such a prestigious committee, Rep. Cummings often took swift action to call out inequity and abuse of power when confronted.

The William Everett Group Selected as 2020 Census Program Administrator After a robust Request for Proposal (RFP) process, the Cook County Board of Commissioners has selected The William Everett Group, a certified African American-owned and woman-owned business enterprise, to provide program administration services for the County’s 2020 Census Complete Count outreach and communications program.

Working closely with the Cook County Complete Count Commission and Bureau of Economic Development, the group will increase awareness, promote self-response, and improve the response rate in hard-to-count communities.

Vera Creative, a Latinx and woman-owned full-service marketing and public relations agency, is one of the subconsultants, having extensive experience with outreach, using many platforms, in hard-to-count communities.

“We look forward to working with The William Everett Group, as the 2020 Census is important to every resident of Cook County,” said Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle. “To state it clearly, billions of federal dollars are at stake in areas such as transportation, healthcare, affordable housing, and community development, to name a few. An accurate Census helps ensure fair representation at all levels of government including congressional and commissioner districts. So, it is vital that every resident of Cook County is counted.”

The William Everett Group has had extensive experience with large scale projects as well as management consulting and information technology services within Cook County since 2010. Their work on managing the Chicago 311 Community Engagement Project was an 18-month campaign designed to connect Chicago’s residents to the City’s new, modernized 311 non-emergency system. They successfully connected with hundreds of community organizations in over 250 local and regional areas.

Their extensive work included a social media campaign and various materials in multiple languages, resulting in outreach that included a strong focus on hard-to-reach communities such as the homeless, African American, LGBTQ, Latinx, physically and mentally disabled residents.

Their experience includes corporate, government, and non-profit clients, with an emphasis on reaching minority and hard-to-reach communities in the 2010 Census, including the Latinx community.

“The William Everett Group has comprised a team of Census experts along with community engagement, marketing and media professionals who are passionate about the work we do on behalf of the citizens of Cook County,” stated Ellen Rozelle Turner, The William Everett Group’s president and CEO. “We look forward to increasing the awareness and participation of hard to count communities so that they can rightly receive the resources that are afforded to them as a part of the census effort.”

The William Everett Group will develop a comprehensive communications and outreach plan, oversee all efforts of the Local Governmental Complete Count Committees (LGCCCs) and Local Complete Count Census Commissions (LCCCs), as well as evaluate and recommend funding to the Complete Count Census Commission for LGCCCs and LCCCs. In June 2019, the Cook County Board president and the Board of Commissioners established the Cook County Complete County Census Commission to guide the county’s work on the 2020 Census.

Family Owned Italian Ice and Gelato Company To Relaunch In South Suburbs

Over 25 years ago, two south suburban families came together to create Zarlengo, Inc. and to establish Zarlengo’s as a family-owned and operated Italian ice and gelato company in Chicago Heights.

Recently, Zarlengo’s announced it would be relaunching its business with a new building that was made possible through a tax incentive program.

Zarlengo’s new 6,000 square-foot building will be located at 257 W. Joe Orr Rd. in Chicago Heights and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020, according to information provided by the mayor’s office in Chicago Heights.

“For 26-years, Zarlengo’s has treated Chicago Heights residents to its hand-dipped in dark chocolate ice cream “Zar bars” and 50 different flavors of Italian ice,” said David Gonzalez, mayor of Chicago Heights. “With its new expanded facility, Zarlengo’s will be better able to distribute its Italian ice, gelato, and ice cream novelties throughout the United States and I am proud that Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation helped make the expansion possible.”

The Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation was instrumental in helping Zarlengo’s to relaunch in the community by providing the company with a tax incentive. The tax incentive program, which was approved by Cook County, will provide Zarlengo’s with a tax credit that could reduce their tax bill by nearly half every year for the next eight years, according to information provided by the mayor’s office in Chicago Heights.

The first item ever produced by Zarlengo’s was the Zar Bar, an ice cream bar that was hand-dipped in dark chocolate. Now, Zarlengo’s produces over 10 varieties of Zar Bars, gelato, and 50 flavors of Italian ice, according to information provided by Zarlengo’s.

“Today, our ice cream and Italian ice can be found in restaurants, country clubs, specialty stores, hospitals, grade schools, Sysco Chicago, trade shows throughout the Chicago region, and at U.S. Cellular Field during every White Sox home game,” said Thomas Zarlengo, president of Zarlengo, Inc. “With our new facility, we will be able to better distribute our products throughout the country and we are deeply grateful to the Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation for helping us with the property tax incentive program and to Mayor Gonzalez for his support for local businesses in Chicago Heights.”

Zarlengo’s will invests over $1 million in the construction of its new facility in Chicago Heights and through the process, dozens of new construction jobs will be made available along with the addition of up to 10 new full-time employees and up to 10 new part-time employees at the location once it’s completed, according to information provided by the mayor’s office in Chicago Heights.

The Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation is an organization that supports the creation of new businesses in Chicago Heights along with working to retain and expand existing businesses and stimulates economic growth in the south suburban community.

Illinois Department of Labor Releases Top 5 Safety Violations for Illinois Fire Departments Worker safety is the primary mission of the Illinois Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a division of the Illinois Department of Labor. Documenting dangers is one way to avoid them in the future. With that in mind, Illinois OSHA is releasing the Top 5 safety violations Illinois fire departments received in fiscal year 2019.

“We hope that by pointing out the most common safety violations our inspectors have documented at fire departments around the state, that we

can avoid or lessen these dangers going forward,” said Ben Noven, director of Illinois OSHA. Illinois OSHA’s jurisdiction is over public employees while federal OSHA covers private sector employees.

Top 5 Fire Department Safety Violations 1. Respiratory Protection – This involves providing the proper respirators for workers when necessary to protect them from harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gases, smokes, sprays, or

vapors in the workplace air.

2. Fire Brigade – This involves the basic organizational structure; the type, amount, and frequency of training to be provided to fire brigade members; the expected number of members in the fire brigade; and the functions that the fire brigade is to perform at the workplace.

3. Hazard communications – This involves providing label warnings of hazardous chemicals, data sheets for such hazardous materials and training of employees on these hazards. www.thechicagocitizen.com

4. Bloodborne pathogens – This involves providing protection from blood, other body fluids and other potentially infectious materials that may result from the performance of a worker’s duties.

5. Walking working surfaces – This involves keeping walking surfaces clean, orderly, in good repair, dry whenever possible and free from hazards such as sharp objects or loose boards.

Illinois OSHA protects the health and safety of public employees through

the inspection, investigation and evaluation of public facilities and working conditions to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health standards and conducts educational and advisory activities to assure safe and healthy working conditions.

Illinois OSHA is partially funded by two federal grants. The State Plan is a shared 50 percent state/50 percent federal funding. The On-Site Consultation Cooperative Agreement is funded 90 percent by a federal grant with 10 percent state funding.

MBDA Awards NAIC Million Dollar Grant To Raise $1 Billion For Investment In Minority Entrepreneurs The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Association of Investment Companies (NAIC), the largest network of diverse-owned private equity firms and hedge funds, recently announced that MBDA has awarded NAIC a $1.4 million grant to support a project that will facilitate the aggregation and deployment of approximately $1 billion in growth capital into minority-owned businesses.

Access to capital remains the most important factor limiting the ability of many of the nation’s 11 million minority- and womenowned business enterprises (MWBEs) to increase in scale. The $1.4 million grant demonstrates both a recognition of the obstacles faced by minority asset managers and a prioritization towards addressing the many

challenges faced by MWBEs. Through this landmark MBDA grant, NAIC will launch the Minority Growth Equity Funds Initiative, which aims to increase the amount of capital available for MWBEs poised for growth. As a key goal of the initiative, NAIC will quantify the demand for and current supply of capital focused on MWBEs, then leverage its extensive expertise and broad network to attract and invest growth capital in

innovative businesses owned by women and ethnically diverse entrepreneurs. The outcome will empower MWBEs to drive substantial job and wealth creation and to make a significant economic impact in historically underserved communities and in the Nation.

“According to U.S. Census Bureau, the number of minority-owned small businesses in the U.S. is growing much faster than the overall small business growth rate. But, despite their growth rate, minority-owned firms are still

having a much harder time accessing capital,” says MBDA National Director Henry Childs II. “MBDA is committed to getting more minority-owned businesses growth capital through forward thinking investments like the Minority Growth Equity Fund initiative.”

“The importance of minority-owned businesses to our nation’s economy cannot be overstated, but the entrepreneurs who run them are often overlooked in the growth equity market, substantially limiting their ability to scale,” says Robert L. Greene, president and CEO of the NAIC. “With the support of the MBDA and the efforts of our member firms and others, the Minority Growth Equity Funds Initiative will help position many of these businesses for enhanced contribution to the American economy of the future.”

Former NBA All-Star and Businessman Jamal Mashburn Joins Revolution Global as Board Advisor Illinois-based Revolution Global, formerly Revolution Enterprises, a multi-state cannabis health and wellness company, announced that

former NBA all-star Jamal Mashburn has been appointed an advisor to the board of directors.

Drawing on his experience as an

investor and owner and operator of dozens of retail businesses and restaurants, Mashburn will advise Revolution on expansion,

social equity issues, and corporate marketing.

Minorities are underrepresented in the sector as investors, operators, and employees. According to a Marijuana Business Daily survey, only 17 percent of cannabis executives are minorities.

The Orrington Institute Recently Hosted "The Most Distinguished Women of Illinois "Awards Luncheon

The Orrington Institue recently hosted its awards luncheon recognizing Illinois Distinguished Women. Remarks and acknowledgments were given by Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Senator Mattie Hunger. The funds raised from the event went to Orrington Institute Mentoringship Program.

Melissa Washington, VP, External Affairs for ComEd was among Orrington Institute inaugural class of 45 women recognized for their accomplishment and services to society.

The Orrington Institute was founded in 2013 by Dr. James Orrington, a retired dentist. After retirement, continuing in his spirit of giving and helping young people in Chicago between the ages of 12-19 he started a mentor program which continued to this day. OI has awarded nearly $100,000 in scholarships for education, tutoring and social events.

Trunk Club Launches New Charitable Giving Platform in Partnership with Dress for Success and Career Gear Trunk Club recently announced its new charitable platform, Trunk Club Cares, focused on improving job training and preparedness in local communities through partnerships with nonprofits Dress for Success and Career Gear.

Trunk Club committed more than $30,000 and employee volunteers to both organizations, which serve communities through innovative programming designed to help individuals find employment.

“At Trunk Club, we understand the power of a good outfit and how that boost of confidence can impact your day-to-day work and career, regardless of your experience or where you are in your career,” said Fanya Chandler, president of Trunk Club. “We designed this program by listening carefully to our employees’ and customers’ passions for giving back.

We’re proud and honored to support both of these organizations that share our values and are making a tremendous impact in our communities.”

Trunk Club partnered with Dress for Success to host four volunteer days for employees at their boutiques where employees worked with program clients to create interview outfits.

Additionally, Trunk Club hosted a resume boot camp during which Dress for Success clients learned about interview best practices and had mock interviews with Trunk Club employees. Finally, Trunk Club stylists shared their time and style expertise to outfit 20 Dress for Success clients and senior executives in Chicago for a fashion show fundraiser.

“We’re so happy to partner with an organization so well aligned with our mission,” said Joi Gordon, CEO of Dress for Success.

“Trunk Club is doing important work in their communities to help people become financially independent and reach their goals.”

10 Acronyms Homebuyers Need to Know StatePoint - PMI, APR, LTV… these unfamiliar acronyms don’t need to bewilder or intimidate uninitiated homebuyers.

To help you negotiate the homebuying process like a pro, Freddie Mac is sharing definitions of 10 key acronyms you’ll encounter as you meet with lenders, make a down payment and pay back your loan.

1. APR (Annual Percentage Rate): The APR tells you the annual cost of borrowing money based on the loan amount, interest rate and certain others fees. Use it as the bottom-line number to shop and compare rates among lenders.

2. FRM (Fixed-Rate Mortgage): The most common type of mortgage, an FRM, has an interest rate that doesn’t change, giving you stability over the life of the loan.

3. ARM (Adjustable-Rate Mortgage): An ARM usually offers lower monthly payments at the outset, but after three, five or seven years, payments change with interest rates and reset periodically.

4. LTV (Loan-to-Value): The LTV ratio equals the amount of money borrowed divided by the home’s appraised value. It shows how much of your home you own versus how much you owe, and lenders use it to help evaluate the risk and terms of your loan.

Live showcase of up-and-coming local talent will take place on Saturday, October 26 The City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) has announced the 14 local artists and bands selected to participate in the 2019 ChicagoMade A&R Auditions.

The epic, live showcase of up-and-coming local talent will take place on Saturday, October 26, Noon–4pm in the Claudia Cassidy Theater of the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.). A limited number of artists were selected from more than 170 applications submitted to DCASE in September. The showcase is FREE and open to the public.

River Roast Offering Dream Wedding To One Lucky Couple Campfire Horrors at Northerly Island On Friday, October 25, the Chicago Park District will hold a screening of the movie, Interview with the Vampire, (R) at 7 p.m. as part of its 4th annual outdoor horror movie series, ‘Campfire Horrors.’

• Learn Credit Card Basics: Before leveraging the benefits of a credit card, understand the terms and conditions and the potential impact it can have on your credit score. Read the paperwork thoroughly and ask a parent or friend to help you with anything you don’t understand. Only use credit for an amount you can pay off entirely each statement. Interest rates are high, so you don’t want to be paying more for what you purchase.

• Study Student Loan Requirements: Study the different types of student loans available, and then run the numbers.

Before borrowing a dime, figure out what your payments are actually likely to be, and make sure you can truly afford to borrow without putting other financial necessities at risk.

• Open a Checking Account: You can open a checking account by filling out an application online or in person, usually in just a few minutes, as long as you have the necessary documentation banks require.

The bank will issue you a debit card, allowing you to pay for items using funds from your account. Monitor the flow of funds by checking your account online frequently.

• Monitor Credit Scores: There are three national credit bureaus that may have a credit report file for you once you start using credit. What’s in your file is what is used to calculate a credit score that lenders look at to determine if you’re a good candidate for credit. You can obtain a free credit report annually at annualcreditreport.com.

If you’re responsible for your cell phone bill and utility bills, consider using Experian Boost – a free online tool – to add these accounts to your Experian credit file and potentially increase your credit score instantly. A consistent history of on-time payments may increase your credit score.

• Budget: Learning to budget is essential, teaching you to set goals, live within your means and manage your money responsibly. Create a spreadsheet and review it on an ongoing basis.

• Use New Tech Tools: Unfortunately, the topic of money management doesn’t always appeal to young people. Only 38 percent of those surveyed find personal finance topics interesting. Luckily, techdriven tools like apps and YouTube tutorials are making financial education more interesting and accessible to generation Z.
