FOLLETT, ACCLAIMED AUTHOR KWAME ALEXANDER ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP Follett and Kwame Alexander, recently announced they have formed a partnership to launch All Books for All Kids, a literacy campaign to ensure children have access to a wide range of books no matter their background. The partnership, teams Follett – the largest provider of educational materials and technology solutions to PreK-12 libraries, classrooms, learning centers and school districts in the United States – with Alexander, a New York Times Bestselling Author, Newbery Medalist, global literacy advocate, and Founding Editor of Versify, the new publishing imprint from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

“It was Lois Lowry who said, ‘Kids deserve the right to think that they can change the world.’ How they begin to imagine a better world is through books,” Alexander said. “Literature can help them see what’s possible, can help them be more connected to each other. Books can ultimately help them, help us become more human. But we can’t segregate the books. All the books should be for all the kids.

AMERICAN RED CROSS RESPONDS TO 17 FIRES Disaster responders with the American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois recently responded to 17 fires across the 21-county region. The fires occurred in many neighborhoods including Rockford, Bolingbrook, Posen, Riverdale, Naperville and Gurnee with 6 fires happening in the city of Chicago.

The Red Cross responds to over 60,000 disasters each year. Some are large scale disasters like Hurricane Florence, recently impacting the east coast. The Red Cross recommends two easy steps to help protect your home and loved ones from a fire: get a smoke alarm and create a fire escape plan. ILLINOIS ALLIANCE FOR RETIRED AMERICANS ENDORSES KWAME RAOUL FOR AG The Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans (IARA) has endorsed Kwame Raoul, Democratic candidate for attorney general, today. IARA is a statewide organization that advocates for the rights and well-being of over 257,000 retirees and their families.

The Nature Conservancy in partnership with the Cook County Forest Preserves and The City of Markham recently hosted the first Awe of Nature Festival at the Midlothian Meadows Forest Preserve located on 15440 S. Pulaski Rd. The goal of the festival was to connect visitors to nature and showcase the Illinois Prairies.

“I learned that the community is not necessarily aware or aware and not connected to the prairies. And so, my sense of nature and learning about the prairies was ignited even more in the terms of what the prairies are and what they do and it’s connection to nature as a whole which I find to be phenomenal. I mean there’s so much in nature that’s awesome,” said Debra Williams, community outreach coordinator for The Nature Conservancy.

The Awe of Nature Festival featured outdoor activities that celebrated nature and the environment through music, arts and

crafts, bike and pony rides, performances from hip-hop dancers and gymnastic tumblers, archery, and food vendors.

“In my years of working with the Indian Boundary Prairie, the Awe of Nature Festival was one of the best bridge experiences and segue to reintroducing the City of Markham and the surrounding communities to nature. The partnership between the Cook County Forest Preserve, The Nature Conservancy and the City of Markham was a new beginning to help us learn and understand more about the importance and excitement of nature as though it were a new culture. Debra Williams as the Community Outreach Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy and Indian Boundary Prairie has been diligent in her work as she helps people understand and speak the language of nature by “connecting people to people and people to nature,” said Roger Agpawa, mayor of Markham City.

The idea of an Awe of Nature Festival was presented as a way to expose Southland residents to the many ways that nature exists

in their communities and to showcase The City of Markham which is known as the prairie capital of Illinois.

“There’s so much in nature that’s awesome and just thinking about raising the level of interest in nature is how the Awe of Nature Festival came to be. Of course, we wanted to be connected with the prairies but I also wanted to broaden the scope because nature is everywhere. Nature is not just the prairies.

Nature is outside your doors, nature is when you walk outside of your house to look at the sky,” said Williams.

The Nature Conservancy, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, is a global nonprofit organization focused on environmental activism and preservation. Since 1951, The Nature Conservancy has worked to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends, according to The Nature Conservancy’s website.

Midlothian Meadows is part of the Cook County Forest Preserves and is a place to gather and engage in outdoor recreational activities, according to the press release announcing the Awe of Nature Festival.

During the event, the 2018 Stars of the Industry Award and Annual Tourism Award Winners were recognized for their outstanding service in the hospitality and tourism industry during Fiscal Year 2018.

“Tourism fuels our economy with outside dollars and in Illinois 1 in 10 people are employed by tourism. It’s these frontline ambassadors that leave a lasting impression on visitors and keep them coming back time and again. The Annual Awards that were presented at the event are chosen by the Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau staff as a way of recognizing those that have gone above and beyond in supporting the organization's mission.

The Annual Awards presented at the Luncheon included three Awards of Merit, the Linda Morgan Award for Volunteerism, the Patricia Chase

Magon Municipal Leadership Award, the Senator Aldo DeAngelis Leadership Award, and the Member of the Year Award.

The Member of the Year was presented to Lotton Art Glass Gallery and Studios who has been a staple in arts and culture in the Chicago Southland for more than three decades. The Lotton Art Glass Gallery and Studios is a one-of-a-kind attraction in the area and has drawn in individuals and groups who want to take a first-hand look at the art of glass blowing and is always willing to accommodate tour buses and groups that are visiting the region. Glass that was crafted at this studio in the Chicago Southland has made its way to the Smithsonian, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Art Institute of Chicago, according to Petrakis.

“The Chicago Southland Convention and Visitors Bureau is motivated to recognize these workers and partners because they are a direct reflection of the value we put on our hospitality industry and these individuals should be rewarded for striving for the highest level of professionalism,” said Petrakis.

Economic Development Grant Announced to Create “Smart Roads” Congresswoman Robin Kelly recently announced the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation has been awarded a $60,700 federal grant to plan an applied research center for testing new technologies that will improve freight movements by creating “smart roads” throughout the south suburban region.

One of the center’s initiatives will be to create a strategy to prepare and digitally equip key south suburban roadways to move automated freight vehicles. The logistics technology is expected to attract manufacturing and transportation businesses to “smart roads” equipped with digitized guidance technology, further expanding the region’s already booming intermodal industry. Digitally synced roadways guiding self-driving trucks can be operational within the next five to ten years, according to local experts.

“My office wholeheartedly supported this initiative because it will position our region ahead of the dynamic changes emerging in 21st Century transportation. Once our roadways are digitized to move automated vehicles, we will draw more industries to our intermodal facilities and accelerate their growth,” Rep.

Kelly said. “This long-term modernization strategy is key to expanding and strengthening the regional economy.”

The project, named Chicago Southland Center for Smart Logistics, will create jobs and benefit key intermodal freight terminals in Dolton, Harvey and throughout Will County.

“The Southland Center for Smart Logistics will play an important role in making freight movements safer, cleaner, and more efficient,” said Reggie Greenwood, director of Economic Development for the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation.

“Its location in the South Suburbs will make our region a magnet for companies that want to use smart freight technologies, creating investments and good jobs in our communities.”

The grant, from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, will be matched with funds from Cook County and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The Neighborhood Technology Center and the University of Illinois at Chicago Urban Transportation Center are collaborating on the study with the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation serving as the lead organization.

Illinois Priorities Included in Water Resources Development Act Reauthorization U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) and Ranking Member on the Fisheries, Wildlife and Water Senate Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) applauded the inclusion of several of their priorities that will help Illinois in the America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018, which passed the Senate recently by a vote of 99-1.

The legislation will save Illinois taxpayer dollars by increasing the federal cost-share at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam, help schools test for lead in drinking water, improve urban flooding prevention and response as well as expand water infrastructure funding across Illinois and the nation.

“I’m proud to have secured these provisions that will benefit our state’s economy, save Illinois taxpayer dollars, protect children from lead in their water and create jobs through investments in water infrastructure. This legislation will help improve Army Corps programs, improve public health and safeguard our environment,” said Duckworth. “I look forward to the President signing it.”

“When it comes to funding critical infra-

structure projects, I will always fight for Illinois’ priorities,” said Durbin. “I’m pleased that this legislation provides much needed investments that will help modernize our nation’s water infrastructure and ensure access to clean drinking water for our constituents. It funds important Army Corps of Engineers projects that will prevent flooding in our communities and protect against the spread of Asian Carp to the Great Lakes. The Senate was able to work together to pass this important bipartisan bill and now it heads to the President’s desk.”

The legislation includes the following Duckworth/Durbin priorities to: · Improve federal cost sharing for the Brandon Road Lock and Dam from 50% to 80%, which will help reduce Illinois taxpayers’ burden while supporting the environment. The legislation also directs the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to consult with Illinois’ Governor on the construction of future invasive species technologies.

Authorize $4.4 billion nationwide for drinking water projects over three years to help communities in Illinois and across the nation modernize their drinking water systems.

· Provide an additional $10 million to help schools voluntarily test for lead contamination in their drinking water, helping achieve the goals of Duckworth’s Get the Lead out of Schools Act. It also requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist schools in obtaining financial assistance to eliminate lead contamination. · Support efforts to combat urban flooding by studying USACE regulations to facilitate more active federal participation in urban flooding events. The bill also promotes local management best practices to help Illinois communities develop innovative solutions that address storm water runoff, prevent flooding, reduce groundwater depletion and mitigate water quality impairments. · Extend the Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) pilot program through Fiscal Year 2021 by $50 million annually to accelerate water infrastructure investment by providing long-term, low-cost supplemental loans for regionally and nationally significant projects. · Authorize the Great Lakes Coastal Resiliency Study, which will be coordinated by the USACE, NOAA, USGS, FEMA, and EPA and

lead to recommendations on how to best manage and protect the Great Lakes coastline. The bill also reinforces efforts to protect the Great Lakes from invasive species like Asian Carp. · Improve U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) projects in Illinois by increasing transparency, enhancing effectiveness and reducing costs. This includes providing additional input opportunities for state, local and regional stakeholders, and modernizing USACE benefit-cost analysis to support the advancement of regionally significant projects like the Navigation and Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP) on the Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. · Help local governments better respond to and rebound from major weather events by integrating USACE’s work with local municipal stormwater management projects. · Improve USACE efficiency and cost-effectiveness by requiring the National Academy of Sciences to provide recommendations on the efficacy of current Corps civil works organizational structure as well as how to improve Corps’ economic principles and analytical methodologies when evaluating project budgets.

Medline Awards $150,000 in Breast Cancer Community Grants for Innovative Programs Medline has awarded $150,000 in its inaugural Medline Breast Cancer Awareness grants to six organizations fighting to eradicate breast cancer and providing counseling. The recently launched Medline Community Impact Grant Program for Breast Cancer Awareness drives awareness around prevention and early detection by providing support to organizations on the front lines of patient care.

COMMUNITIES BIG AND SMALL While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90 percent when detected early, the reality is breast cancer is the second leading cause

of death among women in the United States. The six organizations represent the various types of communities Medline serves, from rural towns to big cities, and they work with diverse groups of patients in all stages – from prevention, detection and even grief counseling for families and loved ones.

“These six organizations presented ideas to address big challenges. The work they do isn’t easy, and listening to their stories brought tears to our panel’s eyes. High Interest Rates Put Pressure on Auto Sales in September, According to Edmunds High interest rates continued to put pressure on new vehicle sales in September, according to the car shopping experts at Edmunds. The annual percentage rate (APR) on new financed vehicles averaged 5.8 percent in September, compared to an average APR of 4.8 percent in September 2017 and 4.1 percent five years ago. Interest rates have stayed above 5 percent for eight months in a row, mirroring APRs that the industry witnessed prior to the recession.

Job Growth Holds Steady, Hourly Earnings Growth Up in September The Paychex | IHS Markit Small Business Employment Watch for September shows the tight labor market continues to restrain job growth, while hourly earnings wage growth and weekly hours worked saw modest increases. At 99.18, the Small Business Jobs Index is consistent with last month's level, but slowed 0.23 percent during the past quarter, and 0.75 since this time last year. The rate of hourly earnings growth in September stands at 2.33 percent ($0.61), increasing for the first time in more than a year. Small And Mid-Size Business Owners Feel A Slight Chill In The Air Historic optimism about the national economy from the spring (50 percent) chilled slightly this fall (40 percent), but remains well above fall 2017 (29 percent), according to the PNC Economic Outlook, a semiannual telephone survey of small and middle-market business owners and executives. Four out of 10 business leaders described their outlook for the national economy as optimistic, the second-highest rating in the 15-year survey.

Those with a pessimistic outlook increased to 12 percent this fall from the historic low of 8 percent in the spring.

Similarly, half (51 percent) are optimistic regarding their own businesses for the next six months, a drop from the historic high of 58 percent in spring 2018.

Pessimism remains at a historic low of 4 percent.

"Optimism for small and mid-sized business owners about the national economy, their local economies, and their own companies remains near record highs, although it has slipped slightly since the spring, according to our fall 2018 survey," said Gus Faucher, chief economist of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. "Hiring expectations also are near a record high, as we continue to witness the second-longest economic expansion in U.S. history."

Cunningham urges citizens to get the facts about voter registration State Senator Bill Cunningham (18th District) is cautioning suburban Cook County and Chicago residents about misleading reports that the window for voter

registration has closed.

In fact, there are still plenty of opportunities to register to vote ahead of the Nov. 6 election.

“Of all the excuses people use

not to vote, claiming that it is too hard to register might be the least valid,” Cunningham said.

“Thanks to recent changes in the law, there are plenty of oppor-

tunities remaining to register to vote between now and the General Election, including the ability to register on Election Day itself.”

ONLINE REGISTRATION The easiest way to register is online at the Illinois State Board of Elections website – https://ova. elections.il.gov. Online registration is open until Sunday, Oct. 21 and is available to any Illinois citizen who has a driver’s license or state-issued identification.

‘GRACE PERIOD’ REGISTRATION So-called “grace period” registration is available at all Cook County and City of Chicago early voting sites until Nov. 5. New voters can register and vote in-person on the same day at each site as long as they bring two forms of identification.

Host Alpana Singh returns to WTTW’s CHECK, PLEASE WTTW’s Emmy-winning local restaurant review series CHECK, PLEASE! premieres its 18th season with a familiar face in the hosting chair! Alpana Singh, noted local restaurateur and master sommelier, joins the table on Friday, October 26 at 8:00 pm on WTTW11 and wttw.com/checkplease.

Susan G. Komen’s highly successful Passionately Pink for the Cure program engages millions in October who chose a day to wear pink, fundraise for Komen and spread life-saving messages of early detection. As the former co-anchor of The

Early Show, René interviewed countless leaders and celebrities, including First Lady Laura Bush and Senator John McCain.

In early January 2007, René underwent a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy, the removal of both breasts. Today, she is completely healthy and living life to the fullest. In addition to being a wife, mother, business woman and tireless breast cancer activist, René is the author of Good Enough Mother, published in March 2007.

René is an active member of the National Association of Black Journalists and is a recipient of the 2004 Gracie Allen Award for Individual Achievement in the National Best Anchor category for her breast cancer series. She is married to Buff Parham, and has two children.

Renowned Chicago-based photographer Steve Schapiro has given history a human face throughout his career, contributing images to Life, Look, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and numerous other publications.

Schapiro’s work is celebrated in Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro, a special exhibition on view now at Illinois Holocaust Museum. Viewers will experience the breadth of the civil rights movement, as well as vivid portraits of celebrities who challenged - and changed - our cultural norms.

The exhibition’s 46 largeformat photographs tell the story of seminal moments in history from the March on Washington (1963) to Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign (1968). Schapiro’s documentary approach comprises emotional portraits of heroes ranging from Rosa Parks to a sanitation striker, and from Joan Baez to Rita Schwerner, widow of Michael Schwerner, one of the three activists killed by the Ku Klux Klan near Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1964.

Other images suggest how martyrs become icons. In a haunting triptych of images, the subject is missing, as Schapiro’s camera surveys Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Memphis motel room the day after King’s 1968 assassination.

As he documented the tumult of the 1960s, Schapiro spent days and weeks with many of his subjects, some of whom — Robert Kennedy, James Baldwin, and David Bowie — became his close

friends. These personal relationships add depth to the historic moments he captured.

Guest curator and civil rights historian Erik S. Gellman observes, “Schapiro documented the civil rights movement with care and intimacy, unlike others who arrived at a pivotal moment and left once they got the shot.”

Museum CEO Susan Abrams adds, “To some, Steve Schapiro is as much an icon as those he photographed, and we are fortunate to have him as a partner for this compelling exhibition. Visitors will be transported into the lives of the principal protagonists of the 20th century.”

Schapiro picked up a camera at age nine, focusing on his working-class neighbors in the Bronx. In college, he planned to be a writer but soon realized that storytelling with a camera could be just as powerful as storytelling with a typewriter. Early on, he studied with W. Eugene Smith, who revolutionized the photographic essay with a humanistic approach to his subjects.

This ethos of intimacy informs all of Schapiro’s images, starting with his earliest work as a photojournalist in 1961. His prolific output also includes portraits of the most influential celebrities of our time, ranging from Muhammad Ali to David Bowie, from Truman Capote to Barbra Streisand – all of whom appear in the exhibition. Schapiro has always had an undeniable penchant for conveying something unexpected, even in those we

think we know well.

Activists and Icons: The Photographs of Steve Schapiro exemplifies Illinois Holocaust Museum’s call to action: “Take History to Heart. Take a Stand for Humanity.” Schapiro’s subjects have done that, as has the photographer, by using his powerful imagery to tell stories through the human face.

Illinois Holocaust Museum, founded by Holocaust survivors, is dedicated to giving voice to human experience. Its permanent Karkomi Holocaust Exhibition is populated with personal narratives - in videos, photographs, objects, and documents - of those who lived the experience. The courage of their truth-telling fuels the Museum’s mission. In its active schedule of special exhibitions, including Activists and Icons, the Museum illuminates other moments of crisis worldwide and calls upon its visitors to become Upstanders by suggesting ways to take action.

Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 5 minutes Total Time: 20 minutes Makes: 12 servings Ingredients: 8 cups air-popped or stovetop popcorn 4 cups mini pretzel twists ¼ cup butter ½ cup packed brown sugar 2 Tbsp corn syrup 1 cup marshmallows ¼ tsp salt 2 cups mini chocolate peanut butter cups 1 cup candy corn Instructions: 1. Toss popcorn with pretzel twists; spread out on large parchment paper-lined baking sheet; set aside.

2. In saucepan set over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar and corn syrup; cook, swirling pan, for 3 to 5 minutes or until brown sugar dissolves and mixture is bubbling.

3. Stir in marshmallows and salt; cook for 30 to 60 seconds or until marshmallows are melted.

Pour evenly over popcorn mixture. Sprinkle with mini chocolate peanut butter cups and candy corn. Let cool completely and break into clusters.
