ROCK THE VOTE LAUNCHES DEMOCRACY CLASS TO EDUCATE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF VOTING, REGISTERING TO VOTE With the midterm elections not too far away, Rock the Vote, the 28-year-old nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging and building the political power of young people, has launched Democracy Class.

Democracy Class is being taught in over 2,000 schools across the country and is a high school curriculum on the history and importance of voting. The class culminates in registering and pre-registering students to vote.

Rock the Vote partnered with Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), to update and expand the Democracy Class curriculum, which was originally created in 2010. Rock the Vote is also working with the SPLC to mobilize its network of more than 400,000 teachers. The new curriculum includes additional lessons that cover the subjects of modern-day voting rights, how local elections relate to issues impacting their community, and the importance of civic participation. The Democracy Class initiative is being sponsored by American Eagle.

(NextLevel Health), a Medicaid managed care health plan celebrating four years of service for Cook County residents, recently hosted a free Complete Health Festival in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood that featured local community behavioral, mental health and primary care providers in addition to social service organizations. The event, which took place in Hamilton Park, 513 W. 72nd St. from 11 am to 3 pm, sought to raise awareness about the concept of Complete Health, highlighting holistic wellness education and resources that exist in the Englewood community.

FIRST-EVER GOVERNOR’S SUMMIT SHOWCASES BEST PRACTICES, URGES EXPANSION Hundreds of business and workforce leaders recently met with Gov. Bruce Rauner, Illinois education officials and state agency representatives for a first-ever Governor’s Summit highlighting work-based learning initiatives statewide. Rauner who hosted the summit, entitled WORK LEARN GROW: Pathways to the Jobs of Illinois’ Future, spoke about Internships, apprenticeships and other work-based learning programs that provide Illinoisans with the hands-on training and that lead to a steady flow of skilled, ready workers for businesses.

“The importance of efforts on this front cannot be overemphasized. I applaud the leaders whose successful programs are being featured today, and I implore everyone to continue to expand this great work,” said Rauner.

The summit, held at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, is one result of a $80,000 grant awarded to Illinois by the National Governors Association to expand work-based learning programs. In addition, a new website was launched to provide K-12, higher education and adult learners and employers with streamlined information and resources at https://www2.illinois.gov/ sites/wlg/Pages/default.aspx.

The Blue Island/Robbins Neighborhood Network recently held their first job fair for the community. There were over 50 employers present from the surrounding area and over 100 potential employees attended the event. The Job Fair was hosted to help local residents access employment opportunities that would be closer to home and improve their quality of life.

The Blue Island/Robbins Neighborhood Network is part of the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and brings together community members and stakeholders, like schools, businesses, churches, and hospitals, to develop a strategic plan that addresses community issues and how to solve them.

“The job fair is just one other way that we were able to, as a network of notfor-profits, partner with the business community to help provide resources to the residents of Blue Island and Robbins.

That was our big goal, to partner with the business community and this job fair was a

great way to do that,” said Kentric Benson, project coordinator for the Blue Island/ Robbins Neighborhood Network.

There were about 50 employers present at the Job Fair and over 150 potential employees attended the event, according to Benson. Local businesses like the Robbins Action Committee and Beggars Pizza were present with available jobs as well as large companies with local opportunities like Allied Universal, Target, and Walmart.

“We reached out to some of the employers right here in the community like people who own restaurants, people who own bars, people who have some entry-level jobs, and we had a few of them actually set up interviews. A lot of the other jobs were in the surrounding south suburban areas,” said Benson.

It was important for the Blue Island/ Robbins Neighborhood Network to create a job fair that showcased employment opportunities in the community and the nearby neighborhoods to help residents become employed in a way that would be sustainable for them.

“The one thing that we found, especially in these two suburban communities, is that a lot of people go out of the community and into the city of Chicago or into the western suburbs to work. We tried to invite employers who were in the surrounding suburbs like Walmart in Country Club Hills, someplace close where people can actually get to work versus having to take a couple of buses and a train to be able to get to work,” said Benson.

For people who weren’t able to attend the Job Fair, there are still employment opportunities available. The Blue Island/ Robbins Neighborhood Network hosts an online job board that is updated weekly.

“We have a job board on our website and every week we post jobs and we try to keep it updated at least every other week.

People who missed the job fair can go there and they can still find job opportunities that they can reach out to,” said Benson. “We told all the employers that came out to let us know when they have openings.”

Blue Wave Democratic Dinner Host State and Local Democratic Officials

The Rich Township Democratic Organization recently held their Annual Democratic Dinner at the Idlewild Country Club in Flossmoor. This year’s theme was Join the Blue Wave and featured special guests like J.B. Pritzker, Democratic Candidate for Governor, and Senator Toi Hutchinson, 40th District of Illinois.

“Normally if we have an event in the fall it's been small but this time we decided to raise the bar,” said Calvin Jordan, Rich Township Democratic committeeman.

The Rich Township Democratic Organization supports the principals of the Democratic Party and the Constitution of the United States while also encouraging Rich Township residents to become more involved in the Democratic process through voting. Rich Township is part of Chicago’s South Suburban community and includes all or part of Country Club Hills, Flossmoor, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Matteson, Olympia Fields, Park Forest, Richton Park, and Tinley Park.

What the Rich Township Democratic organization, and Calvin as committeeman, try to do is connect with local, state, and national Democratic officials and candidates to bring them into the region and help to educate the community on their platforms as well as hear from the community about their concerns.

“What I try to do is get ahold of the people who are running to let them know that Rich Township exists so that they can come out and have a chance to give their spiel. I've

been working with J.B. Pritzker since the start of his campaign and he's come out several times and talked to various different groups,” said Jordan.

Special guest speakers at the Democratic Dinner included J.B. Pritzker, the Democratic candidate for governor, and Illinois State Senator Toi Hutchinson who gave the Keynote speech. Jordan said that it’s not always easy getting democratic representatives to come out and speak to members of the Rich Township community but it is always worth the effort.

“Since I've been committeeman, we've invited several people out to speak about what they do and how it relates to the area,” said Jordan. “We work closely with all the municipalities and try to get people to have a dialogue about what's going on and understanding what each elected official does which is really important.”

As a result of the event, several people expressed their interest in getting more involved in democratic efforts in their communities which Jordan said he is elated about.

“We had a lot of people come out and express an interest in getting involved and what we're in the process is doing now is just trying to make sure everyone is registered to vote, and then at the same time encourage them to get their neighbors and other people to come out and actually vote. That's the biggest problem that we've got, I run into people all the time that say they don’t know when the election is,” said Jordan.

The Mask Behind the Mask Photographs by David Hauptschein at South Suburban’s Photo Four Gallery The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College recently announced a special guest artist exhibition titled The Mask Behind the Mask, Photographs by David Hauptschein, in the Photo Four Gallery from now through its closing reception on October 24th at 12:30 p.m. The Photo Four Gallery is located in Room 4338 on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus.

Hauptschein is currently working on several series of photo-based digital paintings.

Selections from Never Before Seen and The Mask Behind the Mask were exhibited at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago in 2016. Additionally, Hauptschein is an award-winning playwright, director, and producer. He also created an award-winning experimental animated short film entitled Fecundation.

SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge.

Illinois K-12 High-Speed Internet Connectivity Rises to 96% Gov. Bruce Rauner recently announced that 96 percent of K-12 school districts in Illinois can access the internet at speeds of 100 kbps per student, a substantial improvement from 71 percent just three years ago.

Median bandwidths also have markedly improved, increasing 2.5 times since 2015.

High-speed connectivity ensures that students have access to more digital resources, which in turn expands learning opportunities. By making high-speed internet accessible, educators and students gain the benefits of greater interactivity, collaboration, engagement and personal instruction.

There also are 136 school campuses that lack scalable fiber-optic broadband connections.

The Illinois Classroom Connectivity Initiative, launched by the Rauner administration in 2016, is an effort to ensure that all districts receive the support and funding to close this

school broadband gap. The FY19 education budget includes a $17 million Broadband Expansion fund to help cover costs of fiber upgrades for school districts. There is also provision for free technical assistance.

Managing Your Mental Health With Or Without Insurance Coverage ered.

(NAPSI)—Mental health is synonymous with mental wellness. At some point many people will struggle with their mental health. Just like caring for physical health occasionally requires a visit with a physician, caring for mental health may require visiting a mental health professional and, of course, figuring out a way to pay for it.

Insurance Coverage and Payment Options When a person is unable to manage daily activities such as maintaining fulfilling relationships, working productively, coping with the stresses of life, or even recognizing one’s own potential, he or she may be struggling to stay mentally healthy—whether he or she is able to recognize it or not.

If a person has health insurance, it may be helpful to consult with a primary care doctor who could make referrals to local services. When individuals do not have a primary care doctor, they can also use their insurer’s website or call center to locate mental health professionals for treatment.

• Individuals who have insurance through an employer should check the Summary of Benefits and Coverage for information on covered mental health and behavioral services. The Transamerica Center for Health Studies (TCHS) Consumer Healthcare Survey found that 54 percent of respondents have access to employer-sponsored programs for mental health or substance abuse, but only 21 percent of employees were enrolled in these programs.

• The Affordable Care Act requires health insurance purchased through the state Exchange to cover mental health, substance use disorder services and behavioral treatment for current or pre-existing conditions.

• Poor access to and treatment for mental health can be debilitating for veterans. VA Care is provided at government-owned facilities for veterans only, while TRICARE is the government-provided insurance plan for active-duty or retired service members (and their dependents) at private and public facilities, or military health clinics and hospitals. The VA also offers Service-Connected Disability Compensation, which provides a tax-free monthly benefit for veterans who are at least 10 percent disabled because of injuries or diseases that were incurred in or aggravated during active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty training.

• Medicare is a government-funded program that covers almost every senior citizen in the United States. Medicare Part B covers a free yearly depression screening, mental health counseling or therapy visits, as well as outpatient services such as individual and group psychotherapy. The costs and drugs covered with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan will vary by plan, but almost all drugs classified as antidepressants, antipsychotics and anticonvulsants are required to be cov-

Options for the Uninsured According to a 2017 report from Mental Health America, more than 7.5 million people with a mental illness are uninsured. Paying for mental health services without insurance can be costly, but there are some options available, including: • Medicaid—A joint federal and state program that provides free or low-cost health coverage for disabled persons, low-income adults, and pregnant women. Every state implements its own guidelines, so coverage may vary. For years, Medicaid has been the largest payer of mental health-related services in the United States.

• Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)—In 2017, an estimated 9.4 million children were covered under CHIP, funded jointly by states and the federal government for uninsured children up to age 19. Like Medicaid, CHIP guidelines are also implemented by each state, so eligibility for coverage may vary.

In addition, there are many facilities and centers that provide services for those with mental health and or substance use disorder needs at a lower cost or work within a patient’s insurance policy: • Mental Health America affiliate locations are nonprofit organizations found in 41 states that help patients navigate the mental health system, providing education, support services and rehabilitation services.

• The Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration features a behavioral health treatment facilities locator where you can specify the kind of behavioral health services you are looking for, your insurance type (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) and payment ability (e.g., sliding scale fee, cash, etc.).

• With more than 1,000 National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) affiliate locations and state organizations, NAMI lists free resources and educational programs.

• Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics receive Medicaid reimbursement for their mental health and substance use disorder services, including 24-hour crisis care coordination, evidencebased practices and integrated physical care. These facilities are currently available in eight states: Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States.

More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women.

Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer.

To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices.

• Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program

Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs.

The NIDDK updated the Sisters Together program guide to include: • Recent data regarding African American obesity rates • Evidence-based strategies to promote regular physical activity and healthy food choices among black women • Highlights from Sisters Together programs developed by different groups around the country • Tips to create a budget to fund a program • Information on how to grow and manage program interest using social media

Sequence Ch!cago Returns to Navy Pier with Talented Lineup of Local Artists

or the second consecutive year, Navy Pier is welcoming the fall/winter season with Sequence Ch!cago, a free dynamic performance series that features local artists, musicians and cultural organizations by showcasing their works across the Pier’s various unique platforms.

Over the course of 10 dates between Now and December 19, Sequence Ch!cago will spotlight talented performers from across the city who have inspired and influenced Chicago’s diverse arts scene. Supported by a grant from the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the music performances are free and open to the public.

Still Point Theatre Collective Celebrates 25th Anniversary On Oct. 21 2018, Still Point Theatre Collective will celebrate 25 years of existence using theater to raise consciousness on issues of peace and social justice and to celebrate the beauty and resilience of the human spirit. Acclaimed international poet, theologian, writer and artist Edwina Gateley will deliver keynote speech. The event will take place from 3.00 pm-6.00 pm at Ravenswood Presbyterian Church (4300 N Hermitage Ave, Chicago, IL 60613).

Still Point Theatre Collective is a dynamic community of Chicago-based artists who use theatre to uplift, inform and inspire, and make a difference in the lives of underrepresented individuals. It was founded by actress, poet and social

activist Lisa Wagner-Carollo in 1993. Still Point serves the community through two main branches of programming: producing original professional plays, and providing arts outreach programs to marginalized communities. These communities include developmentally diverse adults, currently and formerly incarcerated women, and senior citizens.

Edwina Gateley is a poet, theologian, writer, artist and lay minister from Lancaster, England. Her life has been described by Publisher’s Weekly as “fascinating – an exceptional blend of contemplation and action”. Her journey has led her to teaching in Africa, founding the Volunteer Missionary Movement (VMM), sojourning in the Sahara Desert,
