US HEALTH OFFICIALS URGE INFLUENZA AND PNEUMOCOCCAL DISEASE VACCINATION New data released recently by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) revealed that only 52 percent of US adults plan to get vaccinated against influenza (flu) this season. Representatives from NFID and other leading public health and medical organizations urged the public and healthcare professionals to follow the CDC recommendation for everyone age 6 months and older to get vaccinated against flu annually.

“Many people underestimate the severity of flu, yet we know flu causes hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States,” said Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex M. PRECKWINKLE REAFFIRMS COOK COUNTY’S COMMITMENT TO PROTECTING IMMIGRANTS AMID LOCAL ICE RAIDS Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently affirmed Cook County’s commitment to protecting immigrant communities, following reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detaining residents recently. In 2007, Cook County declared itself a Fair and Equal County for Immigrants. The series of raids in the region follows the U.S. ICE press briefing claiming that sanctuary policies threaten public safety and local jurisdictions are complicit in crimes committed by immigrants.

According to a press release, Cook County cooperates with other government entities to the extent required and permitted by applicable law, but in the absence of a criminal warrant, does not detain anyone, regardless of their immigration status, after a judge determines that he or she should be released. To do otherwise would subject the County to liability for unlawful detention and infringe upon that individual’s rights, the press release further stated.

During a recent South Suburban College Board Meeting, Dr. Ron Kawanna, associate vice president of accreditation and institutional effectiveness at South Suburban College, announced to the Board of Trustees that the college has once again received a 10-year accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission.

The Higher Learning Commission was founded in 1895 as one of six regional accreditors in the United States. The organization accredits post-secondary education institutions in the north-central region of the country, including Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and several other surrounding states. The goal of doing this work is to help assure the quality of higher learning in the region and across the country.

South Suburban College recently received 10-year accreditation which is the top accreditation that the Higher Learning Commission gives and will last for 10

years before South Suburban College is reviewed again for accreditation.

“The 10-year reaccreditation is a testament to the high level of professionalism of everyone at the college,” said Chairman Frank M. Zuccarelli. “Everyone came together and worked hard during the selfstudy process, and I congratulate you.”

In order to receive accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, an institution must have a clear and public mission that guides operations. The institution must act with integrity and conduct itself in an ethical and responsible way. The institution should also provide high-quality education and take responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments, and support services. The institution must have resources, structures, and processes in place to ensure its mission is fulfilled and that the quality of its educational offerings are constantly improving. Lastly, the institution must have plans for the future, according to

information provided by the Higher Learning Commission.

“It is with much enthusiasm that we announce our reaccreditation success,” said Dr. Lynette D. Stokes, president of South Suburban College. “A big thank you to faculty, staff and administrators who worked tirelessly to write the Higher Learning Commission report and provide evidence of compliance, and special thank you to our students for participating in the open forum and focus group session. We appreciate their candid conversations and recommendations of how to move South Suburban College closer to becoming the premier institution of higher learning in the Southland community.”

South Suburban College will remain accredited by the Higher Learning Commission through 2028 and at that time they will be asked to submit another report to the Higher Learning Commission to maintain accreditation.

Emerging Young Artist Tours Chicago’s Suburbs, Performs For South Suburban Students

Students at Crete-Monee High School recently received a performance from a 19-yearold emerging singer from Atlanta known by her stage name, MicahBlu. MicahBlu has been performing for most of her life and always hits the stage with various shades of blue in her outfit, her hair and her makeup.

The performance at CreteMonee was part of the sold-out High School Nation Tour which brought MicahBlu to several high schools in Chicago’s surrounding suburbs over the course of two weeks.

“The most important part of who I am is that I’m a singer and that’s like everything to me. I literally sing ‘Hello’ when I meet people. I’m all about positivity and loving yourself and loving yourself enough to love other people around you,” said MicahBlu. Breaking into the music industry didn’t happen overnight for MicahBlu and when it comes to making music and keeping her positive attitude, she said it can be challenging at times.

“To break into the music industry is actually really hard.

default mode, you can just get lost. I think you should always live in the present and notice everything you’re doing, notice your surroundings, and just stay positive.”

This positivity is woven into MicahBlu’s music and she said that she loves sharing her pos-

itivity with a younger audience which made her recent high school tour a great fit.

“A tour like this is exactly what I love because I feel like it’s like my demographic and it’s just really fun and full of energy. I feel like I relate the most to the high school audience that I’m performing to now on this tour,” said MicahBlu. “I hope that when young people listen to my music it’s good enough to make them forget about any problem they’re going through or anything that’s going on in the world. That’s my goal.”

During the tour, MicahBlu would arrive early and stay late before and after the performances to meet with students.

She said that in doing the High School Nation Tour in the suburbs of Chicago, she not only garnered thousands of new social media follows but she also heard from students that they were inspired by her music.

Why is Suicide a Growing Problem in the Black Community?

It’s no secret that African Americans – particularly teens – are committing suicide at record levels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide rates have increased by 30 percent since 1999 and nearly 45,000 lives were lost to suicide in 2016 alone.

A June 2019 study conducted by the Journal of Community Health revealed that suicide deaths among black females aged 13 to 19 rose 182 percent between 2001 and 2017, while the rate among black teen males rose 60 percent during that same period.

From 2015 to 2017, 52 percent of black teen males who died from suicide used firearms, a method with a fatality rate of nearly 90 percent.

Another 34 percent used strangulation or suffocation, which has a fatality rate of about 60 percent.

Among the 204 black teen females who died by suicide from 2015 to 2017, 56 percent used strangulation or suffocation and 21 percent used firearms, according to the study.

Experts and others have tried to determine why African Americans increasingly are choosing to end their lives. Theories have run the gamut – from the lack of strong father-figures to racism and social media and even the increase in black wealth.

Whatever the reason, the CDC said it’s important to note that suicidal thoughts or behaviors are both damaging and dangerous and should be treated as a psychiatric emergency.

CDC officials also caution that those who have suicidal thoughts should understand that it doesn’t make one weak or flawed.

“Why are we killing ourselves? The lack of treatment of mental illness is the key factor to why suicide is on the rise in the black community,” said Clarence McFerren, a mental health advocate and author who admits to previously having suicidal thoughts as a teenager.

“Throughout my life, I’ve been faced with difficult situations which festered into five mental illness diagnosis – ADHD, PTSD, severe depression, bipolar tendencies and anxieties – and I did not understand what was going on until I took the steps to get help,” McFerren said.

Famed Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist and author, Dr. Fran Walfish said she’s treated hundreds of thousands of children and teens each year and recently she’s seen the number of troubled teenagers who are cutters and dealing with suicidal thoughts, feelings, ideas, plans, and even attempts of suicide.

“There is nothing glamourous about suicide.

The one common-denominator shared by all who cut, contemplate or attempt suicide is that they feel emotionally alone in their families,” said Walfish, the author of “The Self-Aware Parent,” and who appears regularly as an expert child psychologist on the CBS Television series, “The Doctors.”

“They feel there is no one person they can talk to about their pain who will listen, validate, understand, and be a safe warmly attuned place for comfort,” she said.

“While suicide is a complicated topic, it’s clear that the rise of social media is one of the main causes of the recent jump in suicide rates,” Gertsmann said.

“Social media show users pictures and videos of everyone living better lives than they are; even though these pictures are often staged and paint an inaccurate picture, the brain isn’t able to differentiate and simply sees that everyone else is better off,” he said.

“Social media also puts numbers on your popularity – your followers, your likes, your replies.

And, no matter how many you have, you’ll always want more,” Gertsmann said.

Kevin Darné, the author of “My Cat Won’t Bark! (A Relationship Epiphany), believes that the suicide rate among young African Americans is due to the growing list of black

millionaires and billionaires.

“Today, we have Oprah owning a TV network, Tyler Perry owning his own studios, Shonda Rhimes owning her night of television on ABC, Jaz-Z becoming a billionaire, Dr. Dre selling ‘Beats’ to Apple for $3 billion, and a few Fortune 500 black CEOs, black doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs,” Darné said.

“Although racism is still alive, it’s impossible to deny the fact that the rise of a black upper middle class and an increase in black millionaires [contributes to others having lower self-esteem],” he said.

“The irony is the more black success that someone sees in various industries could make a person start to wonder about what’s wrong with themselves. Depression and lack of fulfillment can cause people in a rich country to consider suicide … when there’s a huge gap between one’s expectations and their reality, life can seem miserable,” Darné said.

LGBTQI+ Latinx people don’t receive culturally competent cancer prevention and treatment Most Latinx people who are LGBTQI+ reported being reluctant to share their gender identity and/or sexual orientation with a health care provider, and a majority have never received cancer information tailored for their community, according to City of Hope-led survey results which where presented at an American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting held on Sept. 20-23.

LGBTQI+ individuals are at higher risk of developing cervical and oral cancers, and Latinx people have higher risk of developing viral-associated cancers, including in the liver and stomach. Yet substantial cancer health disparities exist for both LGBTQI+ individuals and for Latinx people, said Mayra Serrano, M.P.H.,

CHES, manager of the Center of Community Alliance for Research & Education at City of Hope, a world-renowned independent research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases.

“Together, this group is a double minority whose increased risk for certain cancers, unfortunately, are not currently being addressed,” said Serrano, who led the ongoing survey project. “We hope that our survey results add to a conversation that needs to be had about how people - regardless of their gender, sexuality, race or ethnicity - should receive equal and appropriate health treatment and disease prevention education.”

Working with the Latinx Task

Force in the Greater Los Angeles area, Serrano and her colleagues aim to reduce health disparities. The goal is to understand cancer-related knowledge and behavior within the LGBTQI+ Latinx community.

Examples of a lack of cultural competency occur when, say, a health care provider uses inappropriate gender pronouns in conversation or in written materials, or when the physician and support staff assume that the patient is cisgender (they agree with the sex assigned at birth) and heterosexual during discussions about sex and the need for birth control.

“Results will guide future outreach to and education efforts for the LGBTQI+ Latinx community and www.thechicagocitizen.com

their health care providers,” Serrano said. “We need to better meet the needs of underserved populations.”

Some 176 people completed the survey as of June 2019. Most (74%) identified as Latinx, 82% identified as cisgender, 40% identified as gay, 28% identified as queer. Some shared their gender identity or sexual orientation with providers (44%), but those who identified as bisexual were less likely to share that information.

Most respondents (73%) said they were afraid to share their gender identity and/or sexual orientation with health care providers. People who identified as queer were more likely to be reticent about sharing their sexual orientation.

“The early data suggest that there

is an urgent need to train health care providers how to make their practice more culturally competent, safe and welcoming for LGBTQI+ Latinx communities,” Serrano said.

Key responses include: l 91% of respondents said they have never received LGBTQI-tailored cancer information l 60% of respondents ages 21 to 29 who were eligible for Pap testing had not been tested in the past three years, compared with 22% of all eligible individuals in the United States l 50% of those eligible for a mammogram had not had one in the past two years, compared with 29% of all eligible individuals in the United States.

Unemployment Rate Falls to Historic Low in August The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) recently announced that the unemployment rate was 4.0 percent in August, down 0.2 percentage point from the prior month, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The August unemployment rate was the lowest monthly unemployment rate for the state on record. Nonfarm payrolls were stable compared to the prior month, down -1,400 jobs. The July monthly change in payrolls was revised from the preliminary report (from -400 to +1,300 jobs).

The state’s unemployment rate is +0.3 percentage points higher than the national unemployment rate reported for August 2019, which was 3.7 percent and unchanged from the previous month. The Illinois unemployment rate was down -0.2 percentage point from a year ago when it was 4.2 percent.

Illinois payroll employment has shown variability since the beginning of the year, as have national payrolls.

Average payroll employment growth in Illinois during the June to August three-month period, which provides a more stable measure of payroll employment change, was +2,500 jobs, with the largest gains in Educational and Health Services (+900), Government (+900) and Financial Activities (+700).

The number of unemployed workers decreased from the prior month, -3.7 percent to 262,500, a record low, and was down -4.0 percent over the same month for the prior year. The labor force was up +0.1 percentage point over-the-month and +0.7 percentage point over-the-year.

Does Your Child or Teen Experience Migraines? What to Know StatePoint - The pain and symptoms that accompany migraines can be debilitating. For children and teens, it can mean missed school days, absence from social or sporting events and activities at home.

To evaluate migraine treatment in children and teens, new guidelines from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Headache Society looked at two areas: acute treatments to stop or lessen pain and other symptoms during a migraine, and treatments to prevent or reduce how often migraine attacks occur.

“The good news is that there are effective treatments for children and teens for migraine attacks when they occur,” says guidelines lead author, Dr. Maryam Oskoui, McGill University, and an AAN fellow.

Based on the guidelines, families dealing with pediatric migraines should consider the following: • Clinicians make a migraine diagnosis based on the intensity and duration of pain, how many attacks a person has had, and whether they’re accompanied by associated

Many of these issues can be addressed with healthy habits, like nutritious foods, regular exercise, adequate hydration and sleep.

• Ask your child’s neurologist about the risks and benefits of preventive medication and appropriate acute treatment. For example, in studies, the drug amitriptyline combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) -- which employs techniques like relaxation and coping strategies -- was more beneficial than amitriptyline combined with headache education in reducing migraine attack frequency and migraine-related disability.

However, it’s important to note that amitriptyline may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior.

“The benefit of CBT alone or in combination with other treatments in migraine prevention warrants further study,” says Dr. Oskoui.

• Treat migraines as soon as your

child or teen becomes aware of one starting. For children and teens, medications such as ibuprofen and triptans can help relieve pain during an attack. For teens, consider the combination sumatriptan/naproxen.

• Families and neurologists should carefully weigh the use of treatments not proven to be effective in children and teens. For example, while botulinum toxin is effective in preventing migraine in adults, it hasn’t shown the same effectiveness in children and teens. And while some of the newest treatments, including calcitonin gene-related peptide antibodies and other similar drugs and devices are effective for adults, the study of their pediatric use is only beginning.

UNSUNG LIVE’ Screenings Explore Chicago’s Music Roots at Ellis Park As part of its ‘We Bring You Bronzeville’ series for the Chicago Park District’s ‘Night Out in the Parks’ programs, the Chicago Blues Museum is presenting an evening of screenings of Unsung Live at Ellis Park, featuring shows on The Chi-Lites, Minnie Riperton, Johnnie Taylor, and a special Tribute to Jackie Wilson with rare performance footage, celebrating his posthumous Award of a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame earlier this month.

Unsung is a critically acclaimed award winning music documentary series which uncovers the stories behind some of the top, most critically influential R&B and Soul artists of the last several decades, including musicians and entertainers from or connected to Bronzeville.

The Chi-Lites, one of Chicago’s all-time greatest soul vocal group, and best known for their two chart-topping R&B smashes, ‘Oh Girl’ and ‘Have You Seen Her’, had their first professional gig on stage of the Indiana Theater on 47th Street in Bronzeville and their very first recording contract with the tiny 47th Street Daran label.

Minnie Riperton grew up in Bronzeville, in her teen years sang the lead for the Chicago-based girl group the Gems, and later through early affiliation with Chess Records backup for various artists such as Etta James, Fontella Bass, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters.

Johnnie Taylor’s connection to Chicago was Sam Cooke: Johnnie was part of the gospel group Highway QCs, founded by a young Sam Cooke, and with his singing then so strikingly close to Cooke, later replaced Cooke in the gospel group, the Soul Stirrers. A few years later, Taylor signed on as one of the first acts on Cooke’s independent SAR Records label.

The early hits of Jackie Wilson, the electrifying on-stage showman and consistent hitmaker from the mid-’50s to early ‘70s, helped set the stage both

for ‘60s soul and for Berry Gordy’s success with Motown. Teamed up with Chicago soul producer Carl Davis on Brunswick, who had been instrumental in the success of Chicago Soul, Wilson maintained his pop stardom with regular horn-heavy hit singles, according to a press release.

The program starts at 5pm. with music and viewing of the Unsung Bronzeville—Pioneers of Black Music, a Chicago Blues Museum exhibit currently installed at the Ellis Park Center, and the screenings to commence at 5:30pm.

Unsung Bronzeville—Pioneers of Black Music provides a glimpse into the Chicago’s Blues, R&B and Soul music scene of the 1940s to 1970s, with its early beginnings in Bronzeville, through selected photographic images of Chicago musicians, entertainers, and performers, as well as places and venues where this popular music originated and evolved.

“This is an opportunity to educate our patrons and the public about the music’s social and cultural impact.

These musical genres are significant to our city’s identity and culture, which is why We Bring You Bronzeville is so important,” says Monique Scott, supervisor of the Ellis Park facility.

“The Chicago Blues Museum is pleased to present Unsung Live at Ellis Park to share with the community,” said Gregg Parker, who founded the Chicago Blues Museum in 1991. “Bronzeville with its rich musical and cultural legacy has been the heart of Chicago’s AfricanAmerican community for a century, I grew up in this neighborhood, as did Sam Cooke and many others.”

Nature-based Program For The Entire Family Returns

The Chicago Park District and Lincoln Park Zoo recently announced the return of Family Nature Days, an interactive, nature-based program for the entire family. Lincoln Park Zoo will host the nature play series at Chicago parks across the city, through November 2.

Park locations include Kilbourn Park and Welles Park. All of the pop-up nature play dates are admission free. One of the nature play series was recently held at Palmisano Park.

How Schools are Changing to Improve STEAM Learning (StatePoint) As STEAM learning has grown in prominence in classrooms across the country, so has the role of tools and resources facilitating this approach to learning.
