CHICAGOANS ‘IMAGINE THE FUTURE’ WITH A SEASON OF SCIENCE FICTION THEMED PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE CITY Mayor Emanuel and Chicago Public Library (CPL) recently announced that Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick will be the 29th selection of CPL’s One Book, One Chicago (OBOC).

From October 2018 through April 2019, Chicagoans will learn more about science fiction, technology, future societies, artificial intelligence and more as they explore the book and this year’s theme - Imagine the Future. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was first published in 1968, introduces readers to protagonist Rick Deckard in the year 2021 as he maneuvers his way through the new world order. This iconic book was the inspiration for the blockbuster film Blade Runner.

CPL will join community partners to offer Chicagoans a variety of events and programs, including walking tours, art exhibits, discussions, music performances and more, to bring people, businesses and civic agencies together to engage with the book and theme. PLANNING FOR HEALTHY TREES STARTS NOW Through its Recover, Replant, Restore! program, Trees Forever is working with communities in Illinois to grow healthy urban forests and to help residents plant trees that are more resistant to natural disasters and man-made disasters, such as emerald ash borer (EAB). Fall is an excellent time to plant trees, so now is the time to start planning.

It is also important to select species that are resistant to storm damage. While no tree can survive a direct hit from devastating storms, some species are a little more resistant to wind, flooding and ice. SALES TAX GUIDANCE AVAILABLE FOR OUT-OF-STATE SELLERS The Illinois Department of Revenue is announcing online resources for remote (out-of-state) sellers seeking to determine whether they must begin collecting and remitting Illinois sales tax beginning Oct. 1, 2018.

The guidance is a result of the enactment of Illinois Public Act 100-587 and the subsequent U.S. Supreme Court decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. Illinois Public Act 100-587 requires remote sellers who have sold either cumulative gross receipts from Illinois sales of $100,000 or more, or 200 or more separate Illinois transactions to register and remit Illinois Use Tax for sales made on or after October 1, 2018. The Career Development and Job Center at South Suburban College (SSC), 15800 State St. in South Holland, recently launched Workshop Wednesday’s which are being held every Wednesday during the fall semester at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. Students and community members are invited to attend the short 30-minute workshops to get a quick bit of advice on a number of career-related topics.

Workshop Wednesdays are an opportunity to get career information such as resume writing, creating cover letters, how to dress for success, and more through a short 20-30 minute podcast and demonstrative workshop.

“This is an idea to be able to draw people back into the career center. I started here in June and upon my arrival, I found out that there was not a full-time person there so it really is incumbent upon me to create some opportunities and to involve our student work-

ers in our process as well,” said Anissa Jones, dean of student development at SSC. Each week, workshops will focus on a different subject and participants will first listen to a three to five-minute podcast provided by the College Career Service Central software that the SSC Career Development and Job Center has in their office. After listening, student workers will discuss and demonstrate the information that was given in the podcast.

“The idea is to listen to the podcasts and then do a demonstrative workshop behind it. So, if the podcast was about dressing for success we would have one student dressed appropriately for interviews and one dressed inappropriately to demonstrate that. If it’s resume writing, maybe they’ll listen to that podcast and then we will go through and critique a resume for them or help them to create one on the software we have,” said Jones.

Students can find a wealth of information to help them as they explore their possibilities, whether that be more schooling or entering the

workforce after finishing at SSC, but the Career Development and Job Center’s Workshop Wednesdays are also a great resource for all members of the community who are seeking to improve their employment opportunities.

“From here, students are supposed to be transitioning into either their transfer to a four-year college or making their transition to a career. The idea is that we are here to help them to transition into the next phase, whatever that looks like. Our services are also open for our community to come in and read our books, check our bulletin boards, and things of that nature to see any jobs that have come through,” said Jones.

The Workshop Wednesdays are new, but Jones said she is looking forward to working with the different academic programs at SSC to further tailor the career information and make it even more relevant for the needs of specific students and programs.

EXCLUSIVE Former GOP Chair Steele Says He Knows Identity of Op-Ed Writer

Former Republican Party National Chairman Michael Steele goes on the record with NNPA Newswire and it turns out there are more resisters inside the White House – a high-level group of Republican resisters to President Donald Trump, not a single individual, but a large and still growing group.

In an NNPA Newswire exclusive, Steele said the damning New York Times op-ed by a senior Trump administration official was likely written by a team of the president’s trusted hierarchy and it’s a clear signal that America is now witnessing a White House in utter chaos.

Steele, who served as party chair from 2009 to 2011, said Trump has devastated the party and has led Republicans to the brink of a midterm that could see a blue wave from sea to shining sea.

“I think the midterms are going to be a correction election.

Voters will correct what they see in government not being about the people’s business or government that’s more caught up in Donald Trump,” Steele said.

“The voters may take the House from the Republicans in order to wake them up,” he said.

“Yeah, I would say Jeff should be investigating who the author of this piece was because I really believe it’s national security,” Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One. Trump has called the author “gutless” and a “coward” and the White House reportedly has a list of 12 people whom they believe could be the author of the piece which claimed there’s a “resistance” within the administration.

Steele said he believes he knows the identity of the author – or, rather he said, authors.

“In many senses, it’s a cry for help, an acknowledgment within Trump’s White House that, as the saying goes, ‘Houston, we have a problem,’” Steele said.

However, unlike so many

others who believe it’s the work of one senior official, Steele said he thinks more than one staffer is behind the damning article.

“It’s my take that this isn’t the hand of or the handprint of one individual,” he said. “I’ve read that and I can hear a lot of different voices that I know personally.”

He compared the matter to a group of employees all of whom are upset with the boss.

“No individual will want to go to the boss or go public, so they sit there talking and they write a letter together and give it to one person to take it – in this case to the press,” Steele said.

“That letter reflects the views and concerns of many individuals inside the White House.”

As to why he wouldn’t reveal the identities, Steele likened it to journalists who maintain anonymous sources. “You have contacts and I have contacts,” Steele said.

“My contacts tell me a lot of things that was inspired in the books by Michael Wolf, Omarosa Manigult Newman and Bob Woodward,” he said of the authors of recent books that paint the president as unhinged and out of control.

Wolf said he couldn’t relate to those like Sen. Ted Cruz supporting Trump because of the nasty attacks the president made against Cruz and his family

during the 2016 campaign.

“I’m sorry, no election is worth my dignity,” he said. “When I wake up in the morning and look in the mirror for a shave, I want to like the guy that’s looking back at me from the mirror. Ted Cruz is in a battle for his political life when he really should be walking away with this election.”

Steele said he believes the Republican Party has lost its soul.

He said it was once the party that supported and advocated for Civil Rights and Voting Rights, but now the GOP has become infamous for demeaning and racist statements like referring to certain places as “shithole” countries.

“When you give [credence] to the idea that people from this culture are thieves, murderers and racist and come from shithole countries, I don’t know how you come to them and say we want your vote,” Steele said.

Finally, he said the upcoming midterms will represent a challenge for Republicans because Trump has had two years in office and voters are now more likely to seek the anti-Trump.

“Before they had Trump against Hillary, someone they didn’t like,” Steele said.

“Now, it’s Trump by himself and instead of comparing Trump to Hillary, they are comparing candidates running for office against Donald Trump.”

Pride, athletic prowess and academic excellence fuel the HBCU Classics here and nationwide When the Miles College Golden Bears and Morehouse College’s Maroon Tigers take to the field for their momentous match-up on Saturday September 22 at Soldier Field as part of the Chicago Football Classic, they will join a long tradition of HBCU football match-ups that date back to the late 60s. The first HBCU Classic was held in 1968 between Morgan State and Grambling State in New York City. That inaugural event drew more than 60,000 frenzied fans to Yankee Stadium.

A combination of things made the match-up legendary and paved the way for the Chicago matchup on this coming Saturday. First, the immense talent of the teams involved, with Grambling State being helmed by the legendary coach Eddie Robinson, the winningest coach in the NCAA. Second, the flamboyant marching band competitions and lastly, the pride and self-esteem on display for tens of thousands attending these classic matchups.

The Chicago Football Classic embraces those same component’s - big-stage football, academic excellence and artistic prowess – and they will be on full display for the 21st Annual event. And the crowds are no less impressive. This year, the Chicago Football Classic is expected to draw over 40,000 attendees and pump over a million dollars into Chicago’s economic engine.

Miles College and Morehouse College are part of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), one of the four conferences, comprised entirely of black college teams. The other three are the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The two teams meet earlier this year in a non-conference doubleheader ending with Miles College defeating Morehouse 7 to 4. Equally impressive is the Miles College Purple Marching Machine which was voted HBCU Sports Band of the Year in 2017 with 44% of 43K votes cast. No doubt the Morehouse College Maroon Tiger Marching Band is not intimidated by that distinction as their band is known by its nom de plume the “House of Funk Marching Band.

This year’s Classic will continue in the grand tradition of the over 40 classics happening around the country and do it as only Chicago can. If you want to get a taste of the band competition before the game there will be a Back to School Pep Rally featuring the drumlines from both schools on Friday, September 21 at Daley Plaza, 50 West Washington St., Chicago, IL at 12 p.m. – 1 p.m.

This 21st Annual Chicago Football Classic is a celebration of the role that Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) play in the life of young people. Fashion: How to Choose the Right Look for Any Occasion

Fashion is not just the clothes, the hair, the shoes or the accessories; fashion is every little element combined that makes “the look.” Make-up is one of those crucial elements that can make or break your desired look.

While going natural is acceptable, a little make-up can enhance any look. Here are a few tips to make sure you don’t waste a great outfit on bad make-up.

Always remember that make-up is applied in layers. Just like with other fashion elements, you have to start with the right foundation; then you have to build on it. When it comes to clothes, it’s about matching the right shirt or blouse with the right skirt, then matching the right skirt with the right shoe, adding the right accessories etc. When it comes to make-up, you have to match the right eye shadow with the right lip, then match that combo with the

right sparkling highlighter. The right make-up can complement any look that you want to create as long as you remember that every element has to work together.

Make-up artist Ebony Harris, uses multi-colored shadows, glitters, and everything else in her make-up arsenal to capture her clients’ vision for their look.

“I always ask my clients, ‘What’s the occasion?’ or ‘What does your favorite outfit look like?’ so, that I can make sure that I apply the perfect look,” said Harris.

When it comes to clothes, it’s always best to not be too “matchy, matchy,” but when it comes to your face, a coordinated look is your best bet.

it has become one of the most anticipated events in the natural hair community. The innovative runway show arose out of NaturallyCurly cofounder Michelle Breyer's frustration that Fashion Week lacked inclusivity.

"As I covered Fashion Week, I was disappointed to see that the models on the runway didn't reflect the diversity of our community," Breyer says. "We decided to create an event that celebrated texture and inclusion, and we wanted to do it during Fashion Week."

Texture on the Runway puts curls, coils and waves front and center, letting the hair inspire the fashion rather than the other way around. Brands are encouraged to take their interpretations of texture down the runway, from intricate protective styles like braids and twists, to cascading curls or big luscious 'fros.

In recent years, the brands' creativity has expanded well beyond the hair and fashion. This year, Cantu's presentation featured a true New Orleans second line band, SheaMoisture integrated a reggae soul performance by Meta and the Cornerstones and Carol's Daughter energized the crowd with an electrifying dance group, The Red Project NYC. Large-Scale Efforts Helping Pre-K Teachers Receive Resources; You Can, Too (StatePoint) Studies have shown that high-quality pre-K education better prepares children to achieve in school and makes them more likely to strive for higher vocational aspirations. It also has a positive impact on society. For every dollar spent on high-quality early education, society gains as much as $13 in long-term savings, according to a 2016 study by Nobel Laureate, James Heckman.

“Too many teachers struggle to access essential classroom resources,” says Sally McCrady, chair and president of PNC Foundation. “Luckily, it’s easier than ever to get involved in supporting local efforts to help pre-K teachers and their classrooms and students.”

Large-scale efforts are being made to help more teachers, classrooms and children get the resources they need, such as science kits, books, art supplies and field trips. One example of this is a $5 million alliance between the PNC Foundation and DonorsChoose.org, a crowd-funding platform whereby teachers request the materials and experiences they need most for their classrooms, and donors can give to the vetted projects that inspire them.

Any person interested in helping pre-K teachers can access DonorsChoose.org and donate to a project.

“Though teachers often spend their own money on classroom supplies, they still need many more resources to provide a well-rounded, high-quality learning experience,” says Yasmina S. Vinci, executive director, National Head Start Association (NHSA), a not-for-profit advocacy organi-

zation dedicated to supporting the Head Start community.

Major initiatives of this alliance include: • Teacher Gift Cards: Every teacher who submitted a preK project request in the PNC footprint since April 4, 2017 received a $100 electronic gift card to be used on DonorsChoose.org. More than 3,700 public pre-K and Head Start teachers received the cards to support new projects.

• Spotlight: One outstanding early education teacher in most PNC markets has been honored as a Teacher Hero for his or her efforts and involvement in the alliance. All hon-

orees received a $2,000 gift card to fund a project in their classrooms and a second $2,000 gift card to help seed other pre-K projects listed on DonorsChoose.org.

• PNC Volunteer Gift Cards: All PNC employees who volunteered for the early education initiative Grow Up Great in 2017 will receive a $50 electronic gift card to support pre-K project requests on DonorsChoose.org.

These resources are already having real-world impacts. Last year’s campaign enabled nearly 244,000 preschool children across 21 states and the District of Columbia to receive new classroom materials and educational opportunities. More than 7,500 pre-K classroom projects benefited from the grant, which was made in support of PNC Grow Up Great, its $350 million early childhood education initiative.
