Black Mayors in Southland create Caucus Continued from page 1

Black Mayors from 16 municipalities in the South Suburbs have come together to form the Southland Regional Mayoral Black Caucus of Cook County.

Robbins, Markham, Phoenix, Burnham, Calumet Park, Country Club Hills, Dixmoor, Dolton, Ford Heights, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Lynwood, Matteson, Riverdale, Sauk Village and University Park are represented in the newly formed Caucus.

“We’re repurposing, trying to redevelop our presence in the Southland,” said Robbins Mayor Tyrone Ward.

Ward added “[we’re] becoming more involved in assisting in the variety of things going on during these particular times.” He said especially because of COVID-19, the Caucus had to get involved in the health of the people who live in these communities, for example, being more involved in educating residents about the “do’s and don’t’s of health” and the shortage of hospitals in the area.

Ward went on to say that the Caucus will allow the mayors “to be a force in the whole scheme of things in the total Southland.” He added the Caucus will focus on job training in technology and in other skills because

it has come to the attention of members of the Caucus that the residents of their communities have been on the frontlines and are essential workers during this pandemic.

Ward said the 16 mayors represent approximately 175,000 residents and the Caucus will make sure they are heard by elected officials throughout the state when it comes to matters affecting the Southland. He added the mayors should “be the voice” for the people, pointing out that politics are local and “politics start at home.”

Phoenix Mayor Terry Wells said places like Phoenix and Robbins have always had a history of having Black leadership and now the mayors are working together. He added Black Mayors from Ford Heights, Phoenix, Harvey and Robbins set the stage for Black mayors to be involved regionally.

Wells said that coming together has resulted in the support of events from other mayors. He said it sent a message to people, especially people running for state office. “Whether you were running for governor, U.S. Senate, whatever you were running for, you need to come through the body,” he said.

Markham Mayor Roger Agpawa said all of the Black Mayors in the Caucus watched people like Harold Washington and it helped to prepare

them. “We have economic development that is coming our way and we understand what is coming our way,” he said. “We want the region to understand that we get it, of all that is coming to us, the economic development that is coming to our communities.”

Agpawa mentioned the Amazon Fulfillment Centers, which will be built in University Park, Matteson and Markham, and the Amazon distribution center in University Park, as well as the LogiPark in Country Club Hills.

He said those opportunities were prevalent in the Northern suburbs and now they are coming to the Southland and the Caucus is ready to take advantage of more economic development in the region.

Country Club Hills Mayor James Ford said all of the economic development in the region also results in jobs in the Southland, for the residents in those communities.

“We understand that the people that live in our community deserve jobs, and they deserve jobs to be from their community,” he said. “A lot of our residents moved to the Southland in hope of a better life and with all of these Africa[n] American mayors working together in unison, we will continue to work and make this a better place for our residents. We want to create jobs,” he said.

Notable African-Americans and Social Justice Activists Rally Behind the Launch of ABIS Founder, Gary Charles, has fostered a partnership with high profile individuals to launch Advancement of Blacks in Sports, Inc. (ABIS), a newly established non-profit organization with a mission to connect and inspire people to boldly advocate for racial, social, and economic justice for Blacks in sports. ABIS works to foster a culture of equity and inclusion in all aspects of sports that lead to racial, economic and social justice.

New Poll Finds Parents and Teachers Divided in How They’re Thinking About Distance Learning and Digital Learning Tools As the majority of the nation’s largest school districts are starting the school year off virtually, a new NewSchools Venture Fund-Gallup poll examines how students, parents and teachers are thinking about distance learning, education technology and equity.

Building off of a pre-pandemic poll partnership with Gallup, NewSchools commissioned the new survey to provide key insights as school leaders navigate budget constraints, technology access issues, and health and safety concerns.

The survey finds gaps and mismatches in expectations that threaten educational equity and present challenges schools will need to overcome in order to support student success. While most teachers (56%) and just under half of students (48%) say they’re confident or very confident around their ability to teach and learn, the majority of parents think otherwise – with just 29% feeling confident or very confident that their child’s school will provide a high-quality education this year.

Teachers in higher-poverty schools are the most likely to say they want parents to be more involved. Yet parents from low-income backgrounds are most likely to say they were already very involved in the spring.

These data suggest a worrisome dynamic in higher-poverty schools: parents see themselves as working hard to support students’ learning, yet teachers would like them to be more involved in the fall. Additional findings include: * The majority of teachers (56%) expect students to learn less than they typically do in fall 2020, but parents and students are more likely to say they will learn as much or more as a typical fall semester. * Almost half of parents (49%) think their children will learn as much as a typical fall semester and nearly 1 in 10 parents (9%) think their children will learn more this year than a typical fall semester. * Half of students (50%) say they will learn as much as a typical fall semester, and 1 in 5 students (22%) expect to learn more this year than a typical fall semester. * The vast majority of teachers say they will be making up for missed learning opportunities with students in the prior spring, with nearly half (48%) thinking they will need to spend a lot of time and an additional 43% thinking they will spend at least some time on helping students catch up. * While parents are slightly more positive about learning gaps from the spring, 38% of parents think teachers will have to spend a lot of time on learning loss, and another 38% expect teachers to spend some time on helping students catch up. * Students are more confident about not needing much

“It’s a big deal that parents, teachers and students see the year ahead so differently,” said NewSchools CEO Stacey Childress.

“This poll is a clarion call for schools to get on the same page with the people they serve, especially on the vital question of how much learning we expect students will do.”

As this school year gets underway, schools have an opportunity to better engage parents in the rollout and continuous improvement of how education technology is used in distance learning. Parents and teachers currently have generally positive assessments of the tools themselves, which lays some good grounding to build off of in the coming months: * 72% of teachers and 68% of parents rated their digital tools excellent or good. 90% of teachers see great value in using digital learning in the future. * Disparities by income continue to appear in data around distance learning device access and quality, with parents from lower-income backgrounds less likely to rate the digital learning tools their children used as good or excellent. * Black parents were most likely to rate the digital learning tools their child used as good or excellent. * Latino parents were the least likely to rate the digital learning tools training and support they received as good or excellent.

“As a parent of three children, I really struggled with the sudden shift to distance learning even though I had deep prior knowledge of how ed tech tools work,” said Tonika Cheek Clayton, managing partner at NewSchools. “As schools strive to better support families this fall, there’s a real need to address the inequities we witnessed earlier this year through creatively partnering with families. This will take innovation, flexibility, patience and a willingness from teachers, parents and students to try to work together in new and different ways.”

Results are based on surveys conducted July 22 – Aug. 5, 2020, with a random sample of 2,345 public school parents and 1,088 public school students in grades 3-12, and teacher surveys conducted July 16 - July 23, 2020, with a random sample of 1,111 PK-12 public school teachers.

OP-ED: Trump Regime vs. The Icc: The Wrong Side Of “Sovereignty”

In June, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order providing for sanctions against persons who “have directly engaged in any effort by the [International Criminal Court] to investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute any United States personnel without the consent of the United States.”

On September 2, The US regime imposed such sanctions on two ICC officials: Fatou Bensouda, the court’s chief prosecutor, and Phakiso Mochchoko, head of its Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division.”

Their offense? Investigating allegations of US war crimes in Afghanistan.

Such investigations, says White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, “are an attack on the rights of the American people and threaten to infringe upon our national sovereignty.”

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo thunders that the US regime “will not tolerate [the ICC’s] illegitimate attempts to subject Americans to its jurisdiction.”

There certainly are questions of sovereignty and jurisdiction here, but Pompeo and Company are on the wrong side of those questions.

Afghanistan’s US-installed, US-allied regime ratified the Rome Statute in 2003, thereby placing war crimes committed on its territory, and the persons accused of committing those

crimes, under the court’s jurisdiction.

Like it or not, that assignment of jurisdiction is an exercise of Afghan sovereignty.

Mike Pompeo wouldn’t object to a Czech police officer arresting an American driver accused of running a red light and hitting a pedestrian in Prague, or to a Czech court trying the case.

Donald Trump wouldn’t sign an executive order sanctioning Thailand’s Revenue Department or Central Tax Court for charging and trying an American who resides in Bangkok for evasion of that regime’s taxes.

The basis of the modern Westphalian Model nation-state is the notion of each state’s sovereignty within its borders. That sovereignty includes www.citizennewspapergroup.com

the power to assign jurisdiction to courts to investigate and try crimes committed within those borders.

Refusal to cooperate with the ICC’s investigations, or to extradite Americans charged with war crimes, absent US ratification of the Rome Statute, are also problematic. Protecting accused war criminals and denying victims their day in court just isn’t a very good look on any regime.

But at least those positions would be arguable from a sovereignty standpoint. This isn’t. Sanctioning the court’s officials for exercising their assigned jurisdiction is a violation of Afghan sovereignty, not an exercise of US sovereignty.

Of course, the US government

could avoid entanglements with the ICC simply and easily, by ending its practice of invading countries halfway around the world, occupying those countries for decades at a time, and covering the world with military bases and troops to staff them.

If Trump and Pompeo don’t want US military personnel to do the time, they should stop sending US military personnel abroad to do the crimes.

IBM Study: Consumers’ COVID-19 outlook, optimism and preferences vary greatly across generations and geographies The August findings of an ongoing IBM (NYSE: IBM) Institute for Business Value (IBV) survey of global consumers reveal that across the globe individuals remain highly concerned about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their daily lives, but there are clear differences in outlook across age groups and countries.

The survey of more than 14,500 adults across Brazil, China, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, showed that due to the pandemic, individuals are making marked changes in how they work, shop and live – new habits that may not shift dramatically even once a vaccine becomes available.

“Our data tells us that many individuals are looking for more transparency and flexibility from their employers as they navigate this great uncertainty caused by the pandemic,” said Jesus Mantas, senior managing partner, IBM Services.

“Organizations need to focus on building trust with their workforce and customers, and agility to deliver solutions that meet them where they are.”

Global optimism remains stagnant with concerns divided among generations and countries Consumers globally report high levels of concern about the pandemic and its impact on their lives. The overwhelming majority of global respondents said they believe we will see more pandemic events like this in the future. 69% of Americans surveyed expressed concern about a second wave hitting later in 2020, while in the UK, Mexico, Spain and Brazil, at least three in four respondents expressed similar views.

70% of surveyed Americans said COVID-19 has made them more concerned about the safety and health of themselves and their families, consistent with July. 88% of Brazilians and 54% of Germans surveyed agreed.

There is consumer optimism, however, with one-third of responding Americans who believe the U.S. economy will recover in 2021.

Compared to other countries, respondents in India and China were the most optimistic about their national economies recovering in 2020.

Globally, the data suggest there is a generation gap. Consumers’ opinions about the impact of the pandemic vary widely across age groups: * 69% of millennials (ages 25-39) are concerned about their job security and 60% said the pandemic has taken a toll on their mental health, higher than all other age groups. * Baby Boomers (ages 55-70+) are the most pessimistic on economic recovery, with seven in ten reporting they believe their nation’s economy will continue to see an economic downturn or significant recession. * Generation Z (ages 18-24) is the most optimistic about the economy, with more than half noting they believe the economy will recover to its pre-COVID-19 state in the next few months.

Many employees have high expectations for transparency and flexibility from their employers In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than half (52%) of Americans surveyed

reported that they trust their employer. At the same time, their expectations about the measures needed to feel comfortable returning to a workplace remained high across August and July. 64% of Americans surveyed said employers need to clearly communicate what is being done to sanitize the workplace (63% in July), and more than half indicated interest in technology-driven solutions like systems for reserving spaces to avoid crowded ‘hot spots’ in the workplace.

Some participating consumers seem to be feeling the fatigue of “working from home” feeling more like “living at work.” The percentage of responding Americans indicating they would like to continue to work remotely at least occasionally declined from more than 80% in July to 67% in August, and half said they wanted remote work to be their primary way of working (down 15 points from July). India had the highest percentage (33%) of respondents preferring to exclusively work remotely.

Roughly one in three Americans surveyed cited mental health as the number one factor affecting their preference for their future working environment; nearly half of respondents in India and Brazil agreed.

Other U.S. findings among those surveyed: * Skills: Nearly one in three Americans report taking more online training or education as a result of COVID-19. * Back to school: More than half of Americans are worried that sending students back in person will lead to further outbreaks. At the same time, four in ten are concerned that their child(ren) will fall behind in their education if schools do not reopen this year. 47% of feel strongly that their employer should provide special accommodations for childcare needs (41% in July).

New patterns for shopping and visiting venues in the U.S. reveal opportunities for businesses to provide options that meet consumers where they are During the pandemic, American consumers have been experimenting with new types of shopping services and tools – even across the technological generation gap. 44% of those surveyed have tried or would like to try placing an order via mobile app (30% pre-pandemic), 46% ordering online with curbside pickup (18% pre-pandemic), and 30% virtually trying on an outfit (9% pre-pandemic).

But almost seven in ten Americans surveyed believe a COVID-19 vaccine will not be available until 2021 or later, and even when a vaccine is available, many consumers are not sure if they will be comfortable visiting many types of venues. Only 27% will definitely visit a shopping mall once a vaccine is available, 21% a movie theater and 18% a live sporting event.

The IBV has surveyed more than 68,000 consumers since April and plans to continue polling the public in the months ahead. Later this fall, the IBV plans to release a report examining how more than 3,500 C-Suite executives globally are transforming their business to survive and thrive in the new normal across industries such as banking, retail, healthcare and technology.

NEWS Ice Cube Collaborates With Iconic Artist And Activist, Shepard Fairey, To Create Logo For ‘A Contract with Black America’ In the wake of outcries against racial injustice, inequality and civil unrest in the United States, Ice Cube and American artist, Shepard Fairey, have revealed the ‘A Contract with Black America’ logo.

“It was incredible to work with Shepard on this logo. I appreciate him donating his time to this cause, we both believe that the pen is mightier than the sword,” says Ice Cube.

‘A Contract with Black America’ was drafted following the death of George Floyd and recognition that the wealth gap between Black and White families is an

unacceptable 10-1.

After reflecting on the impact of these events on not only himself, but the country as a whole, Ice Cube harnessed that energy to help develop a plan to help Black Americans move forward.

Walt Disney World Resort Reimagines Holiday Traditions in 2020 A reimagined holiday celebration will begin Nov. 6, 2020, at Walt Disney World Resort, with the four theme parks, Disney Springs and Disney resort hotels decked for the season. Through Dec. 30, guests will discover seasonal food and drinks at The Most Magical Place on Earth, as well as special merchandise and enchanting new entertainment experiences.

When night falls at Magic Kingdom Park, projection effects will transform Cinderella Castle with a kaleidoscope of designs, including a whimsical Christmas sweater and a regal overlay of red, green and gold ornamentation.
