South Suburban Village Considers Hiring New Police Officers Continued from page 1

The Village of Dolton Board of Trustees recently held a special meeting to discuss whether or not to hire more police officers for the village. This has been an ongoing discussion for quite some time and the Board of Trustees recently approved the hiring of five polices officers but with a recent uptick in violent crime, the mayor is asking for more.

During the special meeting the Village of Dolton Mayor, Riley Rogers, asked the Board of Trustees to consider hiring 20 police officers instead of the five they had formerly approved.

“I’m requesting this board to consider hiring 20 more police officers. We’ve had a large number of police officers retire and they have not been replaced and the board has given us the authority to hire five full-time police officers but that hasn’t taken place yet,” said

Rogers. “I’m asking this board to consider the crisis that we’re in and to give the approval to hire at least 20 police officers.”

With regards to funding for the 20 new police officers, Rogers said that he has reached out to Congresswoman Robin Kelly who directed him to the Department of Justice and he plans to begin the process of applying for emergency funding to support the immediate hiring of 20 full-time officers.

He also said that he has reached out to the Cook County Sheriff and the Illinois State Police to assist with patrolling the community in the meantime.

“I believe some of this is overflow from the city of Chicago and we also have some gang activity that’s been happening on the west side of the Village and we are addressing that. I’ve asked for assistance from the Cook County Sheriffs and I’ve reached out to the State Police and they are now assisting and patrolling in the village. We have these other agencies that are assisting with the

shortage of manpower that we have by patrolling and we are trying to get ahead of this crime situation,” said Rogers.

Since 2016, the Village of Dolton Police Department has lost a total of 15 officers due to retirement, termination, resignation, or disability, according to Interim Police Chief Ernest Mobley.

During the meeting, Mobley said that they have been diligently working to hire the five new officers that the Board had already approved but so far, they had only hired three, two of which are already in training and the third is set to begin training very soon. He said that he would like to see at least 15 full-time officers hired.

“We are asking for 15 officers. These officers will be utilized in specialized units as well as patrol,” said Mobley. “It is my goal to not have any more homicides. I think that the manpower we have had, with the officers that go out and put their life on the line every day, has done an exceptional job.”

BLACK CARDIOLOGISTS DISCUSS, ADDRESS CHICAGO’S BARRIERS TO CARDIOVASCULAR CARE Despite advanced therapies and new treatment options for patients with, or at risk for cardiovascular disease, access remains a challenge for underserved and minority patient populations. The Spirit of the Heart Community Leaders’ Forum, the first in a national series of forums and health fairs sponsored by the Association of Black Cardiologists, was held at Imani Village, 901 E. 95th Street.

The forum was an invitation-only discussion about local healthcare disparities and steps for improving access to cardiovascular and primary care on Chicago’s South Side, according to an Advocate Trinity Hospital news release. Participants discussed concerns of the community and took away actionable steps for reducing barriers to health care.

Community activists, church leaders, healthcare providers, healthcare industry leaders and Association of Black Cardiologist members joined a Town Hall led by Dr. Marlon Everett, a cardiologist with Advocate Trinity Hospital.

CHICAGO LAW FIRM RE-FILES NATIONWIDE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AGAINST THE MAKERS OF JUUL E-CIGARETTES A Chicago law firm has re-filed a nationwide class action lawsuit against the makers of JUUL e-cigarettes. Moll Law Group filed claims on behalf of teen addiction and injuries associated with nicotine ingestion, including a recent warning by the federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) of the association between seizures and e-cigarettes.

According to the CDC, about 4.9 million middle and high school students were current users of a tobacco product in 2018, meaning that they used such products within the past 30 days.

This represents an increase of 1.3 million users just since 2017. According to a recent Wells Fargo report, JUUL owns three-quarters of the e-cigarette market.

Senator John McCain and Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins to be Honored In Chicago The Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) has announced that the late Arizona Sen. John McCain and Mayor Adrian Perkins of Shreveport, Louisiana will be honored for their remarkable leadership and commitment to service at Tillman Honors on Friday, Nov. 8 in Chicago, Illinois.

Tillman Honors, presented in partnership with the NFL, celebrates Pat Tillman’s legacy by honoring those who exemplify his fortitude and spirit of service, and who have carried that legacy forward through remarkable civic contributions. In 2002, Pat Tillman proudly put his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country. Family and friends established the Pat Tillman Foundation following Tillman’s death in April 2004 while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan.

The son and grandson of distinguished Navy admirals, Sen. John McCain’s served as a naval aviator for 22 years, including in North Vietnam during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Navy in 1981. His naval honors include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. McCain was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and elected to the United States Senate in 1986. He was the Republican Party’s nominee for president in the 2008 election. Over the course of his career, McCain served as Chairman of the Senate Committees on Indian Affairs, Commerce, Science and Transportation, and most recently, Armed Services, according to a press release.

While in law school, he assisted Governor John Bel Edwards on criminal justice reform. Perkins announced his candidacy for mayor of Shreveport on April 26, 2018. During the campaign, he stressed policing reform, economic development, and smart-city initiatives. Perkins was installed as the 56th Mayor of Shreveport on Dec. 29, 2018.

NEWS The Allstate Foundation and Serena Williams Shine a Spotlight on a Dangerous and Often Overlooked Form of Domestic Violence The signs of financial abuse are often invisible, from extreme restrictions on spending to blocked access to bank accounts or ruined credit. Nearly 50% of Americans are unaware that financial abuse is a form of domestic violence, and nearly one-third find the topic of domestic violence taboo – up 10% since 2014 – according to a 2018 national survey by The Allstate Foundation.

To raise awareness of this often hidden form of domestic violence and open a national conversation on recognizing the signs of financial abuse, The Allstate Foundation recently debuted a public service announcement titled “Signs” that features tennis champion, philanthropist and Allstate Foundation Purple Purse ambassador Serena Williams. Purple Purse is a signature program of The Allstate Foundation, which is an independent charitable organization made possible by subsidiaries of The Allstate Corporation.

Domestic violence affects one in four women in America, and even though financial abuse is present in 99% of domestic violence situations, it’s seldom discussed and commonly misunderstood.

“Signs” is the first initiative under The Allstate Foundation’s new campaign platform – “Know Financial Abuse. No Domestic Violence.” – aimed at spurring public action on this pervasive issue.

“I am a longtime champion of standing up for what you believe in, and I am proud to use my voice for anyone who can’t use theirs,” said Williams. “I hope this piece helps put a spotlight on the hidden signs of financial abuse, sparks meaningful conversations with loved ones and creates an understanding that we need to be advocates and allies for those around us.”

In the PSA, Williams navigates a maze-like setting riddled with some of the most common signs of financial abuse victims face in their daily lives. The film ends with a rallying cry, encouraging the public to recognize the signs of financial abuse and start a national dialogue to help the millions who are trapped in abusive relationships find freedom.

“Not all abuse is visible. Unlike the marks and bruises of physical violence, the signs of financial abuse can be difficult to

express authority to investigate and file suit against violators of the Prevailing Wage Act, the Employee Classification Act, the Minimum Wage Law, the Day and Temporary Labor Services Act and the Wage Payment and Collection Act. The new Worker Protection Unit will work collaboratively with the Illinois Department of Labor to detect unlawful conduct but may also take direct legal action against widespread and pervasive wage payment violations and unfair labor practices.

It also creates the Worker Protection Unit Task Force within the Office of the Illinois Attorney General to facilitate information sharing and collaboration between local and state prosecutors and regulators as well as promote a statewide outreach and enforcement effort targeting

Legislation Creates Worker Protection Unit in Attorney General’s Office Governor JB Pritzker recently signed legislation creating a Worker Protection Unit within the Office of the Attorney General which will protect Illinois workers from wage theft and other unlawful employment practices.

“When Illinoisans put in a hard day’s work, they deserve to be compensated fairly and treated with dignity, and this new Worker Protection Unit will make sure of it,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Attorney General Raoul and Leader Hoffman have led the charge to protect workers’ rights, and I’m proud to sign this legislation that ensures the state of Illinois expeditiously prosecutes employers violating state labor laws. Our hardworking residents deserve nothing less.”

The task force will report on its work to the governor and General Assembly by December 1, 2020. Senate Bill 161 takes effect on January 1, 2020.

A Fool’s Folly

The hundreds of thousands of distressed desperate women with babies, children and men from Central America, South America and Africa who journey thousands of miles from their countries, risking their lives and leaving those that they love behind to enter the United States for a new life, will not be stopped by a Southern border wall.

That belief is simply folly, or at worse, political rhetoric designed to win over emotional voters that can be easily manipulated during the election season by an administration whose life expectancy, many predict, will conclude in 2020.

Serious thinkers understand that a comprehensive federal immigration strategy and a working relationship with the leaders of nations such as Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, are critical to stem the tide of the massive numbers of migrants that are moving north.

Perhaps the president and those who help him to shape his immigration policy might consult with people such as the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, who recently suggested that migrants would remain in the country that he leads if there were sufficient employment and a safe environment.

President Bukele recently urged Washington to become his country’s partner in creative a massive jobs programs in El Salvador.

He said that he believes his government, with assistance from President Trump, could create nearly 400,000 jobs that do not exist today. Those jobs, President Bukele said, would discouraged Salvadorans from seeking a life in the United States, he added, saying “… if people have an opportunity for a decent job, a decent education, a decent health care system and security, I know that forceful migration will be reduced to zero.”

No one wants to leave their home. If the average person were to examine their own lives and found that they were jobless and fearful, they would search for a place where they could earn an income and raise their families in peace.

Isn’t that what the first settlers in this country did when they fled what they characterized was tyranny in England?

So, history teaches us that those who stand at our Southern Border eager to enter and those who are walking towards it are not much different from those who settled what is now the United States of America, which we have declared as the ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave.’

Half Of Working Americans Would Lie About Cell Reception And Wi-Fi Access To Avoid Work Calls And Email On Vacation Little white lies about Wi-Fi are acceptable to half (49%) of working Americans avoiding checking into the office while on vacation, according

to the 2019 Vacation Confidence Index* released by Allianz Global Assistance, a leading travel insurance and assistance company.

As “email creep,” referring to when work obligations encroach on personal time, affects two thirds (65%) of workers who feel the need to check-in with the

office while on vacation, using limited phone service or Wi-Fi in a vacation destination has become the excuse du jour for employees this summer.

Most likely to use the excuse are Millennials (59%), followed by Gen X’ers (49%) and Boomers (32%). While men and women are equally honest, with no difference between the sexes at 49% each, those earning more than $50,000 a year are significantly more likely (53%) to use the excuse compared to those earning less than $50,000 (39%).

Who is the most likely person to pull the “I’m cutting out” excuse?

A white (53%), college-educated (50%) Millennial (59%) who is married (53%) with children (53%) and working full time (50%) for an annual salary more than $50,000 (53%) in the Northeast (53%).

A quarter of all working Americans (24%), meanwhile, make a point not to go on vacation in places where poor cell reception or Wi-Fi access could disrupt their connection to the office.

Millennials (74%) are the most likely to check email while on vacation, but the rate is also high for Gen X’ers (58%) and Boomers (63%), with the most common reason: it makes catching up on work easier when returning to the office (34%).

Despite the pressures to stay “online” and connected to the office while on vacation, the majority of working Americans (54%) would choose to work even more while away if it meant they were able to take more vacations throughout the year, with Millennials (64%) more likely choosing the more vacations with more checking in at work

scenario. Boomers, meanwhile, were more likely (54%) to prefer fewer vacations if it means they could be unplugged from the office.

“Most working Americans feel pressured to spend their vacations attached to their work email, when they may just need a few days to unplug. 6 Play Activities That Can Help Manage ‘Bad Behavior’ StatePoint - When children misbehave, there’s often a reason for it, according to experts, who point out that understanding the behaviors can help you manage them more effectively, especially during play time.

“Our bodies want to be in balance and, ideally, we seek out what we need when we need it. When we are hungry, we eat. When we are thirsty, we drink. But when it comes to children whose sensory and nervous systems don’t process efficiently or effectively, this restorative balance may simply look like bad or undesired behavior,” says Ellen Metrick, a toy design consultant and an expert contributor to TheGeniusofPlay.org, who has a background in special education.

During play time, children who are understimulated may seek out sensory stimulation by spinning around repeatedly or intentionally banging into walls or even other children.

Children who are over-stimulated may get agitated and retreat from sensory stimulation by crawling under tables.

While playtime is when some of these behaviors may be exhibited, it’s also a chance for parents and caretakers to help children regulate their sensory system,” says Metrick. “Remember that every individual is different, and if something isn’t working for your child, you can tweak the activity to fit his or her needs.”

Hanging on monkey bars and climbing ladders use a child’s

own body as resistance to send signals to the brain and help organize the nervous system.

• Have a dance party. Games like freeze dance and musical chairs add structure and auditory processing to play. Children receive feedback from their muscles and joints with every step they take.

• Pop some bubbles. Jumping up and down on a sheet of bubble wrap can be great fun and

the deep pressure will trigger sensory receptors, telling the brain how to control movement and postural balance.

For children who are over-stimulated and need a bit less distraction, consider these three ideas for helping kids focus, from Metrick and The Genius of Play: • Tone down the sound. Removing extraneous sounds, like music, television and the whirring of a washing machine, may lessen distracting stimuli and improve the child’s focus and engagement in the activity.

• Play at a table. Using a placemat or cookie sheet under the toy or activity at an empty table provides visual boundaries for focused play. It helps to have feet firmly planted on the ground, rather than dangling, so consider using a childsized play table.

• Create a quiet area. Adding soft pillows and blankets to a cozy corner gives children a space to seek respite from environmental stimuli.

NEWS Contest Promotes Emerging SciFi Writers and Illustrators NewsUSA - Aspiring artists and authors in the science fiction and fantasy arena have an outlet to finding a wider audience, thanks to the L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Award.

The award, now in its 36th year, has long been an opportunity for a promising debut for professional writers and illustrators in science fiction and fantasy.

“The contest was formed for a purpose beyond simply giving awards - it was intended to help foster the next generation of master writers,” states Joni Labaqui, the Contests’ Administrator.

L. Ron Hubbard, one of the most recognized and prolific American writers, created and endowed the Writers of the Future Contest in 1983 to help foster new talent in science fiction and fantasy writing.

For writers, the contest is a chance to have their work judged by professional authors who are among the masters of the SciFi and fantasy genre and to be discovered by a wide audience.

Entrants retain all publication rights to their work, and there is no entry fee.

The contest awards quarterly first, second, and third prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500 every three months. One of these four quarterly first-place winners

is selected as the Grand Prize winner for the year. The Grand Prize Winner receives the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Pen Award and an additional $5,000.

The judging protocol and prize structure is the same for illustrators.

The Grand Prize Winner is chosen from quarterly winners to receive the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Brush Award and an additional $5,000 cash.

The 35th annual award winners were Andrew Dykstal and Aliya Chen, who were honored at a gala event this spring in Hollywood, Calif. Prior to the awards ceremony, writer and artist winners spent a week enjoying workshops with established writers, artists, and publishing professionals.

“I feel that my career as a writer has now been catapulted,” says Mr. Dykstal, Grand Prize Writing Award Winner for 2019.

Ms. Chen, winner of the Grand Prize Illustrator’s Award, says: “Winning this Grand Prize Award is validation for me that illustration, which is a passion for me, doesn’t have to be limited to a hobby, but it’s definitely possible as a career.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment Partners With American Black Film Festival On Its “ABFF 365” Initiative ABFF Ventures, LLC, recently announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is the first entertainment studio to support the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) on its newly formed global diversity initiative, “ABFF 365,” targeted to creatives and audiences of African heritage.

The program expands the ABFF brand beyond its annual film festival, now in its 23rd year, to include other experiential events and screenings showcasing the work of black content creators and promoting camaraderie among multicultural artists in the motion picture and television industries. “ABFF 365” program will continue this year with the initiation of ABFF Global, an international film series and extension of the American Black Film Festival. Its mission is to promote the universal appeal of films by and about people of color and encourage collaboration between content creators throughout the African diaspora, with the objective of expanding distribution opportunities for black content on an international scale. The three-day program will be held at Picturehouse Central, and offer award-winning features, short films and web series from the 2019 Festival. ABFF Global will visit other major cultural hubs around the world, including Madrid, Cape Town and Paris in 2020. “ABFF 365” culminates this year with ABFF Honors, an annual awards show that salutes excellence in the motion picture and television industry. Siriano designed a custom couture look inspired by the brand, which celebrates the freedom to be “more than one thing.”

The couture fashion look was shared recently at a private event held in New York City to an exclusive audience of media and fashion insiders.

Earlier this year, SweeTARTS launched a new marketing campaign called “Be Both,” celebrating the multi-dimensionality of its products, and its Gen Z brand fans who live unapologetically colorful lives. The new campaign champions Gen Z and their desire to reject one-dimensional definitions of identity, by celebrating their passions, expressions and tastes, and connecting this back to the brand’s multitude of colliding flavors, textures and forms.

Here are some fun ways to make playtime an opportunity to help young kids explore new ideas and develop their interests: • Art: Dedicate a little corner of a room to kid-friendly arts and crafts projects. Stock the space with finger paints, watercolors, play-dough, crayons and construction paper to encourage kids to refine their skills and gain a deeper appreciation for art.

Have kids draw and paint from their imagination or take them on trips to a local park to capture what they see.

• Food: Inspire kids’ interest in the culinary world with fun toys that let them be the chef. With the LeapFrog Smart Sizzlin’ BBQ Grill, for example, little grill masters can pretend to grill by placing eight different play food items on an interactive skewer.

Having an opportunity to practice sports in a fun, pressure-free environment will help kids develop athletic skills on their own time, while building their confidence and opening the door for a deeper interest in the future.

• Music: It’s never too early to develop a sense of rhythm and gain knowledge of musical genres and instruments. New toys like the Learn & Groove Dancing Panda will inspire kids to get up and move. The panda shakes, dances and spins around to the music and his guitar lights up with shapes, letters and numbers. Kids can play Freeze Dance and other games, press the musical instrument buttons on the panda’s light-up shoes to hear a saxophone, trumpet, drum and guitar, or press the whammy-bar music button to select from dozens of different tunes. The same line of toys also features the Learn & Groove Shakin’ Colors Maracas. One maraca includes colorful shaker beads and the other features a lightup dome that changes colors and plays maraca sound effects. Little ones can add rattling sounds to the songs that play, count from 1-10 with every shake, and press the

six light-up buttons to hear color and instrument names. Switching between English and Spanish mode lets kids explore all of the content in both languages.
