HOWARD UNIVERSITY APPOINTS DONNA BRAZILE AS KING ENDOWED CHAIR IN PUBLIC POLICY Howard University recently named veteran political strategist and author Donna Brazile as the 2018-2019 Gwendolyn S. and Colbert I. King Endowed Chair in Public Policy. Brazile will develop and host a five-part lecture series to engage the Howard community on several subjects, including politics, voting, criminal justice reform, and civility.

CHICAGO DENTIST INVITES THE PUBLIC TO 2ND ANNUAL ORAL CANCER WALK TO HELP SAVE LIVES With oral cancer on the rise, Chicago Dental Society (CDS) member Dr. Josephine Chang Pallotto and the Oral Cancer Foundation recently invited the public to join the 2nd Annual Oral Cancer Walk to raise funds and awareness of this disease. The event was held at the University of Illinois Chicago at the Les Miller Field at Curtis Granderson Stadium locates on 901 Roosevelt Road in Chicago.

Roughly 52,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer in 2018, according to the American Cancer Society. Because oral cancer is often discovered at a late stage, more than 10,000 of those cases may be terminal – so early detection is key to increasing survival rates. Inspired by her mother’s perseverance and strength during her own cancer treatments to help find a cure for other patients, Dr. Chang Pallotto organized the first Oral Cancer Walk in 2017.

Proceeds raised from the 2nd Annual Walk will go toward increasing awareness about the signs and symptoms, and how to screen for the disease – as well as toward oral cancer prevention through lifestyle changes, improved treatment modalities and research.

A recent vote by the South Suburban College (SSC) Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Dr. Lynette Stokes, the current Vice President of Academic Services at SSC, as the next college president and on Oct. 1, she will assume her role as the first woman President is SSC’s history.

“I’m honored that our Board of Trustees has confidence in my leadership ability. This is a very unique time in higher education and we are making history here at South Suburban College because I will be the first female president in the 91-year history.

More importantly, we are also making history in the state of Illinois because there are not a lot of female presidents in the community college setting,” said Stokes.

In preparation for her transition from Vice President to President, Stokes has been working closely with board members, community representatives and constitu-

ents, and the exiting president to develop an understanding of her new role, the needs of the community, and the needs of the school.

“The board appointed me in April and they allowed a lot of lead time so that I could do that crosswalk with the current president and be out in the community networking,” said Stokes. “That has been the focus for the last few months, renewed relationship building, understanding what direction we are going in as an institution, what our key performance indicators are and how do we get there, and what the expectation is for me as a leader.”

Now that school has resumed for the fall, Stokes will be spending time connecting with students to learn what their needs are and how she can best serve them as President of SSC. Stokes, who grew up in Chicago and in the child welfare system, believes that she will be able to connect with her students through emotional understanding.

“I think I have a different kind of connection and perspective because of my

background. I grew up in the child welfare system and was in child welfare at nine different foster homes, but what remained constant for me was that I was allowed to stay in the same school setting and having that connection with my teacher showed me the value of education because it was the saving grace for me. I think because of my socio-economic background, I lead with more of an emotional intelligence which will give me an edge in terms of understanding and making a connection with my students,” said Stokes.

As October inches closer and closer, Stokes is steadily preparing herself to take over as President of SSC. “I know that understanding the challenges we face and what’s going on is going to take a team and I am excited to have the opportunity and I’m excited for what we are going to do for our students and in the community. I carry it with a great deal of humbleness and honor that I am the chosen one,” said Stokes.

Rashard Johnson named as President of Advocate South Suburban and Advocate Trinity Hospitals Advocate Trinity Hospital, part of Advocate Aurora Health, has appointed Rashard Johnson as president of both Advocate South Suburban Hospital, in Hazel Crest, Ill., and Advocate Trinity Hospital, in Chicago, following a nationwide executive search.

Johnson’s appointment is effective September 24 and fills a key leadership role in Advocate Aurora’s South Chicagoland region, which includes Advocate Christ Medical Center, in Oak Lawn, Ill., Advocate South Suburban Hospital and Advocate Trinity Hospital.

South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn Says that Democrats that Want to Win in November Must Advertise in the Black Press

While there’s at least a perceived growing number of Democrats who say they want to replace California Rep. Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn has emerged as a favorite among his peers to become the first African American to hold that position.

In an exclusive interview with the NNPA Newswire, the 25-year congressman said that, while he’s ready for the challenge, Democrats currently have much bigger fish to fry.

“The first order of business is to win the [midterm] elections on November 6,” Clyburn said. “That’s what I’ve been concentrating on.”

Clyburn and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Cedric Richmond each told the NNPA Newswire that they’ve identified 37 districts across the country they believe can be won by Democrats this year, which would wrest control of the House from Republicans.

“We feel, with the right kind of effort, we can win,” Clyburn said.

Clyburn listed three keys to success this November.

The first key, Clyburn said, is to prioritize the Black vote; Democrats can’t afford to take the African American vote for granted.

Secondly,, the Democrats shouldn’t rely an an anti-President Donald Trump wave to get out the vote. Finally, Clyburn said that candidates must advertise in the Black Press, if they want to win in November.

“We are also talking about districts where Barack Obama won twice and where Hillary Clinton also won, but these voters don’t turn out for the so-called ‘off-year elections,’” Clyburn said. “We can’t let these voters feel like we’re taking them for granted.”

Clyburn, 78, said he was recently taken aback by one candidate, who said that he could win the Black vote by running on an anti-Trump platform.

“Wait one second,” Clyburn said that he told the individual. “We can’t just go around being ‘Republican-light.’ We have to be out there putting forth an alternative message, for our base, and we have to reach out to Black voters and let them know we’re not taking them or any of our base for granted.”

To that end, Clyburn said advertising campaigns must largely

include the Black Press.

“It’s very, very important…

Chairman Richmond and I have had candidates in and we’ve been telling them that one of the best ways to demonstrate that you’re not taking the Black vote for granted is to advertise in the Black Press,” Clyburn said.

The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) is the oldest and largest trade group representing the Black Press, comprised of more than 200 Blackowned newspapers operating in the the United States.

“I’ve been in [the Black Press].

My daughter and I ran a newspaper down South, so I know that candidates tend to take Black media for granted,” Clyburn said. “They tend to judge Black media the same way they do other media and you just can’t do that, because the business model is totally different.”

Each Sunday after attending Morris Brown A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., Clyburn said he and other churchgoers habitually pick up the local Black-owned newspaper.

“People tend to pay attention to the headlines, the stories and the ads in the Black Press so it’s vitally important that candidates know this,” Clyburn said.

A former history teacher, Clyburn said Trump’s obsession with dismantling Obama’s legacy is reminiscent of tactics employed by Andrew Johnson to demean his predecessor, Abraham Lincoln.

Johnson, who was impeached by House, had a vision of America as a White man’s government, according to historians.

“If you remember, it’s the same kind of reaction Johnson had to Lincoln and I remember sitting alone once in the Oval Office with Obama and I told him that this would be the kind of reaction he could expect,” Clyburn said. “[Obama] was never going to get the kind of respect for his presidency that was shown to presidents before him,” Clyburn said. “The narrative that exists in this country is that there are certain things that Black folks are not supposed to do and one of those things is becoming the president of the United States and [President Trump] and his administration, feel they have to do whatever they can to wipe out any semblance that Barack Obama was ever president of the United States.”

Clyburn continued: “[Trump] has a deep-seated hatred for people of

color and it manifests itself every day.”

Though he doesn’t support or agree politically with former Trump aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, Clyburn said he was deeply troubled when Trump referred to her as a “low life” and a “dog.”

“I’m the father of three daughters and I’m deeply insulted by the president of the United States referring to an African American women the way he referred to her,” he said.

“Politics aside, I’m insulted that the president of the United States would denigrate the office in this way.” www.thechicagocitizen.com

Clyburn continued: “The president asked an important question when he was running, ‘What do we have to lose?’ Well, we have lost dignity and the respect of the presidency, because of his coarseness in the office. When you lose respect, you’ve lost about everything there is to lose.”

While he still supports Pelosi, Clyburn said that if the Democrats take back the House, he’s up for the job as speaker.

“I have always supported her, but I have always remembered a sermon I heard my father give a number of

times,” Clyburn said. “That sermon stayed with me and he said, ‘keep your lamps trimmed and burning to be ready when the bridegroom comes.’ My point is, I’ve never forgotten that sermon so I keep my lamp burning so I’m ready.”

How Much Do Your Kids Know About Money?

Hearst magazines recently announced a licensing agreement with Gina Concepts, a subsidiary of Gina Group, to develop its first Cosmopolitan-branded cosmetic bags and accessories line.

Of the partnership, Steve Ross, Global Chief Licensing Officer and Head of Brand Development, Hearst Magazines says, “Cosmopolitan is a champion of fashion and beauty in every form, and with this new line of cosmetic accessories, beautiful and functional design is at the heart of every piece allowing ‘Cosmo Girls’ of all ages to express their own unique style.”

The partnership was brokered by IMG, Cosmopolitan’s global licensing representative.

The Chicago Jazz Orchestra At 40 The Chicago Jazz Orchestra (CJO), under the direction of Jeff Lindberg, is turning 40 in 2018, marking four decades as Chicago’s longest running professional jazz orchestra.

To celebrate, the CJO recently announced an inspired three-concert subscription series starting with a night celebrating jazz diva Nancy Wilson on October 13, followed by the December 21 debut of ELLAbration pairing Ella Fitzgerald’s signature holiday songs with Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite. The series culminates on May 18 with a major concert event celebrating 40 years of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra.

All three shows in the CJO’s 40th anniversary season will be presented at the historic Studebaker Theater, 410 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Single tickets to each concert are $35 (balcony) and $45 (floor).

Deadline Announced for Jacque Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund Black Public Media (BPM) recently announced a call for applications for the Jacquie Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund (JJMSF).

Established with funding provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the $300,000 scholarship fund is inspired by the life and work of Jacquie Jones, the Peabody Award-winning director and former executive director of BPM (then known as National Black Programming Consortium) who was steadfast in her commitment to helping foster the development and growth of diverse content creators prior to her death in January.

The fund will support emerging and diverse content producers of non-fiction shorts, feature length programs, web series, 360-VR (Virtual Reality) or podcasts.

“I am so pleased with the launch of the Jacquie Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund,” said CPB President and CEO Pat Harrison. “Through these scholarships, Jacquie Jones will

continue to inspire and encourage new storytellers as she did throughout her life.”

BPM, the nation’s only nonprofit dedicated solely to media content about the global black experience, will serve as the administrator of the fund. Awards will range from $20,000 to $100,000, depending on the type of project and the scope and phase of development/production.

“Jacquie Jones was a force in public media. Not only did she work on behalf of Black Public Media to bring stories to audiences, she advocated for the inclusivity of diverse voices at all levels of the public media system,” said BPM Executive Director Leslie Fields-Cruz. “The creation of the Jacquie Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, a fund specifically designed to support stories and content creators that reflect the true diversity of the American experience, will continue her legacy.”

For the JJMSF, BPM is seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds

with a minimum of three years of professional producing or directing experience. Among other requirements, applicants must also hold the artistic, budgetary and editorial control of the project as well as own the copyright to the proposed project. All proposed projects must be in the research and development, production or post-production phase and able to be completed no later than May 31, 2021. The application deadline is September 30, 2018, and scholarship recipients will be announced by January 2019.

The CJO presents a special tribute to the inimitable Nancy Wilson, featuring an expanded 40-piece orchestra and guest vocalists Roberta Gambarini, Bobby Wilsyn and Sarah Marie Young.

“Scammers know to take advantage of those who are stressed,” says Robert C. Ballard, president and CEO of Scholarship America, the nation’s largest nonprofit scholarship and education support organization. “Fortunately, there are some ways you can avoid getting duped.”

To help you spot scams, Scholarship America offers the following insights.

Fees and Other Red Flags Scholarship programs charging a fee to apply often look legitimate. But look at the bigger picture: if the provider is awarding $500 in scholarships and collecting fees from thousands of applicants, it’s not funding education so much as making money.

Your chances of earning a scholarship are slight if not impossible -- sham providers often collect fees and disappear.

Some providers claim to have a nostrings-attached grant or an incredibly lowinterest loan to offer, as long as you pay a tax or “redemption” fee in advance. Others offer to match you with guaranteed scholarships -- if you pay for a premium search service. Keep in mind, there’s no such thing as a “guaranteed scholarship.”

Remember, scholarship providers aren’t in the practice of sending funds out randomly; it’s likely the check will bounce, or you’ll be asked to send money back for “processing” or an “accidental” overpayment. Your safest bet? Tearing up the check and, if you have time, filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

Often unexpected “opportunities” are attempts to get you to divulge personal information. Even clicking on links can expose your data to scammers.

Be cautious: Google the name of the scholarship or organization. Scams have often been flagged by the FTC or Better Business Bureau.

Social Scammers A new scam making the rounds starts with a random friend request on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. Accept, and your new friend will start messaging you about a foolproof way to make money for college: they work for a scholarship provider and have found a loophole. They just need to enter you as a winner and you can split the money.

If this was real, it’d be incredibly unethical. However, in the midst of stress, you may be tempted -- and that could cost more than money. While you may be asked to send cash as an advance, most such scammers are phishing. Give them enough info, and you’ll be worrying about getting your identity back.

“Scholarship scams seem to work just enough for people to keep trying it,” says Ballard. “However, two main rules will help you avoid them: never pay to apply and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
