SUPER-MAJORITY OF PARENTS SUPPORT MORE FUNDING IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS, HIGHER PAY FOR EDUCATORS, ACCORDING TO NATIONAL PDK POLL The 51st annual PDK Poll of the Public’s Attitudes Toward the Public Schools finds that Americans overwhelmingly support increasing investments in the nation’s public schools: six in 10 parents say their schools are underfunded, and 74 percent say they support a strike by teachers for higher pay. The poll also finds that educators are fed up as 60% of teachers say they’re unfairly paid and 75% of teachers say their community’s schools are underfunded.

“Over the last several years, hundreds of thousands of NEA members and parents have stood together for the public schools our students deserve, creating the nationwide #RedForEd movement that has won increased investments in students in states across the nation,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García. “And yet, while the #RedForEd movement has helped more students and educators get the support they need, today’s PDK Poll should remind everyone that there is still so much more work to be done to correct the years of inadequate funding of our public schools.”

SYMPOSIUM EXAMINES MAKING ORAL HEALTH CARE MORE ACCESSIBLE A panel of distinguished leaders recently discussed the roles of the public, private, and philanthropic sectors in identifying and addressing the factors that lead to disparities in health care at the 2019 National Dental Association Convention (NDA) President’s Symposium which explored the challenges associated with bridging the health gap in the 21st century. The panel was held on July 20th at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel in Washington, D.C. For over 100 years, the NDA has been a national forum for minority dentists and a leader in advancing their rights. The NDA promotes oral health equity among people of color by harnessing the collective power of its members, advocating for the needs of and mentoring dental students of color, and raising the profile of the profession in their communities.

JOINT LETTER SIGNED BY 17 INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS SENT TO HHS SECRETARY ALEX AZAR Illinois Department of Insurance Director Robert Muriel recently joined 17 Commissioners representing tens of millions of American insurance consumers in a letter sent to U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar, urging him to protect rules that address unfair treatment of transgender consumers. The letter states that changes proposed by the Trump Administration will undermine civil rights protections for millions of consumers, create an uneven playing field for health insurers and negatively affect state insurance markets.

The proposed changes affect Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act, which prohibits sex discrimination in health insurance and clarifies protections for transgender Americans from being denied lifesaving, medically necessary care. On May 24, 2019 the Trump Administration proposed regulations that seek to roll back protections that ensure equal protection from discrimination by insurers and providers.

On Aug. 24, Thornton Township will once again host their 18th annual Taste of Thornton Township Basketball Tournament.

The event brings together teenagers, government employees, and local first responders to form basketball teams and represent their town or village in the tournament.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at South Suburban College in South Holland.

“This event has something for everyone of all ages,” said Tui M. Muse, chairman of the 18th annual Taste of Thornton Township Basketball Tournament. “We continue to make the Taste one of the largest and best events in the southland. I think people will be excited about all the new features we have brought in this year.”

This year’s event is expected to bring together around 1,000 people to enjoy food, live music, entertainment, games, crafts, a car show, and the basketball tournament.

In order to make this event a true taste

of Thornton Township, a wide variety of food will be offered for attendees including barbecued ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, catfish, jerk chicken, turkey legs, Italian sausage and beef, nachos, cheesecake, snow cones, Italian ice, and specialty teas, according to information provided by Thornton Township.

“The Taste is one of our largest events and brings people throughout Thornton Township in one place to enjoy great live music, food, and family entertainment,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor.

The headliner this year will be Heatwave, an international funk and disco-band.

Opening acts include the Chicago Boyz Acrobats, Visions of Santana, a Tina Turner impersonator, Youth Mexican Dance Group, and Past Life.

“This event is for the community to come together and enjoy food, entertainment, family and friends,” said Joyce Washington, Thornton Township trustee. We appreciate our great community. This year’s Taste of Thornton Township will have a variety of

entertainment for attendees from as far as Chicago, Indiana, and local residents.”

The basketball tournament will start at 5 p.m. on Aug. 24 and will host five-on-five basketball games in the gym at South Suburban College until a new winner is named.

Last year, the Lansing police department and teens won the tournament and the year before that, the Markham Police department won the tournament.

“When teenagers are able to see police officers out of the uniform and have meaningful interactions with them, that carries a lot of weight when they eventually see them in uniform,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr. Thornton Township communication manager, who oversees the basketball tournament.

“Every police officer we talked with last year saw the tournament as an important way to interact and reach teenagers and that gave us the feedback we needed to have the tournament again. Subaru Fosters Education Through Annual “Subaru Loves Learning” Initiative Subaru of America, Inc. recently announced that for the fifth consecutive year, the automaker will partner with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to broaden students’ worlds with the study of science, engineering and innovation through the Subaru Loves Learning initiative.

Princeton Review’s Annual College Rankings Based On Feedback From 140,000 Students According to a Princeton Review® survey that asked 140,000 students at 385 of the nation’s top colleges to rate their schools on dozens of topics important to applicants (and their parents), the college with the most highly rated career center is Clemson University (SC).

Clemson, where more than 80% of students use its Center for Career and Professional Development, ranked #1 on the “Best Career Services” list—one of 62 categories of The Princeton Review’s 28th annual college rankings reported recently on PrincetonReview. com.

On the “Great Financial Aid” list, based on students’ satisfaction with their aid awards, Bowdoin College (ME) earned the top spot, deservedly. The average grant Bowdoin awarded to its undergrads with need last year was $48,800.

Sarah Lawrence College (NY) finished first on the “Professors Get High Marks” list which is based on how students rated their professors as teachers. The college stands out for its highly regarded individualized study program and its low student/faculty ratio.

The Princeton Review’s ranking lists of the top 20 colleges in these and 59 other categories posted recently at www.princetonreview.com/ best385 where they can be searched for free with site registration. The lists is also reported in the new 2020 edition of the education services company’s annual “best colleges” guidebook, The Best 385 Colleges (Penguin Random House, $24.99) on sale now.

“We chose the 385 colleges for this edition as our ‘best’ overall, academically, based on data we gathered in 2018–19 from more than a thousand school administrators about their

The survey asked students 84 questions about their school’s academics, administration, campus community, and themselves.

The answer format used a five-point Likert scale to convert qualitative student assess-

The Best 385 Colleges is one of 150 Princeton Review books published by Penguin Random House. In addition to its college profiles and 62 ranking lists, the book has two bonus lists. Don’t Let Mass Shooters and the New York Times Destroy Freedom of Speech

“Online communities like 4chan and 8chan have become hotbeds of white nationalist activity,” wrote the editors of the New York Times on August 4 in the wake of a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas. Then: “Law enforcement currently offers few answers as to how to contain these communities.”

Wait, what? Is the Times really implying what it looks like they’re implying? Yes. “Technology companies have a responsibility to de-platform white nationalist propaganda and communities as they did ISIS propaganda,” the editorial continues. “And if the

technology companies refuse to step up, law enforcement has a duty to vigilantly monitor and end the anonymity, via search warrants, of those who openly plot attacks in murky forums.”

Translation: The New York Times has announced its flight from the battlefield of ideas. Instead of countering bad ideas with good ideas, they want Big Tech and Big Government to forcibly suppress the ideas they disagree with.

Not so long ago, the Times’s editors endorsed a very different view: “One of the Internet’s great strengths is that a single blogger or a small political group can inexpensively create a Web page that is just as accessible to the world as Microsoft’s

home page. But this democratic Internet would be in danger if the companies that deliver Internet service changed the rules so that Web sites that pay them money would be easily accessible, while little-guy sites would be harder to access and slower to navigate. Providers could also block access to sites they do not like.”

Now the Times says providers have a “responsibility” to block access to sites the Times doesn’t like. That’s quite a change. And an ugly one.

There are plenty of good reasons, both moral and practical, to oppose the suppression of white nationalist and other “extremist” web platforms.

dom of any kind and to any degree.

We must -- MUST -- have the right to form our own opinions, and to express those opinions, no matter how ugly others may find those opinions. Without that freedom, no other freedoms can survive.

As a practical matter, “extremists,” like everyone else, will choose to state, promote, and argue for their beliefs. If they can do so in public, those beliefs can be engaged and argued against. If they can’t do so in public, they’ll do so in private, without anyone to convince them (and those they quietly bring into their circles over time) of the error of their ways. The rest of us won’t have a clue what might be in the offing -- until

the guns come out, that is.

It’s appalling to see the New York Times endorsing an end to the freedom that undergirds its very existence and the prerogatives of every other newspaper and soapbox speaker in America. The only substantive difference between the editors’ position and that of the El Paso shooter, allegedly one Patrick Crusius, is that the shooter did his own dirty work.

Hebru Brantley, in Partnership with MWM Universe and Angry Hero, to Open ‘Nevermore Park’ Hebru Brantley, MWM Universe and Angry Hero, are partnering to create Nevermore Park, a neo-futuristic take on Chicago—where black culture and heroes are at the forefront.

Visitors to Nevermore Park will be transported into the fictional hometown of Brantley’s iconic characters: Flyboy and Lil Mama. The interactive art installation spans

nearly 6,000 square feet and is scheduled to open in the fall of this year.

“Nevermore Park is meant to be a fun, accessible, and invigorating experience for audiences of all ages to participate in a narrative-driven fine art installation,” Brantley, founder of Angry Hero, says. “This project is about reclaiming history—both in the United States and the city of Chicago—

through a lens that speaks to empowerment and giving agency to a historically disenfranchised community.”

Nevermore Park will be a ticketed experience and have a limited run. Powered

by Brantley’s imagination, this installation is the beginning phase of a larger Flyboy Universe franchise being built by MWMU. “For the first time people will be able to

walk into Nevermore Park,” Diana Williams, executive vice president of Creative at MWMU says. “We are excited to open the doors and invite people to become a part of what MWMU and Angry Hero have been working on. There is so much more to share in the world of Flyboy and Lil Mama.”

Fossil Group launches nextgen smartwatches

Research shows that if a bath is taken at the right time – 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, it will aid the natural circadian process and increase one’s chances of not only falling asleep quickly, but also get a quality sleep.

Science Proves A Bath 1-2 Hours Before Bed Improves Sleep Bioengineers from The University of Texas at Austin want to improve your sleep. Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering found that taking a warm bath 1-2 hours before bedtime can help you fall asleep faster and improve your overall quality of sleep.

In collaboration with the UT Health Science Center in Houston and the University of Southern California, the UT researchers searched all relevant databases — looking at a total of 5,322 studies.

They pulled information from publications with specific criteria to explore the effects of warm shower/bath, on a number of sleep-related conditions including: sleep onset latency-- the length of time that it takes to accomplish the transition from full wakefulness to sleep, total sleep time, sleep efficiency-- the amount of time spent asleep relative to the total amount of time spent in bed intended for sleep, and subjective sleep quality.

The paper explaining their method was recently published in the journal of Sleep Medicine Reviews.

The findings show the optimal time to bathe to cool down your core body temperature is 1-2 hours prior to bedtime. This helps increase the circulation of blood from the internal core of the body to the peripheral sites of the hands and feet

resulting in very efficient removal of body heat and decline in overall body temperature.

Therefore, if a bath is taken at the right time – 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, it will aid the natural circadian process and increase one’s chances of not only falling asleep quickly, but also get a quality sleep.

“When we looked through all studies, we noticed significant disparities in terms of the approaches and findings,” said Shahab Haghayegh, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and lead author on the paper. “The only way to make an accurate determination of whether sleep can, in fact, be improved was to combine all the past data and look at it through a new lens. Yes, the data proves that a warm shower or bath before bed does make a huge difference in your overall sleep quality. I shower every night before bed now,” he said.

As a next step, the research team is working with UT’s Office of Technology Commercialization in the hopes of designing a commercially viable bed with the UT-patented Selective Thermal Stimulation Technology that allows thermoregulatory function to be manipulated on demand and dual zone temperature-controlled bed. The bed can be tailored to maintain an individual’s optimum temperatures throughout the night.
