Dixmoor Mayor Wants to Improve Village’s Infrastructure

THEIR DEBT CHICAGO – The City of Chicago announced it has filed a civil complaint in the Circuit Court of Cook County against Monarch Legal, Strategic Financial Solutions, and Timothy Burnette, the head of Monarch Legal, for running a fraudulent debt resolution scheme that preys on hardworking Chicagoans struggling to pay off debt.

The Defendants portray themselves as a legitimate business that negotiates with creditors to resolve consumer debt for less than the amount owed and defends consumers from creditor lawsuits. But instead, Defendants engaged in unfair and deceptive business practices such as deploying misleading marketing tactics, collecting exorbitant up-front and monthly fees, and refusing to provide the legal services that consumers pay for. The City is seeking injunctive, monetary, and equitable relief for violations of the Municipal Code.

The City’s complaint alleges the Defendants lure consumers into their debt resolution program by making false promises about their refund policy, misrepresenting the amount of money consumers will save in the program, and tricking consumers into believing that attorneys will negotiate their settlements when that work is actually performed by non-lawyer contractors. In addition, consumers told the City that Defendants refused to represent them in court when sued by a creditor, leaving consumers who had paid for legal services to defend themselves in court.

The lawsuit claims the Defendants violate and continue to violate consumer protection laws and is asking the court to stop the Defendants from engaging in debt resolution activity in the City and assess fines for violations of the Chicago Municipal Code.

The City is represented in this lawsuit by in-house counsel from the Affirmative Litigation Division in its Department of Law. If any Chicago resident wishes to inform the City about their experience with Monarch Legal or other debt resolution programs, email consumerprotection@cityofchicago.org.

2022 CREAM OF THE CROP PHOTO CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced the winners of the 2022 Cream of the Crop Photo Contest, which encourages young photographers to share their vision of agriculture in our state.

Students who participated submitted up to two photos, and a panel of judges selected the winning entries.

The contest consisted of three age categories — ages 8-10, 11-14 and 15-18. Top winners were awarded Bright Start scholarship funds, with first-place winners in each age category receiving $1,000, second-place winners receiving $500, and third-place winners receiving $250. The winning students were permitted to receive one scholarship award.

The Cream of the Crop Photo Contest is part of the Ag Invest program in the treasurer’s office.

Ag Invest is one of the nation’s largest agricultural linked deposit programs, and it helps hundreds of Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals.

Through Ag Invest, the treasurer’s office partners with eligible financial institutions to offer farmers and ag businesses annual and long-term low-interest loans that can be used for operating costs, equipment purchases, construction-related expenses, and livestock purchases.

This latest incident is just another series of water woes the Village has experienced within the last 12 months.

In 2021, Dixmoor was without water from Oct. 16 to Nov. 3 due to a leak that disabled the system from filling the water storage tank. In April, the Village of Dixmoor received $2 million for a new water main project and water infrastructure repairs. The money was received with the help of a partnership between federal, county and village officials.

Roberts said the water main project includes running a new water main from the water station, down to 139th Street on Leavitt.

The main will be turned into a 12-inch. The new water main will feed all of Dixmoor’s trailer parks and some of the businesses in that area, as well as a halfway house. The plan is for pipes that currently run under I-57 to become one unit and come around I-57, instead of coming under the interstate. Roberts said this was the main part of the problem when Dixmoor was without water during those days in 2021.

“The infrastructure out here is over 100 years old.

It’s crumbling and bursting everywhere,” Roberts said.

“Whenever a 12-inch bursts, it affects the whole town.”

Roberts estimates that it would cost $25 million to begin to fix all the infrastructure issues the Village

has. The pipes were never replaced, Roberts said, just patched. He described it as “putting a band-aid on it.”

Roberts added, with the trains, which are heavier than they were in the past, and the frequency of the trains coming through the Village, the water pipe on Roby has been broken in 10 places already.

Roberts has been the Mayor since May 2021.

Before that, Roberts said there were issues with the water infrastructure but because there wasn’t an audit conducted during the previous administration, certain issues were not addressed. Roberts said his administration had to pretty much start from scratch.

While the 2020 Census estimated there were 3,570 people in the Village of Dixmoor, Roberts estimates there are more than 4,000 residents in the Village.

Roberts doesn’t mind saying there are issues with the water infrastructure in the Village because he wants those issues to be addressed. He wants the State of Illinois, Cook County and federal government to provide the funding that is necessary to make the improvements to the infrastructure.

“Spread the money out kind of equally, where we can all get a piece and get some work done in our communities,” Roberts said. Roberts is asking the residents of Dixmoor to be patient, while he and the Board of Trustees, as well as his staff work to move the town forward.

COOK COUNTY, Ill. -- Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller was recognized with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen services for residents.

NACo recognized Commissioner Miller for her development of a countywide CPR and AED awareness and training campaign for all Cook County employees that was formed as a result of legislation championed by Commissioner Miller. The program also expanded access to “Hands-Only or Bystander” CPR/AED training programs to assist in reducing incidents of death due to cardiac arrest or heart attack, both in the workplace and at home.

Nationally, awards are given in 18 different categories that reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. SIMS TO HOST ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL FESTIVAL IN CHESTERFIELD State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. will host his annual back to school festival in August, joined by co-hosts State Representative Nick Smith and Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore.

When Commissioner Miller first took office, she helped implement in-person CPR and AED training.

However, due to the pandemic, in-person training had to be put on hold. In February of 2021, a virtual “Hands-Only” CPR training program was developed in conjunction with Cook County Human Resources and the American Heart Association, which was made available for all newly hired and current Cook County employees. The virtual training launched on Cook County’s virtual training platform that same month.

Hundreds of employees along with elected officials and department heads have taken part in the “Hands-Only” CPR/AED training including the Cook County Board President and staff, members of the Board of Commissioners and staff, and executives and staff from agencies of separately elected officials and Cook County Health.

This effort is particularly important for African Americans, who have higher instances of heart disease, but are less likely to have bystander CPR performed when suffering from cardiac arrest. Nearly half of all non-Hispanic African American adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, but are 30-50% less likely to have bystander CPR performed than white adults. Having CPR initiated by a bystander when someone is suffering from cardiac arrest can almost double the chances of survival.

Clerk of the Circuit Court Iris Y. Martinez is launching a remote language interpretation service on the website starting today. The remote language service offers up to 200 languages. The top 50 languages spoken throughout Chicagoland are available on a drop down menu at the top of the webpage, with an additional 150 languages available upon request.

The website’s homepage will feature a tab with a translator icon on the top right corner labeled Need Language Service that users can click to access the service. Once a user selects a language, they can type their question in their native language and receive assistance in that language.

The interpretation and translation services are provided by InLingo interpreters and translator, and funded through a grant by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts.

FOSTER, OBERNOLTE BIPARTISAN DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ACCOUNTABILITY BILL PASSES HOUSE The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by Chairman Bill Foster (D-IL) and Ranking Member Jay Obernolte (R-CA) of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight. The bipartisan Cost-Share Accountability Act of 2022 would bolster the Department of Energy’s accountability to Congress and the public when awarding funding grants.

While most Department of Energy projects require cost-sharing by their grant recipients, these requirements can be reduced or even eliminated in certain instances. This legislation would increase accountability by requiring the department to make public and submit to Congress quarterly reports on the use of its authority to modify or bypass the statutory cost-sharing requirement.

“For Congress to fulfill our oversight responsibilities, we must be able to access information on how our departments and agencies are operating,” said Foster. “Cost-sharing requirements help protect the use of federal funds at the Department of Energy. As the department continues their next-generation research and development, it’s critical Congress understands how cost-sharing is implemented in support of their projects.”

Who would have expected the movies to be right in predicting the future? We have drones delivering packages, trains that practically fly, and cars that can drive themselves. Electric vehicles are one of the technological advancements that were also predicted in fiction. However, the features these cars have are things not usually seen in films, television, or books.

Electric cars have always been viewed as luxury cars. The negative connotation behind luxury is that it is expensive.

However, Chevy has been doing work to create electric vehicles that the average person can afford while also encompassing futuristic features that are found in luxury vehicles.

Chevy’s Bolt (EUV) electric utility vehicle is an amazingly crafted electric vehicle. With a sleek outer body and a luxurious feel inside and out, it comes in seven different stylish colors.

The Bolt EUV, like all of Chevy’s electric cars, while being luxurious, is still very affordable. This comes as a surprise, seeing how many cool features the car has.

I had the opportunity to experience the many features of the Chevy’s EUV Bolt for a week. I can say this car is amazing.

Aside from already being cool because

it is an electric vehicle, it runs smooth. The car I usually drive is so loud that I can hear nearly everything under the hood. With the EUV Bolt, I hear absolutely nothing. A pen could drop on the carpet of the car, and I’d hear it.

Not to mention a host great features; the car has 200 horsepower and wireless phone compatibility. The stand-out feature for me is the EUV Bolt’s super cruise feature. The Super cruise feature is an advanced driver assistance technology that allows drivers to drive hands-free. It is a feature that you would not expect in such an affordable car.

The Super cruise feature uses advanced technology to not only drive the EUV Bolt but do it safely across 200,000 compatible roads in the United States. Super cruise uses Connected Services * and uses real-time precise positioning cameras, sensors, and LiDAR map data to help detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes comfortable.

The Super cruise has a sub-feature called adaptive cruise control. Adaptive cruise control uses state-of-the-art technology to automatically maintain a driver-selected distance from the detected vehicle you’re following.

Another amazing thing about Super cruise is that it is very easy to use. First, engage the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

by using the steering wheel button. When Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol on the dashboard will be green with a speed shown.

Another sub-feature of Super cruise is the Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking. This feature is a safeguard for when other drivers are not being responsible. The Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking uses radar to help you avoid or reduce the severity of a front-end collision.

The Super cruise also has lane centering.

The Lane-Centering Detection features detects curves with real-time cameras, sensors, and GPS. When Super Cruise detects you are on a compatible road, paying sufficient attention, and all other driving conditions are met, then a white Super Cruise symbol will display on the dashboard.

When it is safe to do so, press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel to engage the feature. Once the steering wheel light bar turns green, you may remove your hands from the steering wheel.

To turn off Super Cruise, press the Super Cruise button again, press the brake pedal or pull the Regen on Demand paddle.

BRONZEVILLE JAZZ FEST WILL TAKE PLACE AUG. 6 CHICAGO – On Saturday, Aug. 6, Martin Luther King Drive from 39th to 37th will be alive with music during the Bronzeville Neighborhood Jazz Fest. The project included an outdoor area for entertaining, outdoor kitchen, spacious patio with a custom concrete fire pit, oversized ceiling fans, ample storage and landscaping complete with native plants around the perimeter.

“By working on this project, we learned how important it is to take a holistic look at what clients are trying to accomplish with their renovations,” said Thomas Boyce, president of Boyce Design & Contracting. “Often with outdoor living projects, designers and contractors look at the exterior of the home in isolation. We learned to look at how the interior and exterior of the home connect to each other to make sure the features and floor plan flow and work well together. By taking this approach,

we were able to achieve a better finished product that is more functional and attractive for our clients.”

Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living $100,000-$250,000 A young, active family was looking to create a distinct

outdoor living space with multiple entertainment spaces that tied in with the existing aesthetic and elevated the home amongst its neighbors. The low-maintenance backyard now features an outdoor dining area, sunken living room, entertainment area and additional storage space built with the

home’s current architectural features while also maintaining a large enough yard for the kids and their friends to play.

“The aesthetic of the outdoor areas was designed not only for function but also to reflect the interiors and keep the inside-outside living feeling continuous,” said Tim Johnson, owner and founder of Livit Site + Structure.

“For example, the shiplap used on the fire table is the same shiplap featured inside the home. Likewise, the Douglas fir timbers used on the pergola are the same as the interior ceiling beams.”

Residential Landscape Design/Outdoor Living Over $250,000 A 4,000-square-foot project built at four different elevations, this client wanted to include a safe way to move from the upper level to the backyard without coming through the house, a structure for shade and protection from mosquitoes and a pool with features that reflected the home. Adding a covered screen room with individually controlled wall panels, seethrough fireplace, fountain, pool with sheer descent waterfalls, recycled rock walls and staircase from the upper elevation while enclosing it all within a stone wall met those expectations.

“A sound piece of advice for anyone building anything in the backyard: get a plan,” said Ken DePratt, owner of KD Poolscapes, Ltd. “Have it match your expectations list. Then, and only then, will you know if it matches your budget. We would recommend doing your research when taking on a pool project of any size. It’s hard to push that hole around once it’s dug.”

ENA Lantern Award Shines Spotlight on Incredible Work of 29 Emergency Departments SCHAUMBURG, Ill., PRNewswire -- On Wednesday, July 13, the Emergency Nurses Association announced 29 emergency departments being honored with the prestigious ENA Lantern Award – the only award dedicated to showcasing EDs for their outstanding work.

There are many noteworthy accomplishments from this year’s honorees including improved collaboration between nurses and physicians; developing new flow areas in response to the COVID-19 pandemic; creating a simulation program to help emergency nurses better prepare for pediatric patients; and undertaking a significant quality improvement project to create a more age friendly emergency department.

New Black-focused Social Prescribing Project aims to improve health in Black communities TORONTO, CNW - The Black Health Committee, a committee of the Alliance for Healthier Communities in Ontario, is launching a new Black-focused Social Prescribing Project. The project will take a holistic approach to improve the health of people in Black communities.

In Canada and in Ontario, anti-Black racism is entrenched in societal systems and structures and impacts access for millions of Black people to education, housing, employment, healthcare and other resources.

The COVID-19 pandemic amplified existing disparities for Black communities; those impacts have been disproportionately felt by Black and racialized communities. A July 2020 study found that Black and racialized people make up 83% of COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario.

Social prescribing is an approach to healthcare that can bridge gaps between social and clinical models of health.

Using the trusted process of writing a prescription, social prescribing allows health providers to refer patients to

community-based programs that are co-created according to each client’s interests, goals, and gifts. In Ontario, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and other community-based primary health care organizations offer inter-professional and community services as part of their models of care, as they have for decades.

The goal of the Black Social Prescribing project is to develop a model of social prescribing grounded in Black and Afrocentric values and principles, and an approach that focuses on supporting Black families and children in Ontario.

“As a Community Health Centre focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Black communities in the Greater Toronto Area, we are excited to participate in the Black Social Prescribing Project as an essential model of integrated service that will be culturally affirming and based on the lived experiences of Black communities for improving their health and wellbeing,” said Liben Gebremikael, Executive Director at TAIBU Community Health Centre, who also

serves as Chair of the Board of the Alliance for Healthier Communities.

The majority of CHCs involved in the project are Black-led and offer clinical services, physiotherapy, counselling, mental health and addictions support, diabetes management and more. Through these community-governed primary health care organizations and their providers, the Black Social Prescribing project aims to address social determinants of health, such as food security, income security, education and social connections.

The Alliance for Healthier Communities previously piloted social prescribing initiatives across 11 community health centres in Ontario, representing a diversity of urban, rural, northern, and francophone communities. The results were very promising, with clients reporting 49% decrease in sense of loneliness, 19% increase in involvement in social activities, 12% increase in self-reported sense of mental health, and increased sense of belonging.

The Black Social Prescribing Project, which is funded by the Balsam Foundation, will be implemented over the next two and a half years in four CHCs: Somerset West CHC in Ottawa, as well as Rexdale CHC, TAIBU CHC and Black Creek CHC, all located in Toronto.

Recipe courtesy of the North Carolina SweetPotato Commission Servings: 4 2 North Carolina sweetpotatoes 1/2 head purple cabbage 1 tablespoon olive oil salt, to taste pepper, to taste 6 tablespoons poppyseed dressing, divided 1 tablespoon chopped parsley 2 cups grape tomatoes, halved 3 tablespoons feta cheese, crumbled Preheat grill to 400 F. Scrub and wash sweetpotatoes. Cut each into six wedges. (If sweetpotatoes are long, consider cutting wedges in half.) Parboil sweetpotatoes 5 minutes, drain and cool 5 minutes.

Shred cabbage into thin slices.

Toss sweetpotatoes with olive oil and salt and pepper, to taste.

Place sweetpotato wedges on grill perpendicular to grates over direct heat; grill about 3 minutes on each side, or until tender-crisp with grill marks on each side. Remove from grill and set aside.

In zip-top bag or large bowl, toss cabbage with 4 tablespoons poppyseed dressing until coated. Add parsley and tomatoes; toss.

To serve, place sweetpotato wedges on bed of dressed cabbage and drizzle with remaining poppyseed dressing then sprinkle with cheese.

Serve warm or cold.
