ILLINOIS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF CACFP FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019 The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently announced the availability of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) for fiscal year 2019. CACFP is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by ISBE as part of a suite of programs to provide children and families access to healthy meals.

“The Child and Adult Care Food Program ensures children in day care and after-school programs who may not otherwise have regular access to healthy food are getting the proper nutrition they need to fuel their developing bodies and brains,” said State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith, Ph.D. “More than one in 10 people in Illinois, a third of them children, are food insecure. Physical health and nutrition affect our ability to learn, focus, and grow.

ISBE is proud to administer nutrition programs that help ensure all children have what they need to thrive.”

DENTAL MISSION OF MERCY BRINGS SMILES TO THOSE IN NEED The Illinois State Dental Society Foundation opened its doors to a giant, two-day free dental clinic at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield recently, with the goal of treating underserved patients in dire need of dental care. At the Mission of Mercy, or “MOM,” more than 600 children and adults each received around $1,000 worth of free dental treatment on day one of this charitable event.

During the two-day free clinic, more than 1,000 volunteers from Illinois provided basic dental care to patients in need. The team of volunteers included dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, dental students, pharmacists, and a large group of other volunteers.

Both adults and children received care.

DUCKWORTH, MURRAY AND 20 COLLEAGUES INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO END THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S PRACTICE OF DETAINING AND SHACKLING PREGNANT WOMEN U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and 20 of their colleagues introduced the Stop Shackling and Detaining Pregnant Women Act this week to protect the health and well-being of pregnant and young women in custody by establishing new standards of care and transparency and prohibiting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from shackling pregnant women in its custody.

“The Trump Administration’s practice of shackling and detaining pregnant women must stop immediately,” said Duckworth. “This policy puts mothers and their infants at risk while also denying these women the essential maternal care they deserve.

I’m proud to join Senator Murray and 20 colleagues in introducing this legislation that will set new standards for the treatment of pregnant and young women in detention.”

In May, the Illinois legislature passed a similar bill to keep pregnant women out of jail while awaiting trial for nonviolent offenses.

13 Communities Come Together To Demand Accountability For Opioid Crisis Continued from page 1

A recent lawsuit filed in the Cook County Circuit Court names 13 municipalities and one fire department as plaintiffs in a case against several national pharmaceutical companies and three Illinois doctors alleging that they are the responsible parties for the rise in opioid addiction and overdose in Illinois.

The City of Harvey, Village of Broadview, Village of Chicago Ridge, Village of Dolton, Village of Hoffman Estates, Village of Maywood, Village of Marionette Park, Village of North Riverside, Village of Orland Park, City of Peoria, Village of Posen, Village of River Grove, Village of Stone Park and the Orland Fire Protection District have all come together to press charges against numerous opioid manufacturers, distributors, and three Illinois doctors who together ran a pain management clinic in Riverside that the lawsuit alleges was a “Pill Mill” responsible for prescribing enormous quantitates of opioids.

The lawsuit has categorized the defendants into three groups,

manufacturing defendants, (the entities responsible for the research and development of prescription opioids), the distributor defendants (the entities that were responsible for facilitating the production and distribution of opioid medications to pill prescribers) and the prescriber defendants (three Illinois doctors who operated Melrose Park Clinic, Ltd.) also known as Riverside Pain Management, which allegedly overprescribed opioids to their patients.

“Generally speaking, it’s our position that the manufacturers and the distributors engaged in a concerted effort to misrepresent the nature and the addictiveness of opioids and they effectively created an epidemic that was entirely avoidable and now communities and other entities are left to deal with the aftermath,” said Alfred Murray, senior litigation counsel for Edelson PC and one of the attorneys representing the plaintiffs.

Purdue Pharma L.P. is one of the manufacturer defendants named in the Illinois lawsuit and has denied the claims against them and said they are also concerned about the national opioid crisis.

“We vigorously deny the allegations

in these lawsuits. The jurisdictions are claiming that Purdue acted improperly by communicating with prescribers about scientific and medical information that FDA has expressly considered and continues to approve. We believe it is inappropriate for these jurisdictions to substitute their judgment for the judgment of the regulatory, scientific and medical experts at FDA. We look forward to presenting our substantial defenses to these claims,” Purdue Pharma said in a written statement.

Regardless of who is to blame, the opioid crisis has devastated communities across America and proven that no city is safe from its reach, and that fact holds true for Illinois as well.

“The pharmaceutical companies and those who have been involved in overprescribing opioids must be held accountable for the devastation their actions have caused. I am proud to be a part of the group of city leaders taking action to lead the fight against opioid addiction. We must protect others from those who would place profits over people,” said Riley H. Rogers, Mayor of the Village of Dolton.

Thornton Township Holds July 2018 Annual Stepper’s Family Cook-out and Dance Party South Holland, Ill. - Thornton Township President Frank M. Zuccarelli and its Board of Trustees co-hosted the July 2018 World’s Largest Stepper’s Family Cook-out and Dance Party.

The host, Ken Bedford, stated that this was the 7th year for this event and presented an award to Frank M. Zuccarelli and Thornton Township for their support.

Thornton Township Trustee Gerald “Jerry” Jones accepted the award on behalf of President Frank M. Zuccarelli and said, “Thornton Township has been a major supporter of the Annual Stepper’s event for the last 7 years. Frank Zuccarelli was awarded the award for Thornton Township supporting the event. It was a well-received award and the township will continue to support it. This event enriches the community and its quality.”

Ken Bedford stated that there were several thousand people in attendance, and Trustee Jones said that there was no violence at this event. “Everyone that was at the event had a fantastic time. [Illinois Secretary of State] Jesse White was there and the Jesse White Tumblers performed.

“Ken Bedford ran an awesome event,” said Jones.

Black Workers Need “Real” Not “Fake” Paid Family Leave

When Dorcas, a home health aide living in New York, learned of her mother’s illness, she used most of her vacation time to fly home and care for her. After a few weeks her leave was exhausted and tragically she could no longer afford to be with her mother in the final days of her illness. In the end, Dorcas was forced to take unpaid leave, and return to Florida, arriving just hours before her mother passed away.

Dorcas counts every penny and the unpaid time resulted in a mountain of unpaid bills and financial challenges that lingered well into the following year. Dorcas weathered that storm.

But she says, “it still pains me that I wasn’t able to be with my mom during her last days.”

Dorcas’ story is one of many shared in the Family Values@Work story collection.

Dorcas’ story exemplifies a crushing dilemma that many Black women workers face every day when caring for themselves or a family member. Life shouldn’t be this way but it is the reality for far too many in the United States.

Committee’s Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy Subcommittee held a hearing on paid family leave that featured two very different policy options.

The “real” policy is the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act that creates a national insurance program to fund the time needed to welcome a new baby, address one’s own health issue, or the serious health issue of a family member. It also includes time for certain military families’ care giving purposes.

Employees, employers and selfemployed workers would fund both the benefits and the administrative costs of the program by contributing a small amount in each pay period to a

self-sustaining fund.

The FAMILY Act builds on programs in California, New Jersey, and Rhode Island and with the newest programs being implemented in New York, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Massachusetts.

The “fake” paid family leave option, restricts participation to only leave for parents of a new child and diverts social security funds to pay for the program. U.S. Senators Joni Ernst (Iowa), Mike Lee (Utah) and Marco Rubio (Florida) plan to introduce legislation covering only the birth or adoption of a child.

This deeply flawed proposal will require people to borrow against their social security accounts, delaying

their retirement date or receiving a decreased retirement benefit. For most Black women, social security makes up at least half of their income stream during retirement, according to the 2014 Black Women in the United States report by the Black Women’s Roundtable.

This proposal would result in even smaller social security, death or disability benefits, making the retirement security of older Black women, even more, precarious than it is currently.

Any paid family leave proposal that ignores the caregiving responsibilities that families are facing for older relatives is outdated. According to the AARP Policy Institute, each year, 40 million American adults assist loved ones with tasks of daily living.

Family members are helping with eating and bathing; household chores; and nursing tasks so people can age in place. Surprisingly, of these 40 million family caregivers, about 25 percent are millennials, between the ages of 18 -34 years old. One in three employed millennial family caregivers earn less than $30,000 per year - that includes nearly 30 percent of Black family caregivers.

We urge policymakers to deliver paid family leave programs that fit

the times and their constituents’ diverse needs. Black workers and their families need and deserve #RealPaidLeave. Our nation deserves nothing less.

While in her early forties, Tucker shared caregiving responsibilities for her mother, who was living with Parkinson’s disease, with her young sibling, while being the parent to an elementary age child and working fulltime. A few years later, she was back in the caregiving role to her sibling for eighteen months.

The Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) was established in 1983 as the women and girls empowerment arm of the National Coalition for Black Civic Participation, BWR is comprised of a diverse group of Black women civic leaders representing national, regional, state-based and international organizations and institutions.

Surgeons and their teams call on Rauner to sign SB 2419 Surgeons and their surgical teams from across the state are calling on Governor Rauner to sign SB 2419, which will insure national certification is maintained when surgical first assistants and surgical technologists renew their licensure with the State of Illinois.

“Surgical first assistants act as the right hand man to a surgeon, in a role historically filled by another physician or resident. As more complex surgeries began being performed at community hospitals and the number of hours overtime hours a resident worked became more restricted, the demand for highly trained surgical assistants exploded,” explained Illinois Surgical Assistant Association James Presley.

Many surgical assistants, like Pressley, are veterans who received their initial training as surgical assistants while working as medics in the military.

Surgical assistants and technologists have been regulated through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation since 2003. In order to obtain a state license, an individual has to have graduated from an approved medical education program and be certified by a

national accrediting body in surgical assisting or surgical technology, which requires them to complete so many hours in surgery, complete an approved medical education program and pass a national exam.

“However there was a glitch in the law, in that the original intent was that surgical assistants and technologists have to be certified to obtain their initial license AND to maintain that certification in order to renew the license, however the renewals process was set by administrative rule and maintaining that certification is not currently required by the State, which could put patient safety at tremendous risk,” said State Representative Dan Burke (D-Chicago), who sponsored the original legislation to regulate the professions and is the house sponsor of SB 2419.

“To not require a profession, that has such intricate patient contact and requires such complex skills, to stay abreast of their field, is bad public policy. Surgical robotics has evolved exponentially over the past 15 years and I rely on surgical assistants to perform my most complicated cases,” said Dr. Francisco Garcini, who performs robotic gynecologic procedures at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

“Without proper sterilization techniques in the operating room, patient infections can easily occur can quickly escalate. Surgical technologists prepare the operating room (including the sterile field) along with the surgical instrumentation and supplies, as well as pass instrumentation and prepare and manage surgical equipment during surgery,” explained Chris Topel, Director of the Surgical Technology Program at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.

“However once they pass their initial certifying exam, technology continues to change and it is important that surgical technologists continue to learn throughout their careers. The continuing education that ongoing certification requires will insure this, otherwise, without it, the State is just attesting to the fact that they paid for their renewal, with no enhanced knowledge.”

“Surgical skill is of great importance with assistance in surgical cases, as unforeseen complications can develop quickly. I have had many difficult procedures that likely wouldn’t have ended as well if it had not been for the skill of my surgical assistant. We urge the Governor to sign SB 2419,” said Dr. Tracy

Vera, an OB/GYN who uses surgical assistants on a variety of cases at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, including cesareans, and gynecologic surgeries such as laparoscopies and hysterectomies.

“The general public can’t pick their surgical assistants and they should be certified regularly as are other medical specialties. They are a key component of the medical care team,” added Dr. Rebecca Kuo-Ryan, an orthopedic spine surgeon who practices at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and Morris Hospital.

“People only come in contact with Surgical Assistants when they or their loved ones are unconscious during surgery,” said chief sponsor of SB 2419, Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake), “We need to insure that the whole surgical team is up to speed on the latest technological advances.”

Ellene V. Miles Hired As Senior VP Intersectional Marketing Sony Pictures Entertainment has brought on marketing vet Ellene V. Miles to join the Motion Picture Group’s marketing team in the newly carved out position of SVP Intersectional Marketing. The announcement was made

by Andre Caraco, co-president of domestic marketing.

Miles, who will report to Caraco, will work across all of the group’s marketing operations to

How Many Americans are Finding Affordable Housing With the cost of housing continuing to rise faster than wages, it’s no wonder that many Americans nationwide are struggling to make ends meet. Luckily, solutions already exist to address the affordable housing shortage, say experts. For example, more than 22 million people in the U.S. now live in manufactured housing -- homes built to a federal standard in factories and placed on a homeowner’s land or on rented lots in manufactured home communities, according to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). In many parts of the country, homes like these are the least expensive kind of housing available without a government subsidy. The cost to buy a manufactured home averages about $70,600, compared with $286,000 for a single-family site-built home, not including land costs. In response to

growing market demand, almost 93,000 new manufactured homes were built in the U.S. in 2017, an approximate 15 percent increase over 2016, according to MHI, but this is still not nearly enough to meet the nation’s affordable housing needs, according to experts. Advocates say that zoning restrictions and other rules and regulations in many areas are preventing manufactured housing from closing the gap -as certain jurisdictions only allow manufactured housing in locations far from town centers and

other jurisdictions have considered banning them altogether. “Part of this bias may be based on the negative stereotype of earlier generations of manufactured housing, however, today, our homes are built with quality construction materials to meet rigorous federal standards for safety, installation and construction,” says Richard Jennison, president and CEO of MHI. This annual outside-theclassroom mentoring program is scheduled for March 21-24, 2019, at the Walt Disney Resort in Florida. The program helps 100 select high school students, ages 13-19, from across the United States jump-start their life goals and pursue their dreams.

Disney Dreamers Academy turns the entire magical setting of Walt Disney World into a vibrant classroom. Students participate in a series of sessions and workshops designed to help them imagine bright futures, make exciting discoveries and learn how to put their goals into action. Disney Dreamers engage in a wide variety of experiences at Walt Disney World while working side by side with celebrities, community and industry leaders and Disney cast members.

For more than a decade, Disney Dreamers Academy has inspired young people from across the country by fueling their dreams and showing them a world of possibilities as they prepare for the future.

Each year, students participate in handson, immersive career seminars in a wide range of disciplines found at Walt Disney World. Participants learn how to improve

their communication skills, what it means to be a leader and networking strategies, among other skills. They are also inspired by celebrity speakers and other special guests who share their stories and provide insights on how to achieve their life goals.

The second decade of Disney Dreamers Academy is focused on challenging young people to relentlessly pursue their dreams through the “Be 100” campaign.

This promotional push is inspired by the powerful impact Disney Dreamers Academy has made on graduates, who have gone on to become doctors, nurses, engineers, pilots, journalists and more. Some have started their own public relations firms, while others have worked with national political leaders.

Where: GPS only: 3N016 Garfield Road Campton Hills, IL 60175 Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 5th from 9am – 1pm. This is the only joint show by these two organizations in the mid-west open to the public. Typically, over 30 different collectors will have their tools on display and for sale.

Garfield Farm Museum established this annual show to help educate the public with the realities of America’s founding. Hand tools were what built and shaped America. In the 1840s as factories arose, handcrafted items became massed produced but not in the way mass production is envisioned today. The hand tools that individual craftsmen used simply transitioned to the early factories.

Waterpower might have made it possible for a number of lathes to be powered at once but hand tools were used to make any turnings. Blacksmiths were becoming old school in the mid-19th century, as the profession of mechanic became the high tech of its day. Mechanics for the steam age to manufacture as well as maintain locomotives and lake and ocean going steamers needed even more specialized hand tools to produce the precision needed.

Tool and die makers became the top hand tool workers of the 19th and early 20th century.

Their inventiveness and skills would create the power tools that society depends upon today.

Appropriately, some of the most avid collectors one can meet at the Antique Tool Show are retired highly skilled tool and die makers. Many are the last generation to use hand tools and the first to use computerized machines to make the complex machines of mass production today.

Yet fine craftsmanship has not disappeared as thousands of hobbyists that enjoy working with wood, avidly seek out antique tools. Such tools that might be made of higher quality materials than what can be found on the market today or are no longer made but are still needed to reproduce certain designs or affects in furniture. The Antique Tool Show is thus an opportunity to talk with such experienced individuals who might have worked with the type of tool one purchases.

The public is invited to bring a tool they cannot identify as many of the collectors will know the answer. Opportunities at the show to become a member of the organizations will give access to their regional and national meetings.

Tours of the 1846 teamster inn and tavern begin at 11 a.m. and continue after the show until 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

Admission for adults is $6 and $2 for children 12 years and under. Garfield Farm Museum is a historically intact former prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored by volunteers as a 1840s working farm.
