DURBIN HONORS JUSTICE JOHN PAUL STEVENS ON SENATE FLOOR In a speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, recently honored the life of Justice John Paul Stevens who passed away on July 16 at the age of 99. Justice Stevens served on the Supreme Court for nearly 35 years.

Justice Stevens was born and raised in Chicago. He attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class. In between, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He practiced law in Chicago and served on the Chicago-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit prior to his 1975 appointment to the Supreme Court, according to a press release.

Local philanthropist and business owner, Early Walker, recently announced on Facebook that he was looking for a local student who needed a financial sponsor and mentor for the upcoming school year. After receiving an overwhelming response of nominations for children who could use this kind of support, Walker put out the call to other Chicago-area business owners and created the I Promise Back To School Challenge.

The I Promise Back To School Challenge encourages community leaders and business owners to unite and embrace local children by providing them with school supplies, new shoes, a winter coat, help with registration fees, new uniforms, and anything else they might need throughout the school year.

“The I Promise Challenge is pretty much an individual sponsoring a child and making sure that child is ready for his or her first day of school and the first week of school. Often-

times, the challenges that a lot of parents face in getting their child to school that first week, especially the first day, are because of financial reasons. I felt that if I could get enough people involved we could help with that particular issue,” said Walker.

Since publicly releasing the I Promise Challenge, Walker said that he has had over 100 people take the pledge to support a child in need as they prepare for their first day of school this year. There are business owners, local politicians, clergy members, professional athletes, and community leaders who have all promised to sponsor a child this year, according to Walker.

In addition to providing financial support to children in need, Walker is asking that all of the sponsors also commit to mentoring the student indefinitely, escort the child to school on their first day, participate in a career day for the student, and sponsor a school activity sometime during the year.

“We have a violence epidemic right now and a lot of these kids need guidance and

mentorship. There are a lot of kids living in single-parent homes and some who don’t even have their biological parents and are living in foster homes. Just from being in the community and speaking of some of these kids, I’ve seen that they need guidance. They need some type of leadership and mentorship where they can pick the phone up and ask someone what they would do in a certain situation. That type of mentorship can go a long way with a child that doesn’t have any type of leadership,” said Walker.

Originally, Walker was seeking children who had lost a parent to gun violence but since he has received such an abundance of sponsors who are willing to take the pledge to support a student this school year, he has opened up the nominations for both children who lack a parent due to tragedy and also all children who come from low-income and impoverished families.

Young Non-Profit Founder Hosts Annual Back To School Bash In South Suburbs

You Matter 2 Inc., a local nonprofit serving south suburban youth, will soon be hosting its 4th annual Back To School Bash on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 W. Ridge Rd., in Homewood. During the event, free school supplies will be given away and there will be food and games for families to enjoy.

You Matter 2 Inc. was founded

by Destiny Watson, a Homewood Flossmoor High School graduate, when she was just 16 years old.

The mission of the organization is to inspire and empower youth to be world changers and the organization works with 7th to 12th grade students who are interested in changing the world.

“You Matter 2 Inc. is a nonprofit organization that works with 7th through 12th grade students in the south suburban area of Chicago,” said Watson. “We work with these youth to get them involved in community service, learning about local and global issues, as well as allowing them to plan volunteer events for the community and educate the community.”

The Back to School Bash is one of several community events that You Matter 2 Inc. hosts every year and it is open for kindergarten through 12th grade students. No need-based

Having graduated from Homewood Flossmoor High School, Watson realized that even though many suburban communities are seen as being well off, there are still a significant amount of people who struggle with meeting some of their basic needs.

“I graduated from Homewood

Flossmoor and I’ve been in the district pretty much my whole life and I think there is a stereotype around suburban areas often being seen as being super wealthy,” said Watson.

“I think we tend to forget the people that may not be as wealthy as the person next door and school supplies can be very expensive, especially for people who have multiple kids. We just want to do anything that we can to relieve the stress on families in our community.”

The organization is still accept-

ing donations of school supplies which can be dropped off at the Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Rd., until July 26.

The organization is also accepting monetary donations.

Landmarks Illinois Announces Historic Preservation Grant Recipients for First Half of 2019 Landmarks Illinois, the only statewide nonprofit in Illinois dedicated to helping people save historic places, has awarded $35,250 in grant funding to historic preservation projects across the state. The nine individual grants were awarded through Landmarks Illinois Preservation Heritage Fund and the Barbara C. and Thomas E. Donnelley II Preservation Fund grant programs between January and June 2019.

Individual grant amounts range from $950 to $6,000 each.

Landmarks Illinois grants provide funding to nonprofit- and government agency-led preservation projects in Illinois communities.

All grants are matching grants, which requires the recipient to raise funds equal or greater to the Landmarks Illinois grant amount.

A recent impact study revealed that, while relatively small, LI grants often serve as a catalyst for major transformation at Illinois historic sites. Every $1 a grant recipient receives from Landmarks Illinois is matched by more than $16 from other sources, according to the study.

Below are eight Perseveration Heritage Fund grants LI awarded between January and June this year. Landmarks Illinois also awarded one Donnelley Preservation Fund grant in the first half of 2019. l Save Piety Hill coalition, Rockford: $6,000 to hire a professional architectural historian to research and assess the eligibility for creating a historic district in Rockford’s Signal Hill neighborhood and other potential historic properties in Rockford. LI included Piety Hill properties on its 2019 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois.

Breast cancer is the most imperative health issue Facing African American women

Though Black women get breast cancer at a slightly lower incidence rate than white women, Black women are 42% more like to DIE of breast cancer than white women. That is an astounding number and indicative of a variety of factors, many reflecting racial disparities.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among black women, and an estimated 33,840 new cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2019. An estimated 6,540 deaths from breast cancer are expected to occur among black women in 2019.

Women do not need to DIE from breast cancer. It can’t be prevented but early stage breast cancer (meaning it has been localized within the breast) has a 99% 5 year survival rate. Note the inequity here: the overall 5-year relative survival rate for breast cancer diagnosed is 81% for black women versus 91% for white women.

And, 54% of breast cancers in black women are diagnosed at a local stage, compared to 64% in white women.

To add more fuel to the fire, Black women under age 35 get breast cancer at two times the rate of white women and DIE from breast cancer three times as often as white women.

So, what’s the problem? Why are Black women dying unnecessarily?

Higher death rates among Black women reflect the following: 1. Black women are not taking action. While

92% of black women agree breast health is important, only 25% have recently discussed breast health with their family, friends, or colleagues. And, only 17% have taken steps to understand their risk for breast cancer.

2. Black women lack information about the severity of breast cancer, breast cancer symptoms and the need for screening.

3. Black women take care of others at the expense of their own health.

4. Black Women are often at a more advanced stage upon detection.

5. Black women may not have access to health care or health insurance so may have lower frequency of and longer intervals be-

tween mammograms.

6. Because they may not have health insurance, Black women may not follow up on abnormal mammogram results because they can’t afford the diagnostic testing.

7. Black women often don’t have access to the same prompt high quality treatment that white women have. They express that they are often feel disrespected by physicians and staff 8. Black women face logistical barriers to accessing care (such as transportation issues or not being able to miss work or arrange for child care).

9. Black women fear a cancer diagnosis. l Black women have the highest odds (2 times more likely) of getting Triple Negative Breast Cancer, a kind of breast cancer that often is aggressive and comes back after treatment.

It has the highest mortality rate and is the only breast cancer sub-type that does not have a therapy to prevent recurrence. Note that younger women and women diagnosed at later stages are more likely to get Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

We Must Stop The Silence!

Early detection saves lives. Black women of all ages need to check their breasts monthly. We need to know what our “normal” feels like so if there is some abnormality, immediate action can be taken.

Black women need to understand the severity of this health crisis. We need to be talking about our health, our family histories, and

educating all of the women in our lives.

The ongoing conversations in this country around access to affordable health insurance must include acknowledgement and action regarding the inequities for Black women.

Black women need to demand the attention and care of health care professionals.

However, if you are 1 size, (just 1 size) away from getting back into a size, develop a strategy to get back into them, but keep them out of your closet until then. #3 – Recycle as a dust cloth. #4 - Find a better home within your home. #5 - Be thrilled to see your clothes!

Martin, NBC 5’s Art Norman And V103’s Crazy Howard McGee Join Former CNN TV Executive To Award Scholarships Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation awards 23 college scholarships to offer opportunity to Chicago Black males and help fight gun violence – Former television executive producer, Tenisha Taylor, is hosting the 3rd Annual Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation (ETSF) Gala and Silent Auction on Saturday, July 27 th 7 p.m. at the Hilton Chicago – Oak Lawn.

ETSF provides mentorship and scholarships to African-American male students impacted by Chicago’s gun violence. The foundation, named after Taylor’s father who was killed on Chicago’s Southside, is awarding 23 scholarships this year. The foundation has awarded more than 50 scholarships since 2017. “ My father was murdered just blocks from where First Lady Michelle Obama grew up,” says Taylor. “His life was tragically snatched by teenagers who lost their way. We must give these young people hope and opportunity, something to live for,” she adds.

Taylor’s work in the community has caught national attention in a short period.

Nationally syndicated journalist Roland S. Martin is serving as the gala’s honorary chairman. “When my friend and former CNN colleague told me she was launching this foundation, I was in full support,” says Martin.

“The need to provide a way forward for young black men who don’t have the resources to go to college is much needed. This type of support makes it possible to have stronger black families in the future,” he adds. Alderman Greg Mitchell and V103’s Crazy Howard McGee are also lending their efforts to the cause. “As a proud Grambling State University Alumnus, I am especially proud that several of the young men have chosen to attend HBCU’s such as Howard, Fisk, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Alabama A&M and Central State,” says Alderman Mitchell. “I have no doubt that each of these impressive and talented young men will achieve great success and one day mentor, empower and encourage those that follow in their footsteps.”

Hoover Coney, Jr., a rising Junior at Chicago State University, will receive the scholarship for the third year in a row. “The Ezekiel Taylor Scholarship Foundation helps young black men like me to afford college. Apostolic Faith Church Hosts 11th Annual Golf Outing to Support Local Youth Love golfing and helping others? Then, tee up and participate in the Apostolic Faith Church 11th Annual Golf Outing which funds its Summer Enrichment Program. Designed to educate and inspire students over the summer, the program is operated through Generations, the church’s 501c3 Community Development Corporation that is dedicated to helping youth strive for excellence in every aspect of their lives.

This year’s golf outing will be held on August 10, 1:00 p.m., at the Glenwoodie Golf Course, 19301 S. State Street in Glenwood, Illinois.

“Our Summer Enrichment Program continues to grow every year, based on the generous support of sponsors committed to our youth,” said Susan D. Smith, First Lady of Apostolic Faith Church and a Board Member of Generations.

“Since we started the program in 2012, we’ve served more than 1,100 youth, keeping them safe and actively engaged in ways that nurture their growth and development.”

The daylong program services youth ages 6-15 years old in a fun, educational learning environment. Students have weekly cultural field trips, and participate in sports and other physical activities, arts and crafts, and age-appropriate educational classes. STEM learning initiatives, designed to increase students’ skills in science, technology, engineering and math, are a central part of the curriculum.

In addition, students receive three healthy meals a day. Title sponsors for the 2019 golf outing are Safeway Construction Company and The George Sollitt Construction Company, who served as primary contractors for Apostolic Faith’s new, state-of-the art ministry center in Bronzeville.

The team recently completed the conversion of the church’s old main building into a multi-purpose youth center that includes classrooms. Coupled with colorful and exuberant illustrations, she hopes that, through the magic of children’s books, children will be inspired in the most positive and powerful ways.
