briefly CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND CITY COLLEGES OF CHICAGO LAUNCH STUDENT OUTREACH AND RE-ENGAGEMENT (SOAR) CENTER IN ENGLEWOOD

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) this week opened the Englewood SOAR Center at Kennedy-King College to strengthen educational opportunities and outcomes for students, ages 15-21. Through the SOAR centers, a cohort of about 20 chronically truant and out-of-school youth are provided with guidance and support over six weeks to determine the best pathways for re-engagement and high school graduation. Participants are also provided access to adult education, CCC credit, and certifications.

The Englewood location is one of four SOAR Centers in the city, strategically located in neighborhoods with the highest concentration of youth vulnerable to truancy and dropping out of school. The centers, detailed in the below table, have served more than 13,000 students since the program’s inception in 2013. The program supports students with one-on-one mentoring, workshops, transcript evaluations, and graduation planning. Stipends of $150 were made available to students who registered to join the first cohort.

MAYOR LIGHTFOOT AND CDOT CUT RIBBON ON MOTOR ROW STREETSCAPE

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gia Biagi and 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell to cut the ribbon on the recently completed streetscape project along Michigan Avenue between Cermak and 24th Place. The Motor Row streetscape implements a “road diet” that reduces the previous four travel lanes to three, reducing crossing distances for pedestrians. Other improvements include widened sidewalks, new crosswalks, new landscaping, and LED smart lighting. The enhancements encourage drivers to slow down and make it easier for pedestrians to cross safely.

The improved streetscape at Motor Row features safety improvements that help address the recent increase in traffic fatalities citywide: Reduced Pedestrian Crossing Distance — Decreasing the number of travel lanes limits pedestrians’ time exposed in the roadway and increases their visibility to drivers when crossing the street.

Improved Crosswalks — 20-foot continental crosswalk at 23rd Street helps drivers see pedestrians sooner and slow down earlier.

Decreased Travel Lanes — Reducing the number of travel lanes from 4 to 3 forces drivers to slow down when approaching the crosswalk LED Smart Lighting — New lights and hanging baskets increase visibility for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Widened Sidewalks ­— Increasing sidewalk width provides more room for pedestrians to maneuver.

The streetscape at Motor Row also features aesthetic improvements that will have a long-term impact on the surrounding community: Full-width pavement resurfacing Parkway improvements and beautification New benches, litter receptacles, and bike racks New landscaping and trees Community gateway elements and light pole identifiers Located just west of McCormick Place, Motor Row is now known as an entertainment district; however, the area was originally named Motor Row due to the high concentration of car sales and repair businesses once located along the street. To reflect that history, the design of the custom, lighted identifiers was influenced by the Art Deco and automotive styling of that era.

The nearly $11 million streetscape project, funded through two TIFs, was designed in close cooperation with a local task force and community stakeholders. Christopher B. Burke Engineering was the lead design consultant for the project, and Sumit Construction was the lead construction contractor. Duroweld fabricated the gateway community identifiers that welcome all to Motor Row. In addition to investments in infrastructure, Mayor Lightfoot and CDOT will roll out an awareness campaign encouraging drivers to slow down. The campaign, which will appear on digital billboards and social media platforms, highlights the importance of coming together to protect our neighbors and reminds drivers to “Slow Down Chicago.”

Brimm raised her daughter vegetarian. Exposing her kids to vegetables first, starting with avocado. She did that with all of her children. Presenting fruits and vegetables in fun ways.

Brimm came from a household that cooked soul food. For the past 30 years, she has cooked vegan and vegetarian soul food. Instead of cooking her greens with meat, she cooked it with olive oil, letting the juices from the greens season the dish. She also uses good fat and aromatics – shallots, garlic, onions, celery and peppers. “When you use the good fats to allow that aroma to come forth, you really can make some amazing soul food,” she said.

Brimm has seen the increase of vegan and vegetarian options in the last 30 years. In the beginning they would have to order Big Macs from McDonald’s with no meat or a Whopper from Burger King with no meat. They would go to places like Subway because they knew they could get a sandwich with lots of veggies.

“Now when you go to the supermarket there’s a huge wall of vegan milk that you could choose from, different flavors, different creaminess, different thickness, it’s amazing. Same thing with the cheese, cream cheese, those are things we didn’t have. Cream cheese, there was no such thing as vegan cream cheese over this 30-year journey, it was like a new phenomenon,” she said.

Brimm is enjoying the ride and all the vegan offerings that are available now. Brimm made her own Almond and Coconut milk and her own cheese from cashews. Brimm and other vegans can now live and shop like meat eaters.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, African Americans are 20 percent more likely to experience a serious mental illness and 25 percent more likely to experience symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. Despite these realities, fewer than one in three receive treatment.

“A recent study showed that 63 percent of Black participants believed that having a mental health issue represented a personal weakness,” says Dr. Jay Weems, Chief Mental Health Officer at MyOwnDoctor and doctorate in Clinical Psychology. “It’s difficult to improve treatment outcomes when there are so many barriers to that treatment—including barriers like shame and stigma that we construct ourselves. That concerning trend is reflected in

these other survey findings: * Young people are especially concerned about having no financial plans in place; those who say they’re worried include 95% of Gen Z-ers, 92% of millennials, 84% of Gen X-ers and 60% of baby boomers. * Nearly three in five respondents (58%) consider managing their money more mentally demanding than solving crossword puzzles. * Respondents spend an average four hours per month managing their money, and in spite of AI technology tools that could help them, 37% rely on pen-andpaper methods to do so - including 30% of Gen Z-ers and 28% of millennials. * A significant 44% reported being at least somewhat likely to dip into their savings during the first three months of 2022, and 27% said they were very likely to do so. * A full 13% of all respondents (and 19% of women respondents) say they have no savings at all from which to draw.

(BPT) - Food and gas prices continue to rise, on top of record-high housing costs in many cities across the U.S. If you’re an older adult who is already living on a tight budget, today’s inflation can be particularly difficult. Fortunately, there are programs available that can help you save money on health care, prescriptions, food, utilities and more.

One of the easiest ways to find out if you’re eligible for benefits is to visit the National Council on Aging’s BenefitsCheckUp.org. The free and confidential tool connects older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers to benefit programs. The site is easy to use, even for people with minimal digital experience.

IAMHP and State Legislators Rally Support for Behavioral Healthcare Services Recent incidents such as school shootings, the pandemic and inflation are all factors that could greatly impact mental health. Several measures, designed to improve efficiency and efficacy of behavioral health services, were approved for increased funding during the last legislative session. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gaps in healthcare services throughout the country. One such gap, which will be difficult to improve in the short term, is access to behavioral health services amid a significant provider shortage. To address this situation, IAMHP collaborated with legislators on many shared priorities during the last legislative session. “The legislature introduced and passed a number of bills that align with IAMHP’s goals of increasing equitable access to healthcare and supporting providers who treat patients with behavioral healthcare needs, said Samantha Olds Frey, CEO of the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans.

Funding for additional training, in the form of academic detailing, offers providers opportunities to enhance their level of expertise in caring for patients with behavioral health disorders. In addition, behavioral health providers will now find it easier to locate appropriate care settings for patients thanks to funding that expands a new system that tracks the availability of inpatient treatment beds. Added to these new measures are simplified billing and payment codes for behavioral health and substance use disorders.

For patients in treatment for substance use disorders, additional funds approved cover new Peer Support Services (PSS). Peer Support Services are community based and known to improve treatment outcomes. IAMHP led the initiative to gain this coverage.

Bikes & Music Announces Summer “Fun-Raiser!”

Group Ride and Cookout to Follow Online Fundraising Drive Bikes & Music, a Chicagoland 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, has a goal to raise $25,000 by August 20, 2022. The funds are needed for the repair of donated bicycles, and for the purchase of new bike helmets and locks. The bikes and equipment will be provided to children and adults in need.

Since the start of 2022, Bikes & Music has collected over 100 bicycles throughout Chicagoland. “We received a terrific response to our spring bike drive,” says Bikes & Music co-founder Ryan Gable. “We have supported organizations that are doing amazing work, like Home of the Sparrow and RefugeeOne. We’ve supplied these refurbished bikes along with helmets and locks to children and some adults that need bikes for fun but also as a mode of transportation to work and school!”

The challenge now and mission of the fundraiser is to cover the tune-ups and repairs for these bikes. When you add in the cost of helmets and locks, it takes about $100 to get each bike ready to go and into the hands of someone that desperately wants one.

Gable explains that repairing used bicycles keeps them out of landfills. “We could almost buy new bikes for what repairs and parts cost sometimes. But we are dedicated to doing the right thing for the planet by recycling bikes that just need a little love. We’re fortunate to have support from two local bike shops (Crank Revolution in Hoffman Estates and Never Ending Cycles in Streamwood) for the safety checks, maintenance and repairs. They do everything they can to keep our costs to a minimum.”

5 Ways to Help Reduce the Risk of Birth Defects (Family Features) If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, now is a perfect time to make a plan. There are steps you can take to increase your chances of having a healthy, full-term pregnancy and baby – and part of that includes learning about birth defects.

Each year, birth defects affect about 1 in 33 babies born in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mainly developing in the first three months of pregnancy as a baby’s organs form, birth defects present as structural changes and can affect one or more parts of the body. They can cause problems for a baby’s overall health, how the body develops and functions, and are a leading cause of infant death.

“It’s critical that women who are planning to conceive or are pregnant adopt healthy behaviors to reduce the chances of having a baby with birth defects, which are a leading cause of infant death,” said Dr. Zsakeba Henderson, March of Dimes senior vice president and interim chief medical and health officer.

“We also encourage these women to get the COVID-19 vaccine since high fevers caused by an infection during the first trimester can increase the risk of birth defects.”

To help prepare for a healthy pregnancy and baby, consider these tips from the experts at March of Dimes, the leading nonprofit fighting for the health of moms and babies, and the CDC: 1. Have a pre-pregnancy checkup. Before you become pregnant, visit your health care provider to talk about managing your health conditions and creating a treatment plan. Talk about all the prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements you’re currently taking.

2. Get vaccinated. Speak with your health care provider about any vaccinations you may need before each pregnancy.

Make sure your family members are also up to date on their vaccinations to help prevent the spread of diseases.

Pregnant women are at a higher risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 compared to those who have not been impacted by the infectious disease. Research shows babies of pregnant people with COVID-19 may be at an increased risk of preterm birth and other complications. High fevers caused by any infection during the first trimester of pregnancy can also increase the risk of certain birth defects.

3. Take folic acid. Folic acid is a B vitamin that prevents serious birth defects of the brain and spine. Before becoming pregnant, take a multivitamin containing 400 micrograms of folic acid every day to help ensure your baby’s proper development and growth. While pregnant, increase to 600 micrograms daily.

4. Try to reach a healthy weight. Talk to your health care provider about how to reach a healthy weight before becoming pregnant, as excess weight can affect your fertility and increase the risk of birth defects and other complications.

5. Don’t smoke, drink alcohol or use harmful substances.

Cigarettes and e-cigarettes contain harmful substances that can damage the placenta or reach the baby’s bloodstream. Smoking cigarettes can cause birth defects like cleft lip and palate.

It is also not safe to drink alcohol at any time during pregnancy. Drinking alcohol can cause serious health problems for your baby, including birth defects. Do not take opioids, which are drugs that are often used to treat pain. Opioid use during pregnancy can lead to neonatal abstinence syndrome, preterm birth and may cause birth defects. Consult your physician before stopping or changing any prescribed medications.

Blend miso, chili paste and honey; spread onto Alaska sablefish portions.

Place portions on nonstick cooking spray-coated, foil-lined baking sheet.

Roast 5-7 minutes, or until fish is opaque throughout and deep golden brown; cool slightly.

In mixing bowl, combine avocado, rice or quinoa, cucumber, radishes and ginger; pour in dressing. Toss to coat.

To serve, place about 1/3 cup vegetable-rice mixture in each lettuce leaf.

Top with one sablefish portion. Sprinkle each lettuce cup with 1 tablespoon cilantro leaves.

APPLICABLE FEDERAL REQUIREMENTS All laborers and mechanics employed by the Contractor of Subcontractor on constmction work for this Project shall be paid wages at rates not less than those prevailing on similar constmction in the locality as determined by the Secretary of Labor in accordance with the Davis-Bacon Act, as amended, (U.S. C. Sections 76-276a-5), and shall receive overtime compensation in accordance with and subject to the provisions of the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standard Act (40 U.S.C Sections 327-333), and the Contractor and Subcontractor(s) shall comply with all regulations issued pursuant to these Acts and other applicable Federal laws and regulations pertaining to labor standards. The Secretary of Labor has, with respect to the labor standard specified in this Section, the authority and functions set forth in Reorganization Plan Number 14 of 1950 (U.S.C. The successful bidder for the constrnction of the improvement will be required to file a perfonnance bond equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Executive Director of, which perfonnance bonds shall be conditioned upon proper and faithful performance by the Contractor of the work specified in accordance with the plans and specifications therefore, according to the time and terms and conditions of the contract and also that the bidder and contractor shall properly pay all debts incurred by the Contractor in the execution of the work, including those for labor and materials furnished.

The Contractor shall be required to furnish sufficient insurance or guaranty of indemnity to SMHN and the County of Cook, Illinois against any and all claims which might arise for damages to persons or property due to the negligence of the Contractor or Subcontractor(s), or their officers, agents, employees or servants, during the construction of said improvement and until the said improvement has been finally accepted as complete by the Executive Director of SMHN, the right to reject and all proposals or bids is reserved.
