AETNA BETTER HEALTH PREMIER PLAN MMAI APPROVED TO EXPAND STATEWIDE TO SERVE DUAL ELIGIBLE MEDICARE-MEDICAID CUSTOMERS ACROSS ILLINOIS Aetna®, a CVS Health® company (NYSE: CVS), recently announced it has received approval to expand its existing Illinois Medicare-Medicaid Alignment Initiative (MMAI) demonstration health plan (Aetna Better Health® Premier Plan MMAI) to serve the entire state.

The MMAI is a groundbreaking joint effort by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to reform the way care is delivered to individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid services (“dual eligibles”). The MMAI demonstration project began providing coordinated care to dual eligible enrollees in the Chicagoland area and Central Illinois beginning March 2014. The statewide expansion is the result of extensive planning initiated in 2019 by HFS in collaboration with CMS, health plans and community stakeholders. The MMAI integrated delivery system and payment model aims to improve the quality, coordination and cost-effectiveness of care for dual eligibles.

Aetna is the only health plan approved to operate the MMAI program across all Illinois counties.

G7 LEADERS UNITE AROUND AMBITIOUS GLOBAL CONSERVATION AGENDA Leaders of seven of the 10 largest economies in the world recently united in an ambitious agenda for the conservation of the planet, recognizing the critical role of nature in rebuilding the global economy in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a joint statement, the heads of state from the G7 nations agreed to conserve or protect at least 30% each of the land and ocean on earth by 2030 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. The communique also included support for conserving the biologically rich waters of the Antarctic Southern Ocean, tackling marine plastic pollution, addressing unsustainable and illegal activities negatively impacting nature, and mobilizing sustained financing to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss. The G7 finance ministers pledged to approach these measures with a commitment to an “inclusive global recovery that builds back better and greener.”

A new tool for Alzheimer’s and Dementia has been developed in partnership with UsAgainstAlzheimer’s. The BrainGuide provides resources to help combat the disease by identifying memory problems before people are diagnosed.

The BrainGuide is a simple, easy to use, highly accessible platform, available in English and Spanish. It includes information on diagnosis, treatment and prevention. There is also a section with resources people can use for people who care for people with cognitive impairment or dementia.

Dr. Philip Gorelick said the BrainGuide is important because there are people who might be experiencing cognitive changes or cognitive decline, especially in the older community.

Gorelick said in Illinois, there are close to 250,000 people, aged 65 or older, who have Alzheimer’s Disease, and 10 percent of people, aged 40 or older, have some subjective symptom of a thinking problem.

“This is a common problem, people are concerned about it, and they want to get some answers about what they should do and the BrainGuide is a great source to go to for free information to find out what are the signs and symptoms and what might you do,” he said.

Gorelick said it was a multidisciplinary feat to put the guide together.

Clinicians, as well as computer programming and artificial intelligence profes-

sionals, pooled their talents together to create this platform with the resources.

He said it took time and was thoroughly tested in different communities, including communities of color.

“I think it has been put together in a way that you can get information that is digestible and usable, and easy to access,” he said.

Another feature of the BrainGuide is the assessment test. There are eight questions that can be used by a potential patient, who wants to learn more about how their memory or other cognitive functions are doing, or it can be used on behalf of a patient, by a loved one or caregiver, who can answer the questions to find out the patient’s spectrum of cognitive impairment.

“Overall, I think we have a very nice tool here, one that will help our community and guide them to the next steps.

One of the reasons why it is important to find out about this problem early on is because there are some things we can do,” he said, adding the BrainGuide cannot give a diagnosis but will give an idea of where a person is with their memory so they can launch their healthcare journey, if needed.

Gorelick said the questions for the assessment test are part of the Alzheimer Disease 8. He added, the questions have been well-developed and well-validated and work with different members from different racial and ethnic groups.

Gorelick said the BrainGuide is important for the African American community because it has a disproportionate

burden of dementia. He said African Americans are two to three times more likely to have cognitive impairment.

In the Latino community, he said, it is one and a half times higher. He said one of the things learned over time is that cardiovascular risk factors correlate to cognitive impairment.

“We know that the African American community has been disproportionately burdened by cardiovascular risk. The proportion of people with high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and some other cardiovascular risk factors is higher,” he said.

“What we’ve been learning over the last couple of decades is that these factors may also put one at risk for not only strokes or heart attacks but also for Alzheimer’s Disease. The good news is these factors, the cardiovascular risk factors I’ve mentioned, are reversible or treatable,” Gorelick added.

Research shows that these factors can be treated and can slow down the cognitive impairment process that occurs over time, Gorelick continued. He said, using the BrainGuide can help with getting early treatment to prevent or slow down the cognitive decline, adding the BrainGuide questions are confidential and shared only with those who have access to the system.

There have been 100,000 visitors to the website, Gorelick continued, and half of them have taken the assessment test, he said.

Coalition behind the Empowering Communities for Public Safety ordinance blasts Lightfoot’s opposition to democracy and continued obstruction of police reform

SBA Announces Funding Competition to Organizations Providing Federal Procurement Training to Veteran Entrepreneurs Washington – The U.S. Small Business Administration recently announced that non-profit organizations and private sector firms are now eligible to compete for funding of up to $500,000 to deliver federal procurement training to veteran and service-disabled veteran entrepreneurs. The application period runs through July 12, 2021.

Up to two awardees will use the $500,000 in total funding to participate in the Veteran Federal Procurement Entrepreneurship Training Program (SB-OVVT-21-001) with grants from SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development. Awards will be made

for a base project period of 12 months, with three option periods of 12 months each. These funds will be used to cover the costs of educating veterans and service-disabled veterans who intend to pursue, or are already engaged in, federal procurement.

“With the U.S. Government being the single largest purchaser of goods and services in the world, there is a tremendous opportunity for our veteran small business community to tap into government contracting,” said Larry Stubblefield, associate administrator for the SBA’s Office of Veterans Business Development. “Through our Veteran

Federal Procurement Entrepreneurship Training Program, we will continue to provide grants that train and empower veterans and service-disabled veterans as they enter and expand in the federal marketplace.”

According to a press release by the Chicao Alliance Against racist and Political Repression, On Friday June 18, as she has done throughout her term, Mayor Lightfoot once again obstructed the democratic process of reforming Chicago’s troubled police department, instructing her allies in the Public Safety Committee to refuse to even consider a revised version of the Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) ordinance. Last Friday was supposed to be a capstone moment in Chicago’s years-long search for a solution to the endemic racism that haunts its police department, a search that culminated in the creation of the ECPS ordinance, around which hundreds of community organizations as well as dozens of labor unions, houses of worship, and all four caucuses in City Council have rallied.

Rather than meeting the weight of this historic moment and engaging in an open and democratic debate about a bill that, at its heart, is about democracy and its extension to police accountability, the Mayor’s allies engaged in a shameful display of procedural manipulation in order to thwart the democratic process and prevent the ECPS bill from even being debated in committee.

“If it wasn’t clear enough that Mayor Lightfoot is against democratic police accountability for Chicago, her actions on Friday showed she is even willing to subvert our democratic process in order to make sure our rights to true police accountability don’t threaten her power,” said Jazmine Salas, co-chair of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Repression. “Lightfoot has shown, once again, that she is the single greatest obstacle to police reform in Chicago.”

The Mayor’s office has claimed it is close to reaching an agreement with the ECPS coalition on an ordinance. This is a lie. The ECPS coalition has met exactly once with members of the Mayor’s office – enough to make it clear to the coalition that Lightfoot does not believe communities have any role to play in the process of community oversight.

“Our previous talks with the Mayor broke down because of Lightfoot’s disregard for communities and their need to have a say in their own safety,” said Desmon Yancy, Director of Community Organizing at the Inner-City Muslim Action Network. “As a coalition, we have no doubt that Lightfoot is totally unwilling to lead this city in the direction it is demanding to go – a future in which our communities are in charge of public safety. The city of Chicago has come together around that vision and this ordinance and we won’t stop fighting as a coalition for our right to democratic police accountability,” he added.

Moving forward, the coalition has decided to split ECPS into two ordinances. One will create the Local District Councils and the Community Commission envisioned by the original bill to oversee police department policy and investigations of police misconduct through COPA. The other will place a referendum on the ballot to ask Chicagoans whether the Community Commission should be directly elected and include expanded powers.

“The Black Caucus, Latino Caucus, Progressive Caucus, and Democratic Socialist Caucus all voted to endorse an ordinance that includes a referendum to empower Chicagoans to make a democratic choice about the Commission and its powers,” said Alderperson Carlos Ramirez-Rosa of the 35th Ward, Chairperson of the Democratic Socialist Caucus. He added, “In the face of a committee that is unwilling to even consider the change Chicago needs, we split the referendum from the original ordinance to ensure we uphold the rights of Chicagoans to decide on their public safety in a fair and democratic manner. We will be presenting the referendum in a standalone ordinance soon.”

Alderman Roderick Sawyer of the 6th Ward, a lead sponsor of ECPS and a member of the Black Caucus, agreed. “Last Friday was a setback for the city of Chicago, but our coalition will go forward to ensure that our city’s Black and brown communities have police accountability and public safety that empowers them to become the solution to ending police misconduct.”

Redfin Reports Pending Sales Continue to Slow--Still Up 29% from 2020 The breakneck pace of the housing market is beginning to slow heading into June, according to a new report from Redfin (redfin.com), the technology-powered real estate brokerage.

Leading indicators of activity are now mostly cooling off instead of continuing to heat up.

Adjusted for seasonality, home purchase applications have been falling since late March and are now 7% below their average levels in January and February 2020, despite low mortgage rates and easing access to credit.

The cooling market is also reflected in a four-week decline in pending sales and a drop in Redfin’s demand index, which is down 12% from its late-March peak. Taken as a whole, the data paints a picture not of a bursting bubble, but a clear change from the overheated spring market.

“Homebuyers may have found a better way to spend Memorial Day weekend than touring homes, but

most have not exited the market entirely,” said Redfin Lead Economist Taylor Marr. “Buyers have faced a tough market this year and fewer feel it is a good time to buy as the allure of low rates has waned, so some are choosing to wait it out for now. With demand stabilizing, the housing market should become more balanced, allowing homebuyers to have a less stressful and challenging time finding and competing for a home.”

“While the market has not come to a full stop, we are seeing signs of yielding,” said Westchester County, NY Redfin real estate agent Candice Smith. “Buyers are winning bidding wars with offers that are $60,000 or less over asking prices; just a month ago in similar situations they had to go $100,000 or more over asking.

Bidding wars are still the norm, but

the number of competing offers have been cut in half from around 17 to about eight. Homebuyers still need to be strategically creative when submitting their highest and best offer, which involves methods like offering to cover an appraisal gap upfront, dropping the appraisal or mortgage contingency altogether or adding escalation clauses.”

Key housing market takeaways for 400+ U.S. metro areas: Unless otherwise noted, this data covers the four-week period ending June 6. Redfin’s housing market data goes back through 2012.

Data on homes listed and/or sold during the period: The median home-sale price increased 24% year over year to $358,749, a record high.

Asking prices of newly listed homes hit a new all-time high of $364,725, up 14% from the same time a year ago.

Pending home sales were up 29% year over year. Seasonally adjusted

pending sales are down 9.7% from their peak four weeks ago. The sudden slowdown in pending sales is likely due to more people opting to pause their home search and take advantage of the holiday weekend.

New listings of homes for sale were up 9% from a year earlier.

Active listings (the number of homes listed for sale at any point during the period) fell 37% from 2020, and have been relatively flat since late February.

56% of homes that went under contract had an accepted offer within the first two weeks on the market, well above the 43% rate during the same period a year ago.

Homes that sold were on the market for a median of 16 days, a new all-time low and down from 38 days a year earlier.

A record 53% of homes sold above list price, up from 25% a year earlier.

The average sale-to-list price ratio, which measures how close homes are selling to their asking prices, increased to 102.1%—3.7 percentage points higher than a year earlier and an all-time high.

Other leading indicators of homebuying activity: Mortgage purchase applications increased 0.3% week over week (seasonally adjusted) during the week ending June 4. For the week ending June 10, 30-year mortgage rates decreased to 2.96%.

35% of consumers said it is a good time to buy a home in May, according to Fannie Mae’s homebuying sentiment index, down from 47% in April and 52% in May 2020.

Home tours as of June 6 were 26% above their level at the beginning of the year, compared to 40% at the same period in 2020, according to home tour technology company ShowingTime.

Quincy Jones’ 1981 Masterpiece ‘The Dude’ Celebrated With 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl In 1981, Quincy Jones released The Dude, a monumental pop-soul album created with a stellar cast of vocalists, studio musicians, and songwriters.

“One day, Henry Mancini and I were at an art gallery on Wilshire Blvd., and I saw a sculpture that just called out to me. It said, “Hey man,

take me home. I want to be an album, I want to be a tune.” I didn’t question it and bought the statue right then and there, because it had an attitude like I’d never seen before. It might sound crazy, but that’s what inspired the name of my 1981 album, The Dude, and you can see the silhouette of the sculpture on the album cover! I also found out that the statue actually came from a farm in South Africa.

The farm wasn’t making any profits, so the owner had a sculpting teacher named Fanizani Akuda (a member of the sculptural movement called Shona Sculpture) come and teach his workers how to sculpt, so that they could make a living, and The Dude is one of the sculptures that Fanizani made at the farm! I’ve had The Dude ever since!!

Cars.com Reports 10% of Recent Buyers Traveled Across State Lines to Purchase a Car According to recent research from leading digital automotive marketplace and solutions provider Cars.comTM(NYSE: CARS), nearly 10% of recent car buyers drove out of state to purchase their desired vehicle, with more than half (52%) of those traveling 25 miles, nearly 20% traveling 50 miles and 13% of buyers traveling more than 250 miles to a dealership due to ongoing newand used-car inventory shortages.

“With the current auto inventory challenges, recent car buyers are going to great lengths to find the car they want,” said Kelsey Mays, Cars.com assistant managing editor, news. “I don’t anticipate this trend slowing down, either. Of consumers currently in the market and shopping for a car, 65% said they would consider purchasing in another state.”

Additional insights from Cars.com’s recent national consumer survey include: l Buying and selling go hand in hand. Good news for used-car shoppers and dealers: Over half (53%) of those currently in the market to buy a car also plan to trade in their current vehicles to local dealerships, which are in need of more cars and, as a result, most are willing to pay a premium for new inventory. l Brand loyal. Shoppers are traveling the farthest distance for Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota car brands, with 57%

of shoppers who purchased out of state buying a new car, while 43% drove the extra miles for a used car. l Large cities, larger selection.

Shoppers expanding their search radius should include larger cities because they have more inventory than their rural counterparts. The top markets with the most inventory listed on Cars.com include New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas-Fort Worth.3 l Delivered to your home. With tighter inventory, at-home delivery of vehicles and trading in vehicles from the driveway is growing in popularity.

Jones has won an Emmy Award for his score of the opening episode of the landmark TV miniseries, Roots; seven Oscar nominations; the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; 28 Grammy Awards; a N.A.R.A.S.’ prestigious Trustees’ Award; and The Grammy Living Legend Award. He is the all-time most nominated Grammy artist with a total of 80 nominations.

In 2001, Jones was named a

Kennedy Center Honoree for his contributions to the cultural fabric of the United States of America, and was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master (the nation’s highest jazz honor). In 2010, Jones was bestowed the National Medal of Arts, America’s highest artistic honor, and most recently in 2016, Jones received a Tony Award for the category of “Best Revival of a Musical,” for the Broadway production of The Color Purple. The award completed the rare EGOT set for Jones: an exclusive subset of artists who have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. There are only 21 EGOT recipients in history.
