Black Healthcare Professionals Empower Next Generation MOULTRIE, Ga., PRNewswire -- Inspired by the iconic poem of Maya Angelou, “And Still I Rise,” PCOM South Georgia’s Sistahs in Medicine and PCOM’s Office of Diversity and Community Relations hosted a panel of Black women experts in health care to share their stories of strength, hope and perseverance.

The speakers included Stacie Fairley, PhD, PCOM South Georgia assistant professor of microbiology and immunology, Jessica Brumfield Mitchum, DO, family medicine physician and Karla Booker, MD, urgent care physician.

During her post-doctoral education, Dr. Fairley said that she was ready to give up. Like many students, the stress of academia became too much. Her advice to PCOM students who may be feeling similar was this: “In the midst of your struggles, don’t be robbed of your hope and your passion.”

How parents can help kids embrace math for future career success (BPT) - What do construction of the St. Louis Arch, overseeing the grocery service counter and the management of big data have in common? The answer is simple: math. Without the level of knowledge that math provides, the Gateway Arch might not have been completed, the grocer would not be able to manage its daily operations and every business that relies on data would grind to a halt.

Math is everywhere. But just saying the word “math” is likely to produce groans from both adults and children. Math often gets a bad reputation for being complicated to learn, uninteresting or a skill most people won’t need in their lives. For many young learners, math starts out fun. But along the way, concepts become more abstract and math anxiety sets in. Left unchecked, this can harm long-term learning and even impact kids’ future careers in a growing number of STEM fields. But experts say parents can help children develop a positive math mindset and embrace math as a core lifelong skill.

Why math is critical for future job success As demand for STEM jobs grows, parents continue to recognize the key role math plays in their children’s career paths. According to the 2020 edition of the Future of Jobs report by the World Economic Forum, roles such as data analysts and scientists, AI specialists, engineers, software and application developers are set to experience a notable increase in demand.

4 ways to protect yourself from phone scams (BPT) - Have you received a call from a number you think you should know or recognize? Phone scams are only successful if a potential target answers the call so the scammer can initiate a conversation. Using advanced technology, scammers modify how phone numbers appear on your caller ID to trick you into answering.

According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), “neighbor spoofing” is a popular scam strategy that makes it seem like you’re receiving a call from a local number. Seeing the area code, you may think it could be from a friend, neighbor or local business, prompting you to answer in case it’s important or an emergency from a known source.

Scammers have gotten more aggressive during the pandemic.

According to a T-Mobile 2021 year-end Scam and Robocall Report, scam attempts have increased 116% since 2020. Every week, on average, there are 425 million scam calls attempted.

While everyone can be susceptible to phone scams, Latinos and other people of color have become one of the largest targets for internet, phone and text scams. According to a recent survey

by AARP, 40% of Latino and Black adults have been targeted by online scams and fraud, and 1 in 5 have lost money to fraudsters.

If you, or someone you know, are receiving calls from unknown numbers, or even ones that may seem familiar, here are four ways you can protect yourself from potential scam calls.

1. Don’t answer unless you recognize the caller The easiest way to protect yourself from scammers is to simply not answer or respond. Whether it’s a call or text, let it go to voicemail or just ignore, even if it’s a call from a local number you think you should recognize. However, the ultimate solution is out there and it’s simply by adding Caller ID which is a free service with T-Mobile.

If it’s really important, maybe a call from your bank, a family friend or work, they’ll be more likely to leave a message with a call-back number. Confirm the call-back number on a company’s website before calling back.

2. Never confirm or share information Scammers are after your personal information, so if you do pick up a call or read a text from an unfamiliar number, do not confirm or share any sensitive, personal information over the phone. Even something as simple as confirming your name can leave you vulnerable to scammers.

3. Add your phone to the Do Not Call list The National Do Not Call Registry is a database maintained by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that stops unwanted calls. You can register your cellphone number on the registry’s website. While the Do Not Call Registry doesn’t stop all calls from real companies, it does let telemarketers know that your number is off-limits.

While adding your phone number to the registry won’t block scams, it does make them easier to spot. If you receive phone calls and texts from unknown numbers after adding your number to the Do Not Call list, you’ll know that they’re likely scams.

4. Use scam call-protection services There are several apps and services that can help cut down the number of unwanted calls and texts you receive. Several phone carriers now offer call-blocking services to their customers to help protect them from scams. For example, in 2020, T-Mobile launched Scam Shield, the first service by a major wireless provider that protects every customer against scammers without needing a special device, app or plan, and it’s free for T-Mobile and Metro

by T-Mobile customers.

The company’s 2021 year-end report found that the service blocked over 21 billion scam calls last year. That’s about 700 calls identified or blocked as Scam Likely every second, reducing the number of scam attempts by 116% in 2021. The carrier has continued to improve the service, adding new features like improved scam reporting, eSim app support and network tools to identify and block scams.

“Scammers are relentless, but so are we,” said Jorge Martel, vice president and general manager, T-Mobile Puerto Rico Region.

“With Latinos and other communities of color more susceptible to scam calls and online fraud, we are working to make a scammer’s job as hard as possible.”

releases of Requiem for the Enslaved Decca is proud to announce the signing of US composer Carlos Simon and the release of his new album Requiem for the Enslaved. The title work sees Simon infuse the traditional Catholic requiem with music from African American spirituals to create a haunting piece for chamber ensemble and spoken word.

The album’s central piece, Requiem for the Enslaved, with text by Marco Pavé, was commissioned by Georgetown University, where Simon is currently Assistant Professor of Composition, following a decision by its student body in 2020. A majority voted to establish a reparations fund to be paid to descendants of 272 enslaved people who were sold for $115,000 by the Maryland Jesuits, the founders of Georgetown, in 1838 to rescue the university from bankruptcy. This work honours the passing of those people purchased and sold by the founders. Upon receiving the commission, Simon visited the Louisiana cotton plantation that purchased the enslaved people and delved through the Georgetown archives for historical research as he began work on the piece. The album’s cover is inspired by this location.

Carlos Simon says of the work, “I’m so grateful to be joining the Decca family and to be finally releasing this project. It is my hope that I not only honour the men, women and children sold into slavery, but also recognize that systemic racism is still ever present in our society.”

Alongside the full 50-minute performance of Requiem for the Enslaved, the album features three reflective bonus tracks reworking musical material from the piece. Simon, an esteemed pianist, performs himself, along with trumpeter MK Zulu.

Simon, the son of a New Orleans preacher, draws on both his gospel music heritage and his training in Western composi-

tion. Requiem for the Enslaved adapts the ten-movement requiem form, featuring spoken word by spoken word and hip-hop artist Marco Pavé, which draws from the West African griot and jali legacy of storytelling. Echoes of Gregorian chant blend into Simon’s distinctive neoromantic compositional voice, performed by the pioneering Boston-based ensemble Hub New Music (violin, flute, cello and clarinet) and trumpeter MK Zulu. Overlapping, multi-cultural meaning is packed into the work.
