2019 HBCU COMPETITIVENESS SCHOLARS ANNOUNCED The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Initiative) recently announced the names of 44 students from 34 historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) selected as 2019 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars – the Initiative’s highest student recognition.

Competitiveness Scholars are recognized for the 2019-2020 academic school year. Throughout this period, the Initiative will facilitate engagement activities, as well as provide information and resources that scholars can take advantage of or disseminate to fellow students. Scholars are encouraged to fully take advantage of the opportunities provided, engage with one another and showcase their individual and collective talents across the HBCU spectrum.

Competitiveness Scholars will receive their recognition at the HBCU week conference during the Initiative’s Excellence in Innovation and Competitiveness Awards luncheon ceremony on Sept. 9.

BATS LEAD IN U.S. RABIES RISK Bats are responsible for roughly 7 in 10 rabies deaths among people who are infected with the rabies virus in the United States, possibly because people may not know of the risk bats pose, according to the Vital Signs report released recently by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The large percentage of deaths tied to bats is particularly striking since bats account for just a third of the 5,000 rabid animals reported each year in the U.S. Rabid dogs that people encounter while traveling overseas are the second-leading cause of rabies cases in Americans.

The U.S. averages 1-3 human cases of rabies a year now, down from 30-50 cases per year in the 1940s. This decrease is largely due to routine pet vaccination and availability of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which combines rabies vaccine and rabies immune globulin to prevent infection after exposure to the virus. Each year, about 55,000 people in the U.S. seek PEP after a potential rabies exposure. Rabies is nearly always fatal if people don’t get rabies PEP before symptoms start.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR COMPLIANCE EVALUATION RESULTS IN FEDERAL CONTRACTOR PAYING $50,000 IN BACK WAGES After a routine compliance evaluation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), Consolidated Diesel Inc. – a federal contractor and subsidiary of Cummins Inc. – has agreed to pay $50,000 in back wages for alleged pay discrimination against African-American managers at the diesel engine manufacturing facility in Whitakers, North Carolina.

OFCCP alleged that – since at least 2013 – the company paid 11 African-American managers less than white managers in similar roles.

“Federal contractors and subcontractors must comply with all federal anti-discrimination laws,” said OFCCP Southeast Regional Director Samuel Maiden. Although the company did not admit liability, it will take steps to ensure its pay practices meet the legal requirements.

On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, traveled to Galveston, Texas to share the news that the American Civil War had ended and all of the nation’s slaves were declared free. Since then, Juneteenth has been celebrated every year on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, according to the History of Juneteenth website.

Like many other communities in and around Chicago, the Village of Robbins in the south suburbs recently hosted their own annual Juneteenth Celebration at the Robbins Community Center. The free event featured food, games, water slides, a bouncy house, and a movie in the park.

“As a predominately black town, it’s important for our youth in Robbins to understand and know the history of when slavery ended and why it ended that way in

that town in Texas in 1865. It’s important for our youth to get the history and understand these things,” said Tyrone Ward, Mayor of Robbins.

During the celebration, people were invited to come to the Robbins Community Center for a day of fun while simultaneously learning about the history of Juneteenth. During the event, Mayor Ward discussed how slavery ended in America and shared with attendees that many slaves didn’t know that they had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation until two years after the fact when General Granger arrived in Texas.

“We have the activities and get them out and let them play and then once we get their attention we talk to them for a little bit about the history. We don’t want to overwhelm them but we want to make sure that they are getting it because it’s more important to understand the history as much as it is to get them all together to have fun. We see this as a learning oppor-

tunity and that’s always important to me,” said Ward.

This is the second year that the Village of Robbins has hosted their Juneteenth celebration and this year attendees were able to cap the night off with a free showing of Black Panther in the park.

Ward said that it’s important to make sure that people understand this important piece of African American history and he is proud to be able to host an annual Juneteenth celebration in the Village of Robbins.

“We found that initially last year, a lot of people were not aware of this piece of history. One, because it’s something we don’t teach in school and number two is that there are just a few towns and certain parts of Chicago that celebrate this,” said Ward.

“They are always really surprised that this happened and that the slaves were free and had no clue. Once they hear the story and the history, it makes all the sense in the world and every year the event grows.”

Whose Lives Matter? Our Lives Matter

Twenty years ago, I was a director of youth programs for a subsidiary organization of the Chicago Housing Authority. I ran after-school, GED and job training programs for Black youth living in the city’s public housing.

In the three years that I ran these programs, there were four times when I supported young poor, Black women in their choice to get abortions. Two of those pregnancies were the results of rape - one was by a family member. Under the oppressive laws now being pushed through state legislatures, these procedures may become illegal.

I helped these young women because what was on the line for all of them was their dignity: they would lose or delay their ability to finish school. Two of these young women would be the first members of their families to go to college. I cared too much about their young lives, I could not allow that to happen.

These courageous young women had created bright futures for themselves and their families, overcoming extreme challenges of poverty, violence and exploitation. They all deserved the chance to succeed. Their communities deserved the pride that would come with knowing new possibilities existed for their children and the next generation.

The red-state legislators who now seek to roll back reproductive rights say they are “pro-life.” But I don’t ever hear them asking Black women about their lives.

If they did, they would learn a thing or two. And they’d hear many of us express personal conflicts about abortion.

I share these misgivings. But I also felt misgivings when, at 17, I was taught by the United States Army how to fire a M16 semi-automatic rifle, a M60 automatic rifle, an AT4 rocket launcher, how to throw grenades and how to construct and detonate Claymore mines.

At 17, I was too young to vote, but our government had no problem teaching me how to kill.

So many young people, especially poor youth, and Black, brown and queer youth, are trained, even encouraged, to take lives in the name of the United States of America. I can now understand that what I was being asked to do is prepare myself to protect the interests of the wealthy - by killing, and by being ready to sacrifice my own life.

Right-wing legislators crow about protecting the “right to life.” But the color and gender of that life affects its value in our society. What value do we place on a young Black woman’s future, or any girl or woman’s future? On her dignity, her potential, her self-confidence, and her reputation in her community? Lawmakers want to reach into our lives and bodies and choose for us.

That’s why so many of us are rattled by this wave of anti-abortion legislation. We are horrified that the root of this push to control our lives and bodies is to protect economic and political power for the few, who already have far more than they need.

Legislators have no authority over women’s bodies. Most of us know that; many of us embody that. Now, as voters and activists, we are in a position where we can do something about it. We have to do something about it.

Whether or not you agree with abortion, no other person should have the right to determine what happens to your body or even to the life inside of your body against your will or agency.

New Road Trip Report Shows Rising Gas Prices, Work Schedules Cramp Car Travel

Nearly half of American drivers surveyed say that rising gas prices are stopping them from heading out on a road trip this summer, according to results of a motorist study released by CarInsurance.com, a one-stop destination for expert advice on car insurance.

Soon, the school year will be in the rear-view mirror, and families across the nation will hit the road for a good old-fashioned summer road trip.

To kick off the season, CarInsurance.com surveyed 1,000 drivers to find out how they feel when behind the wheel, what their family road trip experiences are like, what they do to cope with traffic and what types of mishaps they’ve had due to poor road conditions.

CarInsurance.com found that 44 percent of people said that gas prices

are preventing them from taking the family on a road trip.

That’s an increase from 36 percent last year.

Another reason drivers may skip a summer road trip is that they can’t take time off from work.

Nearly one-third of respondents pointed to not being able to take off time, according to a news release.

The research also revealed that the vast majority of people enjoy family road trips, despite some respondents mentioning that a family member had a meltdown before the adventure was underway.

More than 90 percent say they’ve taken a family road trip over the past five years.

Only 17 percent of respondents claim to prefer air travel over road trips.

Most of those who favor the road say those trips are just more enjoyable than heading to an airport. While on

the road, 44 percent of drivers surveyed say they feel contentment when driving. A mere 10 percent feel either stressed or “rage-y.”

However, one noted headache associated with road trips is traffic.

Approximately 11 percent called people who they weren’t particularly close to because they were bored.

The survey found that poor road conditions also caused 20 percent of drivers to have a one-car accident, 19 percent report getting into an accident with another car.

Just one accident can raise your yearly car insurance rate by 32 percent, or $450 a year, on average, according to CarInsurance.com’s rate data analysis.

Whether you’ve experienced an accident or not, you can save on car insurance by comparing rates, according to Penny Gusner, CarInsurance.com consumer analyst.

“You can always save money by comparison shopping, as pricing varies significantly among insurers for the same coverage,” Gusner said.

Party Boutique And Spa For Young Girls Opens In The South Suburbs

Totally Posh is a party boutique that recently celebrated its grand opening in the Village of Matteson.

The new business is located on 3705 216th St. and offers a new destination for young girls to host their birthday parties, celebrations, and have spa days.

Totally Posh works to provide girls with a unique party experience and to provide them with a chance to be pampered. Totally Posh hopes to be able to provide fun and engaging party experiences that allow girls to feel special while they celebrate and make memories with friends and family.

“Little girls can expect Totally Posh to be an upscale party venue where they can have their birthday, receive day spa services, or shop in our boutique that is designed specifically for girls,” said Shawnie Washington, owner of Totally Posh.

Aside from being a great place for your ladies to celebrate with their families, the creation of Totally Posh was a family effort in itself.

The Village of Matteson recently celebrated the grand opening of Totally Posh, a party venue and day spa designed specifically for young girls.

“My inspiration for this was my daughter, she is seven years old and she loves everything glam. She was the inspiration behind the design, the decor, and the party packages,” said Washington. “My husband was very instrumental in doing the construction and design and my dad was also very instrumental in making the runway stage and the glam pedicure stations and then my mom was an investor so I really had a true team.”

birthday parties and day spa services and the Totally Posh team also hosts team building workshops and a Summer Posh Glam Camp, according to the Totally Posh website.

“One of our unique features is our Celebration Action Station. We have a lipgloss station where girls can create their own lipgloss. We have a sugar scrub sundae station where girls can create their own sugar scrub. And we also have several stations for manicures, pedicures, facials, and makeup,”

said Washington.

Every detail of the party boutique has been designed with young women in mind and the services are suitable for young kids all the way to teenagers.

“The age range that we work with are about four to 16. Girls that are four to 15 years old can book a spa party or day spa services and girls that are 16 can rent the venue for a sweet 16, a prom sendoff, or a graduation party,” said Washington.

This is just one of the many recent new businesses to pop up in the Village of Matteson and the Mayor, Sheila Chalmers-Currin, said that she is looking forward to seeing the business grow.

Former Village of Posen President Guilty of Embezzlement The former president of the village of Posen pleaded guilty in federal court recently to charges he embezzled money from the south suburb and spent it at casinos.

Donald W. SChupek, 79, of Posen, pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement. The conviction carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, plus mandatory restitution.

U.S. District Judge Robert W. Gettleman set sentencing for Sept. 12, 2019, at 10:30 a.m.

The guilty plea was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr., United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois; and Jeffrey S. Sallet, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago office of the FBI. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Terry Kinney.

According to his plea agreement, Schupek, while serving as Posen president, directed the village bookkeeper to issue checks on the village’s checking account made payable to Schupek. From June 2014 to August 2016, Schupek directed the issuance of nine checks, totaling $27,000, the plea agreement states. At the time, Schupek did not inform the village treasurer nor the village board that he had issued these checks to himself.

Schupek admitted in the plea agreement that he converted the funds to his own use, including gambling expenses at two casinos in Joliet.

Hinton Selected as BUFI’s Chairman of the Board of Directors

As the city of Chicago has welcomed its new mayor, the Black United Fund of Illinois welcomes its new chairman of the Board of Directors, Gregory Hinton.

Considered one of the foremost leading authorities on diversity/ inclusion practices, Hinton made history when he was appointed as the first chief diversity officer for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2011. Prior to joining the DNC, Hinton was the senior director/ chief diversity strategist at U.S. Cellular Corporation.

With 35 years of global experience working in corporate environments, such as Abbott, Pepsi, Amtrak, Advocate Health Systems, and R.R. Donnelley, Hinton is currently the CEO of the GREGORY GROUP consulting firm. In this capacity, he is called upon to validate, reinforce and highlight major related practices of organizations looking for external voices to echo the need for personal responsibility.

As BUFI’s board chairman, Hinton is replacing an icon: Professor Robert Starks. “Bob has been the Board Chair since BUFI’s inception. It’s hard to fill the shoes of such a community giant,” stated Hinton.

In filling those shoes, Hinton is tasked with providing leadership in the area of fundraising and increasing

BUFI’s number of program offerings, along with identifying additional Board members to help serve the organization.

“I’m glad to work with our newlyappointed Executive Director Carolyn Day in ensuring that BUFI runs effectively and efficiently. Together, we have plenty of ideas and plans to keep BUFI moving in the direction that our late, esteemed founder and leader, Henry English, would expect of us,” shared Hinton.

In 1986, English—with a diverse group of businessmen, educators and community leaders— organized BUFI making it the 16th independent affiliate of the National Black United Fund.

The National Black United Fund was founded on the principles of self-help, mutual aid and volunteerism in order to create systematic mechanisms to rally resources for African-American communities.

By creating the necessary systematic mechanisms, Hinton believes that BUFI must meet the increasing needs of the community through programming and advocacy, and one of his responsibilities as board chair is to “serve as the face of BUFI, while expanding BUFI’s mission and vision to the broader community.”

SBA Appoints Two New Senior Executives The U.S. Small Business Administration recently announced the appointment of two new senior executives. George Koklanaris is serving as the Associate Administrator for the Office of Small Business Development Centers and Stefanie Baker Wehagen as the National Ombudsman for the Office of the National Ombudsman.

George Koklanaris oversees the SBA’s Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) across the United States and its territories. The SBDCs provide the nation’s small businesses with the support and resources necessary to help them succeed.

Koklanaris previously served at the SBA as a Special Assistant and the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Field Operations and Director of the Office of Strategic Alliances.

Stefanie Baker Wehagen is the National Ombudsman and Assistant

Administrator for Regulatory Enforcement Fairness. As the National Ombudsman, Wehagen is responsible for assisting small businesses when they experience excessive or unfair federal regulatory enforcement actions, such as repetitive audits or investigations, excessive fines, penalties, threats, retaliation or other unfair enforcement action by a federal agency. Santana’s Thrilling New Album ‘Africa Speaks’ Debuts At #3 On Billboard Top 200 Music legend Carlos Santana’s new album Africa Speaks, out now via Concord Records, has debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. Redbox, recently announced a partnership with DoorDash, the largest and fastest-growing on-demand destination for door-to-door delivery in more than 4,000 cities in the United States and Canada.

They will launch an upcoming Dinner & A Movie promotion in the U.S., offerings fans FREE movie nights and $0 delivery fees* on up to three orders delivered through DoorDash nationwide.

Both Redbox disc and On Demand streaming movie nights are included in the promotion meant to create meaningful movie and dining occasions that encourage connecting with family and friends this year.

Dinner & A Movie will be rolled out nationwide this summer, sparking togetherness over one of America’s favorite pastimes. During this promotional period, Redbox announced plans to partner with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to make Movie Night possible for families adopting from foster care.

FREE Movie Nights will be given to the Foundation to offer the same special experience to the children and families they serve. The Foundation’s mission is to dramatically increase the number of adoptions of children waiting in North America’s foster care systems with the vision that every child will have a permanent home and loving family.

Statistics support the need for shared movie nights.

A Redbox Omnibus survey found that two-thirds of Americans miss the days when movie nights were a planned activity with friends and family, according to a Redbox August 2018 Omnibus Survey. And 80 percent thinks movies are therapeutic, yet half are indulging in isolated binge-watching. Redbox launched Back to the Movies in August 2018 to reset the way we consume media in a vacuum and is now on a mission to create meaningful consumer dialogue around the power of Movie Nights in bringing people together.

(StatePoint) While we all get bored from time to time, it’s important to know that chronic boredom may be bad for health, as experts have found it can be associated with depression, anxiety and even bad habits like smoking and overeating.

July is Anti-Boredom Month, and the perfect opportunity to explore new hobbies and interests, while giving yourself the tools to combat boredom now and in the future.

Check out these eight ideas to try this month, and beyond.

• Test a new recipe: Think outside the culinary box. Look for a recipe from a style of cuisine you haven’t tried before. Or, attempt a cooking feat for the first time, such as making pasta from scratch.
