NEWS briefly EDUCATION GRAB-AND-GO MEAL DISTRIBUTION RESUMES WHILE DISTRICT PROVIDES RESOURCES FOR NAVIGATING DISCUSSIONS ABOUT RACE AND EQUITY Meal distribution has resumed at more than 300 school sites following a temporary one-day suspension of grab-and-go meal sites due to recent transportation and safety challenges that were anticipated for families and staff. During the one-day suspension, CPS delivered meals to families, as previously planned and scheduled. For the current list of active meal sites, please visit cps.edu/mealsites. At the board meeting in May, the district announced that it would be providing its current expanded grab-and-go meals structure throughout the summer.

Also, to help students, educators and parents navigate discussions around racial inequities that spurred action in Chicago and throughout the country, CPS has provided an instructional toolkit for families and staff. “We support and stand with Chicagoans who are forcefully, yet peacefully, advocating for the rights of black and brown people. We created a package of resources for families to navigate these difficult times and we hope this leads to critical conversations in households and virtual classrooms across Chicago,” CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson said in a news release.

Since the final day of in-person instruction, CPS principals and nutrition staff have ensured families are fed and supported. More than 13 million free meals have been provided to school staff and more than 125,000 computing devices were distributed to support remote learning.

IEMA REMINDS RESIDENTS WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local offices of emergency management are encouraging residents to stay aware of local forecasts and be prepared for severe weather. The National Weather Service says heat and humidity could fuel afternoon and evening thunderstorms, producing strong and dangerous winds. The forecast serves as a good reminder: when thunder roars, go indoors.

IEMA offers severe weather preparedness information on the Ready Illinois website (www.Ready.Illinois.gov), a one-stop resource for detailed information about what to do before, during and after disasters. To help Illinois residents prepare for severe weather season, IEMA and the NWS developed a Severe Weather Preparedness Guide that covers flooding, severe weather terms and tips for staying safe. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AWARDS NEARLY $400 MILLION FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT HIRING TO ADVANCE COMMUNITY POLICING The Department of Justice recently announced nearly $400 million in grant funding through the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) COPS Hiring Program (CHP). The Attorney General announced funding awards to 596 law enforcement agencies across the nation, which allows those agencies to hire 2,732 additional full-time law enforcement professionals. The awards announced are inclusive of the $51 million announced in May as part of Operation Relentless Pursuit.

The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and advance public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers. In addition to providing financial support for hiring, CHP provides funding to state, local, and tribal law enforcement to enhance local community policing strategies and tactics. Funding through this program had been on hold since the spring of 2018 due to a nationwide injunction that was lifted earlier this year. The COPS Office received nearly 1,100 applications requesting more than 4,000 law enforcement positions.

Protest Rally For George Floyd Unites the Southland to March For Justice and Love Continued from page 1

The recent death of George Floyd united more than 1,000 people living in the Southland including U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-2nd) and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx to participate in a peaceful rally in Matteson.

Floyd, an unarmed black man, died on March 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer allegedly held his knee on Floyd’s neck until he could not breathe for nearly nine minutes. Hennepin County State’s Attorney, Mike Freeman, has charged Derek Chauvin and three other former police officers with Floyd’s death.

Kelly, a Matteson resident and Foxx, who lives in Flossmoor, were among a host of elected officials, which included Gov. JB Pritzker, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, and Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin, who spoke at the rally before marching with protestors.

Foxx, who lived in the former Cabrini-Green public housing complex on the Near North Side as a little girl, told the crowd it breaks her heart every time the criminal justice system does not work fairly.

“I talk about the fact that I come from the ‘projects’ and that I have more in common with the people

who come through our [justice] system than many of the lawyers I work with,” explained Foxx. “And that’s not because we [blacks] are not as brilliant, bright or because we don’t have the opportunity to change our world, but because the system has oppressed us for so long.”

Longtime Matteson residents like Rosie O’Brien, 76, said the march was important because it showed the unity that exists in the south suburbs.

“I have lived in Matteson since 1972 and I have seen this predominately black suburb go through several transformations before it got to where it is today,” O’Brien said.

She added in Matteson, and in the surrounding villages, there are families who “stick together,” especially in times like these, where residents have been challenged by COVID-19 and most recently, by the “unjust” death “of yet another unarmed black man.”

The Unity Bridge in Matteson is where protestors ended their march after starting at Victory Apostolic Church, also in Matteson, which organized the rally. The Rev. Andrew Singleton Jr., pastor of the church, emceed the rally, which included a poetry reading and musical selections by local entertainers.

“God is good and is still in the business of delivering blessings to anyone who needs it, and a blessing is what we all can use these days,” Singleton told the crowd. “We want this march to be loud, but peaceful

and vibrant, but organized,” Singleton said. Most of all, he added, “we want this march to bring unity to the area and serve as a blessing to those who want their concerns,” heard about what is happening in the world today,” he said.

The rally was well attended by many youth including 19-year-old Anthony Orr, who marched with his 7-year-old brother.

“He needs to be here so I brought him with me so he can see what black people are fighting for and how to go about making change happen in your community,” said Orr. “I could be at a lot of places right now instead of here, but this march is important to me and my future. I could be the next black man killed senselessly by police like George Floyd, and if that should happen, I want people to march on my behalf and for change in America.”

Chalmers-Currin thanked elected officials and Matteson trustees for attending and credited the community’s support for the rising economic developments taking place in the village.

“It’s because of you that I am able to bring more housing and new businesses to the area,” contends Chalmers-Currin. “And it is because you, the community, that Matteson stands strong within the Southland and will never sit back and allow injustices to occur without having our voices heard loud and clear.”

Annual Deaths Due to Alcohol, Drugs or Suicide Exceeded 150,000 Newly released data show that 151,964 Americans died due to alcohol, drugs or suicide in 2018.

This national death rate for alcohol, drug and suicide deaths was only very slightly lower than what it had been in 2017 despite progress in reducing some types of opioid overdose, according to a new study

by Trust for America’s Health(TFAH) and Well Being Trust (WBT).

For the year, alcohol deaths were up 4 percent and suicide deaths were up 2 percent. The new data also show a continuing shift within the opioid crisis with reductions in deaths due to prescription opioid overdose but increases in deaths involving

synthetic opioids, including fentanyl.

Death rates for all opioids were down 2 percent, but the death rate for synthetic opioids was up 10 percent. Additionally, heroin involved overdose deaths were lower but deaths involving cocaine and other psychostimulants, such as methamphetamine, ecstasy, amphetamine and prescription stimulants, were higher.

While still disturbingly high, the 2018 data is the first time since 1999, when the current data collection began, that there has not been a sizable increase in the alcohol, drugs and suicide deaths per 100,000 rate. However, this stabilization in the deaths rate

was not uniform. Some places and population groups are experiencing stable or decreasing deaths rates while rates among other groups or in other places continue to rise.

American Indians, Asians, Blacks, Latinos and older adults all experienced increases in drug-induced deaths between 2017 and 2018.

Blacks and American Indians had the largest absolute increase. Blacks now have higher synthetic opioid overdose rates (10.7 per 100,000), cocaine overdose rates (8.8 per 100,000) and nearly the same overall drug-induced death rate (21.8 per 100,000) as Whites, after decades of having substan-

tially lower rates.

Population groups that experienced lower drug-induced death rates in 2018 included adults ages 18 – 54 and Whites.

“These data are a clarion call to action,” said John Auerbach, president and CEO of Trust for America’s Health. “We know what works to address deaths of despair but progress has been uneven and death rates continue to climb, with communities of color experiencing higher rates of increases in drug-induced and alcohol deaths. And there’s another immediate concern: the COVID-19 crisis has increased the health burdens and economic pressures on many communities of color.”

Black People Eats raises money for Black-owned restaurants

Jeremy Joyce began Black People Eats in 2017 with the goal of highlighting and connecting people to Black restaurants —not just in the city of Chicago—but across the country.

In early June, he decided to create the Black-Owned Restaurant Relief Fund, raising more than $50,000 just two days after he initially started the fundraiser. So far, more than $69,000 has been raised for the cause.

Joyce said he was prompted to start the fund after a conversation about doing more for Black-owned restaurants. He said it really resonated with him spiritually.

“I just realized Black restaurants need help and God has given me a voice and my voice is used for those whose voices cannot be heard,” he said.

Joyce said after posting videos of him eating food, a friend told him it was his calling. He started tagging the restaurants in photos, but wasn’t really getting recognition on social media. He said he met the young woman who created Rockford Eats and they talked.

“She showed me how to formalize it and her last words to me were, ‘you should create a platform just for food.’ ” Joyce said he was hesitant at first, but eventually decided to start the platform from scratch. He said the goal of Black People Eats was to help people locate where Black restaurants are and what to eat when you get to these restaurants.

He said he wanted to be the “go-to guy for Black restaurants” where he could use his camera to

tell people what he was tasting and experiencing. During his first time trying it, he wanted “raw” and “real reactions” that were unedited.

Joyce said the response from people about the site has been great. He said in the beginning, he had to prove his worth as a 25-year old asking to highlight restaurants.

He said he had two moments when he knew people were receptive to the content. One was when a

restaurant owner called and told him that people came into the restaurants after seeing Joyce’s Black People Eats. “That makes me grateful because our job, our mission is to connect communities to Black-owned food and beverage companies,” he said, adding “Our goal is to highlight Black restaurants [and] to bring them exposure. It doesn’t matter if this company never gives me the praise,

accolades or a pat on the back,” he said. “At the end of the day, if it’s helping Black restaurants, that’s the ‘why’ of our business,” he said.

Once Joyce and his team review the applications from the restaurants, on Juneteenth, Black People Eats will announce the recipients of the funds.

Springfield - Illinois restaurants and bars can serve cocktails to go after Gov. JB Pritzker signed an initiative designed by lawmakers to provide establishments with financial relief in the wake of COVID-19 challenges.

Those businesses are “some of the hardest hit” by the public health emergency, the governor said in a press release after signing the bill into law.

“This legislation will provide these businesses with a critical tool to bring in additional income until they can safely and fully reopen their doors once more,” he added.

Chicago Democratic Sen. Sara Feigenholtz sponsored the initiative in her chamber. She said Illinois is one of 34 other states to have such “a survival tool” on the books.

Alcoholic beverages are available for customers only in pick-up and delivery orders, and must be served in a sealed container with a tamper-proof lid, according to the law. Drivers delivering mixed drinks must store them in a trunk or other compartment inaccessible to them while operating the motor vehicle.

Those working for third-party delivery services, including DoorDash and GrubHub, cannot bring residents the cocktails to go.

The law, set to expire one year from Tuesday, additionally postpones late fees and liquor license fees for restaurants and bars. It also authorizes a license extension for any establishment that suffered business interruptions due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Cocktails to go is a small but important initiative designed to help our hospitality industry get back on its feet after COVID-19,” Democratic Rep. Michael Zalewski, from Riverside, said in a written statement.

House Bill 2682 was sent to the governor by the General Assembly on May 29 after passing both chambers on a bipartisan basis near-unanimously six days earlier.

It was introduced over a year ago as legislation creating three aviation-related government funds. The same day representatives and senators concluded their special session, Feigenholtz proposed an amendment gutting and replacing that original language with the bill that legalizes cocktails-to-go.

3 Expert Pay Negotiation Tips for Women StatePoint - As advocates continue to put gender equity under a microscope and some progress has been made, there’s still a long way to go. The income gap between men and women has yet to be closed, and while employers have a huge role to play in creating a level playing field, many women could advocate for themselves more effectively during salary negotiations.

A recent Randstad US survey found that 60 percent of women have never negotiated their pay. Additionally, roughly half of the women surveyed (51 percent) also said they’re more likely to leave a job because they’re underpaid, rather than ask their manager for a raise.

Asking for more money can be stressful, particularly for women. Research has shown that women have a tendency to both underestimate their value and avoid assertiveness (an essential skill for negotiating). These factors make negotiating more difficult, but no less important -- which is why you should be extra prepared.

Instead, use this time to ask your manager for feedback: What are you doing well? How would they like to see you improve? Show your manager that you want to do your job better, and then go make it happen.

Then, revisit that pay conversation a few months later.

Ultimately, the best thing you can do is advocate for yourself. For your employer, it’s all about the return on investment, and if you can make a solid case, most employers are willing to negotiate rather than lose you to one of their competitors.

Make a Commitment to More Family Meals Family Features - Spending moments together with loved ones carries obvious benefits like time to catch up and opportunities to bond, but sharing meals actually provides definitive value for families. With restricted social interactions and confinement at home due to COVID-19, many families are facing meal challenges that have shifted from juggling busy schedules to seeking new ways to mix up the traditional menu or using digital solutions to reconnect at a virtual table.

A study published in the “Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior” funded by the FMI Foundation shows that more frequent family meals are associated with better dietary and family functioning outcomes. The results build on years of previous research studies to punctuate

the creation of the Family Meals Movement, which encourages Americans to pledge to share one more family breakfast, lunch or dinner at home per week.

Consider these notable findings from the study: l Family meals improve fruit and vegetable consumption. Studies show a positive relationship between family meal frequency and fruit and vegetable intake when examined separately, but also when fruit and vegetable intake are combined. l Family meals improve family dynamics.

Nearly all the studies included in the systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated a positive relationship between family meal frequency and measures of family functioning.

Family functioning is defined as family connectedness, communication, expressiveness and problem-solving “There are thousands of individual studies that examine the impact of family meals on nutrition and family behavior, but this meta-analysis looks at the relationship between family meal frequency and family functioning outcomes,” said David Fikes, executive director of the FMI Foundation. “We can confirm that family meals are a valuable contributor of improved nutrition and family dynamics.”

3. On heavily floured surface, knead dough a few times and roll out to fit greased 10-inch tart pan.

4. Carefully spread dough into tart pan and bake 15-20 minutes, or until tart starts to turn golden brown. Remove from oven and cool.

5. Dust crust with cornstarch to help fruit stick to crust.

Arrange strawberries, kiwi, banana and blueberries on top of crust; sprinkle with sugar, if desired.

3. Place pizza crust on pan and evenly spread tomato sauce over crust. Sprinkle evenly with cheese. Top evenly with rotisserie chicken mixture and pineapple.
