CHICAGO —During National Small Business Week, Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced that the full $250 million in relief funds have been granted through the Back to Business (B2B) program. This concludes the program, providing nearly 6,500 grants to small businesses in over 475 cities and more than 90 counties across the state, with 96 percent of awards delivered to businesses in disproportionately impacted communities or in the hardest-hit industries. A list of Illinois B2B grantees can be found here.

This grant program utilized American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to help small businesses rehire staff, cover operating costs, afford additional customer safety precautions, and cover other expenses needed to recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants were awarded to applicants on a rolling basis with dollar amounts ranging in size from $5,000 to $150,000, based on a percentage of losses each business experienced during the pandemic.

The B2B grants were prioritized for businesses most in need of support due to the pandemic, including hard hit sectors such as hotels, restaurants, arts and cultural organizations, barbershops and salons, dry cleaners, and fitness centers.

The program included set-aside allocations for businesses in disproportionately impacted areas (DIAs); businesses that applied for but did not receive Business Interruption Grants in 2020, as well as specific hard-hit industries.

“Our students faced unprecedented challenges and they faced every one of them and more than met them,” said Dr. Blondean Y. Davis, CEO of Southland College Prep Charter High School and Superintendent of Matteson School District 162. “When our students succeed, we all succeed.”

Myles Sanders will attend University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Fla., to study aerospace engineering and plans to become a NASA engineer. Sanders said his education at Southland prepared him to handle a heavy workload in a short amount of time. Sanders received a merit-based scholarship to attend the University of Miami. The scholarship will enable him to study abroad without financial restrictions and allow him to pursue all options of his interest.

Olumide Adesioye and Maya Moore are co-valedictorians. Adesioye had a 4.88 grade point average and Moore had a 4.86 grade point average.

Adesioye is a Questbridge Scholar who received a full scholarship to Brown University, in Providence, RI, where she will study human and health sciences.

The lessons she learned at Southland Prep is how to handle multiple things at once. She remembers staying at school until 5 p.m. during her freshman year. She believes that experience prepared her for the stress of college.

“It also taught me how to uphold a good character through it all. Even when things got stressful, I had to keep a positive attitude and just keep pushing through it,” she said.

Initially, Adesioye wanted to be a nurse practitioner. She was matched with Brown and decided to expand her options within the medical field. The Questbridge Scholarship will enable her to focus on classes without the stress of figuring out her finances. It will allow her to focus on grades instead of money.

Adesioye acknowledges the Class of 2022 has been through a lot. From having 5 p.m. days as freshmen to learning through a screen sophomore year to SAT Test in junior year and now to get to see everyone in the senior year, accepted to college. She is incredibly proud of her classmates and their growth.

Moore will attend Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., where she plans to study environmental science or environmental engineering. She started taking an environmental science class during her senior year and it was a class she enjoyed learning about. She plans to focus on climate change and wants to find ways to solve the issues happening all around the world. Moore studied Japanese for three years and wants to study abroad in Japan. She has really enjoyed learning the language and about Japanese culture.

During her time at Southland Prep, she learned time management and balance. She had to prioritize things in order to keep her grades up.

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL– South Suburban College (SSC), with the assistance of Career Development Systems (CDS), hosted the 15th annual High School Video Competition on Thursday, April 28, 2022, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center. The competition showcases talent from high schools as well as provides tours of the college’s facilities, including the television studio, audio studio and new multimedia lab, built Spring 2022.

Graphic Design & Visual Communications coordinator, professor Pamela Planera, and other SSC staff welcomed high school students and their families to the event. “This year’s competition meant the world to me as it was my first in-person event since the pandemic,” said Planera. “I really enjoyed it and received a lot of great feedback to make this event even bigger and better for the future. It was great to meet students who plan on enrolling in my graphic design and visual communication courses this Fall of ‘22.

The new visual communication program goes hand-in-hand with the graphic design degrees and certificates that we offer. I hope they continue to choose SSC for their college education.”

Six high schools submitted entries into the competition: Bremen, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, Richards, Shepard and Thornton Fractional South. Students entered work in nine different categories: Commercial/ Promo, Creative Mobile Project, Live Multi-Camera, News Program, News Story or Feature, Podcast, PSA, Short Subject-Comedy and Short Subject-Drama.

The forty entries were judged on aesthetic quality, technical quality, program design and overall effectiveness.

In addition to the student awards, high schools competed for the Regional Award of Distinction, which is determined by the highest average score per entry. Jodi Pelini, a professor at Shepard High School, accepted this award. “The SSC awards ceremony was the highlight of the 20212022 school year. After two years of virtual ceremonies, it was wonderful to be back in-person with the students to honor all their achievements. The competition was unbelievably fierce this year which made it all the more meaningful to take home the Regional Award of Distinction. I couldn’t be prouder of our students for their creative talent and their endless dedication to telling memorable stories,” said Pelini.

HARRIS ANNOUNCES $20 MILLION UPGRADE TO 147TH STREET METRA STATION State Senator Napoleon Harris, III announced a $20 million investment will be coming to Harvey to replace the platforms and add an elevator to the 147th Street Metra Station to make it more accessible to people with disabilities.

“After years of disinvestment, the 147th Street Metra Station in Harvey will see a $20 million investment to make it more accessible to the community,” Harris said. “This upgrade is vital as it will assist with developing the social, economic, and environmental territory around this Harvey Metra location.”

It has been over three decades since the 147th Street Metra Station saw an upgrade. The project will replace the station’s existing concrete platform, headhouse, and passenger shelters and improve the station by creating a new entrance and adding bicycle parking. The new facility will also include elevator access to the platform, which will make it accessible to people with disabilities.

Through a competitive grant process, an Elgin-based contractor IHC Construction Companies LLC, will spearhead the project and has committed to subcontracting 25% of the work with women and minority-owned businesses.

The station will be closed beginning May 16, 2022, for approximately one year. Throughout the duration of this project, passengers are advised to access Metra trains on 144th Street (Ivanhoe Station) or 154th Street (Harvey Station).

HUNTER WELCOMES NEW ST. LAURENCE ARTS INCUBATOR PROJECT State Senator Mattie Hunter is excited to welcome the St. Laurence Arts Incubator project in Grand Crossing, a $1.7 million initiative to open doors for Chicago’s artists of color.

The St. Laurence Arts Incubator is the newest and largest project to date from the Rebuild Foundation, which has worked to preserve cultural sites like the Stony Island Arts Bank, the Retreat at Currency Exchange Café, Kenwood Gardens, and the Dorchester Art + Housing Collaborative.

“The work that artists do is impactful, and I am glad the city has invested in this new opportunity to support them,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “In particular, this incubator uplifts Black and Brown artists and entrepreneurs, and will be located right here in the Southside.”

The St. Laurence Arts Incubator will be a hub for creative investment, production, and education by providing Black and Brown artists and creative entrepreneurs with the space, resources, tools, and opportunities to develop their businesses in their communities.

A new era of creative empowerment and artistic production will be generated by over 40,000 square feet of artists’ studios, makerspace, classrooms for creative entrepreneurship courses, an archive laboratory and more.

“I am excited for the ways this renovation will inspire and rejuvenate the community,” Hunter said. “We must preserve the spaces that elevate Black and Brown artistry and culture and provide opportunities for communal fellowship.”

State funding for the Rebuild Foundation includes $950,000 from the Illinois Arts Council for the Stony Island Arts Bank and $750,000from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, including $250,000 from DCEO’s Office of Minority Economic Empowerment.

The Housing Equity Accelerator Fellowship expands on Capital Impact Partners’ Equitable Development Initiative, which was started in 2018 to support emerging developers of color to participate in real estate development in their regions.

This new fellowship program stems from a $21 million pilot program launched by the Amazon Housing Equity Fund to support emerging real estate developers of color in Amazon’s hometown communities in the Puget Sound region of Washington state; the Arlington, Virginia, region; and Nashville, Tennessee.

According to a 2019 study from the Urban Institute, the Washington metropolitan region requires an additional 375,000 housing units by 2030 to meet growing demand. To address this housing shortfall and to build more inclusive communities, it is essential that government agencies and a diversity of key stakeholders coordinate their efforts. As members of their communities, the fellowship participants will engage with and listen to community concerns, and their work will provide greater access to employment and opportunity for residents.

Several of the fellowship participants are alumni of Capital Impact Partners’ Equitable Development Initiative (EDI), which has trained, or is training, nearly 200 developers of color since 2018 in Detroit; the Washington metropolitan area; and the San Francisco Bay Area. Many participants in those three regions have since gone on to create their own organizations, build local developments, and foster peer-to-peer networks.

Capital Impact also launched the EDI in Dallas on April 7.

This is an important effort given the gaps in representation for real estate developers of color, including: Just 2 percent of real estate development companies are Black-led, according to Enterprise Community Partners.

Real estate firms led by people of color control only 1.5% of real estate assets that are under management, according to Enterprise.

Just 4.4 percent of commercial real estate professionals are Black, according to a 2013 survey by NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association.

Just 5% of the Urban Land Institute’s members are African American, according to a 2020 report.

Nearly 200 businesses in district Sims represents receive $4.5 million in business assistance State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. announced recently that 200 businesses across the 17th district were awarded nearly $4.5 million in funding from the Back to Business program thanks to his advocacy and support.

“As we continue to deal with the impact COVID-19 has had on our daily lives, we are also seeing local businesses face tremendous financial distress as they also work to bounce back,” said Sims (D-Chicago).

“The Back to Business Grant program has continued to be a nation-leading small business assistance program that has provided thousands of businesses across the state with millions of dollars in assistance to help them through these challenging times.”

A total of $4.475 million was awarded to 174 businesses in the 17th District.

The B2B grants are awarded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity using funds allocated to them by the American Rescue Plan through last year’s state budget.

Because of the fiscally responsible budgeting approach taken by the state, Illinois saw an increase in funds available to assist small businesses.

Recorded at Cosimo Matassa’s Jazz City Studio in New Orleans between 1970-72, the recently-unearthed album showcases a largely acoustic, more contemplative side of Nocentelli, who is best known for his hard-edged funk licks. Backing Nocentelli is an all-star line-up of New Orleans royalty, including Allen Toussaint (piano), James Black (drums), and both George Porter Jr. (bass) and Zigaboo Modeliste (drums) of The Meters.

Another Side finds a young Nocentelli channeling his contemporaries in the burgeoning singer-songwriter movement─think Bill Withers, James Taylor, and Toussaint meeting up at Link Wray’s 3-Track Shack.

Deeply introspective, the warm and funky folk album features nine original songs by Nocentelli, plus a soulful rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song,” which had recently hit the American airwaves. Half a century later, these recordings sound just as fresh and engaging as the day they were recorded.

What makes Another Side even more extraordinary, however, is the fact that the album—which could have easily become a classic in the ‘70s singer-songwriter canon—sat untouched for decades; miraculously surviving the devastating blow of Hurricane Katrina, only to be found 2,000 miles away at a Southern California swap meet in 2018 by record collector Mike Nishita. steps from the week behind you and focus your mental energy on how to continue progressing toward your goals.

Make every effort count When time is precious, there’s little room for lackluster effort. While you may not be able to realistically put everything into all that you do, you’ll likely discover a pattern of greater success in the activities where you invest yourself more deeply.

Ultimately, you may find it easier to pass on activities that don’t pique your interest enough to command your full energy.

Recognize there’s no guilt in putting yourself first. Think about what you give to your friends, work and other external forces in life. When your effort is limited, chances are your results are, too. The same applies when you’re working on yourself. If you only give what energy is leftover after giving to everyone and everything else, you’re not likely to achieve the results you desire. Understanding that giving all of yourself is the only way to reach what you aspire is the first step toward letting go of the guilt you may feel when you make yourself and your own time the first priority.

Give yourself credit and acknowledge your achievements. When you’re busy chasing your goals and dreams, it’s easy to lose sight of what you’ve already accomplished. Take time to celebrate victories and be proud of what you have accomplished. Closing the Gap on Lung Cancer Care (StatePoint) Lung cancer research is moving at a rapid pace, with researchers learning more about the disease and working hard to find treatments to help save and extend lives. At the same time, Black Americans account for only 3.1% of participants in clinical trials for cancer drugs.

Experts say that this needs to change.

“Clinical trials are not only the cornerstone of lung cancer research efforts, but are often the best treatment option available,” says Ozuru Ukoha, M.D., chair, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. “For these studies however, it’s important to enroll a diverse group of people so researchers can learn about how lung cancer treatments work in different people. Though Black Americans have the highest mortality rate in lung cancer and stand to benefit the most from clinical trials, they are underrepresented.”

“Awareness, Trust and Action,” a new awareness campaign from the American Lung Association with support from AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb and Merck, aims to encourage Black Americans to speak with their healthcare providers about clinical trials and their treatment options. As part of the campaign, the Lung Association is sharing a few fast facts: • Diversity matters: It’s important to enroll a diverse group of people in clinical trials so that researchers can understand the effects of potential treatment methods on different patient populations. Unfortunately, many groups of people are underrepresented in clinical trials, including Black Americans. This happens for many reasons, one of them being the long-standing history of racial bias in healthcare, which impacts access to care and trust in providers.

• Participation is safe: Clinical trials are highly monitored research studies that can test many things, including how to prevent a disease, new ways to detect or diagnose a disease or new ways to treat a disease. Each participant in a clinical trial is treated with the highest level of care. Often times, the most appropriate treatment option for a lung cancer patient is through a clinical trial.

• Disparities persist: Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer of both men and women in the United States, however, Black Americans with lung cancer are less likely to be diagnosed at an early stage, less likely to receive surgical treatment, and less likely to receive any treatment at all compared to white Americans. Black patients deserve better care, including the opportunity to benefit from the cutting-edge therapies clinical trials may offer.

A Chicago Italian Beef institution rolls out new items

The Beef it Up Truck will be exclusively available for private events like weddings, large events and parties but will showcase its famous beef at some signature events throughout the city this summer.

Buona Beef began in 1981 by Joe and Peggy Buonavolanto. Forty years later, there are 26 restaurants in locations and it still owned and operated by the third generation family members.

Buona Beef has a new food truck it has unveiled. The Beef it Up Truck will be on the street serving up Buona Beef’s popular items and also will make appearances at private events. It will be at Taste of Chicgao and Lolapalooza. The truck enables the restaurant brand, which began in 1981 by Joe and Peggy Buonavolanto, to have a presence at community events as part of Summertime Chi. The idea for the truck has been in the works for five or so years ago, Buona Beef tried to do a version of the truck when new restaurants opened. It never really got off the ground. With new people came new vision for the food truck concept. Now, it is here and will be on site for new restaurant openings and community events. The truck allows Buona Beef to make the beef and other items exactly how it would be made in the restaurant. The goal is to have a mini Buona kitchen on the truck, with the same quality and the same consistency.

“We’re really focused, as a company initiative, to continue to serve communities in the best way that we can.

Our focus is making sure our guests are really happy and getting everything they need from us,” said Candice Jordan,

director of marketing for Buona Beef, adding Buona Beef will continue to put the needs of the guests first.

Buona Beef also has a vegan beef, called the Vegan “Beefless” Sandwich. People wanted more vegan and plantbased options. The restaurant took the customer feedback seriously and made a plan to create menu innovations. Two years ago, Buona Beef took a look at their menu and decided what they could do differently and what they could do better for their guests.

Buona Beef’s executive chef partnered with Upton’s Natural, a Chicago-based company that specializes in vegan and plant-based products using soy, seitan and jackfruit.

The result is a vegan beef sandwich that has the same flavor profile as the original beef.

“A lot of the success goes to his genius behind being able to come up with that recipe and making it as close to an Italian Beef as you can get, but still a 100 % plant-based,” Jordan said, adding there were a lot of taste tests to get the desired outcome.

Since it has been introduced last April, the vegan beef is still popular item on the menu, with people still ordering it. Buona Beef doesn’t see the popularity of it dying down anytime soon.

Buona Beef is always trying to engage guests in new ways that are on trend. There are new sandwiches including the Saucy Beef, Cheesy Cheddar Beef as well as the Buona Beef Bites. They want to be able to engage with all kinds of customers who might have different preferences than the traditional guests.

In two locations, Skokie and Lakemoor, there will be kiosks of the Original Rainbow Cone where guests can get the original cone, as well as a vegan sorbet. That partnership happened in the Beverly location of Buona Beef six years ago. The owner of Original Rainbow Cone wanted to partner with a company that would uphold the same standards of quality and service and tradition. It was a natural fit.

Buona Beef credits its longevity to long tenured team members, tenured executives, great recipes and a commitment to quality and service.

“It’s the family values that are instilled, not just in the corporate team, but within all of our employees, throughout the organization, our great all-natural recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation,” Jordan said. “And, never steering away from the quality of the product. We have just always wanted to define ourselves to be separate than a food restaurant. We’re focused on high quality ingredients and customer service.”
