SURPRISES HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WITH $20,000 COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Foot Locker Foundation, Inc. recently surprised high school senior Cade Pinalto of Chicago with a celebration and an oversized check in the amount of $20,000 as part of its annual Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program at Lane Tech High School.

From the classroom to his community, Cade is an inspiring example of overcoming obstacles to become the best that he can be. Having founded Sidelined USA, a non-profit that supports athletes who can no longer compete due to a career-ending injury or condition, he has built up his volunteer/mentor staff and actively sought out partnerships and sponsorships to further help other student athletes. He’s also a student basketball coach and a stadium announcer for the baseball team. Achieving academic success with a 4.7 GPA and working towards getting into one of the top ten business programs in the country, the Foot Locker Scholar Athlete Scholarship will help Cade as he pursues an education in business finance and looks forward to helping others achieve their goals.

To date, the Foundation has distributed nearly $3 million in college scholarships to 140 deserving high school seniors.

BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD OF ILLINOIS OPENS FIRST-EVER NEIGHBORHOOD-BASED CENTER Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) has opened a new door to help build healthier communities. The Blue Door Neighborhood Center is the first-ever neighborhood-based center for BCBSIL. STATE TREASURER FRERICHS’ I-CASH PROGRAM BREAKS RECORD, RETURNS $200 MILLION A record-breaking $200 million in forgotten cash and securities has been returned to its owners during the past 10 months, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs said recently. It is the largest amount in the program’s 58-year history.

Such milestones typically are recorded in July to capture the state’s entire fiscal year, which is July 1- June 30. With two months remaining in the current fiscal year, that means the state treasurer’s office will shatter previous records set in fiscal years 2018, 2017 and 2016.

South Suburban Teacher And Author Provides Mentorship And Culturally Responsive Education

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week across the country and there is one south suburban teacher that has gone above and beyond to connect with his students. First generation Ghanian American, Samuel Agyarko Jr. teaches at Thornwood High School and is committed to providing culturally responsive learning experiences for his students along with offering them mentorship.

Growing up, Agyarko said that he noticed “there really is no space for culturally responsive education,” and wanted to change that by going into education and creating that space in his own classroom.

In essence, culturally responsive teaching is grounded in a teacher’s cultural competence and encourages each student to relate their learning experiences to their own cultural experiences.

“My bachelor’s degree was in Applied Computer Information Systems but it just wasn’t speaking to me spiritually so I switched gears, left IT behind, and got my masters in Educational Leadership and committed to working with students in disenfranchised communities who have had an experience similar to mine,” said Agyarko.

While working as a teacher and developing his own best practices for connecting with students and

allowing them to be their authentic selves in his class, he noticed that even though there were guidance counselors and school psychologists, there was still a lack of social and emotional resources for students.

“School psychologists that are supposed to connect with students on a social-emotional and holistic level don’t really have the capacity to do so. I recognized that during my growth as a teacher, that the vast majority of my conversations with my students were not about the content of my classes, they were about how to conduct themselves or how to channel their frustrations,” said Agyarko.

It was this experience that led Agyarko to start his own nonprofit organization, The A-TEAM, Educational Consulting with Response to Intervention Services. The nonprofit’s goal is to provide culturally responsive educative mechanisms for student success which further extend the work that Agyarko is doing at Thornwood.

The A-TEAM, Educational Consulting with Response to Intervention Services was created to provide disenfranchised communities with learning opportunities outside of what they are offered during the school day.

necessarily a black or brown issue” because it is “based on economics and class.”

“To level the playing field, I started my nonprofit to provide workshops for these disenfranchised students and communities who don’t necessarily have the resources or the capacity to focus on the fun stuff because they have to concentrate on reading, writing,

and arithmetic,” said Agyarko.

In addition to teaching at Thornwood, Agyarko also serves as the Work-Based Learning Coordinator where he is responsible for bringing in culturally responsive guest speakers which allow students to see people who look like them from backgrounds similar to theirs who have executed a plan for success.

Tutors and participants needed for Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program SOUTH HOLLAND, IL – South Suburban College is currently seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program.

The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program.

Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market.

New tutor Summer Semester Training Sessions will take place at the college’s Main Campus in South Holland on May 20-23rd

from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with Literacy Training Certification.

Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods.

Tutoring sites have been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library.

Tutoring schedules are based on the availability of the tutors and the learners, and the availability of space and hours of the tutoring sites.

Through Sense to Soul, Kern helps his students achieve their own personal development as they develop their musical gifts.

Sense to Soul School of Music will host a free performance on May 18 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the South Holland Library.

“I’ve always had this dream or this vision to have a place where young musicians and young

composers and artists could come and develop themselves and their music and art,” said Kern.

“My vision for Sense to Soul School of Music is to train adults and young people in vocal music and instrumental music.”

For almost two decades, Kern taught music for Chicago Public Schools and said he was moved to open his own music school when he saw music education programs in public schools slowly start to dwindle. He wanted to make sure there was an affordable option for students that were interested in continuing to learn.

“I’ve seen the demise of the music programs in Chicago Public Schools and our children really need music to build their creativeness and to build their self-esteem. Music can give

them a view into what the world looks like and could create opportunities for them outside of their own neighborhoods because music brings people together,” said Kern.

Sense to Soul School of Music offers classes for young people and adults starting at just $15 per lesson.

“It’s important that we stay affordable to make sure that we are creating access for as many kids as possible. When I was a student back in the day, lessons were $10 and my parents were able to afford that,” said Kern. “Now, you can take lessons anywhere from $25 to $50 or even more and in this economy, parents just don’t have the money for it. I wanted to make sure that kids had the opportunity to learn a

musical instrument and be able to use that to help them with the rest of their life.”

Aside from providing lessons to kids and promoting early access to music education, Kern also targets adults and elders that might be retiring and looking for a new hobby to keep their minds sharp.

“As we age we need challenges to keep our minds sharp and music does that. Music challenges you not only mentally, but also physically. Piano players will get their fingers moving, vocalists also have a lot of physical things that go on inside their body to be able to sing and it’s good for older people to partake in music on some level,” said Kern.

Black Men Still Incarcerated at Disproportionate Levels

The fact that African Americans make up a disproportionate amount of the United States’ prison population remains a defining characteristic of the nation’s criminal justice system, and though the latest numbers from the U.S. Sentencing Commission show a gradual change, many organizations said it’s still cause for alarm.

The most recent available report shows that African Americans comprise only about 12 percent of the total population in America, but still represent 33 percent of the federal and state prison population.

By contrast, 64 percent of American adults are white, but just 30 percent of those individuals are locked up.

It’s statistics like those that have some organizations and media outlets trying to get to the bottom of why America continues to lock up African-Americans, particularly Black men. (The Vera Institute have continued to write about this issueand CNN now has a series called “The Redemption Project with Van Jones,”which airs Sundays at 9 p.m.)

According to the most recent U.S. Sentencing Report, which analyzed data over five years from 2012 to 2016, black men serve sentences that are on average 19.1 percent longer than those for white men with similar crimes.

Without considering all of the facts involved per case, some might argue that criminal history and other mitigating circumstances come into play when a judge imposes a sentence – regardless of color.

However, the Commission’s report

“Violence in an offender’s criminal history does not appear to contribute to the sentenced imposed,” according to the authors of the Commission’s study.

When accounting for violence in an offender’s past, black men received sentences that were on average 20.4 percent longer than that of white men, the report noted.

Though the gap is closing presumably because of stiffer policing in rural and predominately white areas and the opioid epidemic that’s hit white areas hardest, agencies in cities around the country are still trying to offer ways to stop the mass incarceration of blacks.

justice system.

And once justice-involved, climbing out of poverty becomes harder, the report said.

Also, the report’s authors said the local government should be doing more to support those who are justice-involved, including those who are formerly incarcerated and those with parole, probation, and community supervision.

These individuals and their families struggle with access to housing, employment, educational opportunities, and meeting health and mental health needs and experience a patchwork

of services that are under-resourced and not targeted to meet the complex challenges that come before, during, and after justice involvement, FPWA officials said.

The result is a continuing cycle of poverty and incarceration that has a devastating impact on families for generations, they said.

“If we are serious about ending mass incarceration, if we want to disrupt systems that criminalize the poor, we must better utilize and resource the organizations that are already providing critical services in these communities,” said FPWA CEO and Executive Director Jennifer Jones Austin in a news release.

“Systemic racism drives both poverty and the mass incarceration of low-income people, especially people of color. This cycle of poverty and criminal justice involvement feeds on itself and creates herculean barriers to achieving economic and social advancement, for those who have been justice involved and for their loved ones,” Jones said.

“There are proven ways to support communities experiencing high levels of poverty, income insecurity and incarceration. Human services organizations are a key part of those solutions,” she said.

There’s a need for more resources, “more compassion, and more political will to end the poverty to prison pipeline and we must also recognize the role of intergenerational trauma in creating the pipeline and provide mental health and trauma-informed services to those who are justice-impacted,” said Michael A. Lindsey, Ph.D., MSW, MPH, executive director of the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University.

Kamedis Clinical Study Validates Traditional Chinese Botanical Efficacy in Eczema Treatment Kamedis™, a provider of advanced botanical solutions for chronic skin disorders, recently announced the results of a clinical study confirming that the traditional Chinese botanicals in its homeopathic over-the-counter Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream play a pivotal role in the product’s ability to reduce eczema rashes.

According to the study, the commercially available Kamedis cream was 44% more effective in treating atopic dermatitis than the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts. It was also 23% more effective than a competitive OTC brand widely used to provide eczema relief.

The double-blind, randomized, controlled study is the first in the U.S. designed to determine the efficacy of traditional Chinese botanicals in commercial dermatologic treatments.

“We know from more than a decade of R&D that our patented combinations of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs help restore damaged skin to health, but the validation in this study is a significant milestone for the company as well as for the millions of people who suffer from eczema,” said Roni Kramer, founder of Kamedis and lead director of its U.S. strategic business unit. “The results demonstrate that ingredients from nature still play a major role in our search for healing. When sourced, extracted and combined properly, they outperform known vehicles and moisturizers in the marketplace.”

The product: Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream utilizes a patented formulation of Chinese Rhubarb, Great Burnet, Tree of Heaven, Baikal Skullcap, Cnidium Fruit and Licorice extracts along with active and inactive ingredients used in conventional OTC products. Previous studies in published literature have shown that the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of these botanicals reduce eczema flareups by protecting the skin from further irritation, maintaining a moist skin environment, and facilitating relief of impaired skin barrier functions.

The method: The clinical trial involved 108 children and adults from ages 3 to 73 with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis who were randomly divided into three groups of equal size. One group used the Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream, one used the Kamedis formula without the botanical extracts, and one used a leading third-party OTC product. All three groups used a Kamedis wash for the body and face, followed by one of the three randomized treatment creams for the affected areas on the face and body.

The results: After 28 days, patients treated with the complete, botanically rich Kamedis Calm Eczema Therapy Cream showed a 6.8% improvement in rash extent and severity as measured by the Body Surface Area (BSA) score, compared to just 4.7% for the Kamedis cream without the botanicals and 5.5% for the non-Kamedis product. That represents a 44% difference in BSA improvement between the complete Kamedis product and the Kamedis formula without botanicals, and a 23% difference between the complete product and the competitive OTC product.

In addition, clear improvement was visually evident after 28 days of using the Kamedis cream. No adverse events were reported.

“This is a ground-breaking study that documents the therapeutic benefits of traditional Chinese botanicals in pharmaceuticals for the first time,” said Kamedis Vice President Clinical, Regulation and QA Deganit BarakShinar. “This has significant implications for the rest of Kamedis’ product line, future product development

by Kamedis and others, and consumers seeking better solutions for various health conditions.”

Complete results are scheduled for publication in the June issue of Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.

“It is an honor to be named the 2019 ABFF Ambassador. I have admired the work of the American Black Film Festival for many years and am looking forward to being a part of the great work they do in the black film community,” expressed Anthony.

La La currently stars in the #1 hit show, “Power” as Lakeisha Grant on the STARZ Network and recently served as Executive Producer of the hit BET docuseries “Killer Curves.” Her film credits include the critically-acclaimed Spike Lee film, Chi-Raq, ABFF alum and producer Will Packer’s Think Like a Man and Think Like a Man Too, and David E. All Blues, the forthcoming covers album from the Peter Frampton Band, is set for release on June 7 via UMe. The album is a collection of Frampton’s favorite blues classics and was recorded with his longtime touring band, made up of Adam Lester (guitar/vocals), Rob Arthur (keyboards/guitar/vocals) and Dan Wojciechowski (drums).

“I Just Want To Make Love To You” (featuring Kim Wilson) is the first song to be released from the new album, and is available now with digital album pre-order.

All Blues was recorded at Frampton’s studio in Nashville, Studio Phenix, and was co-produced

by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay. The album features additional collaborations with Larry Carlton, Sonny Landreth and Steve Morse.

The vinyl will be available as a double LP and also as a limited edition translucent blue color pressing exclusively at PeterFrampton.com. The double LP will include the bonus track “I Feel So Good,” which was written by Big Bill Broonzy and popularized by Muddy Waters.

Of the album, Frampton explains, “I have always loved to play the blues. When we formed Humble Pie, the first material we played together was just that. For the last two summers I had been playing a handful of blues numbers every night on stage with Steve Miller Band. I enjoyed this immensely and it gave me the idea of doing an ‘All Blues’ album live in the studio with my band. We started the resulting sessions 9 days after coming off the road last year. Over a two-week period, we recorded 23 tracks, all live in the studio. The energy of these tracks is completely different from building a track one instrument at a time. With this recording, we pay tribute to all the original artists who invented this incredible music. I hope you can hear and feel our enjoyment. I’m not sure if you can say we had fun playing the blues. But we definitely did.”

To support All Blues, Frampton will be hosting a new six-week series on SiriusXM’s Deep Tracks channel. “The Peter Frampton Show” will premiere on Friday, May 10 at 10:00am ET on SiriusXM radios (channel 27) and on the SiriusXM app.

CALENDAR Annual Chicago Jazz Festival Features World-Renowned Artists The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recently announced the headliners and festival dates for the 41st Annual Chicago Jazz Festival, happening August 23 to September 1 at Millennium Park, the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E. Washington St.) and at other venues throughout the city. The free-admission festival will include a special tribute to Nat King Cole by his brother Freddy Cole and a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, the festival’s programming partner.

“The Chicago Jazz Festival has become a celebrated staple of our city’s cultural life and a highlight of our summer season,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “This year’s celebration of the Jazz Institute of Chicago, along with a lineup of legendary innovators, homegrown icons and

new stars promises to thrill and inspire music lovers from Chicago and around the globe.”

Other performances at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion include: Cécile McLorin Salvant, Christian McBride, Eddie Palmieri, Ambrose Akinmusire Quartet, Ben Wendel Seasons, George Freeman and Billy Branch, Camila Meza, Latino-America Unidas with Miguel Zenon, Antonio Sanchez, Melissa Aldana and David Virelles, Joel Ross, Ryan Cohan’s Originations and the Dave Rempis Quartet.

“This is a great line-up of headliners, and our expanded ten-day festival will animate our city and neighborhoods with numerous free performance and place a spotlight on our great clubs and presenting institutions,” said Mark Kelly, DCASE Commissioner.

“Celebrating Chicago’s music legacy, we will honor Nat King Cole, the Jazz Institute of Chicago, The Art Ensemble of Chicago, and many of our great musicians as we welcome artists from across the globe.”

The Chicago Jazz Festival will also include free performances at neighborhood clubs and venues August 23 to 29, leading up to the concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center and in Millennium Park. The additional performances offer festival audiences even more opportunities to experience Chicago’s exceptional jazz sounds at some of the city’s legendary music venues.

The Chicago Jazz Festival showcases free live performances by important Chicago artists alongside some of the greatest names from around the world on multiple

stages. The festival is produced by DCASE and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Local Eateries Announced For Taste of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) recently announced the lineup of 82 eateries that will participate in the 39th Annual Taste of Chicago presented

by DoorDash – the world’s largest free-admission food festival – this July 10–14 in Grant Park.

Showcasing Chicago’s diverse culinary scene, this year’s list of 41 five-day participants, 24 pop-ups and 17 food trucks will offer Taste-goers an endless variety of more than 300 menu items to suit every palate.

“As the culinary capital of the world, the Taste of Chicago will give residents and visitors alike the opportunity to sample some of the greatest foods this city has to offer,” said Mayor Emanuel.

“Since its inception, the Taste of Chicago has become a summertime staple and this year’s lineup of worldrenowned restaurants, food trucks and pop-ups will be even more vibrant and diverse than ever before.”

This year Taste of Chicago is excited to welcome its new presenting sponsor DoorDash, the largest and fastest growing on-demand destination for door-to-door delivery in more than 4,000 cities in the United States and Canada. DoorDash connects Chicagoans with their favorite stores and restaurants, including many participating in this year’s Taste of Chicago festival.

“Connecting people with the best in their cities is core to the DoorDash mission and we’re excited to partner with the city of Chicago to bring the best in local food to residents and visitors this summer,” said Head of Brand at DoorDash David Bornoff.

to the event in 2019, a 48% increase from 25 in 2018. The new food eateries include 11 five-day participants, 17 pop-ups serving for one or two days and 9 food trucks. Additionally, the festival received a 12% increase in the number of applications from food businesses located across the city and representing a wide variety of cuisines. Admission to the Taste of Chicago is FREE, and tickets for food and beverages can be purchased in strips of 14 tickets for $10. Whether craving the robust flavors found in ethnic cuisine, epicurean delights, sweet treats, classic Chicago dishes – and more – Chicagoans and visitors won’t want to miss this year’s Taste!

NEW! Taste of Chicago Community Dinners New this year, Taste of Chicago vendors may participate in the 2019 Taste of Chicago Community Eats Program, an opportunity to host a community organization or group for a free, community meal. The dinners will

all take place on Wednesday, June 26, at restaurants and venues across the city to create a positive social impact and extend the reach of Taste of Chicago. More information will be announced in June.

Lifeway Foods Taste Kitchen The Lifeway Foods Taste Kitchen dishes up a full menu of cooking demonstrations by local and national chefs including Chef Mary Nguyen of Saigon Sisters, Chef Martial Noguier of Bistronomic, Chef Michael Sheerin of Taureaux Tavern and Chef Giancarlo Valera of Tanta Chicago. Each day of the cooking demonstrations held on the Buckingham Fountain Plaza will feature a different culinary theme.

The full schedule of cooking demonstrations will be announced in June.

CH Vodka Cocktail Lounge, Goose Island Backyard Brewery and Stella Rosa Wine Garden The CH Vodka Cocktail Lounge, the city’s largest pop-up bar, will offer mixology specials to enjoy by Buckingham Fountain. The specialty cocktail menu during the Taste of Chicago will include two new refreshing drinks, the Chicago Mule (made with Jeppson’s Malort and CH Vodka) and the Peach-Mango Lime Rickey, as well as their much-loved Tropical Rum Punch and Bourbon Pineapple Smash. The popular Goose Island Backyard Brewery will offer Taste-goers a select list of craft beers and ciders that include Goose Island Born and Raised, Goose Island Next Coast IPA, Goose Island Natural Villain, Virtue Cider Mezzo Spritz, Golden Road Mango Cart, Elysian Spacedust IPA and many more. In 2018, more than 1.5 million residents and visitors enjoyed Taste of Chicago, reflecting the vibrant diversity of the City of Chicago. Over 3,000 people were employed by Chicago restaurants and vendors, and more than 600 artists and performers were hired to entertain Taste-goers over the five-day festival. The event contributes an estimated $106 million annually in total business activity to the Chicago economy.
