NEWS briefly EDUCATION COLLEGE STUDENTS EARN EXTRA INCOME AS ONLINE ENGLISH TEACHERS Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the online teaching industry and demand for qualified online ESL teachers is proving to be a viable option for new graduates, according to a news release.

NEW REPORT: PATIENTS PAY THE PRICE WITH PROLIFERATION OF SUBSTANDARD HEALTH PLANS A new report published by 30 patient organizations shows the significant risks patients face when they enroll in non-compliant and substandard health insurance products, and details ways state and federal lawmakers can help protect these vulnerable consumers.

The report, “Under-Covered: How ‘Insurance-Like’ Products Are Leaving Patients Exposed,” issued by a coalition representing millions of people with pre-existing conditions, details eight different types of “non-compliant plans” that do not adhere to Affordable Care Act (ACA) consumer protections like coverage for pre-existing conditions, elimination of annual and lifetime coverage limits, and coverage for essential health benefits.

The plans have proliferated in recent years, and in many cases, are marketed to consumers who don’t fully understand what they’re purchasing. As a result, patients are often vulnerable to exorbitant medical bills. This report serves as a warning to consumers to avoid these plans – and a call to action to lawmakers.

EEOC CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AGAINST ASIAN AMERICANS AND PACIFIC ISLANDERS IN THE UNITED STATES The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) unanimously approved a resolution condemning the recent violence, harassment, and acts of bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The resolution reaffirms the Commission’s commitment to combat all forms of harassment and discrimination against members of AAPI communities, and to ensure equal opportunity, inclusion, and dignity for all in the workplace.

“The Commission condemns the recent violence and discrimination against AAPI persons in the strongest possible terms,” said EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows.

“Hatred, xenophobia, and racism violate our nation’s core principles. The Commission stands in solidarity with the victims, their families, and AAPI communities across the nation, and we pledge to work together to address harassment, bias, and discrimination in the workplace.”

The EEOC advances equal opportunity in the workplace by enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination.

Southland College Prep Senior talks about recent successes, plans for the future Continued from page 1

Bri’Yon Watts, a senior at Southland College Prep Charter High School, has been racking up awards and accolades in the Speech and Drama space.

During the 2020-21 speech season, Watts earned a total of 23 first place medals in Dramatic Duet Interpretation and Poetry Reading, including being named champion of two regional events and the state final.

Watts recently captured the Illinois state championship in Dramatic Interpretation.

He is also set to compete in the National August Wilson Monologue Competition in May, after placing second in the Chicago competition.

Watts said he wanted to compete in the August Wilson Monologue Competition after doing research on the playwright who is known for “Fences” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Through that research, he found out who Wilson was as a person and what his goals were.

“I was very appreciative because he introduced me to talented and inspirational actors and actresses which I still love today, Viola Davis and Denzel Washington, two of my personal favorites. And, he really told the stories of people who look like me, years beyond, not even just the history but also the culture of our people.

And, knowing that, I knew I had to take on doing this competition,” he said, and added this was the third time he com-

peted in the August Wilson Monologue Competition.

Watts said he is very well acquainted with Wilson’s text. He said while competing doesn’t get easier over time, he does get more excited each time he competes.

“I still get those little nerves here and there, from time to time thinking about it, getting ready to perform, which is natural. But I always think about the fact that I’m here to tell a story and I’m here to convey a message to people. And, there’s someone out there who needs to hear this specific message in this moment,” he said.

Watts added, knowing that someone needs to hear the message is a way he holds himself accountable to make sure the message isn’t incumbered by his nerves. This time, Watts performed a monologue of the character Youngblood, Darnell, from Wilson’s “Jitney.” He said he picked the piece because he saw a multitude of things from Youngblood. One was his will to try to do better.

“I saw him as a real person in a real situation. Just seeing him and his decisions and his thought process, all through just this one little monologue, it felt like I needed to choose this piece for this year because he really showcased lots of different things that we as people just think about or just do. It was really real for me,” he said.

Because of the pandemic, Watts has performed in these competitions virtually through Zoom, which means there is not an audience watching his performances.

He said he loves having an audience and knowing there are people that he is giving the message to.

“Although, you don’t break the fourth wall, you still can feel it in the room. You can still feel your audience in the room, how they’re taking it all in. And, honestly, at times it will boost your performance and keep you going, and it allows you to feel heard, it allows you to feel seen, it allows you to feel understood, and that’s the great thing about having an audience,” he said.

Watts said despite not having an audience, knowing that people would see the performance made him want to do a really good job. He said he wanted to make sure the audience still got the same feeling and the 110 percent.

Watts will attend Duke University in Fall 2021. He will co-major in theater and psychology and said he saw a connection.

He said while he loves acting and wants to act and direct, he saw a connection with psychology and theater.

“I felt that understanding psychology and how the mind works and really why we do the things we do, why we say the things we say, why we act the way we act, or why we just live and exist the way we do, I saw those are things I can take and learn more about and put that in with what I want to do with acting and directing. Because I feel those kinds of things will make it more natural, they’ll make whatever stories I continue to tell more authentic, more real and will just help me overall,” he said.

to return to the workplace, so staying flexible and responsive to their needs will be critical.”

McDonald added, “Regardless of timing, companies should take a measured and carefully planned office re-entry approach and keep employees’ health and safety top of mind. Leaders should also use the opportunity to solicit staff feedback to shape corporate culture for the future.”

Carpenters Union’s Career Connections Program Helps Illinois High Schools Fill Vocational Education Void The Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters is partnering with high schools across Illinois to offer career pathways to students interested in the building trades.

The Regional Council’s Career Connections program is designed to help high school teachers introduce students to basic and intermediate carpentry, advanced skills in commercial and residential construction, and the essentials of construction site safety. The program also includes training in the employability that research shows employers value most, including: goal setting, positive attitude, punctuality, teamwork, and taking initiative.

“The Career Connections program is designed to introduce students to a lifelong career in the Carpenters Union,” said Gary Perinar, executive secretary-treasurer of the Chicago Regional Council.

“This is a cost-effective initiative for high schools with materials written by United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ instructors who are the best at what they do. The response from students has been outstanding and we look forward to partnering with more high schools across the state.”

Career Connections fills the void of vocational education programs that were once ubiquitous in high schools but have become increasingly rare over the past 50 years.

The Regional Council’s Career Connections program is designed to help high school teachers introduce students to basic and intermediate carpentry, advanced skills in commercial and residential construction, and the essentials of construction site safety.

Teacher support is a major feature of the program. All books come with an annotated edition that provides teacher class notes, rubrics for each project, project evaluations, a tool safety operation checklist, a comprehensive skills matrix, and estimated timelines for teaching.

“The curriculum was created to help high schools start their

own program, said Vince Sticca, director of the Chicago Regional Council’s Apprentice and Training Program. “We have a complete program that tells you what tools you need, as well as project blueprints and step-by-step information. It’s a tremendous resource.”

Royal Caribbean Welcomes Brand-New Ship Setting course for a lifetime of adventure, Royal Caribbean International’s Odyssey of the Seas completed the final chapter in its construction odyssey recently.

The highly anticipated marvel officially became the 25th ship in the cruise line’s award-winning fleet, following a virtual rendition of the time-honored maritime tradition known as a delivery ceremony.

Odyssey will now set the stage for a bold, new way to vacation when it debuts from first-time homeport Haifa, Israel in May 2021 and Fort Lauderdale, Florida in November.

COMMENTARY: Trying to rewrite the January 6th coup attempt

There is something amazing going on in Republican Party circles. If I did not know better, I would assume that I was watching a television comedy. Segments of the Republican Party are attempting to tell us that the January 6th coup attempt did not actually happen. Instead, they argue, what we SAW on television was allegedly orchestrated by Antifa and the Black Lives Matter movement.

There are certain noteworthy things about this argument, the most important being that it is not based on any facts. None. The second is that this line of argument started as

soon as the coup attempt had ended.

Right-wingers claimed that it was a so-called false flag operation that was conducted by the political Left in order to delegitimize the political Right.

There are many problems with this line of thinking, not the least being that many of the alleged perpetrators of the 1/6 coup attempt were avowed right-wingers who conducted this operation in the full view of video.

So, what is going on? Simply put, the pro-fascist elements in the Republican Party are attempting to convince a critical mass of the public that what they saw…they did not really see. This is not even equivalent

to a magician’s trick with the sleight of hand. They are going one step further and asserting that what all of us saw on television or the web, for which many people have been arrested and charged, did not happen or, if it did, it was really conducted by the political Left.

It is important to note that both Antifa and the Black Lives Matter movement are networks, at best.

There is no one organization called “Antifa,” for instance, and there are many organizations that operate under the banner of Black Lives Matter.

Therefore, the right-wing assertions of an Antifa and BLM conspiracy would not make sense in the best of all possible worlds. But more imporwww.citizennewspapergroup.com

tantly, there is no evidence to back up such assertions!

The pro-fascist element within the Republican Party is attempting several things at the same time.

First, to lay the basis for further repression of anti-fascist and anti-racist forces. This is part of the motivation behind an increase in anti-terrorism legislation in various states when the government already has the authority to prosecute terrorists.

Second, the pro-fascist element in the Republican Party is trying to obscure both the reality of January 6th but also the antics of Trump. They are simply trying to deny that there was a coup attempt where people

were injured and/or lost their lives.

There is a famous term for what the pro-fascist element is doing. It comes from an iconic film. The term is “gas lighting,” i.e., to lead people to believe that what they are actually experiencing or seeing is not really happening.

We cannot afford to ignore this.

Precisely for these reasons, the fascists and their collaborators need to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, thereby demonstrating the danger that they pose to any democratic political system. This is no comedy.

The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) recently announced the creation of an expansive content creation, talent development and partnership platform that enables and advocates for increased inclusion of Black creators across the advertising, film and television industries. Titled “Widen The Screen,” it will include new films and initiatives that feature more diverse storytellers, combat bias against all people fueled by misrepresentation, increase investment in Black-owned and operated media and employ more diverse creators in a way that improves their trajectory for long-term success.

The anthem film “Widen The Screen” premiered during the 2021 NAACP Image Awards on Saturday, March 27 with a call to action to portray a more holistic view of Black life – one that is layered, beautiful and dynamic – not one that simply reinforces commonly told stereotypes.

The film, created and produced by a team of largely Black creators in collaboration with Grey, and narrated by Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali, ends with the line “Let’s widen the screen to widen our view” and challenges the expectations viewers have about the characters and stories often played

by Black actors – fueled by a limited view of Black Life on screen.

The film and associated community programs are intended to show young Black men that they can follow and achieve their dreams outside of sports, which aligns with UNINTERRUPTED’s “More Than An Athlete” mantra.

P&G’s partner for “The Look,” SATURDAY MORNING is a creative agency that brings awareness to and shifts perceptions on racial bias and injustice. With SATURDAY MORNING, Tribeca and dozens of black creatives, P&G is creating scripted stories told in 8 minutes and 46 seconds to tell life-affirming stories of joy, love, and resilience.

P&G also announced support for efforts to increase the number of Black creators entering the industry through programs like the Marcus Graham Project and the One Club for Creativity’s One School Initiative; continued support of critical talent development initiatives like ADCOLOR; and increasing investment in a broad range of Black owned and operated companies and media platforms.

Widen The Screen also includes important collaborations with a variety of majority-owned advertising agencies and partners, as they too strengthen their efforts to ensure increased representation and inclusion.

“True inclusion leads to greater creativity and innovation, provides access to opportunity, and leads to equity in income and wealth creation.

Our hope is that we will create a ripple effect and the rest of the industry will follow suit,” Pritchard added.

Tips to Keep Kids’ Rooms Clean and Organized

(StatePoint) For the past year, many of us have lived, played, worked and gone to school right at home, making clutter inevitable – especially when it comes to kids’ bedrooms and playrooms.

No matter how many times parents tell their children to clean their rooms, the collection of clothes, schoolwork and toys seems to build endlessly. Take charge of the mess with these tips to create a space that’s fun and functional for kids of all ages.

1. Prioritize Belongings. Start by considering what needs to go, what can stay and how much storage space you have available. Make it a family project by working with your kids to identify which items they love most and which things they could do without. Once you know what will be kept, prioritize space accordingly, keeping beloved items easily accessible.

2. Organize the Stuff. Find everything a home. Bins and baskets are ideal for small toys and games with tiny pieces, while drawers and shelves are perfect for larger items. For excess items, especially young children’s toys, use clear bins to store them in closets or under beds. Not only does this help tidy the room, but it can also make old things appear new again when they are pulled out of storage.

3. Create Labels. Getting belongings organized is one thing, but keeping them that way is another. A great way to ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste is to label the bins or baskets. Labels make things easy to find when you need them and keep items organized when cleaning up.
