WOMAN PROVIDES ‘THE ANSWER’ FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES

Debra Vines founded The Answer in 2007 after seeing a need for help with people that had Autism and Developmental Differences. Vines saw firsthand how challenging it was to find resources because of her son. The Answer started with a support group, with the goal to bring families together, and to see what those families needed, to be whole.

The report highlights voices of key lawmakers, survivors, advocates, and researchers working to end the public health crisis of gun violence.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) released The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America. Congresswoman Robin Kelly pioneered this report as a one-of-a-kind Congressional analysis of the nation’s gun violence epidemic and a blueprint for ending the crisis.

The Kelly Report: A Vision for a Safer America brings together Members of Congress, survivors, academics, and gun reform advocates to examine the root causes and impacts of gun violence in America and provides a comprehensive set of legislative and policy recommendations to stop it. Contributors to the report include Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-07), CBC Chair Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-04), Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chair Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-04), Congressman Maxwell Frost (FL-10), President of Brady United Kris Brown, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Chairwoman of the Newtown Action Alliance Po Murray, President of the Community Justice Action Foundation Amber Goodwin, and many more.

Ten years ago, Rep. Kelly released the first version of this report after winning her seat in Congress on a platform of gun violence prevention. Rep. Kelly made headlines during her first full term for refusing to stand during moments of silence, demanding action instead of empty gestures. In the aftermath of the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016, Rep. Kelly joined Congressman John Lewis to lead a 26 hour sit in on the House floor demanding action on gun violence. Rep. Kelly has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to combat the gun violence epidemic.

“I came to Washington because I couldn’t stand to watch Congress do nothing while children were ripped away from their families day after day. I published the first Kelly Report in 2014 to address gun violence as the public health crisis it truly is and offer solutions that matched the scale of the epidemic,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly. “Unfortunately, 10 years later, tens of thousands of lives are still lost to gun violence every year. There is still so much work to be done, and the 2024 Kelly Report charts a path forward for meaningful change. I am proud to bring together survivors, advocates, policy makers and research to say in one voice – enough is enough.”

AMMONS ENCOURAGES LOCAL STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR ILLINOIS LEGISLATIVE BLACK CAUCUS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is encouraging African American high school seniors and undergraduate students to apply for one of this year’s Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation (ILBCF) scholarships online by May 31.

“We’re approaching that time of year where students nationwide are finding out what college they’ve gained acceptance to for this upcoming fall semester,” said Ammons. “The Caucus is committed to supporting African American students in continuing their education by providing the financial relief necessary for many families to explore these opportunities. I highly recommend local students take the time to apply for this scholarship.”

The ILBCF anticipates over $100,000 in scholarships will be awarded this year to help African American high school seniors and undergraduate students continue their education at a two- or fouryear institution this fall. Since 2002, the ILBCF has given over $1.5 million in scholarships to students. Interested applicants can learn more information and access the online scholarship form from now until May 31 at https://ilbcf.org/scholarships/.

Woman Provides ‘The Answer’ For Parents Of Children With Autism And Developmental Differences

Several programs were created from that support group. They include Spectrum University, a tutoring and workforce development program for children and adults with Autism and Developmental Disabilities; Spectrum Socialite, a program that teaches young ladies about sexual education; First Responders Training, which teaches first responders how to interact with people with Autism and Developmental Differences; Bullying Is Not the Answer, an antibullying program; and Just for Men, a group for fathers and men who are caregivers to help them grow. The Answer serves people between the ages of 6 years old to 40 years old.

In March, The Answer hosted its 3rd Annual Autism & Developmental Difference Expo. There were more than 300 people in attendance. In addition to more than 60 exhibitors, there was a panel discussion that included Actress and Founder of the Holly-Rod Foundation, Holly Robinson Peete; Vanessa Schmidt, Assistant Executive Director for Proviso Area for Exceptional Children; Natashee Scott, Assistant Deputy Mayor of Community Safety; Necole Mills, MA Disability Non-Profit Leader; and Vines. The discussion was moderated by Illinois Senate Leader Kimberly Lightford. There was an opportunity for parents to get their children screened by speech therapists for Autism.

Vines said she received a lot of positive feedback from the Expo event. She added the parents left feeling empow-

ered by the resources and the panel discussion.

“The families left with a great amount of resources. When my son Jason was diagnosed in 1988, Expos and having resources right in the community were not there for us. The families left very very empowered. They left hopeful with the resources they received and they were able to network with other families,” she said.

Next up for The Answer is the 17th Annual Autism Walk, which will take place April 27th at Proviso West High School. The walk was started to raise money for children and adults to go to a horseback riding camp for a week. It was expanded to include a scholarship for diverse learners. More than 600 students have been sponsored throughout the last 17 years.

The walk is another opportunity for families to connect with other families love ones with Autism and Developmental Differences. The day includes face painting, a photo booth, as well as live entertainment.

The Answer also advocates for people with Autism and Developmental Differences, which includes Individualized Education Plan Support. The organization has acted as a resource to ensure students’ needs are being met educationally. In 2020, Vines and the Answer advocated to ensure people with disabilities were counted in the Census.

The Treasurer’s Office is accepting electronic submissions for the Cream of the Crop Photo Contest at www.CreamoftheCropContest.com. Top photographs will be chosen in three age-based categories: ages 8 10, 11 14 and 15-18. Each student may submit up to two photos by June 14.

As State Treasurer, Michael Frerichs (FRAIR’iks) is the state’s Chief Investment and Banking Officer and actively manages approximately $55 billion. The investments help families pay for college and trade school; workers save for a dignified retirement; and local governments process bill payments more efficiently so they can pass along the savings to taxpayers. Race, Ethnicity and Dementia Caregiving

In the intricate tapestry of caregiving, where love intertwines with sacrifice, disparities carve their presence into the fabric of each caregiver’s journey. It’s only in recent times that the spotlight of population-based studies has shifted to illuminate the stark racial contrasts within the realm of dementia caregiving, shedding light on the burdens and obstacles faced by Black and Hispanic caregivers.

Travel and tourism professionals from across the industry judged submissions in nine categories, ranging from best social media marketing campaign to best event or festival, with one exceptional entry receiving best of show. The Illinois Office of Tourism also announced two Illinois Tourism Legacy Awards to longtime Peoria businessman, George Manias with George’s Shoeshine & Hatters and Roger Carmack, President & CEO of Great Rivers Country.

Amidst these revelations lies a sobering truth: nearly half of Black and Hispanic individuals grappling with dementia seek refuge in the care of their adult children, a striking comparison to the one-quarter of White individuals who do the same.

Yet, the burdens endured are far from alleviated. Black caregivers, steadfast in their commitment, often find themselves bearing heavier loads. They dedicate upwards of 40 hours per week to caregiving, a testament to their resilience in the face of adversity. Their role extends beyond mere companionship; they become essential pillars, providing aid with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), assuming roles of nurturer, confidant, and protector.

However, alongside the emotional and physical strains of caregiving, a different burden persists - the weight of financial hardship. Particularly, Black male dementia caregivers find themselves disproportionately impacted, standing 3.3 times more likely to grapple with economic challenges than their counterparts.

Despite the undeniable necessity for respite, Black caregivers are noticeably less inclined to seek such reprieve, underscoring the enduring gap in accessibility to support services. The journey of caregiving, laden with emotional and physical tolls, exacts its toll on mental well-being, with discrimination looming as a dark cloud over the welfare of African American caregivers.

Yet, amidst the trials, glimmers of resilience and fortitude emerge. Black caregivers, more prone than their White counterparts, discover solace in the affirmative aspects of caregiving, fostering bonds that transcend the constraints of illness. Research even suggests they experience marginally higher levels of psychological wellbeing, a testament to the potency of love amidst adversity.

However, the path to caregiving is fraught with hazards. Hispanic, Black, and Asian American caregivers find themselves grappling with heightened care demands, diminished external support, and elevated rates of depression, underscoring the pressing need for culturally attuned support systems.

In the mosaic of caregiving, the ties that bind are often woven from the threads of familial and social support. For Black caregivers, the presence of robust support networks serves as a beacon of hope amid the darkest hours.

Yet, amidst the challenges, there exists a glimmer of hope. Through resilience, solidarity, and unwavering love, caregivers of every shade navigate the labyrinth of dementia, their narratives a testament to the indomitable spirit of humanity in confronting adversity.

Black Owned Fintech Novae, Joins Direct Selling Association

CONYERS, Ga., PRNewswire -- CEO Reco McCambry announced that Novae has been accepted into the Direct Selling Association after a unanimous vote by their Board of Directors. The acceptance is a major step for Novae, which has now appeared on the Inc 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing businesses for three years running.

The DSA was established over 100 years ago to support independent sales professionals, and includes giants in the finance, tech, wellness, energy, and lifestyle spaces. Members range from ubiquitous direct selling companies like ACN, Amway, Avon, Primerica, and Mary Kay to modern brands whose memberships may surprise readers like pawTree, Ambit Energy, Scentsy, and The Pampered Chef.

ucts, and Cobrand and White Label programs in which owners with existing businesses can add Novae products and services to their offerings while Novae and their partners do all the work behind the scenes.

This acceptance also comes on the heels of Novae’s rebranding as Novae: The Credit and Money Company, to reflect the range of services the company has expanded into in recent years.

Novae is unusual among fintech companies in its goal of reducing wealth inequality. Novae’s services are geared toward helping people obtain home and business ownership. This mission is also reflected in Novae’s direct sales business model, in which Novae sales professionals effectively own their own businesses.

Novae offers both an affiliate program in which new sales professionals and entrepreneurs sell Novae prod-

In direct sales models, sales professionals are responsible for making their own product sales through platforms created by the direct sales company, but they also keep most of the profit from those sales for themselves.

It is this business model that the Direct Selling Association was created to support back in 1910. The association offers education, networking opportunities, and professional development to its members; as well as industry research for the marketplace and lobbies for direct sales companies in Washington, D.C. It also has a code of consumer protection ethics to which member organizations are required to adhere.

Novae CEO Reco McCambry himself started working as a direct sales professional as a college student, and soon realized that this business model gave him the potential to develop more wealth and more freedom than the employer-employee model. He subsequently resolved to run his own company after having a tremendous amount of success as an independent direct salesperson in his 20s. His mission was to serve an unmet market need while encouraging his direct sales force to develop their entrepreneurial, business, and life skills.

McCambry believes that Novae’s ethos of focusing on traditionally underserved consumers and entrepreneurs is responsible for the company’s successful growth.

“Novae’s services are designed for people who have

historically been shut out of financial education, lending, and business support,” McCambry said in an interview.

“There is huge hunger in this market. Everybody knows that the people who are paid the least are often the hardest workers. And when major banks often have not provided financial services to these people, there’s huge potential for financial growth that isn’t being tapped by existing business models.”

Novae’s most recent product releases have included new offerings for both businesses and private individuals.

On the business side, Novae has expanded their debt help program to include debt restructuring for businesses, which promise to lower business’s monthly debt payments down to roughly 2% of their total debt, and rolled out a free service to assist individuals in setting up their LLCs. They’ve also added services to assist with applications for trademarks, EINs, business licenses, sales tax permits, and more.

On the personal finance side, Novae has expanded its financial education and legal assistance services to include trust and will estate planning services which use cutting-edge technology to reduce labor costs and pass the savings along to customers. This represents Novae’s latest effort to not only help others build a financial legacy, but to help them protect it and pass it on.

With Novae continuing to expand into new territory in terms of both services offered and market share, CEO McCambry is confident that the company’s membership in the Direct Selling Association will lead to great things.

“This is an organization that has been there for sales professionals and providing industry credibility and integrity since its founding in 1910,” McCambry said. “Novae is proud to now be part of that legacy.”

Chicago – Few spring break destinations allow families to explore both tropical coral reefs and arctic waters in the same day. At Shedd Aquarium, guests come face-to-face with aquatic life from across the globe to tap into their curiosity and compassion, all from the comforts of Chicago.

This year, Shedd offers even more opportunities for families and adults to make the most of spring break with new exhibit features, unique animal sightings, extended aquarium hours and more.

Whether it’s a sea lion or beluga whales, it’s always a surprise who shows up for Shedd’s Animal Spotlights. Now, these presentations have brand-new features that strengthen guests’ connections to these animals and their incredible adaptations. Why are the dolphins at Shedd black and white? What noise do beluga whales make? These answers and more live at Shedd Aquarium.

Guests will uncover unique natural behaviors and anatomy that allows these animals to thrive, potential threats these animals face in their natural environment and how everyone can play a part in protecting our blue planet. Animal Spotlights are free with admission in the Abbott Oceanarium and times vary throughout the day.

Just like the natural world, things are always changing and growing at Shedd, and there are a few new faces around the aquarium. Catch a glimpse of this pup’s energetic and vocal nature as he continues to explore his habitat. Additionally, guests visiting the Rivers gallery can spot

recently-arrived young paddlefish as they continue to grow, swimming along with mouths open wide to filter feed.

As the annual breeding season begins, Shedd’s Magellanic and rockhopper penguins have started building their nests with rocks, sticks and other materials. Guests can come face-to-face with the penguins during this unique time of year, and children can embody the penguin spirit as they waddle and hop around the nearby Polar Play Zone.

ASK QUESTIONS DURING DAILY ANIMAL CHATS

Available throughout the day, guests are encouraged to nurture their curiosity and learn about the animals that call the aquarium home at one, or more, of the daily Animal Chats. These experiences, free with admission, create the chance to hear directly from Shedd experts, ask questions and discover how to protect kelp forests, sharks, penguins and more. Times and locations for these chats are posted daily on Shedd’s website.

NAACP and CBS Studios Venture to Develop New Daytime Drama for the CBS Television Network

(Black PR Wire) LOS ANGELES – The joint venture between CBS Studios and the NAACP is developing a new daytime drama for the CBS Television Network.

The series, titled THE GATES, follows the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community. Michele Val Jean, who has written more than 2,000 episodes of daytime dramas and won multiple Daytime Emmy and WGA Awards for her work on THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL and “General Hospital,” will serve as writer and showrunner. Val Jean will also be an executive producer alongside Sheila Ducksworth, Leon Russell, Derrick Johnson and Kimberly Doebereiner. THE GATES will be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.

“THE GATES will be everything we love about daytime drama, from a new and fresh perspective,” said Sheila Ducksworth, president of the CBS Studios NAACP venture. “This series will salute an audience that has been traditionally underserved, with the potential to be a groundbreaking moment for broadcast television. With multi-dimensional characters, juicy storylines and Black culture front and center, THE

GATES will have impactful representation, one of the key touchstones of the venture.”

Continued Ducksworth, “I’m excited to develop this project with CBS and P&G, two of the longest and most passionate champions of broadcast and daytime television, and the NAACP, whose enduring commitment to Black voices and artists is both powerful and inspiring. I also want to thank CBS’ George Cheeks, NAACP’s Derrick Johnson and P&G’s Marc Pritchard for their

personal involvement and support to take our next step forward with THE GATES.”

The CBS Studios’ production venture and development deal with the NAACP was established to help elevate a diverse range of voices as well as increase the visibility of Black artists on broadcast and streaming platforms in an ever-evolving media landscape.

The NAACP advocates, agitates, and litigates for the civil rights due to Black America. Our legacy is built on the foundation of grassroots activism by the biggest civil rights pioneers of the 20th century and is sustained by 21st century activists. From classrooms and courtrooms to city halls and Congress, our network of members across the country works to secure the social and political power that will end race-based discrimination. That work is rooted in racial equity, civic engagement, and supportive policies and institutions for all marginalized people. We are committed to a world without racism where Black people enjoy equitable opportunities in thriving communities.

NOTE: The Legal Defense Fund – also referred to as the NAACP-LDF - was founded in 1940 as a part of the NAACP, but now operates as a completely separate entity.

ICYMI: Rep. Kelly Presents $850,000 in Federal Funding to Respond Now

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL – On Saturday, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), joined by Cook County Commissioners Donna Miller and Monica Gordon, presented Respond Now with a ceremonial check for $850,000. Respond Now works to alleviate hunger and prevent homelessness for the most at-risk, serving 12,000 clients annually in Chicago’s South Suburbs. Congresswoman Kelly secured this federal funding through the Community Project Funding process in FY2024 appropriations legislation. The $850,000 will go toward Respond Now’s planned Food Pantry Expansion Project, which is designed to give their clients a supermarket experience.

The press conference also marked the 14th anniversary of the signing of the Affordable Care Act, which extended health coverage to tens of millions of Americans. Congresswoman Kelly’s visit highlighted Respond Now’s critical health access work and emphasized the importance of healthy food to overall health.

“Respond Now's efforts to expand their food pantry into a shopping market experience represents a bold step forward to address the root causes of hunger and food insecurity. I’m proud to bring $850,000 in federal funding back to our community to support our neighbors and expand opportunities for families to thrive,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

“The funding being received, thanks to the hard work of Representative Kelly and her office, will be transformative in the way Food Pantry services are delivered for people in the Southland. Respond Now is dedicated to offering services with dignity and respect,” said Carl Wolf, Executive Director of Respond Now. The development of our Food Pantry into a supermarket style model, a development made possible by this funding, will continue to advance our work in this regard. Just as any one of us goes to the supermarket and inspects the labels, picks up the fruit, and compares nutritional values, the people who utilize food pantries should be afforded that same opportunity. It's not only a question of dignity and respect, but a question of empowerment, and allowing people to make choices that best meet their lifestyle needs.”

We are grateful to The House of Goshen for choosing Flossmoor for its new home. We are confident that Goshen group will continue in its tradition of providing specialized care for individuals with serious illnesses who choose not to pursue or continue aggressive treatment to cure or control their condition. The House of Goshen will provide this necessary alternative.” says Illinois" State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin.

Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan adds, “The Southland is appreciative of the House of Goshen for the quality of care that it provides. The primary focus of hospice is to provide comfort, peace, and quality of life for those nearing the end of life. This is exactly the mission in which the good people at the House of Goshen governs itself to.

House of Goshen is a leading hospice care provider dedicated to ensuring that individuals with terminal illnesses receive compassionate, respectful, and highquality care. Through its patient-centered approach, the organization prioritizes symptom management and support for both patients and their families. With the unveiling of the new Hospice House, the House of Goshen reaffirms its commitment to delivering exceptional end-of-life care to the community.

FOODS South Suburban | Week of April 3, 2024 10 C
SOUTH SUBURBAN C

(StatePoint) Perhaps even more nerve-wracking than waiting for your child’s college acceptance letters is learning whether they’ve been awarded financial aid. Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) designed to simplify the process have led to unforeseen hiccups and technical glitches, causing academic institutions to delay sending out financial aid award letters. However, once you finally get the results, it can give your family a better idea of what to do next.

“Our research shows that for a majority of parents, figuring out how to pay for college was the ‘road to college’ activity that caused them the most stress. By making a financial plan and prioritizing it, you can be well prepared to avoid the most common bumps in the road,”

explains Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer, College Ave.

Colatriano recommends using the spring to teach your child these valuable financial skills: how to set up a budget, how to pay bills and how to manage credit. If your family will potentially be borrowing to finance college, students should also gain an understanding of how loans work, and how the different terms of the loan will affect their monthly payments and overall loan cost.

Speaking of budget, you should set a realistic budget for yourself. A recent College Ave survey found that in addition to helping pay for tuition and housing costs, parents also contribute to their child’s phone bill (65%), health insurance (61%), food and groceries (42%), cable and internet bill (35%) and transportation (32%). Be realis-

tic about which expenses you can afford and where you want to ask your child to chip in.

Decode Award Letters Financial aid award letters can look different for each school. Familiarize yourself with their components so that when they arrive, you’ll be ready to decipher them. Here’s what to look for:

1. Free money: The award letter will list whether your student is eligible for scholarships and grants (sometimes called Merit or Gift Aid). This is money you typically don’t need to pay back.

2. Federal Work-Study: Your child might be eligible for Federal Work-Study jobs. While jobs aren’t guaranteed, they can be a good opportunity to help cover educational expenses.

3. Student Loans: Schools will list any federal loans your child is eligible to receive. Helpful hint: They may be grouped with scholarships and grants. You should also note whether the loan is subsidized or unsubsidized. Because unsubsidized loans accrue interest while your student is enrolled and during deferment periods, this will affect the overall loan cost.

4. Other factors: Check if awards being offered are for all four years and understand what your child will need to do to continue being eligible for them, year-to-year.

To get an apples-to-apples look at the offers, calculate the net direct cost of each school by subtracting offered scholarships and grants from the cost of attendance (tuition, room, board, textbooks and fees). If applicable, you can subtract work-study aid too. You should also factor in expected increases in tuition, room, board and other fees.

Fill in the Gaps

If after doing the math, you find you have a financial gap to cover, look into private scholarships.

One easy one to enter on a monthly basis is College Ave’s $1,000 Scholarship Monthly Sweepstakes.

You may also want to consider a private student loan or parent loan. Look for a lender with great rates, flexible repayment terms, and the opportunity to customize the loan to fit your budget. For example, College Ave offers student loan calculators, a pre-qualification tool that offers quick answers without affecting your credit score, and other helpful tools and resources. To learn more, visit CollegeAve.com.

“The important thing is not to panic.

If you filled out the FAFSA, financial aid award letters are on the way. And once you receive them, you and your student can get to the fun part of planning for the future,” says Colatriano.
