Local Skater Artistic Skills Rolled Out The Groundworks For An Anti-Bullying Platform And Clothing Brand

Continued from page 1

Artistic roller skating is a competitive form of roller skating, similar to figure skating on ice. Artistic roller skaters do jumps and spins, and in competition, the higher the jumps and the more intricate the spins, the more points a skater receives.

Sanders training schedule includes practicing five days a week and working with a trainer. He has competed locally in Glenwood, Lynwood and Aurora, and in Ohio and Nebraska for Nationals. He has received more than 120 medals during the span of his competitive career. He is a member of the U.S. Roller Sports Team and the National Youth Amateur Figure Roller Skaters.

In 2023, Sanders performed with Mariah Carey for the Billboard Awards. He traveled to Los Angeles and worked with Debbie Allen on the choreography for the Mariah Carey performance. While he said he was a little nervous to perform with Mariah Carey, he was also very excited.

In addition to artistic skating, Sanders also has an anti-bullying platform called Stay Focused, Stay Balanced. The goal of the platform is to bring awareness to issues young people face with bullying and cyber bullying. The platform also offers solutions for young people

someone who had been bullied online and it touched him deeply enough that he wanted to do something about it.

Sanders chose the name Stay Focused, Stay Balanced because of a saying that he stays focused on his goals and he stays balanced on his skates. It is also the name of his clothing brand. He has partnered with Special Olympics to ensure young people don’t have to continually deal with bullying. Sanders is studying criminal justice at Richard M. Daley Community College. He chose criminal justice because he took a forensic class in high school, and he was really interested in it.

His favorite move is called the travelling camel. In it, the skater does a series of spins down to the floor. He said it is his favorite move because it is different, and he likes how gravity holds up his body while he is spinning fast.

to implement to decrease bullying instances. He visits schools across the region to speak with students about anti-bullying. He said he chose it as his platform because he would see people on social media being bullied, and he knew

GIANNOULIAS MAKES 130+ LANGUAGES AVAILABLE ON SECRETARY OF STATE WEBSITE

Language Translations Make Programs & Services More Accessible

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is now offering over 130 languages on the office’s website to help ensure that Illinoisans whose primary language is not English can access critical information and resources in their preferred language.

“Language should never serve as a barrier to attaining equal access to essential government services,” Giannoulias said. “Since Day One, I’ve been focused on modernizing the office and by utilizing technology, we’ve made our website fully available to those who understand one of more than 130 of the world’s languages.”

Users can choose any available language to perform any task offered on the website, including renewing a driver’s license or obtaining a vehicle sticker.

Powered by Google Translate, the website enhancements are one part of Giannoulias’ multipronged approach to modernizing the office and will ensure accessibility to the increased number of services offered under Giannoulias’ Skip-the-Line and Do-it-Online programs.

Beginning in September of last year, the office’s Skip-the-Line program launched appointment scheduling to shorten lines and wait times at the state’s busiest DMVs and implemented “Senior-Only” walk-in facilities for older Illinoisans who may encounter difficulty while attempting to schedule an appointment. The Do-it-Online program built on the success of the Skip-the-Line program, making more services readily accessible online.

Rich Township, Ill. – Rich Township High School proudly announces the continued expansion and success of its Culinary Arts Program, distinguished by the introduction of a cutting-edge $1.4 million culinary kitchen in 2020, the launch of the Graystone Cafe, and the recent acquisition of a custom food truck designed to enrich student education in the culinary and business sectors of the food industry.

In 2020, the school unveiled its modern culinary kitchen, a state-of-theart facility equipped with top-tier professional appliances including an oven, grill top, griddle, bakery oven, steam tables, refrigeration units, and extensive prep space. The kitchen also features a new walk-in cooler and freezer, alongside a dedicated storage room, providing

students with a professional environment to hone their culinary skills.

Following the kitchen’s inauguration, the school established the Graystone Cafe, a unique space within the school that serves students and staff for special occasions. This initiative not only showcases the students’ culinary talents but also enhances the school community’s dining experience.

In a move to expand the program’s reach and provide comprehensive learning opportunities, the district acquired a food truck in 2022. This addition allows students to gain hands-on experience in the business side of the culinary arts, from food preparation and service to managing operations and understanding the dynamics of mobile food service.

Dr. Johnnie Thomas, Superintendent of Rich Township High School District, states, “The expansion of our Culinary Arts Program reflects our commitment to providing students with innovative and practical learning opportunities. By investing in state-ofthe-art facilities and bringing in experts like Mr. Dangerfield, we are preparing our students for successful careers in the culinary field.”

2024 Illinois Secretary of State’s Vehicle Show Set for September 7

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is highlighting the 60th Anniversary of the iconic 1964 Ford Mustang at its annual Vehicle Show in Springfield, Secretary Alexi Giannoulias announced.

Giannoulias made the announcement while revealing the Vehicle Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, in downtown Springfield.

A limited number of commemorative license plates featuring the Mustang and promoting the Vehicle Show are now available for $32 per pair until May 10.

Illinois vehicle owners who purchase the plates may display them on their vehicles for up to 60 days before the show from July 10 to September 7, 2024.

“The Vehicle Show brings together car enthusiasts and families from across the Midwest to downtown Springfield,” Giannoulias said. “A broad collection of classic vehicles featuring all makes and models will be on display this year. We look forward to hosting the event that will help draw visitors to Springfield and provide a boost to local businesses.”

“The Illinois Secretary of State’s Classic Vehicle Show is an exciting event that provides a unique experience to visitors and local residents alike,” said Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher. “This iconic car show has left an

indelible mark on automotive history, embodying the spirit of ingenuity and craftsmanship. This event also provides us with the opportunity to showcase Springfield’s finest businesses, restaurants and historic downtown.”

The event will honor one vehicle with the Illinois State Champion Award, given to the vehicle judged best by the show’s advisory committee. First-, second- and third-place winners will also receive awards in at least 60 classes.

Ford began manufacturing the Mustang in March 1964, creating a new class of automobiles known as pony cars. The Mustang’s styling proved wildly popular and inspired other manufacturers to copy its look.

First held in 1949 as an Antique Auto Meet, the Secretary of State’s Vehicle Show features some of Illinois’ finest antique and classic vehicles, sports cars, motorcycles, trucks and tractors.

Last year’s event brought more than 1,000 visitors to downtown Springfield with more than 600 Illinois drivers purchasing specialty plates.

For more information or for a brochure, including a Vehicle Show Registration Form, please call 312-793-8876 or email vehicleshow@ilsos.gov.

This year’s report, reveals that dementia caregivers report difficulties in navigating dementia care within the U.S. health care system. Caregivers also report the stresses of caregiving. The new report estimates that nearly 7 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, with the cost of care for these individuals this year projected to reach $360 billion — a $15 billion increase from a year ago. This does not include unpaid care provided by family caregivers and friends. Last year in Illinois there were 311,000 dementia family caregivers, providing 480,000,000 hours of unpaid care valued at $9,840,000,000.

Facts and Figures provides scientists, journalists and policy makers an in-depth look at the latest national and state-by-state statistics on Alzheimer’s disease prevalence, mortality, caregiving, dementia care workforce and costs of care. This report is one of the many reasons the Association is seen as the trusted leader in the fight to end Alzheimer’s and all other dementia. Facts and Figures provides evidence-based data to support our priorities on behalf of people living with dementia.

We surveyed dementia caregivers and health care workers to develop this year’s special report: Mapping a Better Future for Dementia Care Navigation. The report provides a look into dementia care navigation, which is defined as support to people living with dementia and their caregivers to overcome barriers that impact care and health outcomes.

The new report estimates that 6.9 million people age 65 and older in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s dementia, including 250,600 in Illinois.

• In 2023, 11.5 million family and other caregivers of people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias provided an estimated 18.4 billion hours of unpaid help. That averages out to nearly 31 hours of care per caregiver per week.

• Caregivers are stressed. Coordinating care is stressful. Navigating health care is difficult, as is finding resources and support caregivers need.

• Dementia caregivers would find navigation services helpful. Caregivers identified services they need: a 24/7 helpline, help coordinating care and communication between different specialists and help in understanding their care recipient’s condition.

• The majority of health care workers surveyed (60%) believe that the U.S. health care system is not effectively helping patients and their families navigate dementia care.

This report affirms the importance of the work the Alzheimer’s Association is doing across the country to ensure people get access to dementia care support services — in addition to access to treatments.

Los Bulls Celebrate the Latiné Community

The Bulls celebrate Latiné fans from across Chicago and beyond and help tell their impactful stories. Through their commitment to celebrating and empowering Latiné fans and the intersection of art, culture and community, the Bulls have partnered with several local artists and community programs throughout the season to design art across Chicago that honors Latiné culture.

“This season, the Bulls partnered with four Latiné artists on creative projects including three murals and one basketball court. Murals and public art quickly become part of the fabric of a community, which is why we continue to lend our time and resources to facilitate creative expression, particularly for local youth, and to reflect the rich heritage of Chicago’s Latiné community,” said Adrienne Scherenzel, vice president of community engagement at the Chicago Bulls. “We look forward to continuing our celebration of the Latiné community with our Los Bulls theme night and Watch Party.”

Celebrating Culture and Community Through Art

Throughout the 2023-24 season, the Bulls have installed four pieces of large-scale public art in partnership with Latiné artists.

Mural with Yolllicalli Arts Program and Mario Mena in Pilsen

Mural with Yolllicalli Arts Program and Mario Mena in Pilsen: Designed and painted by students of the Yollocalli Arts Program, the Bulls celebrated the completion of a mural. Working with Yollocalli’s summer Street Art program of 15 students, the Bulls prompted the youth to design a mural that represents both Bulls and Latiné Culture. The students created a design that spans three sides of a house in Pilsen across from the National Museum of Mexican Art. The mural serves as the first stop in museum-led mural tours and depicts Bulls as powerful spirit guides, seamlessly merging the realms of the living and the

afterlife.

Basketball Court at the Miracle Center by Liz Flores in Belmont Cragin

Basketball Court at the Miracle Center by Liz Flores in Belmont Cragin: The Bulls and The Miracle Center (TMC), a female- and Latiné-owned and operated community center that empowers youth through the expression of art and performance, partnered with Latiné painter and muralist Liz Flores, Connors Sports and All-Star Press to unveil a new basketball court on the Northwest side of Chicago in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood. Flores designed TMC’s court with art that is culturally reflective of the center and Bulls Latiné communities.

Mural at Infinity High School by Sentrock and Students:

Mural at Infinity High School by Sentrock and Students: For the third year of the program and second year in partnership with United Airlines, the Bulls partnered with Infinity High School art students to develop a mural for their school painted by local Latiné artist Sentrock. Sentrock and students spent several weeks together collaborating on art that reflects the student’s community, creativity and culture.

SEE RED Mural by Fez in Pilsen: The Chicago Bulls unveiled three new murals that showcase different elements of the Bulls brand in Pilsen, West Loop and West Town ahead of the 2023-24 season. Each mural was hand-painted and designed by a local muralist to showcase different elements of the Bulls brand. The Pilsen mural created by Fedz was inspired by the raw emotion and support of the Chicago Bulls fanbase. Fedz believes that his mural will connect with the people of Chicago because as he shared, “The Chicago Bulls have always been a staple in the community with an extraordinarily diverse fanbase, which I feel are represented within the piece. From children to men and women, we all carry that Bulls

spirit inside.”

SEE RED Watch Party: Los Bulls Presented by Michelob ULTRA

As part of the new Bulls Bar Network Watch Party Series, the Bulls and Michelob ULTRA hosted a Los Bulls-themed watch party at Green Room Tap located in Pilsen when the Bulls played the Los Angeles Clippers on March 9. Fans were able to celebrate the Latiné community, received a custom Los Bulls x ULTRA long-sleeve, cheer on the Bulls and had the chance to win Bulls tickets and swag.

Los Bulls Theme Night Presented by United Airlines

Presented by United Airlines, Los Bulls theme night tipped off in the atrium with a pregame concert at 4 p.m. presented by Michelob ULTRA that will feature performances from Ballet Folkorico de Chicago, a concert with two local Latiné DJs (DJ Ragol and DJ Enigma) and local Latiné vendors offering fans a paleta cart, fruit stand, paper picado and churros.

The night continued with Chicago-based violinist Brenden Perez, accompanied by Mario Hernandez and Sebastian Oseguera, performing the National Anthem followed by a halftime performance by Ballet Folkorico de Chicago. A nod to the Latiné community, the team will wear league-provided “noches ene be a” warm-ups.

For the second season, the Bulls will showcase art throughout the arena that was developed in partnership with Bulls Design Advisor, Don C and Infinity High School students as part of a year-round STEAM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program, curated in collaboration with United Airlines. The artwork was represented on the Item of Game for March 11. Fans can purchase the Item of the Game – a 1966 x Los Bulls t-shirt –at the United Center in the Madhouse Team Store and online at shop. bulls.com.

(StatePoint) As you file your taxes, you may be wondering how a successful tax plan can help you reach your financial goals, whether you’re filing taxes for the first time as a young professional or approaching retirement.

During tax time, put this aspect of your financial plan on the front burner by working with a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. Here are three ways a CFP® professional can help you make the most of tax deductions, tax credits and tax-advantaged accounts:

deferrals to defined contribution plans such as 401(k)s and 403(b)s have risen considerably. A CFP® professional can help you determine how much you can comfortably contribute each month to shelter more of your wealth from taxes. This move has an additional benefit if you’re close to the edge of a higher tax bracket — by trimming taxable income, you can fall into a lower bracket and save. And, of course, by boosting deferrals, you will be setting yourself up for a more comfortable retirement.

3. Become a strategic giver: As you file your taxes each year, you may have noticed that there’s a high bar for claiming deductions for charitable donations. In fact, for 2023, that standard deduction is $13,850 for single filers and $27,700 for married couples filing together. To make more of your charitable dollars, a CFP® professional can help you establish a donor-advised fund. This allows you to “bunch” your donations and qualify for deductions immediately. This tax-advantageous method of giving is good for you, and good for your end recipients, as it allows your contributions to potentially grow while you decide which charities to support.

CFP® professionals know the latest tax code changes that average investors often do not. To find a CFP® professional committed to acting in your best

1. Avoid surprises: A tax refund may feel like a boon, but it means that you gave the government an interest-free loan. However, you don’t necessarily want to swing too far in the other direction and end up with an unmanageable tax bill. A CFP® professional can help you adjust your tax estimates or withholdings, so you are more likely to break even next year-end. And if you do end up with a refund, they can help you redirect the money in a way that’s beneficial to your overall financial plan.

2. Plan for the future: The maximum employee
