NEWS briefly EDUCATION NEW ‘TEST-BLIND’ POLICY IS FIRST OF ITS KIND FOR AN ILLINOIS INSTITUTION Northern Illinois University recently announced it will eliminate the use of standardized test scores for general admission and merit scholarship decisions. This new “test-blind” policy will begin for students applying to NIU for the fall of 2021.

Any high school graduate who applies to NIU with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above will be guaranteed admission.

All freshman applicants will be automatically considered for NIU Merit Scholarships, based on their GPA. The sweeping change includes the University Honors Program, with students applying to that program for the fall of 2021 no longer required to submit standardized test scores.

National higher education studies and NIU’s own data show a student’s high school GPA is a better indicator of future academic success than performance on a standardized ACT or SAT test. Research shows that the costs and inaccessibility of test preparation resources and courses often inhibit minority and low-income students, as well as students with disabilities.​

ACADEMY ENCOURAGES CONSUMERS TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NEW NUTRITION FACTS LABEL The updated Nutrition Facts Label can help the public make more informed decisions about their food and beverage choices. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, understanding the label can make you a wiser shopper and help you eat right.

“Nutrition Facts Labels help you find out which foods are good sources of particular nutrients such as vitamin D or dietary fiber,” says Registered Dietician Nutritionist Lauri Wright, a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Jacksonville, Fla. “Nutrition Facts Labels can help you compare similar foods so you can select those lower in salt, saturated fat, trans fat and added sugars.”

Many manufacturers already have started to use the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s updated Nutrition Facts Label, which was announced in 2016. The new label must appear on all food items by January 1, 2021. The updates are based on the latest information about nutrition and the links between what people eat and chronic diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. The new label reflects the most significant changes since its inception in 1993.

Chicago Heights Community Health Clinic continues mission Continued from page 1

Aunt Martha’s Health and Wellness believes in integrated health and is continuing the mission it started 17 years ago at the Chicago Heights Community Health Clinic, located on 1536 Vincennes Ave. Aunt Martha’s acquired the site after St. James Hospital approached them about taking it over. Aunt Martha’s President and CEO Raul Garza said the payer exchange moved from being largely commercial insurance to Medicaid.

“I just don’t think they saw themselves being able to sustain a clinic for the Medicaid population. So, we had become a federally qualified health center just a few years before that and they had approached us about our interest in taking it over. So, we took the practice over and we bought the space,” he said.

Originally, Aunt Martha’s was occupying two buildings on Joe Orr Road in Chicago Heights. One was used as offices, the other was a clinic.

“We were doing family planning services out of it and then eventually, when we became a federally qualified health center, we started doing women’s health out of that building,” he said. “We were seeing a lot of activity out of that clinic on Joe Orr and Dixie Highway. And, we just felt like there was more need for services.”

Garza said it just made sense to open a clinic there.

“Plus, there were already a good number of patients who were Medicaid

eligible patients already going to that clinic, so we didn’t want to disrupt their care at that site,” he said.

Aunt Martha’s also wanted to expand on what they were doing at the clinic on Joe Orr Road which allowed them to dedicate the Chicago Heights clinic, “as more of a family clinic, adult clinic,” Garza said.

The Chicago Heights Community Health Clinic provides primary care, adult psychiatric care and therapy, as well as family planning. It serves a little less than 6,000 -- 5,800 patients annually – and provides 16,000 visits a year. Garza said it is a very busy clinic.

“We’re getting patients from a lot of different communities, not just Chicago Heights. South Chicago Heights, Ford Heights, Sauk Village Glenwood, Homewood, even Matteson,” he said. “We’re really pulling from a lot of different communities.”

Garza said if he had to guess, the clinic has served roughly 100,000 patients during its history, with about more than 250,000 million visits during the 17 to 18-year period.

He added the clinic, much like all the services Aunt Martha’s provides, takes an integrated approach.

“We really do a holistic evaluation to see if there are other needs we can treat or refer the patient for treatment, so that we’re not just providing episodic care,” Garza said.

According to Garza, an integrated approach allows healthcare providers to take everything going on with a patient

into consideration. It also allows them to figure out what is a good treatment plan, so the patient can get healthier.

“We certainly want to identify everything that could be going on with a patient and how to get that patient to the right provider. A lot of that can happen with community partners,” he said.

Some of those community partners include Franciscan Health, School District 170, Bloom High School District 206, Bloom Township, Chicago Heights Park District, Chicago Heights Public Library, Jones Memorial Community Center, Prairie State College and Illinois Action for Children.

Garza added almost a quarter of the patients Aunt Martha’s sees are uninsured. These people might have jobs, but don’t qualify for health insurance or Medicaid. The Chicago Heights Community Health Center provides services on a sliding scale for them, based on their income and what they can afford. He said it lines up with the Affordable Care Act. “I think the Affordable Care Act is meant to give access of many services to people, it’s also meant to provide care in a value-based way so we can illustrate that patients are getting healthier in our care,” he said. “We feel like we not just line up with the principles and goals of the Affordable Care Act, but we also embrace it and we believe in it.”

Next Step Announced in Sale of Former Howe Development and Tinley Park Mental Health Centers Governor JB Pritzker and Senator Michael E. Hastings recently announced an important step forward in the future sale of the former Howe Development Center and Tinley Park Mental Health Center property.

The State of Illinois will secure the third and final appraisal needed by law to offer the vacant, surplus property for sale.

The State of Illinois has been working with local stakeholders to sell this property for nearly seven years.

The State will now move forward to finalize this important step to determine the appropriate fair market value to responsibly manage this portfolio and give new life to this property.

“After delays spanning

several administrations, I’m glad that we are moving forward today to give new life to this property and bring much-needed economic development to the area,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Tinley Park has a bright future, and we’re proud to partner with local stakeholders to revitalize communities across the state.”

According to the State Property Control Act [35 ILCS 605], the State can convey surplus properties to a local body of government who uses the property.

Conveyances below market value are not currently allowed by law; therefore, the Department of Central Management Services (CMS) cannot evaluate variables like maintenance cost and other aspects of risk mitigation as

the basis for establishing an appropriate price at market.

“The governor, local officials, and I all agree that economic development for our communities should be our top priority,” said Sen. Michael Hastings. “That’s why I found a partner in the Pritzker administration as I worked with the Village of Tinley Park to jump-start this important effort. The Village of Tinley Park should control their own destiny when it comes to the economic development of the property.”

The State of Illinois, through CMS, owns and manages the former Howe Development Center and Tinley Park Mental Health Center property. Howe was closed in July of 2010, and Tinley was closed in July of

2012. The properties were deemed of no future use to the State and declared surplus in December 2012.

CMS continues to secure the property while evaluating options for the sale of the property and placed a lock-down on the property in early November 2019 as a precautionary measure.

CMS staff or CMS-approved visitors are only allowed on the property with personal protective equipment (PPE).

In addition, CMS is working closely with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) to assess the conditions on site and properly address any findings.

An inspection by IEPA in December 2019, did not identify any immediate threats to off-site properties.

Map Tracks Coronavirus Outbreak In Near Real Time The Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering has built and is regularly updating an online dashboard for tracking the worldwide spread of the coronavirus outbreak that began in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

Lauren Gardner, a civil engineering professor and CSSE’s co-director, spearheaded the effort to launch the mapping website.

The site displays statistics about deaths and confirmed cases of coronavirus, or 2019-nCoV, across a worldwide map.

It also allows visitors to download the data for free. “We built this dashboard because we think it is important for the public to have an understanding of the outbreak situation as it unfolds with transparent data sources,” Gardner said. “For the research community, this data will become more valuable as we continue to collect it over time.”

social networking site for health care professionals that provides real-time information on cases.

Gardner said “local level case data” from Dingxiangyuan, media reports,

and the local CDC “can provide more timely assessments of the outbreak, compared to the national level reporting organizations, which take longer to filter up.”

Media outlets including Newsweek, PBS News Hour, and ABC News have cited the dashboard in their reporting about the outbreak.

The website provides a link to a downloadable Google Sheet that contains information on confirmed and suspected cases in more than 30 Chinese locations as well as for the nations of Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Colombia, Brazil, Australia, Mexico, and the United States.

The CSSE website does not yet predict where the flu-like virus is likely to spread.

Last year Gardner and a team of researchers identified 25 U.S. counties that were most likely to experience measles outbreaks in 2019.

The predictive analysis, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, was based on international air travel volume, non-medical exemptions from childhood vaccinations, population data, and reported measles outbreak information.

The Empire Has No Clothes

If your childhood memories are of the United States during the 1950s, you probably remember Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” In this Danish short story, a vain emperor is tricked into purchasing an invisible set of fine clothing that can be seen only by the virtuous. So impressed was the emperor with what he believed to be his new clothes, he donned them and paraded through the streets naked.

If you are a child of the ‘50s, you also grew up on a diet of Walt Disney’s Davy Crockett, John Wayne’s Western heroes and Joe McCarthy’s anti-communist rants.

This was the time when the United States went from being “One nation with liberty and justice for all” to “One nation ‘UNDER GOD’ with liberty and justice for all,” when Congress changed the wording of the Pledge of Allegiance to distinguish ourselves from the “godless” Russians.

It was a time when little boys were encouraged to cheer as loudly for

cowboys that slaughtered Indians as they did for Tarzan as he vanquished African savages.

By the time the “50s rolled around, America had defeated the Nazis, laid low imperial Japan and could do no wrong.

It was also a time when little girls were encouraged to prepare to marry the sons of these conquering heroes and do little else.

Children of color stood on the sidelines watching this parade of American glory go marching by while being forced to swallow our

daily dose of humiliation. We knew that taxes were taken from our parents’ hard-earned wages to build municipal swimming pools that we were forbidden to enjoy. We also watched our parents pay taxes to build grand public schools that we were not allowed to enter.

We knew that if you were Black, Latinx, Asian or from the First Nations, America wanted to crush you.

White kids didn’t have to walk in our shoes, so most did not know how crippling it was to be hobbled by bigotry and racial hatred. Many believed that our inability to walk as they did was our fault, and dispositive proof of our laziness, stupidity and low morals.

In the years since America’s “greatest generation” strutted home from World War II, the people of this nation have been fed a steady diet of lies telling us that the United States is clothed in “equal justice,” the “rule of law” and “American exceptionalism.”

These lies became the norm because anyone who questioned them was accused of being unpatriotic, ungrateful or a communist. www.citizennewspapergroup.com

White America did not bother to turn off their TVs, open their blinds and look out the windows of their split-level homes to see that beyond the boundaries of their segregated planned communities, people of color were being gunned down in the streets in the name of law enforcement. They did not see that the harsh drug laws landing darker youths in prisons were being bent or ignored when it came to their children. And they rolled their eyes at the news of corrupt politicians overseas, while ignoring the fact that American businesses and American foreign policies were doing the corrupting.

It’s been a grand American parade these past several decades, full of loud noise, strutting heroes, shiny objects and a display of wealth.

America proclaims it has become a global empire – something to admire and make your heart beat faster.

But America is not clothed in its imagined virtues at all. Like the naked emperor America has been conned into buying a lie, wrapped in the protection of fear. In Hans Christian Andersen’s story, no one

dared point out that the emperor wore no clothes for fear of being accused of lacking virtue. Few Americans dare to point out our country’s failings for fear of being branded unpatriotic – and we need look no further than former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick to see the reality of this danger.

This country is as vile, corrupt and disgusting as Donald Trump.

We are a nation full of bigots ruled by bigots – a country of greedy grasping materialists who would destroy the very planet on which we live for the sake of a few more shiny things. And we abuse and kill our fellow humans for these same reasons.

The world sees America for what it is – a naked Donald Trump strutting down Main Street to the beat of victorious music playing only in his head. And if we do not bring an end to this vile parade, we will deserve the condemnation that we receive.

U.S. Department of Labor Offers Guidance For Preparing Workplaces for Coronavirus The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently published “Guidance on Preparing Workplaces for COVID-19” to help companies respond in the event of coronavirus in the workplace. The guidance was developed in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).

The document provides practical guidance for preventing the spread of COVID-19, also known as novel coronavirus, and contains information on safe work practices and appropriate personal protective equipment based on the risk level of exposure.

“Protecting the health and safety of America’s workforce is a key component of this Administration’s comprehensive approach to combating the coronavirus,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Loren Sweatt. “This guidance outlines practical ways that employers and workers can address potential health risks from the coronavirus in their workplaces.”

This guidance is part of the Department of Labor’s ongoing efforts to educate the workers and employers about the COVID-19 outbreak.

In addition to the guidance, OSHA recently launched a COVID-19 webpage that provides

infection prevention information specifically for workers and employers, and is actively reviewing and responding to any complaints regarding workplace protection from novel coronavirus, as well as conducting outreach activities.

The Wage and Hour Division is providing information on common issues employers and employees face when responding to COVID-19, including effects on wages and hours worked under the Fair Labor Standards Act and job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. The Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs has also published guidance for federal employees and outlines Federal Employees’ Compensation Act coverage as it relates to the novel coronavirus.

Saving and protecting children for decades, UNICEF, the United Nations children’s agency, has been implementing new ways to reach families more quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. In honor of World Creativity and Innovation Day, meet five innovations that are making 2020 the start of a decade of good: 5. A cryptocurrency fund for game-changing ideas Blockchain increases transparency, security and efficiency, as transactions are publicly visible and do not have to be converted into other currencies for immediate use. A first for the United Nations, the UNICEF Cryptocurrency Fund is able to receive, hold and distribute donations in ether and bitcoin. The fund is helping accelerate and grow social good projects such as Prescrypto, Atix Labs, Utopixar and GIGA, which work in the areas of prescription tracking, investor-matching, community engagement tokens and bringing internet connectivity to schools around the world.

4. An inclusive period tracking app There are more than 200 period-tracking apps; most are targeted to Western adult women and provide information that can be gender-stereotyping or fertility-focused. Founded

by UNICEF’s Asia branch, Oky is the world’s first period tracking app co-created with girls, for girls. Packed with information vetted by

3. Schools made from recycled plastic waste There are three significant problems facing

children in Côte d’Ivoire: There are not enough schools, there are not enough employment opportunities for adults and there is an overabundance of trash. Daily, the Abidjan metropolitan area produces 288 tons of plastic waste.

Tackling all three issues, UNICEF works with Conceptos Plásticos to employ women to recycle plastic into bricks to build classrooms. The bricks, which will be used to build more than 500 classrooms across the country this year, are 100% non-toxic plastic, fire- and wind-re-

Royal Caribbean Group adopts policy allowing cancellations up to 48 hours before sailing With COVID-19 adding uncertainty to travel plans around the world, Royal Caribbean Group said it will give guests greater control over their vacation decisions, allowing guests to cancel cruises as late as two days before departure.

The “Cruise With Confidence” policy allows guests on Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Azamara and Silversea to cancel up to 48 hours before a sailing.

Guests will receive a full credit for their fare, usable on any future sailing of the guest’s choice in 2020 or 2021. The policy applies to both new and existing cruise bookings.

“Our previous policy set earlier

deadlines for guests to cancel their cruises, and that added unnecessary stress,” said Richard Fain, the company’s chairman and CEO. “Trying to guess a month or more in advance where areas of concern about coronavirus might be is challenging for medical experts, much less a family preparing for vacation.

“When circumstances are as fast-changing as they have been recently, it’s good to know you have the option to take a rain check,” Fain said. “We think putting more

control in our guests’ hands helps them make informed decisions about whether to keep their existing vacation plans or trade out for a more convenient time or itinerary.”

Election in Illinois sees Biden as winner

Decision day in Illinois saw Joe Biden winning as the Democratic Presidential candidate at press time, with 49 percent; Dick Durbin as United States Senator; Bobby Rush as U.S Representative for the 1st District, with 79 percent; Robin Kelly as U.S. Representative for the 2nd District, with 80 percent; and Danny Davis as U.S. Representative for the 7th District, with 64 percent.

“Americans in three states went to the polls today,” said Biden during a live stream. “Today, it looks like once again, our campaign had a very good night. With strong support from the African American community and the Latino community.”

Biden said he and Sanders share a common vision. Then, he spoke to the young voters who support Sanders.

“I hear you, I know what’s at stake. I know what we have to do,” he said.

Biden encouraged people to see the best in each other. He also said his prayers are out there for healthcare workers.

The election took place on Tuesday, March 17, despite closures due to COVID-19. While polls closed at 7 p.m., some polling places were given the authority to stay open late.

According to the Board of Elections for the City of Chicago, 73,149 ballots were cast. And, there are 1,524,598 registered voters.

According to the Cook County Clerk’s Office, 251,533 ballots were cast in Suburban Cook County.

And, 950 of the 1,599 precincts reported.

In the Cook County State’s Attorney’s race, Kim Foxx won. Despite allegations of wrongdoing in the handling of the Jussie Smollett case.

Voters seemed to look at Foxx’s gains when it came to criminal justice reform.

Robert Rita, Illinois State Representative for the 28th District; William Davis, Illinois State Representative for the 30th District; Debbie Myers-Martin, Illinois State Representative for the 38th District; Marcus C. Evans, Illinois State Representative for the 33rd District; Nick Smith, Illinois State Representative for the 34th District; ran unopposed for their seats. Michael Hastings, Illinois State Senator for the 19th District, also ran unopposed for his seat.

Thaddeus Jones won for Illinois State Representative for the 29th District, with 55 percent; and Lori Wilcox won for Illinois State Senator for the 40th District. Robert Peter won as Illinois State Senator for the 13th District.

Kimberly du Buclet, Cameron Davis and Frank Avila won for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board.

Jesse Reyes won to fill the vacancy of Illinois State Supreme Court Justice Charles Freeman, who passed away on March 2. Iris Y. Martinez won as the Clerk of Circuit Court of Cook County.

Sharon O. Johnson won as Judge of the Appellate Court, filling the vacancy of Bellows; Celestia L. Mays won as Circuit Court Judge, filling the vacancy of Funderbunk; Teresa Molina won as Circuit Court Judge, filling the vacancy of McCarthy; Sheree Desiree Henry won as Circuit Court Judge, filling the vacancy of Murphy Gorman.

Mary J. Blige Set As Ambassador For American Black Film Festival 2020 Grammy-winning recording artist and Oscar-nominated actress Mary J. Blige has been named the ambassador for this year’s American Black Film Festival (ABFF), which will take place in Miami Beach from June 17 – 21.

Under the title, Blige will help bring media awareness to the ABFF’s mission and its 24year legacy, as well as headline a one-on-one conversation during the Center Stage Talk series on June 18.

The discussion will spotlight Blige’s music career, her transition into film and television and her life’s journey as one of the most successful artists of all time.

Blige joins the list of previous ABFF ambassadors including Idris Elba, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina Hall, La La Anthony, Jay Ellis, Morris Chestnut, Omari Hardwick, Common, and Taraji P. Henson.
