JOHNSON & JOHNSON ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE AURIS HEALTH, INC. Focused on creating the next frontier of surgery, Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), recently announced that Ethicon, Inc., entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Auris Health, Inc. for approximately $3.4 billion in cash. Additional contingent payments of up to $2.35 billion, in the aggregate, may be payable upon reaching certain predetermined milestones.

Auris Health is a privately held developer of robotic technologies, initially focused in lung cancer, with an FDA-cleared platform currently used in bronchoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This acquisition will accelerate Johnson & Johnson’s entry into robotics with potential for growth and expansion into other interventional applications.

SOUTHERN ENVIRONMENTAL LAW CENTER RELEASES EXPLAINER VIDEO ON FEDERAL PROPOSAL TO GUT CLEAN WATER ACT The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently opened the public comment period for citizens to provide feedback on a proposal to gut the Clean Water Act by redefining what waters are protected. This proposal threatens to strip longstanding safeguards for streams, wetlands, and smaller waterways that feed drinking water sources for millions of people across the country, according to a Southern Environmental Law Center press release.

In response, the Southern Environmental Law Center released a video to explain what’s at risk if this proposal is allowed to move forward and encourages the public to submit comments over the next 60 days. The 60-day comment period will be open until mid-April and will be the only chance for the public to take action. For more information, visit southernenvironment.org.

Vivian Covington has been the Mayor of the Village of University Park since 2011 and is once again running for reelection to keep her job which she loves.

Election Day for University Park is on April 2 and Covington is being challenged by two candidates, Dr. Nakia Hall and Joseph Roudez III. “When I first moved to University Park I was a renter and I loved the area so I started going to the board meetings to learn what was going on, who was doing what, and what I could do to help,” said Covington. “I thought that it was the greatest thing in the world to be able to serve the people, to be involved in where I live, and do something good for where I live. That was the reason why I ran the first time,” said Covington.

One of Mayor Covington’s challengers, Dr. Nakia Hall, has been a member of the Crete-Monee School District 201U board since 2009 and has a bachelors degree in teaching, a masters degree in counseling and doctorate in ethical leadership.

Covington’s second challenger, Joseph Roudez III, is a U.S. Army veteran and served on the Village of University Park’s Board of Trustees for 12 years.

truly qualified,” said Roudez. “It would be very selfish of me to sit back and not offer myself to be Mayor of this community when I know that there are a lot of issues that I could address immediately.”

Like many other south suburban communities, University Park has experienced financial challenges. Upon taking office as Mayor, Covington said that the village’s finances were “a hot mess.”

In 2017, according to Mayor Covington, a federal investigation was launched to determine whether or not the Village of University Park has misused money from their TIF fund. Following that, members of the board of trustees called for Covington to resign from her position as Mayor.

Mayor Covington alleged one of her greatest challenges thus far has been having a board of trustees that did not fully support her.

Responding to Covington’s allegations about a lack of support coming from the board of trustees, Roudez, who served as a trustee under Mayor Covington’s leadership said, “There is nothing that the board of trustees denied Mayor Covington that was beneficial for the growth and future well being of our community.”

Roudez, who served as a trustee from 2005 to 2017, added, “We were always in support of an agenda that had progressive priorities for the people,” he said.

The Mayor said that she and the Board of Trustees now have a much better relationship and have adopted new protocols that will help them remain transparent with all their financial decisions.

Discussing the city’s finances further, Covington added, “I don’t handle the money day-to-day,” she said. “The board put together a process that makes sure any money coming out the TIF at any time must go through our attorney and everything is going to be thorough and transparent.”

Mayor Covington said that she anticipates for the financial investigation in University Park to be completed this year following the submission of their 2019 audit.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) opposes a Democratic bill that would make election day a federal holiday. He calls it a Democratic “power grab.” Is he right?

The New York Times reports, without questioning the premise, that the bill is “intended to increase voter turnout.”

McConnell says that its real purpose is to allow federal employees, who skew 1) politically active and 2) Democratic, to get paid to spend Election Day working for their party instead of for the taxpayers.

Former Senator Barbara Boxer best summarized the Democratic response to McConnell’s claim: “What is

Mitch afraid of? Answer: the people.”

They’re both right.

Boxer is spot-on in noting that Republicans do everything they can to make it difficult for people who probably won’t vote Republican to vote at all by opposing early voting, purging voter lists, closing registration offices in poor and/or black areas, etc.

But McConnell is right about the intent of this specific provision. Its purpose is to let the Democratic Party mobilize a new army of federal employees to staff its volunteer operations on Election Day. How do I arrive at the conclusion about intent? By observing what the actual effect of the bill would be.

The people in America who have trouble voting don’t

work for employers who just automatically say “oh, Congress declared it a holiday?

Have it off, with pay!” Some of them are lucky to get Christmas or Thanksgiving off, and if they do it may or may not be paid.

They work at Walmart.

They work at McDonald’s.

They work in factories. They work in retail establishments that are open seven days a week and sometimes 24 hours a day. And many of them rely on their feet, on a bicycle, or on navigating government mass transit to get here and there.

The only effect on their lives of “Election Day as a federal holiday” is that some of those federal employees might wander into their working establishments for a snack.

If Democrats want to

increase voter turnout among the working class, communities of color, etc., they need to be fighting to expand early voting periods, and perhaps to make “Election Day” a 48hour period, from midnight Friday night to midnight Sunday night. They need to be fighting against voter list purges and voter registration office shutdowns.

I’m shocked -- shocked!

-- that they’re just trying to tap taxpayer money for their own party’s political benefit instead.

Majority of Primary Care Providers Recognize Importance of Family Caregivers in Patient Outcomes Primary care providers agree, almost unanimously, that family caregivers play a vital role in patient care and in better patient outcomes, according to a new survey by AARP Research.

However, providers say that time constraints and not knowing who or if there is a family caregiver, prevent them from working with family caregivers for more of their patients.

“Today, forty million Americans are caring for aging parents, spouses and other loved ones, and close to half of them are responsible for medical tasks like injections and wound care,” said AARP Executive Vice President and Chief Advocacy & Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond. “Delivering more treatment on an outpatient basis means that family caregivers are critical members of patient care teams. The entire health care system – from providers to hospitals to insurers – must recognize family caregivers’ critical role and understand that teaming up with them can improve health outcomes and quality of life for both patients and family caregivers.”

AARP Research conducted a survey of 400 primary care physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants to understand their perceptions and interactions with family caregivers, their knowledge of available caregiver resources

that most provider-family caregiver discussions involve instructions on managing medications, performing medical and nursing tasks, and arranging transportation, meals and other services.

Primary care providers agree, almost unanimously, that family caregivers play a vital role in patient care. However, providers say that time constraints and not knowing who or if there is a family caregiver, prevent them from working with family caregivers for more of their patients

and potential barriers to working with them.

Key Findings Nearly all primary care providers (97 percent) said that family caregivers play an

important part in patient care. They reported that sharing patient information with caregivers leads to better patient outcomes, higher patient and caregiver satisfaction and lower hospital readmission rates. The survey found

Illinois Department of Human Services launches WeKnowtheFeeling.org for individuals with gambling disorder The Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) recently announced the launch of a statewide website to provide access to treatment and recovery for those impacted by gambling disorder.

The website, WeKnowtheFeeling. org, will accompany 1-800-GAMBLER and provide another outlet for individuals experiencing gambling disorder and their families 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Individuals can also text ILGAMB to 53342 to find treatment options.

Support specialists who operate the helpline and website are trained in evidence-based approaches to help connect callers and web users with treatment and recovery support services.

The gaming industry is expanding and evolving at unprecedented rates.

The global online gambling market alone is forecasted to grow to more than $59 billion by 2020.

A recent National Survey of Prob-

lem Gambling Services reported that more than 2% of adults in Illinois may have a problem with gambling.

Treatment needs vary with each individual, but often stigma and shame prevent individuals with gambling disorder from asking for help.

“This website will provide another way for Illinoisans struggling with gambling disorder to access resources, treatment options and the support they need,” said Deputy Governor Sol Flores. “We receive thousands of calls to the 24-Hour hotline each month and we hope to see a large number of people utilize our website the same way. Our focus is providing support and treatment to individuals so they can get back on the right track and out of financial hardship.”

New data from Blue Cross Blue Shield, The Health of America Report® (HOA) points to a troubling trend among millennials with major depression.

The new research finds that 1 in 5 millennials diagnosed with major depression are not seeking any form of treatment. Millennials are defined by the Pew Research Center as Americans born between the years 1981 and 1996 (ages 23 to 38 in 2019).

Debate over income tax plan to start soon, but ad battle’s already begun

Springfield – Just three months removed from the most expensive gubernatorial campaign in the nation’s history, divisive political ads could soon begin populating Illinois residents’ screens once again, this time relating to a “fair tax” – or a “jobs tax” – depending on whose ad is being seen.

At issue is Illinois’ income tax structure.

The state Constitution allows lawmakers to set only a single, flat income tax rate regardless of income. It currently sits at 4.95 percent.

But Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker wants to adopt a “graduated” income tax structure which charges higher rates to higher income earners, an effort staunchly opposed by Republican lawmakers.

This change would require a constitutional amendment, a process in which the governor plays no formal role. Instead, three-fifths of both the Illinois Senate (36 votes) and House (71 votes) would have to approve the placement of the constitutional amendment on the 2020 general election ballot, and voters would have to approve it for ratification.

State Sen. Don Harmon, an Oak Park Democrat who is carrying the amendment in the Senate, said he expects the Legislature to begin its role in the process soon – and he expects a fight.

“I’m hoping to start talking about this in earnest when we’re back in Springfield next week,” Harmon said Monday, Feb. 25. “This is certain-

ly going to require a full-fledged campaign to convince voters to ratify the amendment. I expect we’ll be joined on both sides of the debate with vigor and resources.”

Detractors, including a handful of Republicans and one Democrat who have signed onto a non-binding resolution opposing the amendment, are calling it a “jobs tax.” Republican legislative leaders in the House and Senate have pledged to fight the amendment.

Drug Prices Democrats in the Illinois House unveiled a package of bills Wednesday, Feb. 27, they say would help control the spiraling cost of prescription drugs.

Republicans, however, are arguing that the entire issue of prescription drug costs is beyond the scope of state government, and that some of the Democrats’ proposals could actually end up costing taxpayers and making life-saving medications less available to people in the state.

The package of bills is largely based on recommendations from Families USA, a national consumer health advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., which has been working with lawmakers to develop the bills.

Those bills call for regulating some drug prices in much the same way the state regulates utility rates; taxing drug price increases that exceed the rate of inflation; requiring drug

companies to disclose more information about their prices; and creating a mechanism for the state to become a licensed wholesaler of cheaper imported drugs from Canada.

“People in Illinois are being crushed by the high cost of essential medicines,” Rep. Will Guzzardi, a Chicago Democrat and sponsor of one of the bills, said during a news conference announcing the bills.

Guzzardi chairs the House Prescription Drug Affordability and Accessibility Committee, which had an informational hearing earlier in the day on the subject of prescription drug pricing and how it works.

The only person to testify at that hearing was Families USA’s Justin Mendoza, who heads that organization’s “state partnerships” program.

Marijuana Demand A fully-matured adult-use marijuana program in Illinois could produce between $440 million and $676 million in annual revenue, and the expected demand would be far greater than the state’s current supply, according to a demand study released Friday, March 1.

The study was conducted by Freedman and Koski, a Colorado consulting firm which advises local governments on the implementation of marijuana legalization. It was commissioned by state Rep. Kelly Cassidy and state Sen. Heather Steans, both Chicago Democrats who have

been working on legalization efforts for the past two years.

Illinois would have to produce 350,000 to 550,000 pounds in dried cannabis plants each year to meet the expected demand, the study said. The state’s existing industry could supply between only 35 percent and 54 percent of that number. The bill’s sponsors said the expansion of the industry will help increase minority-owned business inclusion.

“We’re contemplating additional license categories such as craft cultivation, transportation and processing to ensure that everyone is at the table,” Cassidy said. “These will create space for more innovation and entrepreneurship in the industry, but more importantly, provide opportunity for more diversity in an industry with a pressing need for it.”

The revenue and usage estimates were determined by using other states with legalized marijuana as a baseline, while factoring in Illinois’ usage and tourism rates among other demographic factors. Illinois would become the second-largest of the 11 states to legalize adultuse cannabis and the third-largest jurisdiction in the world after Canada and California.

The tax revenue estimates were based on a total mature-market marijuana industry revenue number of $1.69 billion to $2.58 billion, which was determined by medicinal prices and the usage estimates. These revenues, taxed at an assumed rate of 26.5 percent, would produce between $443,690,100 and $676,481,400 annually.

Sensory Loss Can Bring Increased Risk of Isolation, Depression According to a study by The University of Chicago, nearly 94 percent of older adults in the United States are living with at least one diminished sense. While many seniors experience hearing or vision loss, senses such as taste, touch and smell can also be affected.

Diminished senses are commonly regarded as minor annoyances, but they have also been linked to serious and long-lasting problems for older adults, including loneliness and feelings of social isolation. Researchers at the University of British Columbia examined the impact of undiagnosed or untreated hearing issues in seniors ages 60 to 69 and found that for every 10 decibel drop in hearing sensitivity, the odds of social isolation increase by 52 percent.

The Battle for Star Trek Revealed in Newest Volume of Award-Winning Book Series These Are the Voyages: Gene Roddenberry and Star Trek in the 1970s, Volume 1, from Jacobs/Brown Press, is the fourth installment in a heralded series of books about the development and legacy of Star Trek.

This latest volume delivers surprising revelations concerning the decade-long fight to resurrect the series after its 1969 cancellation

by NBC. A key part of the story is Gene Roddenberry’s struggles against studios and networks, which severely compromised his health.

“I was stunned as I went through those letters and memos,” said author Marc Cushman. “My heart went out to Gene Roddenberry. Despite Star Trek’s remarkable popularity, Gene didn’t see any of his promised 25% profit participation. And, as he fought to bring Star Trek back, he was usually ignored or disrespected by those in charge.”

As the 1970s progressed, the show’s legions of fans fueled a Star Trek boom. Syndicated repeats of the episodes dominated their time slots in over 150 U.S. cities and in 70 foreign markets; merchandising hit unparalleled levels with the sales in the millions; and fan conventions attracted tens of thousands.

An Associated Press reporter described one gathering as being like Beatlemania.

Cushman’s previous three books in his “These Are the Voyages” series cover Star Trek’s creation and production in the 1960s.

The narrative now continues into the 1970s, a defining era in the history of Star Trek, based on hundreds of interviews and a foundation of studio source materials, including thousands of

documents from the Gene Roddenberry private archives, which, Cushman says, “contain every scrap of paper which Gene had ever written.”

Throughout the 1970s, as Paramount Pictures remained reluctant to resurrect the expensive series, Cover of new book other studios and featuring Gene Roddenberry, circa 1975. networks attempted to replicate Trek’s success.

This led to Roddenberry’s 1970s TV films Genesis II, The Questor Tapes, Planet Earth, and Strange New World, all borrowing elements from Star Trek.

Cushman discovered that all of the pilots were sold as series, with scripts written and production dates planned, yet internal disputes doomed each. “After numerous disagreements with the networks, Gene was either forced out or driven to quit,” Cushman reveals.

Star Trek finally returned with a mid-1970s Emmy-winning animated series, then 1979’s Star Trek – The Motion Picture. In between these milestones was “Phase II,” a planned Trek series for 1977, with all but one of the original cast members signed.

“Paramount delayed bringing Star Trek back for so long that, when they finally decided to make a movie, the executives demanded it be epic in both story and scope in order to meet growing expectations,” notes Cushman. “As a result, they rejected the scripts Roddenberry wrote, and shot down ideas from other Star Trek writers, one of whom pitched a story about the universe blowing up. The studio said it wasn’t big enough!”

U.S. Department of Labor awards $85 million in grants, including in Chicago The U.S. Department of Labor has announced $85 million in grants will be awarded to YouthBuild programs in 32 states.

YouthBuild is an education and training program with a strong pre-apprenticeship component that helps at-risk youth complete high school or state equivalency degree programs, earn industry-recognized credentials for in-demand occupations, and undergo training to build housing for low-income or homeless individuals and families in their communities.

This set of awards mark a significant expansion of the Construction Plus model of YouthBuild, which allows grantees to offer training in locally in-demand industries beyond the required construction training, such as healthcare, information technology, hospitality and retail services, and logistics.

This year’s grant awards include 65 programs that applied to offer Construction Plus training. Two YouthBuild funding participants are located in Chicago.

The grants announced recently range from approximately $700,000 to $1.1 million each and will fund 81 YouthBuild programs.

And scam calls and robocalls are a growing problem for everyone. Here are a few tricks to help you dodge scammers and give you peace of mind.

Know the Signs Scam call technology is always changing, so it’s important to stay vigilant against scammers’ attempts to get you to answer your phone.

Every year, they make millions off innocent victims with new techniques. Their latest method, known as number-spoofing technology, could fool even the savviest consumers into answering the phone. Number-spoofing makes a scammer’s number appear as either a familiar number with a local area code or even come up on Caller ID as the “IRS.” If you don’t answer, they may also leave “urgent” callback voicemails via robocalls. Recognizing these tactics can help you stay safe. If you suspect a call (or a voicemail) is a scam, hang up. If you want to be sure, don’t call back the number provided but instead, look up your local IRS Customer Service number on the Internet and call the IRS directly.

Use Protection Tools Check out what technology your wireless company offers that can protect you from scam and spoof calls. For example, T-Mobile offers free scam and spoofing protection for customers with Scam ID and Scam Block. These tools are made available to all postpaid customers and live on the T-Mobile network, so no app is required. As soon as a call reaches the network, it’s analyzed and if it’s scam, the incoming call is tagged as Scam Likely. If customers want to stop scam calls completely, they can turn on Scam Block. With these tools in place, in the last two years, T-Mobile has alerted customers to over 10 billion Scam Likely calls. And in 2019, T-Mobile reports warning customers

Once other wireless providers implement STIR/ SHAKEN, Caller Verified will work on calls made across networks.

Know Your Rights While scam-blocking technology can help you filter out scam and spoof calls, it’s also

important to know your rights. Many of these calls use intimidation tactics to scare consumers into divulging sensitive information over the phone. The IRS website notes that they will always make attempts to reach you via postal mail first and they will never ask you for a specific form of payment. You should know that you always have the right to formally contest the amount owed, and the IRS will not make threats against you or your family regarding arrest or deportation. If you have any elderly or susceptible family members, talk to them about how to avoid such scams and consider setting them up with the latest technology to help them stay safe.

NAACP Restructures To Advance Advocacy Strategy The nation’s most prominent civil rights organization announced recently during its annual national board meeting in New York, a strategic restructuring which better positions the organization to lead the critical policy advocacy and social justice work needed to ensure the rights of all people.

The group also signed memoranda of understanding with several African American organizations designed to expand its capacity to engage Black voters nationally.

“The NAACP is a membership-based advocacy organization with 2,220 branches and a unique and incomparable ability to drive change at the local, regional, and national levels. The current political and policy climate demands an NAACP that is agile and responsive

in the face of the serious challenges confronting communities of color, including the continued assault on voting rights and foundational threats to democracy,” said Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP. This new structure will enable the Association to deploy resources efficiently as conditions on the ground dictate, to employ a research-based approach to civic engagement, and to ensure closer alignment between National Office staff and NAACP branches across the country.

Over the past two years, the NAACP has pursued a relentless strategy of rebuilding traditional relationships and establishing new ones as a means of consolidating its position as the most powerful civic engagement group in the African American community. This year, a key part of

that strategy is “partnership.”

“During our long history, the NAACP functions at its highest capacity when our partnerships with our allies, including those in our community and those with whom we have a strategic alignment, are operating with their highest potential,” said NAACP National Board Chairman Leon W. Russell.

“Today we simultaneously embarked on an internal restructuring which positions us to evolve as an organization in ways which allow us to maximize our partners and strategic alliances in ways that empower our community,” added Chairman Russell.

As part of its legacy to this historical struggle, the NAACP will participate in the Year of Return in Accra, Ghana later this year as a means of connecting the past struggle with the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice for all people of color in the African Diaspora.
