WEBMD HEALTH HERO AWARDS HONOR RESEARCHERS, CAREGIVERS AND ADVOCATES TRANSFORMING THE IMPACT OF CANCER WebMD celebrated the accomplishments and contributions of researchers, health care professionals and advocates who are helping to transform the impact of cancer during its Health Heroes event in New York City recently.

Advocate, filmmaker, and cancer survivor Sandra Lee and 20/20 co-anchor, ABC News correspondent, and cancer survivor Amy Robach kicked off the event following opening remarks from WebMD CEO Bob Brisco. Robach noted that this year’s Health Heroes are “…changing the world. FIRST PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD NOW CLOSED ON PROPOSED INDUSTRIAL HEMP REGULATIONS The 45-day First Notice public comment period on proposed industrial hemp regulations closed at the end of business on February 11, 2019. Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) staff drafted proposed rules after the Industrial Hemp Act was signed into law in August 2018. This new law allows individuals or corporations licensed through IDOA to cultivate industrial hemp. IDOA will also register individuals or corporations that will process industrial hemp.

Once IDOA submits its comment responses and any proposed rule modifications to JCAR for review, that will open the Second Notice period. During that at least 45-day period, public comments on the updated proposed rules should be submitted directly to JCAR by letter, fax, phone, or email. IDOA will publish instructions on its website as to how to submit comments to JCAR once the Second Notice period is open. As soon as the rules are finalized and approved

by JCAR, IDOA will begin accepting applications for industrial hemp licenses and registrations.

WDB Marketing is a black-owned full-service marketing company, headquartered in South Holland, that was established in 2006. Over the last decade, the company has worked with over 3,000 black-owned businesses throughout the nation and witnessed firsthand the enormous impact black businesses are having in their communities.

The CEO of MDB Marketing, Keeana Barber, is a black entrepreneur herself and made it her mission three years ago to create the LEGACY Awards Gala which is an event that honors and celebrates black entrepreneurship while providing black business owners with the opportunity to network with each other.

The third annual LEGACY Awards Gala will soon be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Malcolm X College located on 1900 W. Jackson, in Chicago and will amplify the message that black businesses matter.

“The purpose of the event is for people to be able to celebrate black entrepreneurs but also to provide a platform for all of us to connect and ideally grow our businesses together,” said Keeana Barber, chief executive officer of MDB Marketing.

As CEO of MDB Marketing, Barber has the first-hand experience of being a black entrepreneur and understands the importance of having black-owned businesses across the Greater Chicagoland Area.

“From an emotional level, black entrepreneurship is the success story in the community and shows people that they can do something on their own and be very successful at it. Of course, it also creates jobs because small businesses are the number one job creator and the number one employer in America and black businesses are a part of that. The more successful we are, the more that we can hire and we generally hire from within the community,” said Barber. “As I’ve grown, I now have nine people that work for me and I hire form the community so the more people that support me and support

my company, the more we have been able to hire.”

In knowing the impact that entrepreneurship can have on a community through job creation and recirculation of community dollars, Barber said that she is motivated to help black business owners in any way she can.

“It’s easier to touch me and to make me want to do something and to impact these communities as a business owner than it ever will be for these larger corporations because they, for the most part, don’t live in our community and they have never visited our community, so to them, pulling their big box out of a neighborhood, not that they necessarily want to do it, but they don’t feel that pain that we feel,” said Barber.

This year, The LEGACY Awards Gala will honor seven black business owners and community leaders for building LEGACY, which is an acronym that stands for leadership, education, growth, advocacy, community, and youth.

Solar Jobs Down 3 Percent Nationwide in 2018, But Some Key States See Job Growth The U.S. solar industry employs 242,343 workers as of 2018, a decline of nearly 8,000 jobs (3.2 percent) compared to 2017, according to the National Solar Jobs Census 2018 released recently by The Solar Foundation.

This marks the second year in a row that solar jobs have declined after seven years of steady growth. At the same time, solar jobs increased in 29 states in 2018, including in many states with emerging solar markets.

States with the highest employment gains include Florida, Illinois, Texas, and New York State. Other states that saw job growth include Ohio, Washington State, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Virginia, and Tennessee.

The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit educational and research organization, issues the National Solar Jobs Census each year to provide comprehensive and reliable data on the U.S. solar workforce.

Overall, solar employment has grown 159 percent since

the first Census was released in 2010, adding nearly 150,000 well-paying jobs across all 50 states.

The 2018 National Solar Jobs Census for the first time includes jobs numbers for Puerto Rico, which has 1,997 solar workers as of 2018.

With Puerto Rico jobs included, the total number of U.S. solar jobs comes to 244,340.

“Despite two challenging years, the long-term outlook for this industry remains positive as even more Americans turn to low-cost solar energy and storage solutions to power their homes and businesses,” said Andrea Luecke, President and Executive Director at The Solar Foundation. “However, it will take exceptional leadership at the federal, state, and local levels to spur this growth and address the urgent challenge of climate change. Expanding solar energy and storage across America will create high-quality jobs, reduce carbon emissions, boost local economies, and build resilient and adaptive communities.”

Nationwide, the jobs decline in 2018 reflects a slowdown in installed solar capacity. Solar

companies delayed many utility-scale projects in late 2017 while awaiting the outcome of a petition for new tariffs on solar panels and cells. These delays led to reduced capacity growth and fewer jobs in the first three quarters of 2018.

At the state level, policy challenges and a difficult business climate contributed to lower jobs numbers in some states with established solar markets.

In other states, supportive policies and the rapidly declining cost of solar technologies helped drive an increase in employment in 2018.

It solidifies our commitment to getting our state on track for a future driven by renewable energy that will make Wisconsin a stronger, better place to live, work, and play,” said Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers. “We look forward to continuing our promise to build a clean economy that incentivizes energy innovation, diversifies Wisconsin jobs and energy sources, and promotes efficiency, affordability, and accessibility in clean energy production.”

“While our solar workforce continued to grow last year, we need to do even more to develop and deploy renewable energy and continue to build a strong clean energy economy in Minnesota.”

This year’s National Solar Jobs Census is based on a rigorous survey of solar establishments conducted between September and October 2018. The survey included approximately 59,300 phone calls and over 49,000 emails. The survey was administered to 13,945 separate establishments, of which 2,697 provided full or substantially completed surveys.

How One South Suburban Mayor Works To Maintain A Quality of Life For Residents

As Mayor of the Village of Matteson, Sheila Chalmers-Currin often says that upon taking office two years ago she was quickly baptized in what could go wrong in retail. What she means by this is that during her first year as Mayor, she saw a mass exodus of big box stores like Sam’s Club, Target, and Toys R Us from the community and had to immediately take action.

Two years later, she has succeeded in maintaining the quality of life for her residents with a thriving community center, redeveloped business corridors, a variety of safe and affordable housing options, and has big plans to keep growing.

“The vision that I talked about when I initially came into office, was the vision that we love this town and we love our accomplishments but we also know that there is so much more we can do with this and I want to continue that. When I get up every day, I think that it is a gift and a privilege to be the Mayor here and so with those thoughts, I want to make sure that it is a town that years from now my grandkids are saying I love living here in the Village of Matteson,” said Chalmers-Currin.

The Village of Matteson currently has about 20,000 residents with an average household income of just under $82,000.

Mayor Chalmers-Currin sees the community as a gateway to the south suburbs of Chicago because it is perfectly situated between Lincoln Highway, Cicero Ave., and Interstate 57. All of these culminating attributes have helped the Mayor to attract new businesses and encourage surrounding communities to support her efforts.

building their business here, they know that they can get right on I-57 and that we have Cicero Ave. right here and that Lincoln Highway will take them straight across to Indiana. I really think we are at the center of everything and when I talk to other communities, they say, ‘where goes the Village of Matteson, where goes the south region’ and that’s how important we are,” said Chalmers-Currin.

Just as important as economic development, if not more important, is active community engagement which can be found every day of the week at the Matteson Community Center where residents of all ages can participate in dozens of programs, take fitness classes, have birthday parties, or simply just socialize on a Monday morning. The Mayor said that it is important to her that everything she does revolves around family and community, and that is more than evident at the community center.

“This work is so important and we all play a part in it,” said Chalmers-Currin.

"Some people only see the big picture but there are a lot of those little integral parts of it that make us a family and we are truly a village that cares about everyone.”

Other key findings from the National Solar Jobs Census 2018 include: l Approximately 155,000 solar

jobs, or two-thirds of the total, are in the installation and project development sector. Of these, about 87,000 jobs (56 percent) are focused on the residential market segment. The non-residential segment includes 46,000 jobs (30 percent), including about 12,500 jobs in community solar. The utility-scale market comprises 22,000 jobs (14 percent). l Solar workforce demographics saw little change from the previous year. In 2018, women made up 26 percent of the workforce; Latino or Hispanic workers made up 17 percent; black or African American workers made up 8 percent; and Asian workers made up 9 percent. l In 2018, 26 percent of solar establishments reported it was “very difficult” to find qualified candidates

to fill open positions, a substantial increase from the 18 percent reporting such challenges in 2017. l With a backlog of utility-scale projects and new policy incentives in key states, the outlook for solar jobs is expected to improve in 2019.

Survey respondents predict that solar jobs will increase 7 percent in 2019, bringing the total to 259,400 jobs.

“As one of the largest utility and commercial solar contractors in the U.S., we were impacted by several factors that caused market instability in 2018,” said George Hershman, president of Swinerton Renewable Energy. “Tariffs on solar cells and modules, steel, and aluminum increased costs and impacted projects that were already in the pipeline.

Despite these economic factors, we

began 2019 with a robust pipeline that includes new projects in existing and emerging markets. Together with industry partners, we will continue to advocate at the federal level in support of long-term solutions that support growth for solar energy.”

“This report highlights that in order to continue adding jobs, the solar industry is going to have to work harder to reduce the cost of going solar,” said Samuel Adeyemo, co-founder and chief operating officer of Aurora Solar.

“Over the past seven years, this was accomplished by lowering module prices and democratizing financing. At Aurora, we believe that over the next seven years, it will come from reducing soft costs, such that solar gets to the point where it is the default option for most homes and businesses.”

He cut two sought-after tracks with Freddie Perren and Fonce Mizell, half of the hit-making machine behind the Jackson 5; he got together with Hal Davis, who was preparing a Marvin Gaye-Diana Ross album, to cut another topical gem, "The World Is Rated X." And Marvin funnelled his anger over the Vietnam War, and his brother's experiences there, into a sequel of sorts to "What's Going On," the poetic holiday ballad, "I Want To Come Home For Christmas." He even re-cut "You're The Man" as an eerie funk jam, perhaps for the LP as a bookend to the single.

None of these tracks or any other on the LP, except the single, were issued at the time.

Three tracks from the album are newly mixed

by SaLaAM ReMi, the songwriter and producer long associated with Nas, the Fugees, and Amy Winehouse: "My Last Chance," "Symphony," and "I'd Give My Life For You." Also included is the rare, long LP version of Gaye's cancelled 1972 Christmas single, plus an unreleased vault mix of its instrumental B-side. Over the years, songs from You're The Man have been included on several CD releases but 15 of the album's 17 tracks have not been released on vinyl until now.

You're The Man's 2LP vinyl edition includes new liner notes by Marvin Gaye biographer David Ritz.

In his essay, Ritz delves into Gaye's deeply personal internal conflict as a source of creative vigor and emotional burden as he experienced What's Going On's massive success and all that came with it. "Now I could do what I wanted," Gaye told Ritz in an interview that first appeared in Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye. "For most people that would be a blessing. But for me the thought was heavy.

They said I'd reached the top, and that scared me because Mother used to say, 'First ripe, first rotten.'

When you're at the top there's nowhere to go but down. No, I needed to keep going up – raising my consciousness – or I'd fall back on my behind.

When would the war stop? That's what I wanted to know – the war inside my soul."

Despite his inner turmoil, that same year Gaye recorded a duets album with Diana Ross, and he accepted an offer to write what became his landmark Trouble Man film score. A year later, he released Let's Get It On, the biggest hit of his career.

In addition to You're The Man, Motown/UMe will release a new expanded edition of Marvin Gaye's 1965 album, A Tribute To The Great Nat King Cole, digitally on March 15. Honoring what would have been Cole's 100th birthday, the album's original mono mix makes its digital debut with the new edition, which also adds more than a dozen bonus tracks, including six alternate takes from the studio sessions.

Getting The Word Out To promote kidney health and raise awareness of kidney disease, Rice made a series of PSAs for the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). The NKF is the largest, most comprehensive and longstanding organization dedicated to the awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease.

Given Rice’s genuine concern about and personal connection to the disease, NKF enlisted the widely beloved sports legend to help to speak to the general public as well as kidney patients. He already has lots of practice doing so up close and personally whenever he joins his brother at a neighborhood dialysis center in Jackson, Miss.

“I’d go there to mainly be with my brother, of course, but I always walk around the room to say hello and socialize with the other dialysis patients,” Rice said. “You don’t realize it until you see for yourself in centers that there are lots of people on dialysis. It puts everything in perspective whenever I start complaining. When I visit the dialysis center, people often know who I am and are happy to see me, and if I can bring a smile to some faces and make them forget even for a second, that warms my heart. That’s how I felt playing football, seeing the smiles in the stands and helping people to forget problems for a little while.”

Rice is also part of NKF’s continuing and growing Heart Your Kidneys (#HeartYourKidneys) public campaign to help elevate awareness of the kidneys to the status of other vital organs such as the heart. He is amazed that most people know very little about their kidneys and that some don’t know the kidneys are located in the lower back below the rib cage—or that each person has two. Rice hopes his new PSAs with NKF will help change that.

“It’s important to me to keep working hard to get the word out with NKF, because you can see that this really hits home for me in more ways than one,” Rice said.
