NEWS briefly EDUCATION BLACK MEN LAUNCH VIRTUAL SCHOLARSHIP COACHING SERVICES Million Dollar Scholar, an education social enterprise that empowers students with the knowledge and skills they need to compete for scholarships, is responding to COVID-19 by launching an array of virtual scholarship and financial-aid coaching services that will engage families across the United States.

The coaching services will center on equipping families with the information they need to prepare their scholar(s) for success in applying for scholarship opportunities that offset the costs of higher education and assist them in avoiding student debt.

“Student debt was a major policy and social issue in America well before COVID-19. In the midst of this pandemic, it’s a downright emergency. We have to equip families and high school students with the information they need to make the best decisions on making higher education affordable,” says Derrius Quarles, co-founder of Million Dollar Scholar.

FIRE FIGHTER CANCER AWARENESS MONTH The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is joining forces with the Fire Fighter Cancer Support Network and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) to raise awareness about the increased risk of cancer amongst fire fighters. The goal of this campaign is to provide fire fighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop lifesaving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments.

According to a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), fire fighters face a 9 percent increase in cancer diagnoses and a 14 percent increase in cancer-related deaths compared to the general population.

The OSFM partnered with the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) and the MABAS-Illinois to create the State of Illinois Preliminary Exposure Reduction Training project in 2020.

This project was developed to deliver critical fire fighter health and life safety research, education, training and basic equipment to fire departments across the state. The intent of the project is to raise awareness of the increased cancer risks faced by fire fighters, provide departments with free basic equipment that can be used for preliminary exposure reduction for personnel on incident response scenes, as well as training on how to properly use those tools.

Bar owners express frustration over liquor license process Continued from page 1

Bar owners in Harvey are claiming that there is an inconsistency in policies when it comes to an excise tax for liquor. And, even after some claim to have paid the fees, reportedly, they still have not received their liquor licenses.

Lynn Hudson-Brown and her husband, Ronald Brown, own Sugababyyy’s at 15414 Park Ave., in Harvey, Ill. Hudson-Brown has been a resident of Harvey for 15 years. “Because I lived here, I decided to [do] my part and help Harvey turn the tide. It always had a negative stigma, I wanted to try and provide an upscale estab-

lishment where adults could go and have fun, still safe, still welcome and still provide great service,” she said.

Joe Brooks, owner of Entrance Entertainment Venue, claims he has paid fees and fines, but alleges, he still has not received his business license.

“I just want to be treated fair. If I pay for certain documents, I would like to receive certain documents. I don’t want to be told I can be open without my documents. I need my documents, because if the state comes in, I can also be shut down because I don’t have my business license to show hard copy,” he said.

John Hamilton, owner of Club O, has lived in Harvey for 35 years. He worked at the club, then in 2018,

he bought the club. According to Hamilton, the club has been subject to inspections and more than $100,000 in fines and fees have been paid out in order to remain in compliance. Hamilton claims he has paid $23,000 in excise taxes. Moreover, Hudson-Brown claims more than $10,000 was paid in excise taxes while Brooks claims $10,000 was paid in excise taxes.

“It’s just sad that we have to do all this to receive what we should get once we take care of business,” Brooks said. “We just want to be able to open up when the state says we can open up.”

Calls to Harvey Mayor Christopher Clark were not returned at the time of writing this report.

An open fund for projects debunking vaccine misinformation

The uncertainty and developing nature of the coronavirus pandemic continues to generate related misinformation. Fact-checkers have been hard at work debunking falsehoods online, with nearly 10,000 fact checks about the pandemic currently showing up across our products.

The global rollout of COVID-19 vaccines is exacerbating a perennial problem of misinformation about immunization. To support additional debunking efforts, the Google News Initiative is launching a COVID-19 Vaccine Counter-Misinformation Open Fund worth up to $3 million.

While the COVID-19 infodemic has been global in nature, misinformation has also been weaponized to target specific populations. Some of the available research also suggests that the audiences coming across misinformation and those seeking fact checks don’t necessarily overlap.

For this reason, the Open Fund is welcoming applications from projects that aim to broaden the audience of fact checks, particularly with those who may be disproportionately affected by misinformation in mind.

The fund is global and open to news organizations of every size which have a proven track record in fact-checking and debunking activities or partner with an organization with such recognition.

WHILE THE COVID-19 INFODEMIC HAS BEEN GLOBAL IN NATURE, MISINFORMATION HAS ALSO BEEN WEAPONIZED TO TARGET SPECIFIC POPULATIONS. We will prioritize collaborative projects with an interdisciplinary team and clear ways to measure success. Eligible applications might include a partnership between an established fact-checking project and a media outlet with deep roots in a specific community, or a collaborative platform for journalists and doctors to jointly source misinformation and publish fact checks.

Home Value Disparities Between Races Are Still Pronounced, but Shrinking Typical values for Black- and Latinx-owned homes still lag behind overall U.S. home values, but the gap is narrowing.

A new Zillow® analysis shows homes owned

by Black and Latinx households are worth 16.2% and 10.2% less, respectively, than the typical U.S. home -- gaps that have closed by about 4 percentage points from their widest points following the Great Recession.

Homes owned by non-Hispanic white and Asian families, meanwhile, have typical values 2.9% and 3.7% higher than the typical U.S. home.

While inequity in home values continues to persist, the data show them steadily, albeit slowly, converging. Since homeownership is the single largest driver of wealth for many households, the value and appreciation of a home is extremely impactful for families.

Before the Great Recession, the gap between Black-owned home values and all home values was about 15%, but grew to 20% by March 2014.

Similarly, Latinx-owned homes saw the largest home value gap in May 2012 at 14% -- 2 percentage points larger than before the housing bubble.

Now, nearly a decade later, home values for Black- and Latinx-owned homes are back at pre-bubble levels, and continue to narrow despite the current economic crisis.

One reason for the wide gap is that the housing bust hit communities of color especially hard. Subprime loans were targeted to take advantage of the most vulnerable communities, and the ensuing wave of foreclosures hurt homeownership and home values disproportionately for Black and Latinx homeowners.

Black homeownership rates are also on the rise since the Great Recession, despite challenges for Black homebuyers to secure a mortgage.

ONE REASON FOR THE WIDE GAP IS THAT THE HOUSING BUST HIT COMMUNITIES OF COLOR ESPECIALLY HARD. SUBPRIME LOANS WERE TARGETED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE MOST VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES, AND THE ENSUING WAVE OF FORECLOSURES HURT HOMEOWNERSHIP AND HOME VALUES DISPROPORTIONATELY FOR BLACK AND LATINX HOMEOWNERS. Fast forward 12 years, and homeownership rates and home values are still recovering for these communities. While home value growth turned positive for U.S. homes in August 2012, it took an additional two years for Black and Latinx homes to see this same growth.

“It has taken nearly a decade for the home value gap to return to pre-recession levels, but still, the gap remains very large,” says Zillow Economist Treh Manhertz. “With Black and

brown communities and jobs hit disproportionately hard in the pandemic, there has been reason to worry another dip may be on the horizon that could slow or stop the progress.

However, this is not the case, as the same factors that widened the gap in the Great Recession are not surfacing this time. Thanks to rock bottom rates on the most secure mortgages, extended forbearance programs, and rising home prices, there are no signs of another widening of the gap coming this year. However, through these turbulent times, continued vigilance and targeted intervention by policymakers is crucial to keep the progress going for communities of color.”

Telework has the ability to expand the opportunity for homeownership even further for Black and Latinx renters, providing the flexibility to own a home in a less-expensive area.

Permanent vote-by-mail expansion moves to House floor GOP members say measure should require more security

Springfield — The House Executive Committee advanced an election bill that would make permanent some of the expansions to mail-in voting that were passed for the 2020 general election.

The bill would require election authorities to accept mail-in ballots that were submitted without sufficient postage and allow election authorities to set up collection sites

or drop-boxes that accept ballots without postage.

Lawmakers approved those measures last spring for the 2020 election in order to accommodate concerns about voting in-person during the COVID-19 pandemic. But those earlier expansions of mail-in voting expired on Jan. 1.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Katie Stuart, D-Edwardsville, said those vote-bymail provisions were successful in the 2020 general election and should continue in the upcoming consolidated elections. The consolidated primary

election is scheduled for Feb. 23.

“This will be permanent because our election authorities who chose to use it found it was successful,” Stuart said.

The bill would also allow local election authorities to continue the use of curbside voting during early voting or on Election Day. It would not require local election offices to mail or email vote-by-mail ballot applications to voters who cast a ballot in previous elections. This measure was included in the previous vote-by-mail law for the 2020 general election but will not be extended. www.citizennewspapergroup.com

In order for a ballot returned to a drop-box to be counted in an election, it must be returned before voting closes on Election Day. Some Republicans on the House Executive Committee said the bill’s requirement that the state Board of Elections provide guidance, rather than rules, for securing collection sites does not go far enough to provide security.

Rep. Tim Butler, R-Springfield, who raised similar concerns about the previous vote-by-mail bill, said the bill should require the ISBE to create

rules for drop-box security. “I think this is important for election integrity, and for people to know that in this state when they drop off the ballot, that nothing is going to happen. And I think we as the Legislature need to give an executive branch agency with oversight of our elections much more clarification as to how these boxes should be built,” Butler said.

The bill, Senate Bill 145, moved to the full House floor, with Democratic committee members voting in favor and Republican members voting against it.

Target Provides Update on Holiday Sales Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) recently announced that comparable sales in the combined November/December period grew 17.2 percent, driven by a 4.3 percent increase in traffic and a 12.3 percent increase in average ticket. Same Day Services and Stores as Hubs Comparable digital sales growth was driven primarily by the company’s same-day fulfillment services (Order Pick Up, Drive Up and Shipt), which together grew 193 percent.

Of the services, Drive Up grew the fastest at more than 500 percent, while Target’s sales fulfilled by Shipt grew more than 300 percent.

Between store-originated sales, same-day services and the company’s ship-from-store capability, approximately 95 percent of Target’s sales in the November/December period were fulfilled by its stores.

Merchandise Category Results The company continued to gain market share throughout the November/December time period in all five of its core merchandising categories. Growth was the strongest in Home, which saw a comparable sales increase in the low-20 percent range.

Comparable sales in Hardlines also grew in the low 20 percent range, reflecting mid-20 percent growth in Electronics. In Food & Beverage, comparable sales growth was in line with the company average, while Beauty & Essentials saw growth in the low teens.

Apparel delivered comparable sales growth in the high-single digit range.

New Survey: Pandemic has had a substantial negative impact on health and fitness habits for most According to a new survey, a majority of people have reported gaining weight, losing muscle and struggling with their mental health during the past year. We begin in beautiful Nairobi Nairobi is known for exciting activities like Rugby, the iconic Coke Studio Africa music show, and the Storymoja Festival.

Once a year, book lovers gather at the Storymoja festival to enjoy the literary arts.

Coke Studio Africa is the biggest show in all of Africa. It began more than seven years ago and features different music genres and cultures, and artists come from places like Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Uganda, and South Africa.

Unavoidable in Kenya’s capital city is the famed African safaris – after all, the city lays claim as the continent’s safari capital.

“Kenya remains one of my favorite places to visit on the continent because you get a lot of the Mother Land vibes there,” stated Chandell Stone. She owns Destination Impact, an African American-owned volunteer travel company that offers service opportunities across the African Diaspora.

“Being in Africa is always powerful and empowering,” noted Stone, who, despite the pandemic, planned to fly out of New York to Africa following her phone con-

“I can’t stay away … I love going to Africa,” the globetrotter proclaimed.

A short distance away from Nairobi in nearby Karen, Kenya, people young and old still find the red-colored dirt as fascinating as the banana trees that line the stunning city’s hills. Workshops housing designers and artists cram busy roads that offer sightly and breathtaking views of the high skies against lush green landscaping and colorful flowers.

According to New York Times Travel Writer Ginanne Brownell Mitic, Karen, Kenya, was named after the Danish writer Karen Blixen, who published works like “Out of Africa” under the pen name Isak Dinesen.

“Karen has become a home to both ex-pats and wealthy Kenyans, with stately villas and a few five-star hotels for travelers who want to be luxuriously situated close to the airports for safari excursions or beach holidays,” Mitic wrote.

“It is also home to some of the city’s most intriguing and exclusive places to shop, for items like statement silver jewelry, hand-carved chairs and locally dyed and sewn fashion.”

In Nairobi, residents can shop at many open-air markets throughout the city, including Maasai Market, Toi Market, City Market Nairobi, and Muthurwa Market.

Maasai Market, located outside the Nairobi Court of Appeals, opens each Saturday and contains an array of African jewelry and sought-after fabric.

Toi Market, located in the Adams Arcade and Ngong Road area, routinely bustles with shoppers who can find items like dresses, skirts, slacks, and jeans.

City Market, which is managed by the Nairobi City Council, is located at the intersection of the busy Market Road and Muindi Mbingu Street. It features drums, artwork,

flowers, meat, fruits, and vegetables.

At Muthurwa Market, located in the Central Business District of the city, the crowded and often noisy retail space offers a range of food items and clothing.

Nairobi also features a “lit” nightlife, Stone and other travel experts exclaimed.

Located in the Kilimani area on the first floor of Galana Plaza, the B Club counts among the most well-known among Nairobi’s residents and visitors. It is known for its charm and exotic ambiance.

Operating in a relatively small space on Lang’ata Road, 1824 Whisky Bar is regularly jammed with partygoers. It also has the nickname “Sunday School,” because of the club’s excitement on Sundays.

As for food and places to stay, Stone of Destination Impact said delicacies in Kenya won’t disappoint, though she prefers Nigeria’s offerings over Kenya.

Stone also recommends two Black-owned hotels, the Sovereign and Westwood.

The Sovereign is a five-star boutique hotel located in Kisumu within the business district.

The Westwood sits in the Westlands area off Eldama Road and less than an hour from Nairobi’s airport.

It borders Karura Forest, where outdoor diners have a birds-eye view of wild animals, including Sykes monkeys. “I’m not a hotel person, I think the best experience is at an Airbnb, but the Sovereign and Westwood are good hotels,” Stone declared.

Finally, airfare can be a significant obstacle to visiting anywhere in Africa.

But Stone said prices have dramatically decreased. “A few years ago, it would be $1,500 for a flight out of JFK Airport to Kenya,” she noted. “Now, you can get a flight for $600 or $700. It is worth it. I know I can’t stay away from Africa.”

Estimated to affect one in 10 older adults and cost billions annually, the threat of elder financial fraud is pervasive, and especially so right now.

With seniors more isolated than ever due to the pandemic and stimulus checks being sent to millions of Americans nationwide, experts suggest that seniors and their families be extra vigilant.

“Scammers look for key time periods where money and private financial information are in motion. Not only is IRS fraud one of the most common and successful types of scams that exists, as a general rule, additional money equates to additional fraud,” says Ron Long, head of Aging Client Services at Wells Fargo.

“Scammers are banking on the fact that many seniors are apart from families and friends due to COVID-19. When someone is alone, physically or socially, they often miss out on the added benefit of a second pair of eyes and ears.”

Compounding the risks associated with isolation is the number of seniors who feel their chances of falling victim to a financial scam is unlikely.

According to a recent Wells Fargo study conducted by The Harris Poll, 69 percent of all seniors age 60 and above believe they’re not likely to be susceptible to a financial scam, despite nearly all seniors (97 percent) acknowledging that older people are very or somewhat susceptible to becoming a victim. When asked about their peers, the poll found that 47 percent of all seniors knew someone who had already fallen victim to a scam.

“The results indicate what most of us want -the ability to age relatively unaffected from the realities associated with aging,” says Dr. Marti DeLiema, a gerontologist and consultant for Wells Fargo’s Aging Client Services. “The problem is that when someone doesn’t feel they’re at risk, they’re unlikely to take precaution.”
