SMASH STEM PROGRAM LAUNCHING IN ILLINOIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IIT AND SIU CARBONDALE SMASH, the signature STEM education program of the Kapor Center, recently announced SMASH Illinois, its first statewide initiative program partnership with Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and the Creating Pathways and Access for Student Success (CPASS) Foundation. Through university partnerships, SMASH provides a three-year, free-of-cost, residential college preparatory program targeting high school students from traditionally underrepresented communities interested in pursuing STEM careers.

SMASH is dedicated to closing the gap for students of color in STEM. Through this state-wide initiative, the SMASH Illinois consortium (SMASH, IIT, SIU and CPASS) hopes to provide the education, resources and access the students of Illinois deserve so they can pursue and persist in careers in tech and entrepreneurship, and become the future innovators and leaders that will uplift their communities. SMASH Illinois will run from July 6 to August 10.

GIFT OF HOPE ORGAN & TISSUE DONOR NETWORK RAISES THE BAR AND SETS NEW RECORDS FOR ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION In 2017, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network made history by offering a record number of people the opportunity to say “yes” to becoming organ and tissue donors. Those records were shattered in 2018, with a 67 percent increase in tissue donors and 14 percent increase in organ donors. Through the generosity of these organ and tissue donors, tens of thousands of people received lifesaving and life-enhancing transplants during 2018.

“While it’s easy for people to understand how donation benefits recipients, people forget that becoming an organ and tissue donor also benefits donor families,” said Kevin Cmunt, Gift of Hope president and chief executive officer. “Families take comfort in knowing their loved ones’ legacies don’t end with their death, but live on through the gift of donation. Thanks to our compassionate teams at Gift of Hope, we were able to offer the gift of donation to more than 10,000 in 2018.”

RUSH INTRODUCES INSULIN ACCESS FOR ALL BILL U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) recently introduced H.R.366, the Insulin Access for All Act of 2019. This bill, cosponsored by 33 members of the House Democratic Caucus, eliminates the cost sharing requirement under Medicare and Medicaid for insulin.

“This bill, introduced with significant cosponsors, addresses the appalling issue plaguing Americans who have one of the most devastating and debilitating diseases of modern times — diabetes. There are many who simply cannot afford the insulin they need to live longer, active, and productive lives. This legislation tackles that issue head on and ensures that those suffering from diabetes no longer have to pay out-of-pocket costs for insulin. No American should go without life-sustaining medication,” said Rush.

A study by The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal predicts that by 2030, 79 million adults with type 2 diabetes are expected to need insulin to manage their condition and if current levels of access remain, only half of them will be able to get an adequate supply.

At a recent Board of Trustees meeting for South Suburban College, special guest Mike Monaghan, executive director of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association, presented the Illinois Community College Trustees Association Service Award to Frank M. Zuccarelli for his accomplishments as board chairman for South Suburban College.

“The Illinois Community College Trustees Association would like to recognize Frank Zuccarelli for 40 years of dedicated service to the Board of South Suburban College, Community College District 510, and the Illinois Community College System,” said Monaghan at the meeting. “Of the more than 2,000 trustees to serve since 1965, Frank is one of only four still serving with 40 or more years of service. So this wasn’t by accident, this is all about his leadership.”

Since 1970, the Illinois Community College Trustees Association has provided legislative, advocacy, and educational opportunities for college boards. The Illinois

Community College Trustees Association is an organization whose constituents are the individual members of the local boards of trustees of each of the community college districts and is recognized by the Illinois Community College Board as the official advisory organization representing the trustees of the Illinois Community College System to the Illinois Community College Board, according to the Illinois Community College Trustees Association website.

For 40 years Zuccarelli, a South Holland resident, has served as a member of the South Suburban College Board of Trustees and he has been Board Chairman since 1987. Zuccarelli is also a former South Suburban College student and has always been committed to maintaining an affordable educational system for south suburban residents, according to a press release announcing the award.

Over time, Zuccarelli has helped to expand academic programs, establish tuition deferments, and build close transfer relationships with DePaul University, Governors State University, Chicago State University, and the University of St. Francis.

In addition to serving as board chairman of South Suburban College, Zuccarelli has also been serving as Thornton Township Supervisor since 1993, according to a press release announcing the award.

“I would like to thank Mr. Monaghan and the Illinois Community College Trustees Association for this honor and especially all of the faculty, staff, and administrators here now and through the years that I have had the privilege of serving with,” said Zuccarelli. “Our talented faculty is our best asset and they are what have kept me going here. All of us working together, that’s what makes it work and makes South Suburban College so special.”

This is not the first award that Zuccarelli has received from the Illinois Community College Trustees Association. He was previously honored with a Illinois Community College Trustees Association Service Award in 2014 that recognized his 35 years of service as a community college trustee, according to the South Suburban College website.

South Suburban College Dean Anna Helwig receives Recognition Award from District 228 South Suburban College’s Anna Helwig, Ph.D., Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) was presented with a Board Recognition Award from Bremen High School District 228 at their Students in Leadership Board Meeting recently.

According to the District, the award is intended to acknowledge individuals who have provided above and beyond service or assistance to its students.

“We presented Dr. Helwig with the award because we are very thankful for all that she has done to help build such an impactful partnership among our schools, and she has been critical in providing many new opportunities for District 228 students,” said Renee Mack, career readiness supervisor for BHSD 228. “Some of these opportunities include STEM Day, Manufacturing Day, the Robotics Olympics, and Dual Credit opportunities. She donated a 3-D printer on behalf of SSC to our IT staff and also trained our Industrial Tech teachers on programs using the College’s Maker Lab.” Dr. Helwig said she has enjoyed working collaboratively with District 228 to engage high school students in all of the technology opportunities that SSC’s provides, including its Manufacturing Lab, Maker’s Lab, CNC Lab – all housed at its Oak Forest Center (OFC) near BHSD 228 schools. She also serves as the lead contact for the District’s Alternative Education Program and has assisted in creating new college classes for DELTA students, now housed at the OFC. “It has been my pleasure working with the students of District 228 and alongside their outstanding teachers and administration,” said Dr. Helwig. “SSC looks forward to building new partnerships and seeing all of our students have great success in the years to come.”

District 148 grad receives Spirit of Kindness Award RIVERDALE – A Dolton West School District 148 graduate’s generosity and compassionate character has earned her a Spirit of Kindness Award.

The District presented Jayera Griffin with the award at the December 18, 2018 School Board Meeting.

The recognition follows Jayera’s recent donation of $1,000 toward school supplies and a wagon filled with book bags. The 15-year-old made the contribution to ensure all District 148 students have access to the supplies they need for school.

Jayera’s numerous and continuing selfless acts of kindness went public during the 2017-18 school year and last summer when she saved money and raised funds to host multiple Free Community Wash days at a local Laundromat. Her goal was to help fellow students, families and the community. Her crusade generated widespread attention and additional donations toward the cause.

The Washington Junior High

School Class of 2018 Valedictorian went on to sponsor fellow teens from neighboring communities to attend training and receive First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.

She and her parents, Michael Griffin and Tanya Williams, also are currently involved in a local club that sponsors weekly free skate days for youngsters at the Glenwood Roller Rink.

“Jayera’s true acts of kindness have a profound impact on our students and our community. She is a courageous young lady destined to make a difference in the lives of everyone she meets,” said District 148 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kevin J. Nohelty.

District 148 serves approximately 2,200 students and their families in sections of Dolton, Riverdale, Harvey and South Holland. The District has one early childhood center, six elementary schools and three junior high schools.

January is National Blood Donor Month January is a time to celebrate generous volunteer donors and raise awareness for the need for blood donations. It is also a month often plagued by snowstorms and seasonal illness that result in low donor turnout at blood drives and force many to delay giving, and this year is no different.

Just recently, blood drives were canceled in several states from the Midwest to the East Coast due to Winter Storm Gia, contributing to already low inventory levels. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports wide spread influenza across nearly half the country and cases of the flu occurring in nearly all 50 states.

“During the winter months, snow storms, icy road conditions and seasonal illness like the flu often cause blood donors to delay their donations,” said Chris Hrouda, president, Red Cross Blood Services. “This further exasperates our already depleted blood supply from over the holidays. We are working every day to restock hospitals shelves with lifesaving blood products for patients and right now, we need all healthy, eligible individuals to give blood and platelets as soon as possible to ensure we can meet patient needs.”

The American Red Cross recently issued an emergency call for blood and platelet donors to give now and help mitigate a blood shortage. With holiday scheduling keeping donors busy, the Red Cross collected about 27,000 fewer blood and platelet donations during the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s than needed.

Donors are being encouraged to help patients like Luna Giles all year long. At the young age of one and half years-old, Luna is already a princess warrior. In her first year of life, she had two heart surgeries that required over a dozen blood transfusions.

Luna will likely need more blood products for an additional surgery in her future.

“Each time, the nurse would bring in a bag of blood for her transfusion, I noticed a small label on each one that said,

They may never know it, but to me, they are heroes.”

To pay it forward, the Giles family holds blood drives in the community in honor of Luna and other patients.

“Luna’s story is a reminder of the constant need for blood.

People would ask me how they could help and I would tell them to go give blood.”

Luna is not alone in her need for lifesaving blood products.

Patients rely on blood and platelets every day for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease. Blood products are perishable, and the only source of lifesaving blood for patients is volunteer blood donors.

Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Donors can help even more people by inviting a family member, friend or co-worker to donate too.

Host a blood drive in the community During the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s, about 1,350 fewer blood drives were also hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs. With more than 80 percent of blood donations made at blood drives organized by volunteer sponsor groups and coordinators, more hosts are needed to hold blood drives in the months ahead.

Right now, the Red Cross is urging people across the country, especially type O, to schedule an appointment to give. Eligible individuals can make a donation appointment by simply downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767).

Randstad US identifies 8 work trends to watch this year Randstad US recently released their annual expert predictions outlining the trends and changes 2019 will bring to the world of work. Randstad executives and other leaders from the human resources services industry shared key insights for employers facing complex challenges, from employees' changing work preferences to the pressure to stay digitally relevant in a technology-saturated landscape.

The AFD Funeral Director of the Year runner up award was presented in New Orleans, Louisiana. Brookins accepted the award on behalf of her family and community where in 2018, she presented over $14,000 in scholarships and grants to youth and youth focused organizations, coordinated an annual community health fair, hosted the annual Brookins summer music concert series and neighborhood beautification awards. She is a strong advocate for residents in the city’s 21st Ward where she volunteers and supports many causes that promote community well-being.

This year, Brookins plans to continue her work and expand upon the community service she has already been doing.

“We’re excited to kick off another year of providing scholarships, hosting our annual health fair and music series, and beautification awards. Our goal is to make sure our community shows its strength and receives the services it deserves. There are so many people who care about our youth, our seniors and just as important, our economic growth and stability. I’m thankful and excited that my family can be part of making a difference,” she said.

Martin Luther King’s influence resonates in Illinois

“He would have been 90 this year,” says the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.

Jackson was reflecting on this year’s holiday honoring his mentor and friend.

Jan. 15 was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, celebrated nationally on Jan. 21.

As the years go by, there are fewer of those who marched with him to share their memories. But Jackson, one of his closest aides, can still recount milestone moments from King’s Chicago Freedom Movement of 1965-66 like it was yesterday.

“Our offices used to be at 366 E. 47th St., in what’s now Bronzeville, and we used to meet every Saturday morning at Chicago Theological Seminary,” says Jackson, 77, who first met the man of peace at an airport in 1964, when King was en route to pick up his Nobel Peace Prize.

Jackson then marched with King in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches.

He soon joined the team of the charismatic civil rights leader and was assigned to run Operation Breadbasket, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s anti-poverty effort.

When the Baptist preacher who espoused nonviolence brought the fight for equal rights north to Chicago, Jackson was at his side. Here are significant events involving King in Chicago. l Chicago churches still standing today were the sites of their strategizing meetings, including Fellowship Baptist Church, 4543 S. Princeton Ave.; New Friendship Baptist Church, 848 W 71st St.; and Stone Temple Baptist Church, 3622 W. Douglas Blvd. l There was King’s June 21, 1964 speech at the Illinois Rally for Civil Rights at Soldier Field, days after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed.

Then, after being asked by the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations to come help Black Chicago fight for quality schools, King led a July 26, 1965 march on City Hall; gave a fiery speech before tens of thousands at the July 10, 1966, Freedom Sunday Rally at Soldier Field; and on Aug. 26, 1966, held a globally covered “Summit Agreement” with Mayor Richard J. Daley. l As part of his “End Slums” campaign, King famously moved his family into a dilapidated, thirdfloor walk-up at 1550 S. Hamlin Ave. in North

Lawndale on Jan. 1, 1966, the building is long gone but the Dr. King Legacy Apartments and Fair Housing Exhibit Center now marks the spot. l King’s open housing marches, and the attendant violence from angry residents on the Southwest Side, are most remembered, culminating with the infamous Aug. 5, 1966, march through Marquette Park, where the Baptist preacher was felled to the knee by a rock to the head, lending credence to his famous quote: “I have never seen, even in Mississippi and Alabama, mobs as hateful as I’ve seen here in Chicago.”

“When King came to Chicago, we couldn’t live west of Ashland, and blacks were hemmed into these ghettos,” Jackson says, taking a reporter down memory lane.

Born Jan. 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Ga., King was ordained and became assistant pastor at his father’s Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1948. He married the beautiful Coretta Scott King in 1953, with whom he had four children.

It was in 1955 that his civil rights efforts began in earnest, when he became president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the group that led the 13-month Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. It ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling segrega-

South Suburban Mayor Hosts Arctic Dip Fundraiser

The Village of Homewood recently hosted the Mayor’s Arctic Dip fundraiser to honor the one year anniversary of the Village of Homewood Mayor, Richard Hofeld’s, rescue from a frozen pond he fell into while trying to retrieve his dog.

Proceeds from the fundraiser were donated to the South Suburban Humane Society.

About a year ago, Mayor Hofeld went onto the frozen lake at the Izaak Walton Preserve in Homewood to get his dog and as he tried to do that, the ice under him broke and he went into the water himself.

“I was in the water for about 20 minutes treading water. I did manage to get the dog out. I flipped her out and she is a 100-pound lab so don’t ask me how I ever did that but nevertheless, she was fine. A jogger came by after about 20 minutes and called 911 and the fire department came and sent a diver in and pulled me out,” said Hofeld.

Overall, both Hofeld and his dog were fine but the event made the local news. Hofeld said he was approached by a local law firm that wanted to commemorate the anniversary of his rescue and he agreed. From there, the idea for the Mayor’s Arctic Dip came to be.

Several swimming pools were set up outside Martin Avenue Square and registered participants were invited to take an icy dip. Many participants dressed in costumes and brought

pool noodles, snorkels, and goggles to make the event more fun.

“We did the reenactment on dry land in pools rather than down at the lake where I had gone in.

The fire department frowned upon doing it down there again,” said Hofeld. “I went in this time wading through the water instead of being up to my neck in it and the bright side to all of this is that the Human Society raised over $7,000.”

The South Suburban Humane Society, located at 1103 West End Ave. in Chicago Heights, is dedicated to promoting the well-being of pets and the people who love them in the Metro Chicago region, according to their website.

“Being a dog lover like so many people are, when I had gone in the water it was to rescue my dog and all of my black labs are rescues and over the years, I have had at least a dozen. This is a very worth-while organization and they save animals and they do good things with them by feeding them and housing them and that’s why I chose them,” said Hofeld.

Because of the first event's great success, it is Mayor Hofeld’s intention to make the Mayor’s Arctic Dip an annual event in the Village of Homewood.

“It was so well received and it was gratifying to see so many people enjoying themselves as they plunged into the cold water in 20-degree weather. Everyone had a good time,” said Hofeld.

Sam’s Club Officially Opens It’s Doors As Part Of Their Return To The Village Of Matteson

Matteson, Ill – On Thursday, Jan. 17, Sheila Chalmers-Currin, Village President of Matteson, welcomed the return of Sam’s Club back to the Village of Matteson as they officially opened their doors to the public. However the membership-only retail warehouse giant has not returned in the same form. Sam’s Club has developed and presented to the public it’s second world class Distribution and E-commerce Fulfillment Center right here in the Village of Matteson.

In January of 2018, the national corporation announced the closure of it’s Matteson retail store on Cicero Avenue. However President Chalmers-Currin directed her administrators to revisit the issue with Sam’s Club representatives in effort to return the major corporation back to Matteson.

After numerous conference calls and on site visits, the sides were able to reach an accord.

“It is no secret that Sam’s Club has been greatly missed. However our mission has always been to not only sustain and attract new businesses, but to also recruit diverse models of economic development. Sam’s Club embraced our vision during renegotiations” says Mayor Chalmers Currin.

Chalmers-Currin adds, “In addition to our recent announcement of the $280 Million Dollar redevelopment of Lincoln Mall to an all new MixUse development; this Sam’s Distribution Center coincides perfectly with the new shopping trends of consumers. This is not only a homerun for Matteson, but the entire Southland region.”

The Distribution Center is Sam’s Club’s second such development. Earlier this year the company opened its very first Distribution Center in

Memphis, Tennessee. The development comes at a time of growth and investment in the company’s Omni-channel shopping experience. Recently the company announced free shipping on most items for it’s Plus members. In the first quarter of 2018, Sam’s Club witnessed online sales increase of 25% in which they also saw a 5.2% comp sales increase (excluding fuel and tobacco).

Mayor Chalmers-Currin adds, “Though warehouse-based retailers such as Sam’s Club have a revenue stream fueled by member fees; they also have to adjust to an environment in which customers now buy groceries, electronics and other products from a growing array of e-commerce stores. All of which makes this much anticipated Grand Opening of this Fulfillment Center a significant step forward.”

Illinois State Representative Debbie Meyers-Martin adds, “Once again Matteson has proven that a community can flourish through diverse forms of economic development. Along with the announcement of the redevelopment of Lincoln Mall, this new ecommerce facility fits into Mayor Chalmers-Currin vision maintaining a vibrant economic base for Matteson.”

“The days of clipping coupons may be out of style, but finding ways to save money never is,” says Michael McAuliffe, president of Family Credit Management. “From in-store apps to price trackers, new tech tools can help.”

The experts at Family Credit Management are encouraging consumers to research their moneysaving options, as technology is always evolving.

To get you started, they have narrowed down a few tech-savvy ways to streamline and save.

• Browser Extensions: Whether you use Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox as your internet browser, there are sites you can visit to add an extension to your searching power. It’s like adding an additional search box which will know to look for the best deals out there whenever you are shopping online and compare prices side-by-side, cutting out some of the legwork for you. Some well-known examples are PriceBlink, The Camelizer and InvisibleHand.

• Coupon Apps: Mobile apps such as Coupon Sherpa, SnipSnap and Yowza, enable you to scan items while you’re in-store and find the best value coupons on the spot.

• Price Drop Alert Trackers: Don’t make the mistake of assuming Amazon is the be-all-and-end-all for saving. Prices drop all the time. But, how can you keep track of who is dropping them and when?

With a tracker app, you can tell the app what to look for and it will notify you when your wanted items drop in price. IFTTT (If This Then That), camelcamelcamel and Price Tracker for Amazon will keep an eye on prices for you to make sure you’re the first to see the best deals.

• Credit Card Points/Discounts: Credit cards can encourage overspending, but when used carefully and within budget, offer certain advantages. For example, store-specific credit cards often offer special discounts, kickbacks and coupons for cardholders. Just think how you could double up on the savings by using some of the above tools, as well as by purchasing with a card with added bonuses.

Remember though, that any savings you earn will quickly be eaten up if you pay interest charges. To avoid this trap, never use a credit card unless you can pay the entire balance in full each month. Also, think very carefully about opening a new account, as this can negatively affect your credit.
