STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN PRESTIGIOUS DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY AT WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT One hundred teens from across the nation participated in Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and Essence magazine -- a four-day, immersive and transformational mentoring program at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida which concluded this weekend.

The 100 students were selected from thousands of applicants nationwide for this once-in-a-lifetime mentoring program that is designed to assist them in identifying and pursuing their dreams. The students, along with a parent or guardian, received an all-expensepaid trip to Disney to participate in the program, which features a series of career-oriented workshops and leadership seminars. Celebrity participants include Sunny Hostin from ABC’s “The View,” television personality Steve Harvey, national recording artist Ne-Yo, former NFL great and “Dancing with the Stars’’ winner Emmitt Smith and actors Jussie Smollett (Fox’s “Empire’’), Miles Brown (ABC’s “Black-ish’’) and Marsai Martin (ABC’s “Black-ish’’).

ILLINOIS STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S HIGH SCHOOL MOCK TRIAL INVITATIONAL TO TAKE PLACE IN CHAMPAIGN Teams from 41 high schools throughout the state will participate in the 36th annual Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) High School Mock Trial Invitational on March 24 and 25, 2018, at the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign. The top eight teams will compete in the final round on March 25, for the state championship. The winner will represent Illinois at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Each team tries both sides – plaintiff and defense – of a hypothetical case developed by the ISBA Committee.

This year’s case is Grant v Smith, a civil suit alleging the use of excessive force during an arrest. Students will assume the roles of attorneys and witnesses, and a panel of Illinois lawyers and judges, along with members of the ISBA Law Related Education Committee, will evaluate and score the students’ performances. The students must also take a written test about the issues of the case and basic legal principles.

otham Greens recently broke ground on a new 140,000 square foot indoor farm in Pullman. Once completed the state-of-the-art facility will be the largest greenhouse in Chicago and provide several new jobs for the community. The new greenhouse will be located near Gotham Green’s existing rooftop greenhouse on top of the Method soap factory on 111th St. Gotham Greens originated in New York and is a worldwide pioneer in the field of urban agriculture and a leading regional producer of hyper-local, premium-quality, greenhouse-grown vegetables and herbs, according to the Gotham Greens website. They currently have four facilities in New York and Chicago.

Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI), a local nonprofit, has partnered with Gotham Greens to develop this project. CNI was involved with helping create the original rooftop garden on the Method soap factory which Gotham Greens quickly grew out of. The new facility with double their growing capacity, according to David Doig, president of CNI. Over the course of the last year or so they have realized that they already maxed out their growing capacity on the rooftop. They approached us about expanding and building another greenhouse and they looked at some different sites and ultimately settled on Pullman. Mostly because they already had a facility here and they had such a great

experience working with the community and finding local talent that they wanted to stay here in Pullman,” said Doig.

At their initial rooftop greenhouse, Gotham Greens was able to hire around 60 people from the Pullman community, the expansion will allow them to her 60 more and they are committed to giving opportunities to community members, according to Doig.

“These are generally kind of starter, low-skill jobs so you don’t have to have a masters degree or even a college education to work at Gotham Greens. A lot of their employees are young people and kids from the community and this is really their first job. It’s a great opportunity to get folks into the workforce and get them some training and job experience,” said Doig.

Doig explained that CNI worked as the site developer for this project, as they have with many other development projects on the south side of Chicago. CNI took on the responsibility of developing the land for this project.

“We develop all of the land, we do all of the underground utilities, the environmental work, we do all of the mass grading, we do the site prep and then basically we turn over the finished pad-ready site to Gotham Greens and they develop the verticals and they own the real estate,” said Doig.

CNI has been involved in developing most of the recent projects in Pullman like the Planet Fitness, Walmart, and a new Whole Foods distribution center. Doig said the organization will continue to do high-impact real estate projects that bring economic opportunity and jobs to Chicago.

PepsiCo Builds A Pathway To Employment With City Colleges Of Chicago

ity Colleges of Chicago and PepsiCo recently announced their new partnership to offer students a pathway to careers as merchandisers, warehouse personnel, commercial truck drivers and machine maintenance technicians and mechanics. PepsiCo committed to providing up to 40 jobs annually to students from Olive-Harvey College and Richard J. Daley College Additionally, PepsiCo will offer scholarships to help eliminate the barrier of cost as students pursue a college education. Olive Harvey College and Daley College will include PepsiCo-specific training in their curriculum to prepare students for job interviews and the company screening process at PepsiCo, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago and PepsiCo. “Our focus at City Colleges is www.thechicagocitizen.com

First Black Female Astronaut, One Of Many Who Inspire Chicago Youth

n 1987, Mae Jemison was selected for the NASA astronaut program. Jemison grew up on the South Side of Chicago and had a background in engineering and medical research, she had also just returned from a two-year tour in the Peace Corps where she worked as a Medical Officer in Sierra Leone and Liberia, according to her biography from NASA. On Sept. 12, 1992, Jemison became the first African American woman in the world to enter outer space. On an eight-day mission on the Endeavor Jemison served as the science mission specialist and logged 190 hours, 30 minutes, and 23 seconds in space, according to NASA “My favorite memory I have is of the shuttle launching. It shakes and rattles until the solid rocket boosters come out, I remember having this huge grin on my face. About two hours after we got in orbit I looked out the window and no kidding, the first thing I saw from space was Chicago. I thought about that girl who grew up in Chicago who would have been just real cheesed up. The perspective that stuck with me is that I am as much a part of this universe as any speck of stardust,” said Jemison in a documentary created by MAKERS, a feminist

media brand.

Jemison is not the only notable women in a space science that inspires girls in Chicago. For fifteen years, The Adler Planetarium has hosted an annual Women in Space Science event to recognize trailblazing women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)

and inspiring young women to pursue careers in these disciplines, according to the Adler Planetarium.

“We invite approximately 250 middle school students, primarily from Chicago public schools, to come and spend the afternoon with us. They come to the planetarium and during

their two hours here they hear the honoree speak about her job, and her background, and why she chose to pursue a STEM career and why it’s an option for everyone,” said Kelly Borden, Director of Teen Programs at the Adler Planetarium.

It is important to highlight women in STEM careers because it is a field with little female representation. If young girls who enjoy science can’t find any female professionals to look up to, their passions could be lost, according to Borden.

“Something that we hear over and over again is that representation matters and it’s incredibly true. We want our young people at the Adler to see themselves in the STEM professionals that they interact with,” said Borden.

This is something that Jemison provided for the world that had never existed before, a black female astronaut the little girls could look up to.

“If you are a young girl in Chicago interested in a STEM career you are very fortunate because there is a wealth of programs that you can access and opportunities that you could have never dreamed possible,” said Borden.

New biography sheds light on religious influences on iconic jazz songstress Billie Holiday

S

oulful jazz singer Billie Holiday is remembered today for her unique sound, troubled personal history, and a catalogue that includes such resonant songs as “Strange Fruit” and “God Bless the Child.” Holiday and her music were also strongly

shaped by religion, often in surprising ways. This April, Penn State University Press will release Tracy Fessenden’s Religion Around Billie Holiday, a compelling new book that examines the spiritual and religious forces that left their mark on the performer during her short but influential life.

Mixing elements of biography with the history of race and American music, Tracy Fessenden explores the multiple religious influences on Holiday’s life and sound, including her time spent as a child in a Baltimore convent, the echoes of black Southern churches in the blues she encountered in brothels, the secular riffs on ancestral faith in the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance, and the Jewish songwriting culture of Tin Pan Alley. Religion Around Billie Holiday will be released on April 7th, the 103rd anniversary of Billie Holiday’s birth.

Whenever you begin to feel fearful, remind yourself of the things that really matter to you and be grateful for them. PepsiCo is one of the nations largest food and beverage companies.

They own product brands like Quaker, Tropicana, Gatorade, Frito-Lay, and Pepsi-Cola. Their interest in collaborating with City Colleges of Chicago comes from a long-time presence in Chicago operating a manufacturing facility on 51st St. in Bridgeview, having a large distribution center on 35th St., and management offices in West Loop and Schaumburg, according to a press release from City Colleges of Chicago and PepsiCo. PepsiCo wanted to listen to the needs of the community they are occupying and help where they could, according to a representative from PepsiCo.

“At the core of who we are is our fundamental belief of ‘Performance with Purpose’ which says that our success is intrinsically tied to our ability to be responsive to the needs of our society. Training Chicago students is simply our commitment to invest in the community where we do business and where our employees live,” said a representative from PepsiCo. After talking with community leaders and learning that there was a challenge with unemployment in the area, PepsiCo turned to City Colleges of Chicago to build a pathway to employment, according to PepsiCo. “Realizing PepsiCo regularly requires the unique skill-set of persons trained in the areas of Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics along with Advanced Manufacturing Maintenance within the Chicagoland area, we turned to the City Colleges of Chicago, specifically Olive-Harvey College and

Illinoisans pick ‘Blues Brothers’ as top movie SPRINGFIELD – Illinoisans have chosen

“The Blues Brothers” as the top movie in state history, embracing a film that celebrates car crashes, classic songs, Chicago landmarks and two shady characters trying desperately to do the right thing.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “A League of Their Own” came next in the online voting, which was part of the Illinois Top 200 project.

The project lets Illinoisans vote every two weeks on the best movies, most inspiring leaders, greatest books, top businesses and much more. By the state’s 200th birthday on Dec. 3, voters will have chosen 10 favorites in 20 different categories – the Illinois Top 200.

More than 1,500 people voted on the top movies. Voting in the next category, top businesses, is underway at www.IllinoisTop200. com.

“I’m a big fan of all three of the top movies, so I’m thrilled by the results. More importantly,

Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation partner to remount Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks CHICAGO – The Chicago

International Puppet Theater Festival and the Poetry Foundation are partnering to present Manual Cinema’s No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks, oneweekend-only, March 30 and 31 at Chicago’s historic Studebaker Theater, 410 S. Michigan Avenue, in Chicago’s Fine Arts Building.

Performances of Manual Cinema’s unforgettable multi-media retelling of Brooks’s life and work are Friday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 31 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $25; $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased in advance online at chicagopuppetfest.org.

No Blue Memories: The Life of Gwendolyn Brooks combines poetry, puppetry and live jazz to bring to life the story of one of Chicago’s most beloved figures. Gwendolyn Brooks was an icon, a poet laureate, and a Pulitzer Prize winner—but she was also a treasured educator and mentor to the countless writers and children who knew her as their very own “Miss Brooks.” Weaving poetry, storytelling, sound design, original live music, and striking visuals, No Blue Memories is an exploration of

Brooks’s beloved city and a story of how she navigated identity, craft, and politics over the course of one of the most remarkable careers in American literary history.

The Poetry Foundation commissioned Manual Cinema in 2016 to visually represent the life and work of Gwendolyn Brooks in a way that would be accessible for new fans and enticing for Brooks appreciators alike. The resulting production, No Blue Memories, received its world premiere in November 2017, what would have been Brooks’s hundredth year.

The 70-minute show combines intricate paper puppetry, live actors working in shadow, and an original score played live on stage. The script was co-written by Chicago poets Eve L. Ewing and Nate Marshall.

The music was commissioned from Jamila Woods and Ayanna Woods, who were granted permission from the Brooks estate for the first time to write a song using Brooks’s famous poem “We Real Cool.” The production also samples many of Brooks’s most memorable poems including “Eventide,” Beverly Hills, Chicago,” “Speech to the Young, Speech to the Progress Toward,” and “Chicago Picasso.”
