2 news Assessor’s Office Refunds $15 Million To Cook County Neighborhoods In figures released today, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi announced the collection of more than $15 million dollars over the past three years from people receiving tax exemptions for which they were not eligible. The office collected the funds from taxpayers who did not meet the state eligibility requirements and from estates of those who were recently deceased. Of the $5.1 million collected in 2021, $3.5 million was refunded back to communities in Cook County to pay for services such as schools, parks, libraries, and first responders. “As the Cook County Assessor, one of my most important jobs is to ensure property tax savings exemptions only go to those who qualify,” said Assessor Kaegi. “Since the beginning of my administration, our Erroneous Exemptions Investigations Department has done this work at no cost to Cook County taxpayers.

Automatic renewals of exemptions over the last two years helped ease the administrative burden on homeowners during the height of the pandemic. To ensure that only qualified households received property tax savings, the Erroneous Investigation Exemption (EEI). Department conducted extensive audits. As a result of these audits, the EEI department recovered more than $1.4 million over the past three years, including more than 300 exemptions that would have otherwise been received on behalf of deceased individuals.

Since Assessor Kaegi took office in 2019, the Erroneous Exemptions Investigations department has operated at a surplus at no cost to Cook County taxpayers. The cost of salaries and investigations conducted by the department is paid through late fees and penalties charged to those who received exemptions for which they were not qualified. Common findings are households that no longer meet the income requirements or receive exemptions on dual properties. Any surplus funds are used to pay for the operations of the department in the following year.

Automatic renewal of exemptions will be granted again this year and the EEI department will continue its rigorous audits to ensure that only those who qualify continue to receive exemptions. In March and April, homeowners who may no longer qualify for exemptions will be mailed letters informing them that they must reapply. In the event that a homeowner discovers that they are no longer eligible, they can also fill out a waiver form, removing the exemption.

Foot Locker, Inc and LISC announce funding for 16 organizations NEW YORK PRNewswire -- Foot Locker, Inc., through the Foot Locker Foundation, and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) have announced grant funding for nonprofit community organizations that empower youth in Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities.

Known as the Foot Locker Foundation Community Empowerment Program, the $3 million joint effort was announced last year to bridge gaps driven by racial inequity and promote youth empowerment and community wellness—all while supporting community-based organizations led by people of color.

For both LISC and Foot Locker, Inc., this funding is part of larger national efforts focused on economic opportunity and racial equity. The program draws from Foot Locker, Inc.’s $200 million commitment to its Leading Education and Economic Development (LEED) initiative, which is focused on fueling education and economic opportunity within the Black community. It also connects to LISC’s Project 10X strategy to break down systemic barriers and support racial justice.

In this first round of funding of $1.26 million, LISC and Foot Locker, Inc. identified 16 high-impact programs across 12 metro areas. A second round of funding is planned for spring 2022.

“Creating a more equitable future begins with meaningful investments at the community level,” said Richard Johnson, chairman and CEO of Foot Locker, Inc. “For too long, community organizations led by people of color and the youth they serve have been underinvested in and overlooked. Through LEED and the Community Empowerment Program, we are providing local nonprofits the tools

The funded programs range from construction training for young adults to after-school programming for middle school kids to social-emotional counseling for teens.

The 16 organizations funded by the Community Empowerment Program have been awarded grants ranging from $25,000-$100,000 each, depending on the programs being supported. ILLINOIS TOLLWAY AWARDS $7.7 MILLION IN CONTRACTS FOR CONSTRUCTION IN JANUARY DOWNERS GROVE, IL – The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors today approved two construction contracts totaling $7.7 million at its January Board meeting for work included in the Tollway’s $1.49 billion capital spending commitment for 2022.

“Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our agency is continuing on track in our delivery of the Move Illinois capital program as we begin 2022,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director José Alvarez. “The Tollway remains in a strong position to continue to deliver critical investments into our regional infrastructure and economy.”

January construction contracts awarded include: • A $5.5 million contract to K-Five Construction Co., Westmont, IL, for systemwide pavement repairs.

• A $2.2 million contract to Enlight Contracting, Chicago, IL, for water main construction on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Mile Long Bridge.

The January contracts approved today include one contractor and six subcontractors that are certified as disadvantaged, minority- and women-owned business enterprise (D/M/WBE) firms, as well as two subcontractors that are certified veteran-owned firms. Commitments for D/M/WBE participation range from 23.80 percent to 55.09 percent per contract and commitments for veteran participation range from 2.59 percent to 3.34 percent per contract.

The Tollway’s 2022 Capital Program calls for investing $1.49 billion with $296.8 million budgeted for systemwide roadway and bridge repairs to keep the existing Tollway system in good repair, along with funding for key projects including: • $439.9 million to continue planning and construction for the new I-490 Tollway and new interchanges connecting to the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90), Tri-State Tollway (I-294), the Illinois Route 390 Tollway, as well as providing direct access in and out of O’Hare International Airport as part of the Elgin O’Hare Western Access Project.

• $690.1 million to continue design and reconstruction work for the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) Project.

• $46.2 million to complete construction of the I-294/I-57 Interchange.

Approval of the January contracts marks the start of the 11th year of the 15-year, $14 billion Move Illinois

Program. Overall, more than $9.4 billion has been invested by the Tollway since the program began in 2012, with more than $2.4 billion of that total committed to small, diverse and veteran-owned firms. veteran-owned firms. In addition, the capital program has created or sustained an estimated 105,240 total jobs as of December 2021.

Construction contracts for Illinois Tollway projects are competitively bid under the rules of the Illinois Procurement Code. All contracts are presented to the Illinois Tollway Board of Directors for review and approval.

GARY, Ind.—The proposed state takeover of the Gary public schools is a terrible example of lawmakers more interested in a power grab than actually working with educators and community to make beneficial improvements, the president of the Gary Teachers Union will testify at a House hearing Thursday.

The House Education Committee will hold a hearing Thursday on HB 1187, which would create a permanent state-appointed advisory school board for the Gary Community School Corporation and would prohibit the existence of a teachers union and ban collective bargaining.

“Let’s be clear: state takeovers are a harmful power grab devoid of actual ideas or plans to improve schools. Takeovers have failed in city after city because their focus is on taking away the voices of local education officials, educators and parents, not investing in proven programs, services and funding to truly move the needle,” said GTU President GlenEva Dunham.

Use 1/4-cup measuring cup to divide mixture evenly into prepared muffin cups.

Bake 16-18 minutes until eggs are set. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
