IDOC OPENS MURPHYSBORO LIFE SKILLS RE-ENTRY CENTER MURPHYSBORO, IL - The Illinois Department of
Corrections opened its second Life-Skills Re-entry Center recently, aimed at helping offenders learn skills that will be critical to their success upon release. The first 20 offenders were transferred to the Murphysboro Life Skills Re-entry Center, in Murphysboro, IL recently. They’ll go through an orientation process and get acclimated to the new facility before starting educational, job readiness, and cognitive behavior therapy courses. They will also learn skills that help them readjust to society - like how to manage a bank account, use the latest technology, and schedule medical appointments. “Our goal is to help build a strong foundation and stop the revolving door to prison,” said IDOC Director John Baldwin. “We’re improving outcomes for the men and women in our custody. When they return to their communities with the skills needed to reintegrate successfully, they will be better parents, better neighbors and better citizens overall.” Offenders who have one to four years left on their sentence qualify for placement at the Life Skills Re-entry Centers.

Blue Island Recovery Home Celebrates 30 Years of Operation BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
G
uildhaus, a licensed non-profit men’s recovery home and halfway house in Blue Island, is celebrating it’s 30 year anniversary on April 26 at the Beverly Country Club. The night will begin at 6 p.m. and feature Neil Steinberg, a journalist with the Chicago Sun Times, as the guest speaker along with a silent auction and raffle. Founded in 1987 by Jack King, a retired Chicago firefighter, Guildhaus has been able to treat 15,000 men who suffer from addiction and alcoholism, according to information provided by Guildhaus. “There is no magic that happens here. It’s just showing up and buying into the fact that you’re powerless over your addiction. If you can feed into that and really buy into it, that’s half your problem solved right there. Then there are a bunch of steps after that to continue to work on yourself because in order to stay sober, you have to change and that doesn’t happen overnight,” said Kevin Lavin, executive director of Guildhaus. Today, Lavin is the executive director of Guildhaus, but if you were to look back in time, you could see him as a recovering alcoholic sleeping on the couch at the recovery home on Canal St. in Blue Island. “There was no other place on the South Side that had a halfway house so Jack King started this place in 87. I actually slept on a couch right in the front room because there were no www.thechicagocitizen.com
beds at the time,” said Lavin. Staying active, remaining grateful for successful treatment, and giving back to help others suffering from addiction is the key to maintaining sobriety, according to Lavin. “I love this job because I’m able to give back what was given to me,” said Lavin. “If a guy comes in here and stays for 90 to 120 days the odds of him relapsing are down to about 44 percent,” said Lavin. Over the last 30 years as the nature of addiction has changed Guildhaus has also adapted to make sure that they are able to provide the best treatment for their residents, according to Lavin. “From 1987 to 1997 residents were predominately white and predominantly alcoholics. From 1995 to 2006, the demographics were different, it was more integrated, and drugs were a major factor. The crack epidemic hit the south side of Chicago and really the state and the country. We went from mostly alcoholics to crack,” said Lavin. “There wasn’t really a big spotlight on it because it was an inner-city thing and no one seemed to really care, but when the opiate epidemic hit and heroine, now all of a sudden people care.” One thing that has never changed is the safe space that exists at Guildhaus and allows all addicts, no matter their dependency, to find the support they need to recover. Young Black Professionals, HBCU Students Join Movement for Homeownership BY HAZEL TRICE EDNEY
(TriceEdneyWire.com) - The housing crisis that caused more than nine million people to suffer foreclosure and even homelessness due to the economic slump across the U. S. 10 years ago, has now fully recovered for everyone - except people of color - especially African-Americans. “Black people are moving into homeownership at a much slower rate than anything we have seen in the past,” says Laurie Goodman, co-author of an Urban Institute report titled, “Are Gains in Black Home Ownership History?” The report, released last year, continues, “Gains in black homeownership have been hard won, which amplifies our concern that in the last 15 years, black homeownership rates have declined to levels not seen since the 1960s, when private race-based discrimination was legal.” This is the reason that homeownership advocates and advisers believe new and innovative ways must be attempted to bring about equality in homeownership in 2018 and beyond. In part, that means a targeted effort to bring young Black professionals, namely new college graduates, into the financial education arena and the home buying job market - ideas whose times have come, according to HomeFree-USA, a non-profit organization that specializes in mortgage and homeownership advice. “Most people, when they think about working in a financial institution; they think about the branch or being a teller. But, there’s a whole machine, one in which you can really build a good career. So they are interested,” says Gwendolyn Garnett, program director for the new Center for Financial Advancement (CFA) that HomeFree-USA launched on the campus of Fisk University in Nashville last September. “Awareness and education afford them opportunities whether they are jobs or internships. So they can learn more about the industry and choose to become a part of it,” says Garnett, former Neighborhood Lending executive for the Consumer Real Estate division of Bank of America. People may simply not know the benefits and tremendous value of preparing for mortgage approval, says Marcia Griffin, president//CEO of HomeFree-USA. “It is critical for us. Yet, more AfricanAmericans are becoming renters than they are home owners. Homeownership is our primary wealth building tool. But it’s also a personal tool. It’s a life tool that enables us to provide something to leave for our children, to have a life in which you are paying yourself instead of paying the landlord,” Griffin says. “I often use this as an example: If you’re paying a thousand dollars a month rent and you rent for 10 years, conservatively you’re talking about a hundred and twenty thousand dollars
that you’ve paid to somebody else. No benefit at all.” She also pointed out that rents often go up whereas a fixed rate mortgage stays the same. “This is just a wealth building tool that must be promoted,” Griffin said. In the three decades after the Fair Housing Act, signed into law in 1968, America’s Black homeownership grew nearly 6 percentage points, the Urban Institute report said. But, according to Forbes, “from 2000 to 2015, that gain dropped to about 41 percent, compared to White homeownership of 71 percent.” The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) sees a glimmer of hope as NAREB has detected a slight upward movement in Black home ownership rates. HomeFree-USA is pushing to increase that trend by empowering students with the financial education that they will then spread among each other as well as to parents and ultimately into the community. A core principal of the CFA is that the more African-Americans are involved in the lending and mortgage business, the more buyers they will attract. They hope this will result in a significant spike in the housing industry as it relates to African-Americans in general; including African-American youth. “I agree that yes, whether you’re AfricanAmerican or Hispanic, those ethnic groups are comfortable dealing with people who look like them. And I think that’s the case not only for homeownership but a host of other experiences and consumer decisions that we make,” says Jeffrey Hicks, NAREB president/ CEO. Prospective salaries may serve as
enticements for young professionals. The annual salaries can range from an average of $75,900-$93,000 as a senior underwriter to $41,725-$135,000 as a loan officer and multiple opportunities in between according to mortgage industry salary listings. There are opportunities for even higher salaries when sales are involved. “Mortgage loan officer jobs are usually commission based. I know some who have made millions in this industry,” says Garnett, who worked for Bank of America for more than 24 years in various positions. “When you sell a home, when that person gets a home loan through you, you get a big commission from that...So you can make a good income, but a lot of young folks are not even aware of the industry.” The Center for Financial Advancement has launched on the heels of a recent study that says although more African-Americans than ever are going to college, Black students are still overrepresented in majors that result in the lowest paying jobs. “Access to college for African Americans has increased, but African Americans are highly concentrated in lower-paying majors,” says the 2016 study by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce. The report says “only 7 percent of finance and marketing majors are AfricanAmerican.” It also says that only 7 percent of those who receive STEM-related bachelor’s degrees - which includes information technology (IT) and who earn a median annual salary of $84,000 - are Black. IT, finance and marketing are favored
www.thechicagocitizen.com
concentrations in real estate, mortgage and banking. On the other hand, the report says African-Americans are highly represented in majors associated with serving the community, which tend to be lowerearning - “human services and community organization (20%) and social work (19%).” Milan Griffin, Vice President of Marketing and Outreach for HomeFree-USA believes mortgage industry jobs - which are a combination of earning higher salaries while serving the community - will attract Black college graduates, most of whom tend to be socially conscious trend setters among their peers. “People of this generation are much more social advocacy focused,” she says. “The importance of students from HBCUs entering into the mortgage industry is this is an opportunity for them to really fuse and really live through their work the essence of doing well and doing good by helping to impact lives while also doing well for themselves financially.” Milan Griffin added that the Center movement will not only increase the number of African-Americans in the mortgage business, but the young people will likely also see the value in getting prepared earlier and purchasing homes at younger ages. “This program is having them to rethink success: ‘I was told that going to grad school was the only option for me to boost my income. But now I see that instead of amassing a whole other pound of debt; I need to build wealth first and build my assets by managing the debt that I do have and then go into home ownership right after college.’”

Free Legal Advice During Law Week BY LISETTE GUSHINIERE
I
f you have a legal question, get it answered for free during Law Week, a program offered by the Chicago Bar Association (CBA). Founded in 1874, the CBA is one of the oldest and most active metropolitan bar associations in the United States with a voluntary membership of more than 18,000 lawyers and judges from Cook County and the State of Illinois, according to a CBA press release. Law Week gives members of the public an opportunity to have free access to lawyers through the CBA’s Call-A-Lawyer Program. On Saturday, April 28, CBA lawyers will be available to take calls and offer brief legal advice from 9 a.m. to noon at no cost to the public when citizens call (312) 554-2001. During conversations with lawyers, members of the public can briefly explain their situation to an attorney who will then work to suggest self-help strategies or provide advice to help resolve their issues. If callers need further legal services or have questions beyond the scope of the attorney’s practice area, they will be advised to contact the CBA Lawyer Referral Service for a referral to an attorney in the appropriate area of law. “The CBA’s Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) has more than 200 prescreened, qualified
lawyers experienced in almost every area of law that offer their services to the public,” said Sally Daly, director of public affairs for the Chicago Bar Association. Elaborating on how the referral program works, Daly added, when contacting the LRS during normal business hours Monday through Friday, callers can be referred to attorneys practicing in numerous areas of law. Areas of the law include: •D omestic Relations (which involves divorce, custody, support and other family law matters); •P ersonal Injury (which includes auto accidents, slip and falls, products liability, wrongful death, malpractice and other types of injury cases.); •E state Planning (including will and trust drafting, probate and will contest.); •R eal Estate (including buying or selling real estate, foreclosure defense and landlord/tenant issues.) and •E mployment Law (including wrongful termination, harassment and discrimination issues.) Additionally, the CBA offers an after-hours On-Call service which provides access to attorneys in three different areas of law at any time after normal business hours, Daly said. “You can reach a lawyer 24/7 for help with criminal defense, personal injury and family law matters by calling (312) 554-2001,” she
explained. Law Week is being held in conjunction with the American Bar Association’s celebration of National Law Day, typically held on May 1st of each year. National Law Day celebrates the role of law in our society and seeks to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession.

Rare 1846 Men’s Shirt Donated to the Illinois State Museum SPRINGFIELD, IL – The Illinois State Museum is thrilled to
announce the recent donation of a man’s dress shirt dating back to 1846, with a documented history of who made it, who wore it, and the specific day on which it was worn. Springfield native Zimri Enos wore the short on his wedding day on June 10, 1846. The high-collared, ruffled shirt is made of linen, fastens to the throat, and is embroidered with Zimri’s initials. Its triangular-shaped gussets under the sleeves would have allowed him to have a wider range of motion. Ruffled shirts were considered fancy at the time, and were typically worn by urban gentlemen. They even had some political implications. Politicians of the day who wished to paint their rivals as elitist and out-of-touch often accused each other of wearing “ruffled shirts.” Zimri’s mother, Salome Enos, made the shirt. She’s considered one of the “founding mothers” of Springfield because she and her husband were one of the first families to own land in the city. The
shirt was passed down through several generations before being donated to the Illinois State Museum by the O.M. Hatch family, descendants of the Enos family. The shirt came with a handwritten note reading, “Wedding shirt of Father’s made by Grandma Enos.” While a shirt like this would have been common in the 19th century, they’re quite a rare find today. Most of them were cut down for children’s clothing, cut up for bandages, or turned into rags somewhere along the way. The shirt will be on display at the “Illinois Bicentennial and Beyond: The Illinois Legacy Collection” exhibition, which will open on June 30. The Illinois State Museum, located on located 502 S. Spring St. in Springfield, promotes discovery, learning, and an appreciation of Illinois’ natural, cultural, and artistic heritage. The Museum’s extensive collections and research activities provide the foundation for exhibitions and public programs that tell the story of the land, life, people and art of Illinois.
Louis Vuitton Announces Virgil Abloh as New Menswear Designer New York – Virgil Abloh, 37, is
making history as the first black artistic director for Louis Vuitton. This is a huge accomplishment, considering how underrepresented black names are in the luxury European world of fashion. Here’s what we know about the new designer. In 1998, Abloh started DJing for fashion parties and even opening sets for artists like Travis Scott, going by the name, “Flat White.” He graduated from University of Wisconsin with an engineering degree and then studied architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He’s had no formal training in fashion design, however, his fashion interest peeked meeting with Kanye West in 2002, becoming his creative consultant. Then in 2009, Abloh and West interned at Fendi. Michael Burke, CEO of Louis Vuitton, was the CEO of Fendi at the time of Abloh and West’s internship. “I paid them $500 a month,” Burke told the New York Times. “I was really impressed with how they brought a whole new vibe to the studio and were disruptive in the best way. Virgil could create a metaphor and a new vocabulary to describe something as oldschool as Fendi. I have been following his career ever since.” In 2012, Abloh started his first fashion label, Pyrex Vision, a streetwear line with luxurious T-shirts and vintage flannels. This set the precedence for his next line, Off-White, launched in 2013 and has a higher-end twist on streetwear fashion. And good news for the Off-White fans, Abloh will still be designing for Off-White as he takes on his new role with Louis Vuitton. “Virgil is incredibly good at creating

bridges between the classic and the zeitgeist,” praised Burke. The designer is making plans to expand the perception of consumers and rebrand Louis Vuitton to continue bridging the gap between streetwear and high fashion, all while communicating a message. “Product is only one part of the luxury narrative,” Abloh told the New York Times. “I want to use Louis Vuitton’s history with travel to really look at different cultures around the world to help make all our humanity visible. When creativity melds together with global issues, I believe you can bring
the world together. Fashion on this level can really open eyes.” “I feel elated,” said Abloh. “This opportunity to think through what the next chapter of design and luxury will mean at a brand that represents the pinnacle of luxury was always a goal in my wildest dreams. And to show a younger generation that there is no one way anyone in this kind of position has to look is a fantastically modern spirit in which to start.” He will be showing his first collection for Louis Vuitton at Paris Men’s fashion week in June.

Roland Virtual Sonics Announces the Release of the TR-909 Software Rhythm Composer LOS ANGELES – Less than a month after releasing the
landmark TR-808 Software Rhythm Composer, Roland Virtual Sonics recently announced the release of the legendary TR-909 Software Rhythm Composer to the Roland Cloud service. For the first time in history, music creators will have access to the authentic TR-909 as a plugin for popular digital audio workstations via the Roland Cloud service. In 1983, Roland followed the massively influential TR-808 Rhythm Composer with the TR-909 Rhythm Composer. Desiring that their next offering sound more like acoustic drums, Roland took a unique and revolutionary hybrid approach that used analog circuitry for the kick, snare, hi-hat, clap, and toms, and used digital sampling for the cymbals. The result was one of the most beloved and influential musical instruments ever made. Although Roland only produced approximately 10,000 units, the influence of the “909” remains a driving force in music to this day. Using Roland’s next-generation Analog Circuit Behavior modeling technology, Roland has faithfully recreated a software adaptation of the original hardware circuitry that gave the TR-909 its distinctive sound, including its analogdigital hybrid nature. In addition to detailed behavior models of the analog circuits, Roland has integrated the TR-909’s original sample ROM. The new TR-909 even comes modeled with the primitive (by today’s standards) digital technology present in the vintage hardware, capturing the essence of the

909’s cymbals and recreating the sound that made them a perennial favorite of dance music producers the world over. The painstaking attention to detail present in the TR-909 signifies that musicians and producers can finally have the authentic sound and feel of the original 909 in their digital audio workstations. nonprofit dedicated solely to media content about the black experience, convened the first-ever Black Media Story Summit Friday at Google’s New York City offices. The day-long, invitationonly gathering brought more than 100 black creatives and thought leaders together with media technologists, funders, investors and distributors in a series of conversations designed to get strategic black content into the distribution pipeline. Findings from the event, which was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation, Google and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting with additional funding provided by Wyncote Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, will be summarized in a white paper to be released this summer. BPM Executive Director Leslie Fields-Cruz conducted opening remarks followed by a keynote given by Jesse Moore, former White House speechwriter and associate director for public engagement in the Obama administration who served as primary liaison to the entertainment community. His speech focused on how storytelling is the X-factor in the social movement. “It’s more than entertainment — or at least it is for people like us. Because stories touch us in ways we barely detect when we’re being entertained. They build empathy, unpack complexity, and provide perspective that can only take hold because our guard is down. This is the power of stories—and the responsibility of each one of us in this room.” Sessions included “Diversifying Blackness: Getting the Untold Stories Told,” “Paving New Pathways in Emerging Media,” “Forging New Bonds: Amplifying Activism,” “An Intentional Narrative Space,” “Telling Immersive Stories: A Virtual Reality Showcase,” and “Money Matters: Fueling the Content Pipeline.” Attending the inaugural event were thought leaders in mass incarceration, community safety and policing, technology, diversity, environment, LGBTQ rights, immigration, black women’s health, black mental health at such organizations as the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Momsrising.org and Silicon Harlem. These social justice champions were brought together with filmmakers, producers and others who can help move key content to market. Executives attended from American Public Television, the ARRAY Alliance, BBC Worldwide, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Imagination Capital, kweliTV, the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, the Open Society Foundations, PBS, POV Digital, the Producers Guild of America, Samsung, Silicon Harlem, the Southern Documentary Fund, Sundance Institute, Third World Newsreel, TV One, WNET, and more, attended. Among the many notables who attended were Lisa Cortes (Precious and Monster’s Ball), Yance Ford (Strong Island), Thomas Allen Harris (Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People), Shola Lynch (Free Angela & All Political Prisoners), Roland Martin (Nu Vision Media), Richard Parsons (Imagination Capital) and Shukree Hassan Tilghman (This Is Us), among others. “All of the participants of the Summit work at the intersections of the industries that impact or are impacted by the telling of black stories, so it is essential that all of us are actively invested in the development, production and distribution of those stories,” said Fields-Cruz. “I’m challenging us to take ownership of creating that expectation of inclusion by taking the steps needed that can ensure our work gains real traction to make true inclusion a reality.”
