Emergency Departments Not a Major Source of Opioid Prescriptions, New Study Shows

Opioid prescribing has increased 471 percent from 1996 to 2012, according to a new Annals of Emergency Medicine study, “Emergency Department Contribution to the Prescription Opioid Epidemic.” But, emergency departments are not a major source of opioid prescriptions. In fact, their share of opioid prescribing is small and declining.

The share of opioids from doctor’s officebased prescriptions rose from 71 percent to 83 percent during the 17 years analyzed. The share of prescription opioids originating from emergency departments declined from 7 percent to 4 percent in that same timeframe, the study finds. The analysis was based on the nationally representative Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) data, administered to 15,000 patients annually.

IL Department on Aging Announces 2017 Senior Hall of Fame Inductees

The Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) recently announced the 2017 Senior Illinoisans Hall of Fame inductees who are being honored for the meaningful contributions they have made in performance, education and community service. “Our 2017 inductees are dedicated individuals whose contributions reflect the agency’s principles of respecting yesterday, supporting today, and hoping for tomorrow. We thank them for their commitment and generosity,” said Jean Bohnhoff, Director of IDoA. The 2017 Senior Illinois Hall of Fame inductees are: Helen Hawkins, 87, of Granite City, is the 2017 inductee for the Community Service Category, Lou Henson, 85, of Champaign, is the 2017 inductee for the Education Category and Carol Schempp, 73, of Springfield, is the 2017 inductee for the Performance / Graphic Arts Category.

Ford Joins Ex-Offenders to Announce Illinois Voter Registration Drive for ExOffenders

CHICAGO – Illinois State Representative La Shawn K. Ford (D-Chicago) and interested stakeholders held a press conference ‪on January 18, 2018‬, to announce a voter registration drive for ex-offenders and to call on candidates for governor for the state of Illinois to make ex-offenders and their re-entry back into society a major agenda item once they enter office as governor. Compared with many states, Illinois has a more lenient view toward ex-felons being able to get their voting rights back after they have served their prison time. While anyone incarcerated because of a felony cannot vote, voting rights are instantly reinstated upon release from the prison system. In addition, anyone who is on probation or parole is able to vote.

Officials came together and “broke bread” where they recently celebrated the opening of a new 140,000 square foot Whole Foods Midwest Distribution Center which will bring 100 new jobs to the historic Pullman community.

Commenting on the recent development, Alderman Anthony Beale (9th), who was joined by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and others said, “it’s a continuous effort,” adding, “We are now creating more jobs for the community so people won’t have to travel outside of the community to find good-paying jobs.”

Pullman also recently celebrated the grand opening of the new Potbelly Sandwich Shop and the new 10,000 square foot 111th Street Gateway Retail Center.

In addition, other businesses such as Walmart, Planet Fitness, Ross Dress for Less, Method Products, Gotham Greens are located in Pullman.

“These are exciting days for Pullman,” David Doig, President of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives (CNI) said.

“Thanks to great leadership from Mayor Emanuel,

the tireless work on behalf of the community by Alderman Beale and the talent and support of our community partners, the City of Chicago, local businesses and residents, Pullman is the ultimate comeback community.”

Beale said Mayor Emanuel has helped with at least two dozen ground-breaking and ribbon cutting initiatives in the 9th Ward since he’s been mayor of Chicago.

“We have something really special going on in Pullman,” he said. “Over 1,100 people are employed right now in Pullman. So, creating job opportunities and putting people to work will help the overall housing stock where people can buy more community homes and bring more restaurants in the area, which will continue the resurgence of community opportunities.”

Beale continued to say that with the recent retail openings, there is a possibility that a hotel chain may be in Pullman’s future.

“This would have never happened without the manufacturing jobs; the Walmart and the upcoming Community Center,” he said. “The Mayor is ecstatic about the growth and movement that we have created out here.”

Activists Say Communities Must Engage in Social Media to Combat Violence

Zach Fardon, Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law and former U.S. attorney, recently led a panel discussion, entitled “Gun Violence in Chicago: Perspectives from Not-for-Profit Community Leaders,” at Northwestern Law in the Rubloff building, 750 N. Lake Shore Drive.

During the panel discussion, Teny Gross, executive director for the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago, raised the question of why black men are willing to kill other black men and how officers are viewing communities that pay their taxes.

“It’s not enough to say don’t shoot or don’t kill,” Gross said. “[Now,] we have a society where we’re all infected with very violent mindsets. So, what is the language that we need to teach?”

A.J. Watson, national director for Becoming A Man (B.A.M.), which serves 10,000 families and teens, through Chicago school partnerships, said he is a firm believer that if he gave every young man in the city of Chicago a baseball bat instead of a gun, there will still be violence and reasons to lock people up for crimes. But Watson said two things wouldn’t happen: you wouldn’t have an accidental person being a result of someone’s anger and you would have a lot more people alive.

“The most troubling thing about the gun violence is the access to guns and the random nature,” Watson said. “Although, we know violence is happening in concentrated neighborhoods, what troubles me is knowing that some of these young men are walking around as gun-shot victims or survivors.”

Ricardo Estrada, president and chief executive officer (CEO) for Metropolitan Family Services, said there were more than 700 homicides in 2015-2016.

“It would have been much higher if it wasn’t for the great medical capacities developed in the country and city of Chicago,” Estrada said.

Watson said there are a group of people perpetrating serious crimes, but the vast majority of teenagers are just trying to navigate through the complexity of high school.

“The reason why folks are carrying guns is for a sense of security or out of fear,” he said. “Carrying a gun often times doesn’t make you any safer or less likely to be a victim of gun violence. So, we find youth [carrying guns] because they are just trying to safely navigate to school. They say ‘if I’m by myself, then I’m a potential victim or if I’m with a few guys then I’m a target.’”

Watson continued to say that social media has also helped amplify gun violence and has given people a platform to boast about things that are true and plenty of things that aren’t true.

“The big issue that comes with social media is the false security of that you can post something on Facebook or Snapchat and think no one will see it or there won’t be consequences,” Watson said. “If you wouldn’t do or say it directly to someone then what is the thought process that brings you to say I’m going to post a picture of me with a gun, calling out a rival gang or click.”

Gross acknowledged that technology is neutral and everyone is still adjusting to it. But he says in order to combat gun violence, community organizations must get involved, befriend and mentor young people who are in clicks and gangs via Facebook.

“There is a new form of media and we need to adapt to it and be engage,” Gross said. “I think social media can tell us, not law enforcement, where threatening remarks are happening so community organizations can intervene...”

A countywide endorsement for Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios was recently held at Josephine’s Cooking Restaurant, better known as Captain Hard Times, 436 E. 79th St. “Joseph Berrios is no stranger to our communities,” said Alvin Boutte, Jr. a Democratic Party volunteer and fundraiser. “He’s bent over backwards for African American and Latino seniors to get them greater Senior Exemptions and returns,” Boutte stated in a release.

Separate Potential Measles Exposure

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recently reported a second confirmed case of measles. It is important to note that these two individuals did not become infected while at O’Hare airport, but had already contracted measles. There is not a measles outbreak at O’Hare airport.

If infected, individuals could develop symptoms as late as February 1, 2018. Symptoms of measles include rash, high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. If individuals develop symptoms of measles, IDPH recommends they call a health care provider before going to a medical office or emergency department.

Special arrangements can be made for evaluation while also protecting other patients and medical staff from possible infection.

Measles can cause serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain). Measles is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.

“It is important for everyone who can be vaccinated to get vaccinated, if they aren’t already,” said IDPH Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Layden. “Getting vaccinated not only protects you, it protects others around you who are too young to get the vaccine or can’t receive it for medical reasons. Two doses of measles vaccine are about 97 percent effective in preventing measles.”

Duckworth Demands Answers Over DHS Refusal to Release Watchdog Report Investigating Travel Ban Implementation U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) recently demanded answers over the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) refusal to release the results of an investigation by its own independent Inspector General into the Trump Administration’s implementation of its first Muslim ban. Duckworth called on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) to hold an oversight hearing on the implications of DHS’ refusal to release the report – which found the Trump Administration violated multiple court orders – and to examine the chilling effect allowing DHS, or any Federal agency, to effectively redact an entire inspector general report could have on transparency across the Federal Government.

“Allowing this Administration, and any future Administration, to block the release of information contained in an OIG report because it addresses a Federal agency’s deliberations would significantly weaken Congressional oversight, undermine transparency and render the IG Act toothless in regard to examining agency management and policy implementation decisions,” Duckworth wrote to HSGAC Chairman Ron Johnson (RWI) and Ranking Member Claire McCaskill (D-MO). “DHS delaying the public release of the final DHS OIG report examining [the travel ban’s] implementation…harms government transparency. This obstruction also prevents Congress from understanding why DHS OIG concluded CBP violated at least two separate Federal court orders and how the current nominee to be CBP Commissioner, acting CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan, oversaw CBP’s implementation efforts.”

The Creative Chicago Reuse Exchange (CCRx) recently received donations from local businesses and helped hundreds of Chicago teachers who needed school supplies and equipment for their classrooms.

Chicago Businesses Donate Supplies to Teachers, Students

The Creative Chicago Reuse Exchange (CCRx) recently hosted a CCRx’s Swap Circle for Teachers at Victor Hall Chicago, 3636 S. Iron Street, where local businesses donated supplies and equipment to Chicago teachers.

Barbara Koenen, CCRx founder, explained that many teachers in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and others who teach at Chicago colleges don’t receive a budget for school supplies and equipment. As a result, Chicago teachers spend $500,000 yearly building productive classrooms.

“Our goal was to help teachers who have limited budgets, if they have budgets at all...get supplies,” she said. “We wanted to give them the things that other people don’t want to use anymore, but don’t want to throw away either.”

A recent CCRx survey of 500 Chicago teachers showed teachers currently spend between $500 to $1000 out-of-pocket every year for basic office supplies including Xerox paper, pens, pencils, glue and even cleaning and personal hygiene supplies.

Teachers need musical instruments, calculators, sewing machines, fabric, wood-working tools, storage containers and shelving, games and graphic novels.

“The reason why we did this is because CPS doesn’t have the capacity to work on getting small items, only big items,” Koenen said.

Donated items included science equipment from

the University of Chicago, materials from Chicago Architecture Biennial and 300 left-foot only Ugg shoe samples.

“A lot of things that we take for granted, some classrooms don’t have them or students come from homes where there isn’t as much support as we’d like,” Koenen said. “We had textbooks, backpacks and supplies that will [soon] uplift students’ learning experience,” Koenen said.

The Creative Chicago Reuse Exchange is a twoyear old 501c3 nonprofit whose mission is to inspire creativity by connecting Chicago’s teachers and nonprofits with surplus items.

JB Pritzker was recently joined by Congresswoman Cheri Bustos where he opened a new JB for Governor campaign office in Rockford.

This is the eighteenth office officially opened throughout the state as the campaign continues to build a grassroots, statewide movement. While speaking at the opening, Pritzker discussed his priorities for putting Springfield back on the side of working families by investing in education, expanding healthcare, and creating jobs.

Power Profiler on LaToya Cantrell

LaToya Cantrell is the mayor-elect of New Orleans, LA. On September 18, 2017, Cantrell was elected the first female mayor in the city’s 300 year history. Claiming 60 percent of the vote, she is also the first outsider elected to the office since 1961.

Prior to being elected mayor, Cantrell served as president of the Broadmoor Improvement Association, where she led efforts that expedited the neighborhood’s recovery after Hurricane LaToya Cantrell Katrina. The group developed a blueprint for the neighborhood and secured $5 million in pledges from the Clinton Global Initiative.

In addition leading the nonprofit, Cantrell was also elected to the City Council in 2012. Her bestknown accomplishment was an ordinance to end smoking in city bars and casinos.

A native to Los Angeles, Cantrell relocated to New Orleans in 1990 to attend Xavier University, where she earned a sociology degree.

“I’m Going to Disney World!’’ Teens Surprised Live on “Good Morning America’’ with Mentoring Trip to Disney Dreamers Academy Five high school students were surprised live on “Good Morning America’’ recently with the announcement that they were selected to be part of the exclusive Disney Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey and ESSENCE Magazine.

Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney World Resort executive Tracey D. Powell joined the “Good Morning America’’ hosts and the studio audience for the surprise moment. National TV personality Steve Harvey also congratulated the teens on their accomplishment with a video message.

Surprised live on-air were Ayanna Adams from Los Angeles, Christiana Okafor from Houston, Marquis Thomas from Virginia Beach, Va., Ava Marie Easter from Los Angeles and Sean Smithfrom Basking Ridge, N.J. The students, who were handed T-shirts featuring the program’s new logo during the surprise moment, are among 100 extraordinary youths from across the nation announced

by Disney to participate in its immersive, transformational four-day program, March 8-11, at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The program, which is entering its 11th year with a new “Be100’’ campaign, highlights Walt Disney World Resort’s continued commitment to the next generation of teens by inspiring them at a critical time in their development to make a difference in their lives and to relentlessly pursue and realize their dreams.

“Each of these 100 girls and boys has proven themselves to be exceptional as students and as human beings, so it’s an honor to have them join us at Walt Disney World Resort,’’ said Tracey D. Powell, Walt Disney World Resort vice president of commercial management - resorts and Disney Dreamers Academy executive champion. “It is our hope that this potentially life-changing program will help create the next generation of great dreamers and achievers.’’

Participating students, known as “Disney Dreamers,” embark on a journey throughout the Disney theme parks and behind the scenes, turning the vacation destination into a vibrant classroom for students to discover new careers, pursue their dreams and interact with Harvey and other motivational speakers and celebrities. or guardian, to participate in the annual Disney Dreamers Academy. The students are selected from thousands of applicants who answered a series of essay questions about their personal stories and dreams for the future.

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING

You may be in a tight spot right now, however, your breakthrough is closer than you think. We all have those moments when our lives are so filled with confusion that we cannot tell up from down; so beset with pain that we cannot see in from out, and so full of frustration and hopelessness that we cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Then, we remember to stop and pray. As people of faith, we recognize that prayer is essential.

Prayer changes things. It gives us the strength to go forward. Jesus said, “I tell you, whatever you pray for believe that you have received it and it shall be yours.” In prayer, we set the soul like a trap to receive thoughts, guidance, and impulses of God. Prayer helps us adjust and prepare our mind and heart to receive God’s program.

Remember, if the Lord put you there, the Lord can bless you there.

Like Abram, you sometimes have to leave your country and kindred and head to the place that God will show you. Even in the liminal space God has a plan for your life, a plan for your welfare and not for your harm. His plan is to give you a future with hope. As one writer said, “Those who are committed to being the light must be equally committed to the process of burning.” The good news is that God never leaves you alone.

Prayer changes things because prayer changes us. It has been said, “Pray as if everything depended upon God and work as if everything depended upon you.” So, Lift it up and Let it go. Leave it to God.
